I was wearing a pair of eyeglasses not too dissimilar from these when I spied that military man giving his all to my wife–on that dreadful, dark, dreary day–not long ago.
@melonscoop yes, exactly. When you buy glasses you buy frames and lenses and then they cut/grind the lenses to fit in the frames. So you’re just buying the frames one place and bringing them to get lenses. It shouldn’t be a big deal, although I’ve never done it like that.
@melonscoop Wasn’t there a pretty good list of options the last time this happened? The lens-only places were still lots more expensive than buying a frame and lenses at Zenni Optical, but some folks thought it was a good deal.
@djslack@Kidsandliz@melonscoop, Yes, the procedure is similar to replacing one len’s due to an accident like letting a damn squirrel, or Irk run around until a lens falls off & breaks¡
Besides being for people who want to get prescription lenses or sunglass lenses in them, they could be great for Halloween costumes or just to appear smarter as well.
Maybe too masculine to be a good pair of bukkake, erm, safety goggles. If you’re in that industry, though, you probably already have a line on glasses. I bet you are either really good at cleaning glasses or you go through quite a few pairs.
@Aschdrw when I worked at a pizza place several years ago one of the women had a pair of glasses and there was some little red logo or something in the corner of one of the lenses. Couldn’t figure out what it was, until one day she set them down on the counter for a bit and I was able to get a good look.
They said “display only”
So yeah, some people will steal the display pair from a store just to wear glasses.

@decoratedwarvet@tsveggie not necessarily. If you take them to a Luxottica chain they can for them with prescription Ray-Ban lenses which are quite nice. LensCrafters for example.
@eirens, In the real world you can purchase a pair of dang reading glasses @ Wlmrt, or Walgreens, etc for under $5, take the lenses out & put prescripts in their place, so…
Would these fit my big ass head? Not a hat guy but when I raced I needed a real brain bucket for a helmet ( 7 7/8). Any specs (ha-ha) on frame size or are different sizes available?
I use a site called usemyframe.com.
I love it, and can’t recommend it enough! I’m an eBay seller, and come across a lot of cool frames that I send in to get my prescription put in.
There’s a lot of sites like these, so I’m pretty sure that’s what most people are using these for.
The link they have is incorrect as well I believe - RX7021 is different than RB7021 - and the amazon listing is $70. Found on eBay (albeit smaller) for $33 from big seller. Not rly a deal here …
FWIW, 55 is pretty standard and actually looks a bit big on my face, so rly not that tiny for most
This is RayBan close out from last year. You can take these to a national retail eye glass place and pay 29 bucks for cr39 plastics uncoated lens. Be careful, they might try to charge you a pattern fee.
After waiting all day, I decided to take a chance on the $20 to see how this goes. I’m going to try to get one of the lens places to do the magic on them and see how it goes. (so far that online eBay guy, and Costco, seem like the best chances for me, but I’ve never done the “please put lenses in my frame” thing.) I’m not sure; I’m afraid either it won’t work or they’ll charge me way too much, make me feel like a turkey… My order number:
@pmarin Good luck! Please report back, I decided these lenses are a little too short for my progressive prescription. Currently I have pretty big lenses (about 50mm tall) but I like having the real estate to handle far, mid, and close-up focusing. I am interested though because I might want to switch things up.
I know nothing about the company, other than the fact that progressive lenses on my test case priced out at under $200, which is a decent price. Regular basic prescription lenses are under $80.

You’re right, I don’t see the point of these.
@fuzzmanmatt You probably don’t work in a Luxottica-owned glasses store and don’t need demos for customers to try on.
That’s the only reason I can think of for these to exist.
An inspirational model number…
Model: R4Y-0F-516HT
@shahnm, I think I saw in the description, Model: RX7021
These look interesting, but where the flip does one get substitute lenses? Take the glasses to an optometrist and have them make something?

@djslack @melonscoop I have done it like that. No problem.
@melonscoop Costco Optical will do it for an extra fee. Most non-discount optical places will do it.
@melonscoop I do that with my favorite frames often.
@djslack @Kidsandliz @melonscoop, Yes, the procedure is similar to replacing one len’s due to an accident like letting a damn squirrel, or Irk run around until a lens falls off & breaks¡
@colbysolomon @stinks thanks for the helpful info! Even with buying $40 replacement lenses that’s a good deal for a pair of prescription Ray Bans.
nose/mustache not included
@alacrity Mandatory posting of my poor choice in Halloween costume a few years ago…
@alacrity @tohar1 but it appears you were in a bar, so you get a ton of leeway.
@alacrity @ybmuG In a bar…And I might have had a cocktail or two by the time this picture was taken (given the look in my eyes)…

Those puns are out of sight

Who wears fake glasses? They are a medical device. You don’t see people in wheel chairs for fun or fashion.
@Aschdrw Glasses are very much a “fashion item” Have you ever heard of a guy named Elton John?
In the year 2525, everybody will have fashion wheelchairs.
@therealjrn
Not a moment to soon and not a minute to spare you’re sweet love saved me not a moment to soon.
@Aschdrw when I worked at a pizza place several years ago one of the women had a pair of glasses and there was some little red logo or something in the corner of one of the lenses. @Aschdrw @therealjrn, I have 2 wheelchairs, so I’m all set for 2525!!
@Aschdrw most people buy new lenses. That’s still cheaper than most Ray bans with prescription lenses.
Heh heh heh… The list of features is titled: “Specs”…
@shahnm, Yeah, when I mentioned the prdct specs, Model:RX7021, I said prdct description instead. My Bad!!
Is this a leftover lot from an annuity seminar? Not too fashion forward imho.

@akumax This guy would look good in some Ray-Bans.
@therealjrn
Is this a comment based on teen movie makeovers?
@sippinndippin mmmm…teen movies.
Are the hinges flexible?
Otherwise they’re only worth $20
@tsveggie Good thing they’re $19 then huh.
@tsveggie, Plus, when one replaces the lenses, they lose the Ray-Ban logo!¡!
@decoratedwarvet @tsveggie not necessarily. If you take them to a Luxottica chain they can for them with prescription Ray-Ban lenses which are quite nice. LensCrafters for example.
Very narrow at 55mm
@audiocontr I was wondering about that. I need to measure my glasses to figure out what size they are.
@audiocontr normal range seems to be ~40mm-62mm. One site says “Wider faces should look for frame widths 52mm and higher.“
if the dwarves were wearing these Cinderella would still be a virgin.
What do they cost if I buy them in the real world? That’s pretty much my entire purchase calculus.
@eirens, In the real world you can purchase a pair of dang reading glasses @ Wlmrt, or Walgreens, etc for under $5, take the lenses out & put prescripts in their place, so…
@eirens $40 or so on eBay
@eirens @punkynpye $99 @ walmart
Sell me a pair of real Ray-Ban sunglasses {any style} for $19 & you’ve got a deal!!
Would these fit my big ass head? Not a hat guy but when I raced I needed a real brain bucket for a helmet ( 7 7/8). Any specs (ha-ha) on frame size or are different sizes available?
@Dog19026 I have a similarly sized orb on my shoulders. My current Ray-Ban frames are the same size as these.
@GTTraveller Wow thanks for the reply. I really didn’t know. You have me thinking. Now do I want the Wall St nerd look? Do chicks think that’s hot?
I use a site called usemyframe.com.

@punkynpye cool, thanks. Just bookmarked them. Way cheaper than the inevitable new frames racket at the eye doctor’s

I have strong feelings about Luxottica so I’ll pass. Big Maui Jim fan. Find some dead stock B&L Wayfarers? Let me know!
Buy some bifocal lenses and attach
Last time this was posted the glasses came in bent.

Some nice round ones would have got me to buy these, maybe next time around…
Because I was shopping for glasses last week (I went with Warby Parker) I just got a Facebook ad for this place that will make lenses for any frames.
