When colorblind people put on those glasses that let them see full-spectrum color for the first time in their lives, isn’t it the first seeing of purple in particular that always makes them cry for the sheer beauty of the color?
@f00l Not sure if a good monitor would make much difference. I’m using an old laptop with a crappy monitor. And looking at @TickledLizard’s spoiler, I see the whole image as black (and just a little white on top), not just an outline of the object.
I’m mainly a purrveyor of just catshirts, though. And even then, it’s not infinite. Even between shirt.woot, TeeTurtle, Threadless, GoodJoe, and others, I’m under 100 different catshirt designs.
depends on your monitor more than your vision, most likely. If you’ve got a crappy TN monitor like the one I’m looking at right now, try tilting it up and down.
@InnocuousFarmer Both the resolution and the settings. How many people adjust the settings on their monitor when they set it up? I do, but I think I’m one of the minority.
But if you have ever taken one of those color vision tests where you try to see the number in the dots, then you know that color vision can vary a lot. I’m one of those odd people with near-perfect color vision - which I’ve never found any great use for in real life. (And yeah - horse, mane, saddle, missing hooves …)
@rockblossom The color vision test only tells me that I can see colors.
I did say “most likely”.
… pretty sure it’s got a fish tail. call it a uh, merhorse. horsemaid.
To me, looks like a horse with a saddle; tho lower legs/hooves fade out into nothing. The contrast is poor but the details are there.
Am I imagining all that?
/giphy just my imagination
Since it’s very low-contrast, what you see will depend on your monitor and settings, the angle you view it, the particulars of your system’s JPEG decoder, and how the image is resampled to whatever size you see it. Calling it an “eye test” is kinda silly.
@awk I think people were more asking if it were some kind of eye test, I don’t see anyone actually calling it that. But eyes vary considerably on how able they are to handle luma and chroma contrast as well… why we have pretty strict contrast requirements in the §508 world (one of the few truly definitive requirements, tbh).
Fascinating. I have a CRT, and a high end flat panel, and the flat panel really depends on the perspective. The CRT sees it as a shaded circle, with the dark image there, if you look for it. I had the advantage of having already seeing it on the flat panel first, and it’s VERY dependent on the perspective, and even the physical location on the screen. It’s an interesting illusion.
It almost makes me want to fire up xv, and I’m not sure where I even have a copy any more…
I waited a minute until I tried. Knowing this community, I was waiting for something to pop out and scare the living shit out of me.
BTW, only a faint image.
Odd. I can see it clearly and quickly on several different url pages where the dot is smaller. See nothing at all here, even when I move the laptop back (but then again I am not wearing my glasses and might need to with this moved back a bit).
So I ran the image through some experiments on Photoshop and suspect that most people seeing or not seeing the image is going to depend on monitor settings and various qualities of the monitor that affect the display of the image. Everything from subtle tint differences to color shifting to brightness can make the image more or less visible. LCDs with a poor viewing angle range are probably easiest to make it out on, though I can’t speak as to how CRTs would do. If you’re having trouble seeing it try dialing back your brightness and see what happens.
Faint image. Are we color-impaired? If so, I am po’ed.
@f00l - If so, I’m with you. Maybe with more responses we can see if we’re in the minority?
@f00l I only see it faintly
It’s loud and clear to me.
@Barney
What color?
@f00l The circle is red. The image is black but I am seeing it though a red lens. It’s missing a front leg. Maybe.
@Barney
I just see red ground, v slightly faintly darker red image that I really have to look at to discern.
If I have gone thru so many years as color-vision-impaired without even knowing it, I want a fix, and then a guaranteed do-over on a buncha decades.
@Barney - Really? Then what color was the dress?
@KDemo Purple?
@Barney
Regarding purple:
When colorblind people put on those glasses that let them see full-spectrum color for the first time in their lives, isn’t it the first seeing of purple in particular that always makes them cry for the sheer beauty of the color?
@f00l I should hope so.
@f00l Hmm, I guess the answer is already in this thread.
@Barney
Wondering why you see the black and I don’t. Am using an I-thang-device, which has an impact glass screen.
Perhaps I should just use a computer w a decent monitor. But that would involve effort.
@Barney
The rules of the internet demand that if there’s a forum thread with a puzzle, then someone has to ruin it shortly after it’s posted.
(I compromised.)

@TickledLizard - Exactly. And the meh forum is (or was) better than the rest of the internet.
@KDemo
We still are better than the rest of the internet.
(For the most part, for instance, we have less cat memes than any other online community.)
@TickledLizard @narfcake can change that if desired…
@TickledLizard @compunaut Hahaha!

@compunaut
I have a positive view of @narfcake. HOWEVER that could be killed easily if he starts posting cat memes.
@TickledLizard
Anyone offered odds?
Betting on memes myself. @narfcake has No Fear. .
I see it, but I wouldn’t say in bold detail.
Spoiler
@TickledLizard
( ͡° ʖ̯ ͡°)
@KDemo
@TickledLizard
Si.
@TickledLizard Was really hoping it was the three-legged goat I was seeing. Meh.
@brhfl me too!

I see a faint horse with its legs chopped off.
@RiotDemon Having my legs chopped off would make me faint, too.
I also see a low-contrast truncated equine.

Faint image on both my laptop and phone.
That dress is definitely white and gold.
@thismyusername I saw both white/gold and blue/black - at different times. It was weird.
@thismyusername Blue/black all the way.
On my laptop, it totally depends on the angle of the screen. The further back I tilt it, the clearer the image is. Weird?
Odd. I can see it clearly and quickly on several different url pages where the dot is smaller. See nothing at all here, even when I move the laptop back (but then again I am not wearing my glasses and might need to with this moved back a bit).

Now that I’m on my laptop… it’s clear as hell if I tilt my monitor back just slightly. Well, as clear as that crappy drawing can be.

Interesting, my $200 ASOC monitor showed more than my 5000000000000 BlunderDolt monitor.
@cranky1950 Shucks on my 100 chromebook I see that the horse is a paint. I think the cheaper the tech the better it looks.
You’re all wrong…
Ok my eyesight just improved.
Now, I see the entire universe.
Like this:
@f00l I want to visit your optometrist. You appear to have gotten quite a big bang for your buck.
The farther I move away from the screen the more clearly the picture becomes.
It’s a Japanese flag with a horse on it.
Behold!
