Historically, no-strings IRK sales have taken less than a minute to sell out unless the batch size was huge. For a long time, the batches during 'Thons were selling out in five to seven seconds.
Actually the one at midnight was your best chance to get one-saw it one my phone at 12:01-got out of bed and went to my computer and bought it then at about 12:03 before they paused at having sold 390 or so.
@Felton10@Kidsandliz In days gone bay, there was a substantially larger crowd waiting to pounce on the midnight refresh because one never knew when it would be a batch of IRKs. And the batch would sell out relatively quickly. I’m told that the original paradigm had the real item for the day replace it, but that’s before my time. Now, because the server can’t make the clean swap right at midnight EST, you’ll get the Something Went Terribly Wrong error (or something even less entertaining) for ten to thirty seconds before the new item finally loads, and even a 'Thon doesn’t always lead off with a batch of IRKs, so a lot of the old camped-on-ctrl-F5 regulars have drifted away.
@Felton10@Kyeh@werehatrack In fact I liked the days when 500-1000 were up at once and the irk’s, fuko’s and fuku’s stayed open for several minutes. Plenty of site glitches helped slow it down too to give more people with slower connections a change. It became much harder when the number up dropped below 500…
@Kidsandliz@Kyeh@werehatrack Whether on my phone or computer, I usually have to refresh a couple of times before I get to what is being sold at midnight. Even on the computer with wired internet unless there are 150+ IRKs for sale, they are sold out before my purchase request processes. Was surprised there were only 600 this time as the time before when they had a similar offering (reasonable fixed price IRK), I think there were over 2k of them for sale.
@Kidsandliz@werehatrack These only IRKs for sale seem to occur on Saturday usually and when the are interspursed (sp) during a methrathon they usually have one between 12 and 1 and then not another till the next morning.
@Felton10@Kyeh@werehatrack Yes early on there were more for sale in one sale however those sales were way more infrequent. I’ve never added it up but I’d suspect the total number hasn’t changed that much over the years.
@Felton10@Kyeh@werehatrack Chance not change. And thinking about it I think we’d have 1500 up very early on (aka “back in the day”) and those were open for several minutes. I’m too lazy to search for that to see if my numbers are right.
@Felton10@Kidsandliz@werehatrack I dont know that there was a bigger crowd. Took time to get the word out about the web site and the site was glitchy when these sales would occur. Oh Shit reports were common.
Also, the web site is an item a day sale site. If the Fuko, then Fuku sold out there was nothing else to buy for the day. Also, they were not as common. I would say pre-covid you would see less than a handful of sale days a year - guessing three is a good average. So for sure it was super important to check every night at the change over. Even the change over time has changed over the years.
There was a fun April Fools Meh-a-thon where all they sold were Fuku’s, maybe 2017 or 2018? It was crazy, but not common.

@werehatrack @lalall They’d sell out before my page even finished loading.
@Kidsandliz @lalall Same here.
@werehatrack recently, but back in the day it could take several minutes. I think k&l explains below.

@Felton10
That’s only because people didn’t know it was coming so were very casual about when they came to meh at the change over.

Yeah, we were all there for that.

@Felton10 @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @werehatrack yup agree I think it was easier to snag an irk back then.

About five years ago, I could regularly get the daytime IRKs (including non-4PM ET IRKs) on a 4G cell phone with three bars of signal
I just had to be paying attention when they came up because you had to be quick
Then they got more competitive, and I couldn’t get them
Then they started going to small batches and I really couldn’t get them
So I’m an idiot, and I got some tats instead
@f00l And yet you still missed it.
@Kyeh
5 years ago I used to check every day around the changeover time.
I’ve gotten lazier.
@f00l It’s ironic, isn’t it - when it was a challenge to get it seemed much more urgent to try to get one!
@f00l But also - you didn’t check the entire day!
@f00l @Kyeh Well I did flag her, but unfortunately really near “midnight”, when I scrolled the ink for irks and saw she was MIA on the thread…
