Sandwiches are important
12I ranked my top 20 sandwiches based on the criteria of which one I’d most want to eat ten days in a row. If the criteria were for eating a sandwich for just one meal, the richer, heavier sandwiches (i.e. Po’ Boy, Roast Beef, etc) would move up and the “common” sandwiches like PB&J, H&C would slide down the rankings. (hotdogs, burgers and wraps such as burritos were excluded)

Thank you, for my daily reminder of, while not necessarily being prefect, how incredibly good we have it in the modern first world.
@nogoodwithnames Just a silly and interactive exercise my wife and I did to forget for few minutes that the world is really, really fucked up.
Is the order across then down, or down column 1 then down column 2?
Also, banh mi is an interesting #1 choice. I guess I should make it a point to find a good one sometime.
@djslack Two columns. Top left is #1. Bottom right is #20. A good Banh Mi is life-affirming. Sadly, a good Banh Mi is hard to find (Apologies to Flannery O’Connor)
@huja So, is the BLT #2 on your list, or #11?
I would bump the Gyros and Chicken Parm way up, and bump down the Egg Salad and Tuna Salad.
@conandlibrarian That’s fair. I would too if it were just one meal. Chicken parm ten days in a row would be tough on the belly.
No vegan? I like avocado and “veggie stuff” on whole grain something-or-order. Lots of avocado. Thick sliced.
Or similar with lots of olive dressing like a veggie muffuletta.
Also tacos. Taco are sandwiches of great universal harmonious vibrations, to all higher-order and spiritually-ascended beings.
They are also better than burritos.
If veggie sandwiches are unavailable or unappealing, wtf, I just order what my inner teenager would want.
PS
@huja
Can we get this dilemma onto the Security Council agenda for the next meeting? It’s important.
@f00l These were just the top 20 “mainstream” sandwiches my wife and I came up with. We kicked around adding the muffuletta and lobster roll but though those were too hard to fine. We excluded tacos because that’s slippery slope and soon we’d talking stuffed arepas and the various “bings” of China/Taiwain - All of these sandwich/sandwich-like foods being delicious and merit discussion on their own, but just not in our hastily assembled top 20 (plus, hey, we’re not made outta’ note cards!). I’m with you on Avocados. I eat half an avocado every day in some way, shape or form. About the vegan thing, I’m just not qualified to wade into that end of the pool. Eat a lot of vegetarian these days, but dairy is a consistent element of that diet.
We should definitely go to committee and do some impact studies on sandwiches . . . it’s important.
@huja
Now, finally, the truth can at last be told to all.
Tacos are best.
@f00l I spent $6.50 on a single Al Pastor taco at a fancy-pants, sit-down Mexican restaurant on Friday. Good taco, but not $6.50-worth of taco.
@huja
So eat street tacos and truck tacos and TexMex tacos.
Do not buy in to high-end “gourmet” tacos. Geez.
@f00l So get a BLT and put the bacon on the side. And the mayo too I guess.
@sammydog01
Or I could fall from grace and eat the whole BLT.
@huja I’m gonna necropost here to say that I’m disappointed that it took me my whole life to discover arepas. I just ate one from a Four Brothers food truck and I’d definitely call it a sandwich. Excuse me while I sit here with a full belly and a smile on my face sipping the remainder of my Colita.
Glad to see you have the Reuben up where it belongs.
Yum!
Couldn’t agree more with your #1. We have a place around here that makes the best beef Bahn Mi. I could totally eat it 10 days in a row.
And by the way, we’ve tried recreating it at home, and it just isn’t the same.
It could be that whatever the best local awesome sandwich is, that’s the best sandwich.
Right now I happen to be picturing chopped beef BBQ with extra meat and sharp cheese and pickles on rye, with a large beer, and some sharp cheese on saltines for snacking if you stay a while.
Oh and ya gotta open the sandwich and pour lots of Tabasco all over everything.
This is not as purely vegan as the ideal perhaps.
Fuck it. I think I’ll just get one.
From Angelos, motherfuckers.
Can’t find pix of the sandwich, but here’s some of their menu;
Railhead is also worthy
As you can see, I’m really really pure about the vegan thing.
What can ah say. It’s Cowtown.
@f00l My experience: Railhead>Angelos.
@compunaut
Love them both.
Sometimes deciding some absolute #1 is taking things too far.
But Railhead didn’t exist when I was young. And the bears at Angelos used to contain hidden speakers. The mics and switches were behind the bar.
When big-eyed kids would go up to look at the bears, their parents would motion to the barkeeps.
When the kids got up close to the bears, the bears would start to growel or talk back to the kids, or laugh, whatever the barkeeps were in the mood for that day.
A lot of kids would get playful, or get scared and run to their parents.
My older brother and I started swatting at the bears and growling back and making like we had claws.
Btw the best BBQ in Texas is said to be in the Hill Country. Lockhart, Fredericksburg, places like that. I’ve never taken a trip just to explore that. I should.
Re #1 and absolute best and all that:
BBQ places in other states, we wish you well, we think you’re great! Which state is best?
Hey, other states: Should be a tight, hard-fought competition for second place! We’ll be rooting for our favs among you!
@compunaut
Forgot this. I don’t think they still do it - Angelos used to serve 64oz steins.
As in, per person. In enormous frosted cold beer glasses.
One day a few friends were in town. Last Tango in Paris was showing downtown, at one of the theaters on 7th near Throckmorton.
Yeah, ain’t there anymore. No since the '80s?
Anyway my friend had not seen that film, so we went. And they liked-respected it I guess the way you do with those sorts of art films when the film gets to you.
But we needed to be in another place with a different atmosphere.
So we went to Angelos and ordered those 64oz glasses of beer all around (more than once) and nibbled on BBQ all afternoon and evening. We talked about loss and alienation and Paris and art and symbolism and how to drink Tabasco out of the bottle in quantity. (Had to demonstrate for them.)
One of the few times I ever had to call someone to come get us. No way were we driving.
Great day tho.
One of those people (non-political appointment) now has a huge say in significant government economic policy. Haven’t seen him in decades but I guess he doesn’t drink beer like that anymore. I guess I don’t either.
@f00l Do I have to fight that Bear to get a table?
@huja
Not normally. The place is pretty big. And they have more than one bear, and water buffalo, deer, some other animal heads and animals.
The guy who founded it was an avid hunter. These animals are a few of his trophies.
If you do wanna fight a bear, prob best have some BBQ and a few beers first. Stay loose that way.
@f00l I’ve lived here for >20yr, and have yet to have a great meal at Angelos. Pretty OK, but not great. Similar issue with Joe T. Garcia’s. They’re just coasting on their long-ago-established reputations.
Still need to try Heim BBQ (on Magnolia) & Billys Oak Acres (far West on N Las Vegas Trail).
no pastrami?
@katylava Good catch.
@katylava
/giphy gross!
No Corned Beef on Rye? No French Dip? No Tri-Tip sandwich? Neglecting the Meatball Sub? No te gusta el taco o burrito?
@DaveInSoCal Corned Beef on Rye - aka a Reuben, is either #2 or #3 on the list, depending on which way you look at it. That would have been my #1
You ranked a head cheese sandwich at number one and various mayonnaise-based gross salads above hoagies. You’ve lost all credibility. It’s because of people like you that hot sopressata is no longer sold at my supermarket.
Turkey & Swiss, but Ham & Cheese? What kind of cheese on the ham?
@Ignorant dealer’s choice
@Ignorant Swiss, obviously.
@Ignorant I enjoy a nice turkey Ruben from time to time.
No idea what that first one is, but if it has meat, I’ll try it.
I’d drop the PBJ & insert meatball or Italian Sausage sandwich & Cheese. Pulled pork is also way too low.
All sandwiches should have lots of meat &/or cheese, or it ain’t on my list…
I fear you’ve done an inhuman injustice to cheese steak!?
Although not authentic, I’m a big fan of chicken Philly as well. Also love a big, fresh kaiser schmeared with cream cheese, a fat slice of sweet onion and a big hunk of ripe beefsteak tomato, fresh ground black peppa and a dash of salt, indulge. Also works well if you replace the cream cheese with Swiss and add some avocado.
Dang, now I’m hangry!
@ruouttaurmind
The way you talk about sandwiches makes me want one.
@f00l Kinda like the Carl’s Jr. TV commercials featuring a sexy girl eating whatever bizarre burger combo happens to be their latest 5000 calorie creation. Makes me want a hamburger. And I don’t even like hamburgers.
@ruouttaurmind
Yeah those commercial are something else.
If those gorgeous models actually ate more than two bites of those gigantic burgers, the models wouldn’t be quite so camera-ready anymore.
@f00l @ruouttaurmind Kate Upton is a pretty big girl; she could absorb a few extra ounces & nobody would notice. As far as Charlotte McKinney is concerned, she could put on a fat suit with no impact; we/they are all looking at something else
@compunaut Kate… could add 10 pounds and be just about right. Charlotte… way way too thin. Eat a freakin sammich or something Charlotte!
@ruouttaurmind
@compunaut.
Yeah some of those models are really thin. Some are prob made that way. Others starve to do it.
Bit none of them could eat a Carl’s style burger and fries more than once s week (if that often) if they wanna keep their careers.
The prob with a model eating normally if she’s not also a marathoner is that it’s really hard to eat like a normal person just one day or two days a week. If you do that you start to crave. Eat that way any more often and your price and demand just dropped.
Some of those burgers look to be 1k calories per bite.
The ads are a scream tho.
@f00l CARLS JR 1/2LB. GUACAMOLE BACON THICKBURGER
1/2lb. Charbroiled Black Angus Beef Patty, Guacamole, Two Strips of Bacon, Two Slices of Melted Pepperjack Cheese, Lettuce, Two Slices of Tomato, Red Onions, and Santa Fe Sauce, now served on a Fresh Baked Bun.
Per nutrition calculator: 1230 cal. Total (not per bite)
@compunaut, @f00l, Fat Burger does a “Triple with cheese and bacon”. I ordered one on a dare a few weeks ago. I was expecting three 1/4 pound patties, couple slices of cheese, maybe a strip of bacon sliced in half and stacked on top.
What I got was three 1/2 pound patties, each patty had 2 strips of bacon and two slices of cheese. By the time they got done adding lettuce, onions, tomato and pickles the thing was an intimidating 5 and a half inches tall and weighed a hefty couple pounds (2lb 3oz according to my kitchen scale). I don’t really care for burgers much, so I only had a bit of it and gave the rest to my roommate. It was ok, not fantastic. I suppose for $12 it was priced fairly?
Never had a Bahn Mi. I feel uncultured.
Of the sandwiches you list, the Reuben is my fav.
Great Subs come in second place.
Also really like excellent Muffulettas.
@compunaut
Couple of things to try:
The monster grilled cheese at Cage Brazil. The Cafe Brazil in FW doesn’t have the same vibe at the one on Central Expressway in Dallas tho.
Best subs I ever had around here:
Dinos Subs.
2221 S Collins St, Arlington, TX 76010
This on on Collins, East side of street, just south of Pioneer Parkway
The sandwiches are amazing and you can customize them all you want and they will put lots of freshly sliced avocado on your sandwich.
Where have you seen this Gorgonzola Food Truck around? Is it in one of the parks?
@f00l Bahn Mi sandwiches are amazing. Look up your nearest Korean place.
@jbartus better idea is a Vietnamese place, since that’s where they are from . . .
@ratman
@jbartus
We have some Korean places, but we also have several neighborhoods where all the groceries seem to be Vietnamese. I’ll have to go cruising for this legendary sandwich.
@f00l Don’t usually get to that part of Arlington. South Cooper, maybe.
Gorgonzilla: Not sure if was at one of the FtW food parks, or maybe at last year’s southside street fair? Yelp shows them in the heart of TCU, on Berry just W of Greene?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@ratman you’re right… I could have sworn Korean… either way they’re fucking amazing!
@compunaut
Ok I know that neighborhood (Berry) cold. I’ll find them.
Re Dino’s subs.
Take the time for a special trip. These subs aren’t that good - they’re better.
Not to hard to get to from 20 or 30.
Just thinking about them makes me a little insane. And before I got back to this thread I felt full.
I could eat a johnnies beef and sausage combo every day for 10000000 days and want another one as soon as I finished it. Also, brisket > pulled pork.
http://johnniebeefs.com/
@pfarro1 Sounds like a great Chicago joint - in UT!
Very rare roast beef with black edges, Muenster cheese, beefsteak tomato and horseradish sauce on pumpernickel or rye bread. Sharp cheddar cheese and sliced apples grilled on 7 grain or oat bread with apple butter. BLT on wheat. Smoked turkey, jack cheese, tomato, Famous Daves pickles (spicy bread and butter pickles), and Miracle Whip on potato bread. And an old family favorite, sliced banana on white or wheat bread with Miracle Whip. A cheap kid pleaser my grandmother invented that pleases me to this day.
@huja I notice that you ranked Roast Beef #8 which saddened me, but I have an important question for you.
Sauce or Mayonnaise?
Also
What kind of roll?
@jbartus I like rare roast beef on rye or sourdough with creamy horseradish (has to be spicy enough to make your eyes water). Soft baguette (aka French roll) for French dip-style.
@huja I am disappointed! I’m not a fan of the horseradish sauce but can respect it, but a roast beef sandwich should be warm and served in an onion roll! A French dip is not a roast beef!
Claim Jumper used to serve this incredible pot roast sammich. Ciabatta roll dipped in as jus, a bunch of carmelized onions, slice of Swiss, slab of pot roast, buncha tomatoes, and a few more onions. Ohhhhh so tasty!
@ruouttaurmind You know what I learned recently? the Ciabatta is a modern bread, only invented in 1982. Slipper Bread’s History
@huja http://www.eater.com/2017/2/17/14625136/artisan-bread-history?utm_campaign=eater.social&utm_medium=social&utm_content=eater&utm_source=facebook
I’d like to interrupt this thread to salute Meh’s enthusiastic (and decidedly non-meh) feelings about sandwiches.
@huja Because Sandwiches are important.
I finally surrendered to this thread. Smoked turkey, pepperjack, beefsteak tomato, and avocado on wheat for lunch plus dinner (I missed lunch).
@moondrake
Come cook for me.
@f00l Love to. I made a simple one pan chicken dish on Wednesday that came out fantastic, but too much. I had to call a friend to come help me eat some last night, and I’ll have the last of it tonight. It’s hard to cook less than 4 servings.
@moondrake Can’t you freeze some? I don’t like to the same thing 2 (or more) days in a row
