Punkin Chunkin canceled again for 2015
5Insurance problems again. There are some smaller events still going on (Aurora CO. this weekend apparently)
I blame Jaramelz, though I don't know how even the October Goat can make insurance problems take out an event like this.

Punkin Chunkin was very local to me - Harrington, DE - in the past. It was great fun. Then they moved it to Dover - further away - not so fun. I miss it. It was a great time. I hope it can find a new home.
And while the air cannons were fun to see, I really liked the trebuchet's.
(unfortunately, the owner of the Harrington land was sued because of an ATV accident during the event - so decided he had to protect himself by not allowing his land to be used anymore)
@duodec Since you did not include the @, I will ping her for the blame @jaremelz deserves. Especially in October!
@mfladd ATV accident that paralyzed a guy
@somf69 I was just pointing out the reason the event is no longer held there. A very sad and unfortunate accident for the volunteer. (I was not commenting on liability).
@mfladd Thanks for the missing @ correction.
There's a USA Today (WARNING, obnoxious popups possible) story indicating the suit was settled out of court earlier this year, and I recall a fair amount of coverage before indicating the guy had been hot-dogging around on his souped up ATV and so was himself at fault for the accident, but who knows where the actual truth lies when all you can get is media stories.
@duodec The media can only rely on official reports and on the record statements from others for their own liability. When sources are anonymous there is a great deal of discussion in (good) newsrooms before using them to be sure they're covered in the event of libel suits. The reporting is only as good as the sources they can use.
@mfladd I've gone too, down in Bridgeville. I was looking for some of my videos but I think they're all on my computer at home. The trebuchets are definitely the most entertaining, particularly as it seems they're going to explode with every launch. Familiar with Fat Jimmy?
@cinoclav Ha. You are right. It was Bridgeville. Don't blink you will miss it. I have to travel RT13 all the time for work. I can tell you all the speed traps (beware Greenville). I do not know Fat Jimmy. Are you local then.
@mfladd Havertown, PA So yes, pretty local. Grew up in Concordville. Fat Jimmy is basically the guy at Punkin Chunkin that everyone knows. The friendly drunk.
@duodec @mfladd Sorry about that, I actually needed the pumpkins to brew up a little trouble.
@jaremelz Then how about arranging a goat-flinging contest to replace it? Sort of a real-world version of dwarf tossing...
@duodec Wheeeeee!!
@duodec @jaremelz
@nadroj Not cool, dude.
@jaremelz
@jaremelz wait sry better gif
@nadroj This is not funny.
@mehbee People below would catch the goat on a sheet. The practice was banned in 2002.
@mehbee it's religion.
(Or @mehbee you were referring to Punkin Chunkin being cancelled again for 2015? In that case, I agree this is more tragic than comic.)
They are still using a cannon in Illinois outside of the Quad Cities. Never have heard how fast they travel.
My wife and one of the kids got hit with one 2 years ago, after impacting the ground. Fairly deep bruises. It was tossed way off course. This was at a local festival, not anything National.
@G1 Nothing worse than the bruises, though? All good now?
@G1 another good reason to stay uprange of ANY item that fires/throws a projectile... Hope you are all better now.
@jqubed @chienfou All fine now. They got hit by broken pieces, after ground impact. They were WAY off to the side, well outside of the fenced-off range limits, on the walking path. It was a "misfire". Also, it's not safe to be behind a trebochet or catapult when firing.
