I always used to use cheap earphones, until I finally bought a ~$100 pair of headphones. The difference was phenomenal. Now I have a nice Bose set –the noise cancelling and other features are much better, but the sound quality is marginally better.
@DavidChurchRN@Fuzzalini That’s not completely true. While I tend to agree in regards to their actual stereo equipment, Bose’s noise canceling is difficult to beat. The only real competition is the Sony XM3 which is widely regarded to be hotter and less comfortable to wear for extended periods of time. It’s all about what your needs are. For me, the QC35 is just about perfect. Don’t knock them until you try (and compare) them.
I wish that meh.com would sell really good, HiFi headphones that I could wear while listening to vintage LPs on my tube amp wigthat is affixed with a high end stylus… . That I could not buy.
@pitamuffin@sanspoint Long ago I had a friend who worked at Dolby doing graphic design. At the time there was a company that made an aromatherapy system that had disc-shaped cartridges that went in a slot in a diffuser. The discs looked like little records so my friend took their magazine ad and put the Dolby logo down in the corner and the text “With Doby Nose Reduction”. A lawyer-type saw it posted by his desk and sent the manufacturer a cease-and-desist.
generally don’t wear headphones ever, but when i do they’re the ~old fashioned~ kind because that’s what i have. don’t have an opinion on earbuds as i’ve never worn them. because of my ear piercings they don’t fit so they aren’t an option for me.
Wired buds when laying in bed or needing something relative unobtrusive. My QC35’s when traveling, mowing the lawn, or doing anything else where I want the surrounding noise subdued.
I definitely prefer the full over the ear headphones (which I assume the poll is terming “old-fashioned”)
Earbuds are the absolute worst for me. I have never had a pair that weren’t tremendously painful. I am convinced my ears are atypically shaped and/or sized. Somewhat counter-intuitively, I can tolerate some of in-the-ear style (which many people, even some manufacturers, erroneously call ear buds),
Closed-back over-ear phones at work. I love my Oppo PM-3. Most comfortable headphones I’ve ever had and they sound great to me. It’s a shame they went out of business.
I have a Sennheiser HD-600 open-back at home but I rarely use headphones at home.
Probably the best overview of closed-back over-ear headphones is Marco Arment’s.
They’re great. My audiophile brother couldn’t notice the difference between these bluetooth headphones and his wired Audio-Technica ATH-M50x. I know they’re quite different price ranges, but I thought it was still interesting to compare since one is bluetooth and one is a highly reviewed and time tested wired headset.
Airpods. It probably seems antagonistic considering the nature of the copy, but these are seriously my platonic ideal of headphone. I have zero issues with them falling out, and the mic is unexpectedly fabulous.
The ones I use most are mPulse ones bought off meh.
I use a black pair, but have an unused red pair as backup. -I had to get the backup pair off morningsave.
I’ve been using these AKG Semi-Open Monitor Headphones for the past couple years & really like them. They are not (because of design) really for use outside, but if one is careful, you can sure take 'em for a ride. Sound quality is SUPERB, but a bargain at about $70. I bought mine at Sweetwater.com
Over the ear Planar Magnetic open back headphones. Can’t beat the sound quality, responsiveness and comfort of Planar’s. But they are power hungry! Currently running Hifiman HE400i’s and a Schiit Magni 2 amp. Been running them for acouple of years and couldn’t be happier. With what seems like a permanent sale (rather then price cut) since my purchase it’s a pretty cost efficient way to get into some serious cans.
WHY USE HEADPHONES??? I JUST CRANK UP THE OLD GRAMMOPHONE AND SPIN GRANDPA’S OLD 78’S FOR EVERYBODY TO HEAR!!! IF YOU DON’T LIKE IT, GET OUT OF THE CABIN AND TRY SPENDING A NIGHT IN THE WOODS!!! ALSO YOU CAN BUY A HAND-CRANK RADIO WITH A BUILT-IN SPEAKER AT MY STORE, SO NO FOOLING WITH AIR BUDS OR HEAD FONIES WHILE WAITING FOR ARMAGEDDON TO BEGIN!!! !!!
Good sounding ones. Perhaps not the most creative thought, but they’re headphones. They have one job…

Earphones with an over-the-ear holder. Though the inner-ear Bose are good too, but not wireless.
Wireless over the ear OG style headphones. That’s over the ear, not on the ear. Manufacturers always seem to confuse those terms.
Bose are overhyped trash.
I use Shure 535 IEMs
@DavidChurchRN Yep, they’re the Oreck of sound, all marketing.

i really like my grado headphones. worth the money but not really a portable device.
Wireless buds on the go
Wireless cans on the train (with nose cancelling)
Wired cans with my turntable
@sanspoint I am intrigued by this nose cancelling…

None

Big ol’ open-backed headphones. Comfortable, not sweaty, awesome warm sound – net every song in iTunes an extra star or two. Can wear them for hours.
They need a quiet room though, and are not suitable for physical activities. Nothing is perfect.

LG Tone HBS1100 - I wear them for 8hrs every day.
@zinimusprime That is interesting to me. What do you do that you wear headphones for 8 hours a day?
@JnKL I work as a QE in med devices. I do a lot of reading and reviewing technical documents. It’s a blast.
I use HTC’s powered USB-C buds. Now any other in ears I’ve tried that aren’t true noise cancelling just sound blargh.
Send help.
ATH-M50x over the ears on planes and at sound boards, in-ear buds on a self-contained MP3 player for working out.

@tohar1 AKG is quality headphones. I’ve worn mine almost every day for 5 years and they’re still going strong. (I use the old discontinued K77)
