Puppies puppies puppies
10I no longer remember who posted the explore.org Service Dog Project webcam here (may they be blessed forever), but I still peek in occasionally. A heavily pregnant Great Dane named May will be whelping sometime this weekend, possibly today. Right now she’s pretty much just lying around, but I don’t blame her because she’s full of puppies and maybe they’re moving?

@OnionSoup drew on you with sunscreen while you were asleep.
@mediocrebot WTF??
@mediocrebot @PhysAssist lol the bot has some weird triggers these days.
Maybe lying around. Which would be when you would get drawn on with sunscreen. In the summer
@mediocrebot @PhysAssist @unksol I assume it was my expression of sympathy for the puppy-laden dog and her current propensity to lie down.
@mediocrebot @PhysAssist @unksol I assume it was my expression of sympathy for the puppy-laden dog and her current propensity to lie down.
@mediocrebot @mossygreen @PhysAssist anyway if you jump back something like 1/6th of the way the I assume nice lady taking care of her shows up lying down with her. And someone is still there you could see theirs feet. This feels a little weird/stalkerish lol. But reminds me of a doberman giving birth at the shelter
@mossygreen the bot piped up because you don’t b l a m e her.
@djslack @mossygreen interesting. I guess they tied a random list of responses to blame our poor goat.
@OnionSoup totally did it.
@djslack @mossygreen yup that checks out lol
@djslack @mossygreen @unksol blame
@OnionSoup is definitely to blame.
@mediocrebot @unksol heheheheheh
@mediocrebot @PhysAssist @unksol Whew, I was thinking “OMG! They’ve hooked mediocrebot up to Watson!”
Still no visible puppies, alas.
/giphy visible puppies

@UncleVinny And this morning no puppies yet either.
@Kidsandliz @UncleVinny Ah, but when they come, there will be so many puppies! There’s another pregnant dog a week or two behind this one. We’ll have so many puppies to watch trying to stand on top of each other before they even learn how to stand!
@Kidsandliz @UncleVinny but their is a new person/new shoes
@mossygreen @UncleVinny At the shelter where I do laundry as a volunteer we have 17 or 18 puppies there. 11 (only 9 lived) were born there and there is a pregnant momma there. I tossed them some clean toys today and they were so funny to watch while I was folding crap.
@Kidsandliz @mossygreen @UncleVinny OMG she is GONE
@Kidsandliz @mossygreen @UncleVinny never mind they moved her, whew
@tinamarie1974 lol I’m guessing you found the spot where she just straight up walked off camera. She came back pretty quick.
Here’s a different one with puppies already born:
https://explore.org/livecams/currently-live/puppy-whelping-room
@RiotDemon I’ll have to check that out when I get home!
Is it happening?? Panting and spending a lot of time looking at her nether regions.
Sounds like somebody is at the titty bar.
@therealjrn
/giphy boooo

She looks super uncomfortable. I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens within 24 hours.
Otherwise, I feel bad for her.
@RiotDemon I know. I feel the need to keep checking on the poor thing.
@RiotDemon @tinamarie1974 Every time she gets up and there’s that little moment of strength-gathering before she moves I’m just like oh, poor baby.
@RiotDemon @tinamarie1974 new person laying down with her for the night. She’s gone full barefoot/sandals are on the floor lol.
okay don’t see no babies…
63 days most the time… is it day 63 yet?
when i just checked…
lady on the bed with her…
she gets off the bed… on the floor …
looks at the bed…
like bitch get off my bed and give me some room!
just looked again…
she jump on the bed and the lady is pettin her…
and she looks like lady please! please! just get off the damn bed…
@mick now the lady’s in the bed, dog’s on the floor beside the bed
@djslack @mick lol I feel a little weird about this cause I’m semi stalking three women so far. When I just mean to be checking on a dog
@unksol well don’t look now, or you’ll feel extra creepy just watching a lady sleep in a dog bed with the lights off and no dog to be seen.
@djslack @unksol just looked the dog is back… just begging that lady to get out of the bed…
cause she thinks the lady is obtuse.
is this the dogs bed or what?
@djslack @mick @unksol every time I looked in the dog wouldn’t stay laying down and wanted to follow the people…
What’s with the rope hanging from the ceiling?
@djslack @mick @RiotDemon @unksol They’ve started coming! There’s a little one with a white streak on its head …
@djslack @Kyeh @mick @RiotDemon @unksol I should have reloaded the page! There was a sign up earlier which gave the birth time (I think it was 9:46 eastern).
@djslack @mick @RiotDemon @unksol I think it’s a dog toy? I’ve only ever seen puppies attacking it.
THERE IS PUPPY. It’s tiny and you can’t see anything right now, but it’s there and a male, about 3 hours old. Doesn’t know anything about anything.
This is going to take all day!
Baby’s trying to nurse but mama’s panting so hard it keeps getting bounced around…
Is there still only one puppy after all this time?
@RiotDemon Yes.

@Kyeh ssoooooo cute
@tinamarie1974 I know, I love the little blaze on his head! 🥰
@Kyeh OMG I have been dog-less for JUST over a year and that sweet baby just makes me want to run out and get one!
@tinamarie1974 Oh, maybe it’s time!
I lost my 17-year-old kitty 2 weeks ago and I was really devastated. I thought I wasn’t going to get another for a while, but just today someone posted on Nextdoor about a pair of Savannah cats for FREE - the owner is a former grad student who has to leave the country Friday. They sound super sweet and they’re gorgeous and I’m going to go meet them in an hour. Sooo - I might be getting new kitties!!!
@Kyeh Well? I would love to meet them! I would probably make an exception to my “no more pets” rule if they were near me.
@Kyeh aawww well I am so sorry. Loosing a fur baby is always difficult.
That said, did you get the kittys?!?!?!??!?! And if yes, pictures please
@Kyeh I’m sorry. I got excited and forgot my manners. Condolences on your loss. Fur babies of all ages sneak right into our hearts and it hurts when we lose them.
@tinamarie1974 @speediedelivery Well, ulp, I guess I AM going to have new kitties… I met them and they accepted me. I even got head-butts from the shy one, so their dad, who is very sad to give them up, is relieved. Poor man - he’s been kicked out of his program and has his visa taken away; it all sounds pretty shady and rotten but I have heard of this happening to foreign grad students before. So he’s really desperate to get his precious cats re-homed. Two of them are going to someone else. The plan is for me to take them Thursday; he leaves Friday, and I need time to try to get things ready, like shampoo the carpets so they don’t smell too much like the previous cats.
I guess maybe this was meant to be! Pics to follow. Actually, maybe I’ll start a new thread for that!
@Kyeh @speediedelivery yup I had a grad student who graduated and was initially working for me on his student visa. He did not get pulled in the lottery and had to leave the US by a certain date. Really rough.
And YEA!! I am so excited for you!!! Can’t wait to see the kitten pics
@speediedelivery @tinamarie1974 Thanks for the condolences - it was the toughest cat loss I’ve had in 40 years of cat owning, probably because every other time I still had a cat when one of them died. And then for 2 years it was just him and me, and he was sooooo sweet. I just hope these new little ones live as long as he did, or longer. They’re currently 4 and 3 years old, and very healthy, their dad said.
@speediedelivery @tinamarie1974 Thanks, tinamarie - and what about you, are you going to find a puppy?
@Kyeh @speediedelivery at some point. I do look every day but just haven’t seen “the one” yet. My heart isn’t quite in it, I think I need more time.
@speediedelivery @tinamarie1974 I can understand that.
@Kyeh Please do post photos of your new kitties. Sounds like the stars aligned (well except for that poor family needing to leave). Were all 4 Savannahs?
I just read about this breed. Free is a big deal! Sounds like they will keep you busy with as active and playful as they are supposed to be.
Please do post photos!!!
@Kyeh @speediedelivery @tinamarie1974
I am so sorry you lost a pet you had for so long
I once lost one I had for nearly two decades, just so devastating for me and my family
I also really hate what happened to that grad student that totally sucks for that student. I hope that person is able to find a good way forward
But at least you will have these two new ones to fill your life with entertainment and love
really happy about that please let us know how it goes please put post pictures
@Kidsandliz I’m still kind of in shock about it, really. One reason I responded so fast was that it worried me that they were being given for free; but I guess he did that because he’s desperate to make sure they get a good home. And I do intend for them to have one, poor things - it will be a shock to them. He said they’ve all been very attached to him. They once stayed on the bed with him for 3 days when he was too sick to even get up and feed them! And thanks to the quarantine I’ll be able to stay home and bond with them.
Yes, all 4 Savannahs, and the two going elsewhere are what he called F1, so closer to wild. The two I’m getting are F2, and evidently not all that hyper, but he said the boy does get “the zoomies” about once a month. I’m going to have to do some serious rearranging of stuff in my house!
@f00l @speediedelivery @tinamarie1974 Thanks; and yeah, it sounds horrible what they did to the poor guy - just took away his project, denied his visa, and he won’t have anything to show for all that work - !!! I wouldn’t blame him if he ends up taking his knowledge to another rival country or something. Of course, I’ve only heard his side of things, but I’ve heard stories like that before. Sucks.
For me, I’m a bit surprised at how exciting it feels; I realize now I was pretty down in the dumps because suddenly I’ve got a lot more energy anticipating this!
@OnionSoup totally did it.
@Kyeh You might want to look into whether or not those cat hamster wheels would be helpful. I gather those cats can be pretty active. Of course if you got one it might only be used as a bed LOL.
Since they undid Trump’s no foreign student visas recently they didn’t undo taking away his? He might want to ask about that ASAP and have the school apply for another one for him (might not prevent him from having to go home and then come back though - what country is he from?).
@Kidsandliz He says these particular cats are pretty mellow.
Evidently he’s pursued every avenue for the past six months or so.
@Kyeh I hope the F1’s are in a family who really understands what they are getting into with cats with one wild genotype parent. You might want to suggest that he give your contact info to that family in case they decide an F1 is too much work and not the “regular” cat if that is what they expected. Then you could either have 4 cats or help find those a new appropriate home (likely there is a Savannah rescue that would help rehome them). Reading about it it sounds like not until F3 or 4 do they act basically like house cats. You said one of yours is a boy. Is the other? And are they fixed or was he planning to breed them?
@Kidsandliz This guy doesn’t need any advice, he’s extremely knowledgeable about Savannahs; he was educating me about them. Yes, the f1s are going to people who already have one, and yes, all the cats are spayed/neutered. He told me all about the behavior of all 4 of them. The 2 I’m getting are unusually non-wild; the personalities vary.
@Kyeh sounds like you were very lucky both in the personality of them and that the owner clearly loved his cats and would have treated them so well. That he has to give them up is so incredibly sad for him. I’ve watched cats grieve before when fostering them. These guys sound incredibly attached. Of course that means likely they will be strongly attached to you over time which is great! I am so happy for you that you will have what sounds like wonderful cats.
@Kidsandliz He really is very sad about it. I’m going to stay in touch and send him pictures; hah, maybe I can set up Zoom calls for them!
I do hope the kitties don’t have too hard a time adjusting. He’s giving me their huge cat tree, which I need to move a bunch of stuff to make room for, so at least that will be familiar.
@Kyeh Poor guy. It would break my heart to have to do that. Zoom might actually work. Worth at least a try. 3 of my 5 will watch tv or my computer screen on and off. They might respond to his voice and if you could do it on a computer screen rather than a phone his face might be big enough they’d be interested. At least he’d see the kitties even if they act like the computer screen is a brick wall.
See if you can put the big cat tree in front of a window. I only have 2 windows where I live and the 6" tree is in front of one and they fight over the top shelf. There is usually at least one cat there most of the time.
@Kidsandliz Yeah, I’ve been clearing a space in front of a large window by my front door. It’s been tedious because I’ve been piling stuff up there, but it will be good to clear that space, really.
@Kyeh
Hmm… forced reorganizing and decluttering. That part isn’t fun even if it needed to be done.
One thing my cats love is that I put a strong big nail above a door at the edge of the molding and the wall (angling down into the wall no nail in the molding). I tie an elastic to that and a toy at the other end that they can bite enough to hold. Most of my cats pull it backwards stretching the elastic, let go of it, and then play as it bounces back and forth.
Might want to find out if they might make a run to the front door when it opens if you are going to have them hang out there on the cat tree. I trained my cats to run from the front door as I’d kick it as I’d turn the key which startled them. After they had that down I’d still occasionally do that just as a ‘reminder’ that the door opening might be scary. Has worked well for several generations of cats.
I have sort of always wished I had a bengal cat. Mine are all strays so that has never happened. But they seemed like they’d be really cool household members - just like the two you are getting. And you must have a way with them since the shy one head butted you on the first introduction.
@Kidsandliz Whew! I’m tired! I got a space cleared by the front door and sent a photo to their “dad” and asked if he thought it would be safe, and he did. He said they’d love the window and I told him they’d see rabbits and birds out there. He said they’d love that!
) so I can probably hang one from that.
That’s a good reminder though that I need to scare them away from the door when I come home.
I like the hanging toy idea, too. I have a pull-up bar in my kitchen doorway (it was there when we moved in; I can’t do pull-ups myself
I never in a million years expected to have an exotic breed! I’ve always had little mutts, and love them, but this is certainly going to be interesting!
@Kyeh SO WHERE ARE THE PHOTOS??? I am thinking you picked them up yesterday since he left yesterday? Are they grieving or hiding? I feel so bad for him and his cats - but for you what luck! And the cats are lucky too that they landed with you.
@Kidsandliz Sadly, not yet!!! We transferred the enormous cat tree and two other cat structures over here, with great effort, and help from a friend who has an old van. Then we went back for the cats. Their dad put them in their crates, brought them down to my car, put them in (he doesn’t have a car) - and then said “Can I ask you a favor? Can I keep them a little longer?” Because he changed his flight and is here till the end of the month now. He did that initially so he could be around to answer questions and help if there’s any problems. But he just freaked at the last moment. I can’t blame him, poor guy - and it does give me more time to clean and declutter. That was also a concern to him - I admit I have gotten hoarderish in the past several years. But the prospect of the new cats has been great motivation to clean/organize/get rid of things!
So … we agreed to wait till Monday; I hope it works out; I’m not sure what else he would do but for now I’m going to just go on decluttering because I’ve needed to do this for some time.
That’s @OnionSoup’s fault.
@Kyeh That poor man. I have rehomed 4 strays so far. Two of them it just broke my heart and I had only had them one of them about 2 years, the other a bit under that. I have regretted giving up those two ever since. Of the other two - one I missed a fair bit, but not as much as the other two, the forth I wasn’t all that attached to and hadn’t had her all that long. It is SO hard to do what he is doing. Especially with as little warning as he has had and it is involuntary.
My 19 year old (19 in March) whom I bottle fed from 10 days old I think is nearing the end of her days. It’s going to kill me in a different way (as you well know having just been through this) when she dies. I hope she dies at home in her sleep so I don’t have to decide when to put her down. Her behavior has changed in the last 2 weeks or so and she is losing weight again. On the other hand she is still grooming herself and she still gets up in the cat trees. I realize I am lucky she has lived this long. My last two died at 17.5 and 17.75 two years ago Sept and Dec. They were siblings who were also strays. Hopefully I’ll have a break from this as the next oldest is 11.5.
@f00l @speediedelivery @tinamarie1974 @Kidsandliz
Well, he changed his mind; I can’t have the cats after all. I guess it was too good to be true.
I had texted him a photo of the stuff that got taken to the thrift store yesterday, and said I’m making progress with getting the place cleared out. He didn’t answer, which made me uneasy.
Finally around 9:30 he texted me this:
"I have Some bad news.
The breeder decided to take both cats back and rehome them herself.
It’s her right and I cannot say no because it’s a clause in their adoption contract that I signed.
She contacted me today with this news."
I talked to him on the phone and told him that I thought this was really his decision, which he kept denying, but I still think it was.

I told him I don’t want that gigantic cat furniture, then - he tried to convince me to keep it for future cats, but I don’t want it. He said he’d get it picked up next week - I sure hope so, it’s too big and it has a funky smell.
I hope he at least honors that agreement.
I’m not entirely surprised, and maybe it’s better, maybe they would have been too rambunctious in this house full of small and fragile objects - but I think it’s kind of lowdown of him to do it this way without even talking to me about it.
It makes me wonder if his story about why he’s leaving the university and the country is the real story. Maybe he wasn’t that good at his program or maybe he did something wrong, I don’t know.
At least it got me going on cleaning and organizing here, which I’ve been needing to do for such a long time. And then I’ll get a cat, or two cats, but take some time to find the right ones. It’s still sad because they were so sweet and so beautiful, but it was kind of a gamble, really. He could have decided against me right from the start. Oh well.
@Kidsandliz I’m sorry about your 19 year old. Taffy, who died before Django, lived to be 19.
Even when you know they’ve had a long happy life it’s still so hard.
@Kyeh That is awful news. I am sad for you.
He may be lying about the breeder too. He may have decided to charge people as someone after you may have responded and offered to pay. I wonder if he takes the other two back. Or the breeder may have seen the ad and called him. But it was rotten of him not to tell you what was going on.
And I’d agree about the story. Suspicious. And picking it up next week? HUH? When he was leaving the country Friday and then Monday? Maybe he is planning to be an illegal and hiding out and can’t take the cat furniture with him.
Donate the cat furniture to a no kill shelter if he doesn’t come get it. Or ask him to ask the person who has the other two if they want it (although probably he did offer since it sounds like they got those two first).
And I hope you find loving, gentle cats to adopt once you are ready.
@Kyeh I am going to scrape up the money to take her to the vet, even though it stresses her out big time, to see if what is going on is “fixable” (or at least can be made a bit better) and see what the vet thinks is going on. She won’t sleep or hang out in many of her usual spots during the day so I washed all that stuff thinking maybe something happened to make that stuff smell funky (although I don’t think she has much sense of smell anymore. She certainly has limited vision at this point). Who knows. If it weren’t for the fact that she is eating, still comes to be petted by me (she is a sit next to you cat and not a lap cat), is still grooming, still gets into the cat trees, still uses the dirt box I’d be thinking it is time as something just isn’t “right”.
@Kidsandliz No, I do believe the breeder is taking them; I just think it was his idea to do that. He’s leaving the country this Friday. I think he must be from a pretty well-off family so I don’t think money is his motive. I think he truly does love those cats like his children and just got mistrustful - I only wish he’d just gone to her in the first place rather than getting my hopes up. The people who took the other two are out of state. If he does renege on getting the furniture picked up I’ll post a give-away ad on Nextdoor. (He said he’d hire someone to take it away.)
@Kidsandliz I hope it works out that you get more time with her.
@Kyeh I bottle fed this cat (she was about 10 days old) and she was only given a 5/50 chance. She lived in my t-shirt pocket for ages to keep her warm. It will be particularly tough because of that when she dies. At least, unlike you, I won’t be left without any cats.
Yes it would have been a lot easier on you had he not done what he did to you. I wonder if this would have happened if you had been the one to pick up first. Some of the problem may be simply giving away the last of his cats.
@Kidsandliz Well, you certainly gave that little cat a good life.
I think this guy is trying to do what he thinks is best; it was obvious how much he loves the cats. Yes, maybe if I’d gotten them first it would have worked out but who knows.
@f00l @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @speediedelivery sorry to hear that, I know you were excited. I think I would be insisting on pick up immediately
@f00l @Kidsandliz @speediedelivery @tinamarie1974 Well, I wasn’t ready immediately; my old kitty had some bladder control problems before he died and I wanted to shampoo rugs, etc. So I have plenty of time for that now.
@f00l @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @speediedelivery no I mean for him to take back the tree or whatever.
@f00l @Kidsandliz @speediedelivery @tinamarie1974 Oh - Yeah, tomorrow for sure - he doesn’t have a car so has to hire someone. But I’m not sure how I could force him if he fails to do it! I just hope he keeps his word!
Another one’s coming right now!!!
@Kyeh Boy that is a long time between puppy #1 and #2
@Kidsandliz Did you end up watching after that? Once they got going they came pretty fast.

Also - did you see above - I’m getting some new kitties already!!!
@Kyeh I wasn’t home to watch - doing laundry at the no kill shelter in 110 heat index temps with no A/C, just fans (I told the assistant director there that the fans were defective as they weren’t blowing cold air on me or the dogs LOL - cats are in A/C as are sick and elderly dogs) and then grocery shopping for a handful of elderly people who live where I do. I did look briefly after I had posted but didn’t have the phone data or time to watch for very long.
@Kidsandliz Oh, I suppose working at the shelter you probably have the chance to see this happening in person pretty often.
@Kyeh I only volunteer and end up spending my time doing laundry. The pregnant moms and nursing babies are in individual air conditioned rooms so I only see them when I go to the other part of the shelter and look through the window.
#2 IS HERE!!! All black face, white belly.
Woo hoo!!
Some better screen shots in the chat on their site.
Pup #2!
Dang, I can never get the captioning right.
@Kyeh make sure you leave spaces.
#3 has arrived! Now they’re coming along fast - I bet mama May is relieved.
Lots of tiny puppy grunts happening.
And #4 - I actually saw it emerge; seems like it’s happening pretty easily now.
Five puppies!!!
Now there are FOUR people in the room surrounding her. Hope everything is ok
@tinamarie1974 looks like everything is OK and I THINK I see SIX of them. One is black and white
@tinamarie1974 yeah, they had a sign up. 6 babies from 10:45-7:30 or something like that.
8 Total! There’s one with a white square on its back and a black spot inside that square - so cool!
@Kyeh oh my gosh. What a long labor.
@Kyeh What?! I could have watched it! And now NINE?!
@mossygreen Whoa, I didn’t know about the ninth! I did see #2 and #4 being born, but not the others. That woman Megan sure put in a long day!
@Kyeh It just happened like 20 minutes ago. I went to check out the feed after I saw your comment.
@mossygreen I wonder if there’ll be any more?!
@Kyeh We looked up the typical Great Dane litter number earlier out of curiosity, and it seems 8 is the average, but it can be up to 10-12. Somebody had 19 in a single litter, which seems insane.
@mossygreen Yikes! It actually looks like another might be coming right now?
#10! It looks very limp - I hope it’s okay
@Kyeh It’s not looking good. They’re all still working on it, though.
@Kyeh Aw. Guess not.
Aww, I guess #10 was stillborn.
@mossygreen Oh, just saw your comment; yeah, they certainly tried.
@Kyeh @mossygreen At the shelter a mamma (big, sleek body type dog - no idea what kind) had 11 puppies about 7 weeks ago. One died within 24 hours and another died at about 2 weeks old. Sad.
Yesterday they had some cat litter boxes full of drinking water in with the puppies (they were knocking over anything else). One puppy decided to lie in the drinking water, sitting up tall periodically, I presume because that pup had discovered the fan blowing on it while wet would cool it down. Then it would lie back down. Water got filthy though so in between laundry loads I cleaned out the litter box and put clean water back in. Pup climbed right back in. Oh well.
@Kidsandliz @mossygreen Hah! That’s a smart little pup! I’m sorry about the ones who died - I wonder if in such large litters the mother dog’s body just can’t provide enough nourishment internally or something?
@Kyeh @mossygreen Something seemed wrong with the first one from the start and it was the runt by a lot (maybe 1/2 the size as the others). It wouldn’t latch on very well (so was also being bottle fed and died before the foster could come get it). It cried 100% of the time it was awake. I had thought it was one of the kittens making that noise. The other one seemed to be doing fine and it was dead one morning when people arrived at work. Sad.
I got distracted by work. But was interesting to read all you other stalkers updates. And it’s still up and you can rewind about 12 hours and see all the puppies every where. They seem to have calmed down for the night.
@unksol actually they are all over the place to right about now. If you got the right place there is a woman complaining about her easy pass/toll/fine. I’ll pay your fine lady if I knew who you were. Wasn’t her must have been left on a used car
@unksol they are sooooooo cute!!!
I may just be totally inept… But Is there a link to just donate without joining? I can’t seem to find a way to just donate a few bucks. Which just this was easily worth watching.i might have to stalk them more. Or donate to this shelter… I guess I could toss it to mine for an the difference it makes
Nevermind. Found them. And their donate button. I’m a little slow this late I guess.
https://www.servicedogproject.org/
@unksol I had a student with a service dog (the forum bought his dog a graduation gown - remaining money was turned into a gift card - which thrilled him) and my cousin used to train them up until the final technical training. Dogs for this kind of “job” certainly make a difference in people’s lives.
@Kidsandliz yea that came out wrong. I meant this makes me feel like I should get off my ass and go back to the shelter… Do something… Even though ours are just strays. Etc. I know service dogs make a massive difference in quality of life and can be hugely expensive to train to that level. Just was more focused on mama/puppies/basic needs vs the eventual end goal.
And explorer.org seems like they are doing a good thing but the link to the actual place was like 5 boxes down beneath random other vids and maps and ffs weather. I totally missed it. I got frustrated or skimmed by it and had to Google to find them… If they are linking to someone that should be right up there at the top.
I literally can’t even get the video feed and the link in one screen shot if I zoom out. In portrait mode
There is a partners button top right of the vid. That links you to the relevant shelter too. I would never have thought to click on that because partners is plural. Implying a list of places. Not the one I wanted. Eh. Partner would have made more sense.
@unksol I believe a number of service and emotional support animals come from shelters. Of course many animals in shelters don’t have the needed personality, etc. but I know some shelters specialize in identifying potential candidates amongst the animals they rescue.
We don’t have that volume here. The dogs move pretty well although some have been a while. You always get the old or the sick or the difficult ones. That get stuck. I think we had 16 dogs to 100 cats. Pretty sure all the cats took up less space than the dogs. Well we did. I haven’t been in in a few years they were trying to get funding for a major upgrade…
@unksol The basic needs of the animals in the shelters is, of course, the most important need to take care of or the shelter would just become another warehousing abusive situation. The shelter I volunteer at is having huge financial problems right now as donations are way, way down. They are short 3 dog employees right now which is why I am there nearly full time doing laundry as they just don’t have the time to do that nor money to hire more people at the moment. The business pandemic money has run out for them and that is taking its toll.
They have 300+ dogs and around 100 or so cats. And you are right, cats take up so much less space. The bulk of the dogs they have are large dogs (small ones and puppies get adopted pretty quickly) and they eat a lot because they are big. They’ve got one elderly, very large dog staying in the air conditioned office. She is very near the end of her life (has heart failure) and has spent most of her life in the shelter. Sweet dog (and I am not especially a dog fan). That is no kind of life for an animal though spending their entire, or most of, their life in a shelter. We ship animals to New England (that have pretty strict spay and neuter laws so fewer strays, puppies…) but they mostly want the easily adoptable ones too. That means, over time, the shelter here is filling up with more and more of the least adoptable animals. It’s a no win.
While May’s puppies continue to eat, sleep and occasionally wildly wave their tiny pink paws around on the main house cam, Sizzle appears to be getting close to giving birth in the puppy nursery.

@mossygreen Sizzle has had a couple! Go look they are adorable and there is sound.
@tinamarie1974 Ah, the puppy sounds! So cute. Looks like this litter will easier to tell apart than May’s.
Thanks for the heads-up!
OMG, May’s pups are so cute and squirmy, and those tiny little PAWS! 🥰
@Kyeh I watched two of them turn over 180 degrees while trying to nurse until they fell off, waving their paws like it was going to help somehow (one twice). INSANELY cute and squirmy! The nursery cam has sound sometimes, so you can hear the puppy whimpers. Eight so far, so 17 puppies between the two litters.
@mossygreen Wow! I missed seeing Sizzle’s babies start appearing. This is a more varied bunch with the gray one and so many little spotted ones - and I love hearing all the tiny squeaks. They obviously aren’t happy about being in that basket instead of with mom!
@mossygreen It’s hard to stop watching and do anything else!!!
@Kyeh I think it counts as meditation, don’t worry about it.
@mossygreen Oh! That’s a brilliant way to look at it - I think you’re right!
Aww, such a peaceful scene now, everyone snuggled up contentedly.
@Kyeh I just really want to be in the middle of all that puppie-ness
Update: it looks like May’s puppies are just starting to walk/briefly stagger drunkenly around before collapsing. Sizzle’s puppies, only one week old to May’s puppies’ two, are still glorified guinea pigs.
