These would be so much better if they actually opened up more! Makes it very difficult to light a candle.
Also got one in the mystery box. Gave it to a smoker, works well for cancer sticks!
@lilsrm123 They do make these with much more accessible openings. I have one and it easily burns or lights things on fire. Haven’t been tempted to taser myself yet.
@GLaDOS@lilsrm123@RdiPr You are probably correct—I touched the the electrodes and tapped the button (well, cuz I just HAD to), you get a pretty good jolt. Not like a real taser (I’ve got cruel joking friends in PD), but a pretty good tingle.
@Stallion lighters are good for lots of things not related to giving yourself cancer. However this one seems to be only good for that due to shitty design and you wouldn’t think the audience for plasma fire starter would overlap much with cigarette smoker. Probably why they are on meh
Wtf meh? Running out of things to sell? I already have 3 of these and they work fine, for those of you wondering. They’re my staple home lighters for cigarettes. They’re just as ugly as they look. Those metal corners are not pocket friendly. I’m also not lighting my smoke in a toaster oven when I lose my bic, so there is that.
I have one of these with only a single electrode. I have not measured it, but it seems to me that the plasma either runs cool or is considerably less dense than a match or a lighter. It takes a good amount of time to light a birthday candle for example. I wasn’t able to light some lighter fluid soaked wood pellets with it at all. The only thing going for it is that it makes you feel like the world’s most adorably tiny Jedi.
If this was actually wide enough to serve as a general lighter. Instead of just wide enough to squeeze a cigarette in… what intelligent tech person smokes?
Or also worked as a power bank and convenient emergency source of fire.
Last fourth of July I was lighting fireworks and the wind kept blowing them out and I had flashbacks to this deal… anyone tested them for lighting fuses or sparklers? If they do it I’m in…
@bobthenormal They will do that well, but with the lid design on this one you might need a flashlight to get the arc properly positioned. Assuming you are lighting fireworks in the dark.
@cinoclav I got the 4-pack last time. One for me, three as gifts. Seem to work well, but as somebody noted the top needs to open further for better access to the arcing plasma.
As to the reference to using it as a taser… hmmmm, May have to check that out. If you don’t hear from me later, it must wor
@cinoclav@dashcloud True…true…4 is a little excessive. Ideally, (listen here meh) it should be two as in two for tuesday perhaps? You’d want one charged and ready because these don’t give much warning before they completely die. 3 or 4 means I am just THAT much more prepared, I suppose.
They don’t open all the way because they don’t want you to be able to use them as a torture device. It’s nearly impossible to jam these into someone and press the button. I know. I’ve tried.
I bought the 4-pack a while ago when they were on sale. They’re neat and fortunately all 4 of mine worked. Unfortunately the uses cases are limited due to the arc actually needing to touch what you’re trying to light on fire.
I found using some hemp wick alongside this lighter has helped with the situations I’m using it for. I’ll also be the first to admit this is more difficult to do than use a normal lighter, however this one never runs out of fuel! (just charge)
@ryanhallfayce and how many lighters/matches could you buy for the price of 4 of these? I’d never run out or already have a better way to burn things. And matches/lighters are easier to light things with. I want to want these every time but they seem to be useless if you don’t have a cigarette addiction.
I got one of these in the Morningsave mystery box. Like everyone else says, it sucks because the lid is in the way. I use it for incense. Works great for that. Can’t use it for jar candles.
The nice thing about this one versus other ones you can buy is that is has an off switch. It also has a lid switch. If the lid isn’t open all the way, it won’t light. Good if you carry it in your pocket.
It makes a funny noise when lighting. If you blow on the arc, it’s almost impossible to blow it out. It makes even funnier noises in the wind. It entertained me for a minute.
@RiotDemon I also received one of these in the MorningSave mystery box. It’s definitely built solid, and definitely works. I was apprehensive plugging it in the first time, but nothing exploded and I haven’t had to charge it since, despite playing with it a lot and lighting several things on fire to test it out (including some newspaper for the fireplace). The no fuel thing seems pretty great. So far: no complaints. Probably one of the best things from the box, to be honest. That and the fake not-Yeti travel mug.
@OOB@RiotDemon I should have said “fake, Non-Yeti” as it is both fake, and it is non-Yeti. But it wants to be Yeti. That said: I’ve used it to make coffee at home and bring it in to work, because the coffee at work could strip a battery, and it’s survived the commute fairly well so far. Also kept it mostly hot so I can’t be too mad. It’s mostly spill-proof, but if it shakes around, the top will let some drips out. All in all, not bad for a mystery box I guess?
Better than the Bag o Crap I finally got from Woot which I still have in the box because it is truly so crappy I don’t know what to do with it.
@houstonbeerman Probably not. The effective area of heat is so small, you can barely get a stick of incense in there. These things look cool, but they are useless.
Is there any reason why you can’t remove the lid to make it more useful?..you can use the off switch on the bottom when carrying it in your pocket so it doesn’t accidentally light up.
@werekong Since the lid is already so annoying, it would have been nice if they wired the sucker to turn on when the lid is opened and shut off when it’s closed. Personally, I just leave it on all the time, but I do wonder how much longer they’d last if I switched them on and off with every use.
I got the 4 pack when it was on sale and two of them failed after the third of fourth use. I used em for joints, and they failed when the ash got on the tines a bit. Seems like a weird fragility for a lighter.
There is a YouTube video showing how to convert a single arc plasma lighter into a paper cutter. But not just any paper cutter, a paper cutter that cuts with plasma.
The sequel shows how to convert a plasma lighter into an “arc engraver”.
The paper cutter passes the arc through the paper. The arc engraver uses an air compressor to move the arc away from the electrodes. The air compressor was an aquarium air pump.
Neither device is a useful tool, but they are nifty science demos.
On the one hand, it has “plasma” in the description. Definitely a plus. On the other hand, I don’t smoke and I typically make fire using a pair of sticks.
This thing works for about a minute. That is until the plasma-ish part gets clogged with soot and becomes unusable. Then one has to wait until Meh offers up a micro version of a BBQ grill scrubber to remove said
soot.
@hamjudo
Did you use an accelerant or tinder? That’s a nice looking fire, but how dry is that grass surrounding it? You don’t have anything containing your blaze.
/giphy nice fire
@eonfifty The fire pit is dug down about 4 inches and surrounded by a circle of rocks. The grass is wet due to a recent rain.
The thistle stalks were four feet tall and most of them were still standing when we pulled them out of the dirt. They got thoroughly dried out during the winter. The rain didn’t collect on the standing stalks.
It took me a few tries to get the right technique. I crushed a stalk and rolled it between my fingers. This separated the fibers and turned it in to an effective tinder that could reach the plasma.
Only works briefly after a long charging time. After you use it 10 times or less, it needs charging again. Not very reliable when it comes to a lighter. Completely disappointed and would definitely not recommend!!!
Mine seem to work okay. It’s a bit tricky getting anything in the beam to light it, other than pieces of paper or the ends of grass. Or a cigarette, which I don’t use. But for the price, it’s ok.

You keep selling these but not pop sockets
Got one of these in the morningsave mystery box. Gave it away to a friend so I can’t attest to it’s capabilities.
As Seen on TV?
You know it’s gotta be legit.
@Hanky I instinctively look at that brand name as a warning label.
Got one of these in the morningsave mystery box.
Is it true that these things will light your plasma beam?
@shahnm I mean if you’ve got a really good kyber crystal it will power it up. But you really need a better power source before you go into a fight
These would be so much better if they actually opened up more! Makes it very difficult to light a candle.
Also got one in the mystery box. Gave it to a smoker, works well for cancer sticks!
@lilsrm123 this! The way they open makes it impossible to light most things.
@lilsrm123 @RdiPr I have a theory that they designed them that way so you can’t use them as tasers.

Oh! Someone seems not to have any vices!
You know what burns my butt?
Yeah, Meh is selling it tonight.
Got them the last 2 times, gave many for gifts last season. Fun little things. You can just hold the contacts and shock yourself too!
@dasred You don’t burn yourself? Because I really want to try it.
@sammydog01 no burn, your body conducts the electricity so no flames. Now, I only hit it for a second, i’m Sure prolonged hits would burn you.
Why not, might be fun to play with.

@jandrese I didn’t like this design, but the type wirh the electrodes on the very end of a bendable probe work great for gas grills.
Nice lighter. Would be better if it said Woot! on it, since Woot is selling Meh t-shirts: https://amzn.to/2TDssrt
thanks for reminder. now need to buy some ciga cancer sticks

I don’t smoke, but I’m in for two. Why? Because it says plasma and I haven’t wasted money on meh in too long.

I got a bunch of these around Christmas. They are not reliable which is a big deal for a lighter.
