@darkzrobe AT&T (The Deathstar logo) is kinda married to another wireless charging method- PMA- and refuses to equip thier phones with Qi compatible devices. Inserts and cases are relatively cheap on Amazon (8$ to set my wife's Galaxy S5 right).
@thismyusername yeah- the best phone i ever had was the HTC DNA with a non-changeable battery. It fried itself in 18 months, but $45 fixed it. It's now a music streaming micro-tablet, and still charging off-leash.
Seems like it would be rather annoying having to unplug the adapter all the time if I wanted to charge my phone elsewhere. It takes me all of about 3 seconds longer to plug in the cable than it would to just lay the phone down to charge. Damn we're truly a lazy society.
@cinoclav there's a 1-2mm thick "pad" that inserts inside your phone back-plate (or a new back-plate with it built in) with leads that cllip between your phone and the battery- they're relatively cheap- and from there, no more cables. Set the phone on the pad, walk away.
@cinoclav It's not just about the extra time to plug it in, it's about saving the connection from getting worn out. Ever have a device that the connection became loose or worn out after time ... yeah, wireless charging saves you from that.
@mehybe But heat isn't good for the components in the phone, and sometimes as I take my Nexus 5 off its Qi pad, it's too hot to touch or to put into my pocket. Every time. I know there's probably a handful of bad connectors out in the world, but the likelihood of long-term damage from that heat seems much more likely.
@editorkid Must have a bad charger or bad phone... my phone has been sitting on the wireless charger for about an hour and a half now and after picking it up it feels luke warm, no where near not being able to touch/hold it. Even after it sits all night it isn't hot, in fact, it's a normal temperature because the cheap $3.50 wireless charging pad I got off ebay (or my lg g3 or combination of both) stop charging when the phone reaches 100%. If it drains a little it'll turn back on until full again. My phone gets hotter using google maps for 15 min than it does sitting on the wireless charger.
@mehybe it's not a bad anything - it has to do with charge rate. Fast charge = hot phone, slow charge = not hot phone. I gurantee your lukewarm phone doesn't go from empty to 100% in an hour.
@alacrity@pbretones I'm quite aware of how it works and what it entails. As I use an iPhone 6+, the only option is the converter pad which plugs into the lightning port. Unless you have a Qi charger everywhere you have to unplug the connector to use a regular lightning cable. So, you still need a device that plugs into an outlet (the Qi charger) and sits on your table. This actually takes up more room than just having the cable. That's not a convenience to me, it's more shit in the way just so I can be extra lazy. @mehybe No, I've never had a port wear out. If I did it means it happened too soon and I'm having it repaired under warranty, or it's too damn old and I'm replacing it anyway. I generally keep my phones for 2 years.
Again, IMHO these things just define how damn lazy our society has become.
@cinoclav It's clearly inconvenient if that's the only way it works with your phone; if your phone has this functionality built-in, though, I don't see anything wrong with the added convenience.
@jqubed I totally agree, if it's built in. Funny how almost all the complaints I've ever read of ports going bad are with Micro USB. Apple gets flack for having their proprietary Lightning but it definitely seems to hold up better.
@cinoclav jeez, dude- you must be a blast to hang out with. First off- you don't apply here. You're a fruit-fly. The closest you'll ever get to off-leash is not tethering your iPhone to the iCloud, or downloading a non-approved app. As to having to unplug the connector- if you have anything not apple, you have options. If you are a fruit-fly- not so much. The joy of Qi is that there is no connector- you just set the phone down and walk away. If you happen to need juice away from a pad, you can still use a leash as needed. For the "clutter" issue: look, numb-nuts- your lightning plug cord still needs to be powered by something, be it a wall charger or a laptop. Same principle, the only difference being a 3" disc to set the phone on or in some instances- a nice stand to rest it on. If that's clutter, man... you got issues I can't begin to address. And finally- your "laziness" issue: It's simply more convenient to use a Qi charger than a cord, and a decent charger will not diminish the life of the phone or battery much more than anything else- they'll shut down at full-charge, and trickle feed as needed. But in all sincerity- I thank you for reinforcing the stereotypical douchiness that fruit-flies embody, and the responses they generate. Somehow, you give off the air of a hipster, but lack the folicular fortitude for a neckbeard, and you've yet to find a mini-fedora that matches your collection of skinny jeans.
@mehybe it's usually the charger's output- most are 1mAh, with the "high power" ones coming in at 1.5-1.9mAh. The cheaper ones will only have a single coil to transmit the power, and that'll concentrate the heat at the source. A good one will have 3 coils and lower amperage to keep the phone cool- but ultimately not much different than having it in your pocket all day, with a faint signal. It'll warm up, but not much past 90 degrees.
@alacrity wow. A lot of pent up resentment there. (Jealousy?) There are plenty of devices and gadgets to go around and to match everybody's preferences without resorting to name-calling. Live and let live.
@alacrity First of all, I didn't call anyone names and I'm going to refrain from doing so to you. I said we're a lazy society. Second of all, just because I have an iPhone doesn't mean I'm an Apple fanboy. I use a pc and a Nexus tablet. I don't use iCloud other than to simply let it backup my contacts.
The basis of my statement was that I would still need to unplug the adapter to charge my phone elsewhere as it's pretty unlikely to have a Qi charger in my car and everywhere I go. As it takes me literally less than 3 seconds to plug in my phone it doesn't bother me in the least that I'm not able to lazily sit my phone down on something to charge it. Not to mention, when I'm charging it I can STILL USE IT in my hand.
Finally, I'm about as far from a hipster as you could imagine (and rather dislike their type.) But I'd be happy to prove that to you in person should you ever be in the Philly area.
@alacrity Lol'd - No worries there. I despise Coldplay and their alter ego, Nickelback. Rush has been my favorite band for 30+ years and you'll probably find a Fat Tire or Alligash White on the bar in front of me.
@cinoclav we share a common interest, then: decent beer. my choice'll always be Anchor Steam wherever available (their Porter, fresh squeezed at the brewery, is almost enough to believe in God(s).) One thing I have to admit is Nickleback... my wife is a fan and I get dragged to the shows. The thing that has made it worthwhile is the fan base- 20-30 yr old, scantily clad, drunk and fun to watch women (sexist? guilty as charged) while listening to Bon Scott era AC/DC.
@alacrity Sounds like we got off on the wrong foot. I'll take Anchor Steam anything but I have to admit I'm jealous of the opportunity to drink it fresh at the brewery. We have some good ones in Philly and one particularly unique brewery growing up the street. Keep your eyes open for Tired Hands brewing down the road. As for Nickelback, I'm sorry. Deeply, deeply sorry. That's some true love you have for your gal. But the fringe benefit does make it sound almost worthwhile to be dragged to their show. Bonus points for old AC/DC.
At first I thought the power banks would run the Qi pad.
I've been wireless charging my LG G2 for about a year and a half now, bought a Fatboy pillow charger with my phone for a ridiculous sum of money, then bought another and a couple of pillowless Nokia pads (which are what's inside the Fatboy) when AT&T was closing them out for $5 and $3 each. Sometimes it's a little finicky to get my phone in just the right place, but the Qi seems to charge faster than generic micro usb chargers, but slower than 2.1a chargers. It is nice to just lay the phone down to charge it and I think it extends the life of the micro usb jack since those always seem to be a failure point.
Now bring me a battery pack with Qi built in and I'm buying, even if it's not really practical.
I've been considering getting a wireless charger for a bit so this deal caught my interest. Then I saw how super limited the reviews are (only one on panasonic's own website). Then I saw that wireless chargers on Amazon can be purchased for around this price or even cheaper. Ones WITH reviews even. Not at all interested in yet another power bank either. Sorry meh.
Ode to the Chargers..( not San Diego) .. On Friday, this charger deal came through but I am not sure what I now should do. Should I buy this charger on a foolish dare or should I balk and simply stare? Oh meh oh meh, the choices are few, thus I am forced to invoke a charger curfew. I had wanted a charger, this much is true, however, this charger I can't buy from you. Greatful indeed meh for all you do but still tonight I must bid you adieu.
Well I came into the forum to see if there was some reason why they hadn't sold out yet. Didn't see anything yea or nay, so I went back to the Main Page to buy it. It was sold out.
Did you at least set one aside for @Pamtha? The timing almost couldn't have been better. I knocked my phone off the nightstand this morning and it stopped charging, but fortunately the cable broke, not the phone.
@jqubed I am sad - I slept through changeover and missed this. I have two Qi pads, so I am OK at the moment. I brought one with me for this camping weekend. Thank you for thinking of me!!!
@TheChrisGlass If I'd have realized that, I probably would have bought one. Solves that pesky problem of having a battery pack but not having plugged it in to charge, so long as I laid it on the pad.
I bought a bunch of the cheapo round ones with the colour rings off eBay for 5 bucks and they work great for phones and other stuff (I have one waterproofed for a wireless speaker in the shower).
@trisk The performance was virtually identical in all of the tested 1 Amp Qi chargers. This makes me suspect that the author's phone limited the charge rate. All of the 1-Amp Qi chargers could put out as much power as that phone wanted.
@editorkid and I both have older chargers that don't work as well. They don't couple the energy to the phone as efficiently as the modern ones. Instead of most of the energy going into the phone's battery, it seems like a lot of it is going in to heating up the phone. Now that I know that isn't normal, I will throw it away (if I can remember where it went).
I know that my Qi charger is a few years old. @editorkid's phone charger might be new, but made with an equally crappy design.
@Pufferfishy in my case, it is not an issue with fast charge rate, as it is not charging very fast. The receiving coil is part of a tuned circuit. A clean sine wave at the right frequency and amplitude will get coupled efficiently into the circuit, and there won't be much waste heat. If the parameters are too far off, then the phone won't get warm, because the energy won't couple into the coil at all. There is a bitter spot (opposite of sweet spot), where the signal is close enough for the coil to receive it, but not close enough for the rest of the circuit to use the energy. This gives us a hot, slowly charging phone.
If I find my bad charger, I will measure the power going in. My phone can measure the power getting to the battery. Those measurements can be used to calculate the efficiency. My guess is that the phone heater charger will really suck compared to what Meh sells. Now that I know that the $5 chargers really work, I will buy a few of those too. I want to be able to plop my phone down and charge it in several different places.
I absolutely love the Qi charger. Wasn't going to even use the battery packs, but then I discovered that the battery packs charge via Qi also. (now it would be even cooler if they could also charge the phones via Qi...)
So, I wonder if you can charge the battery, and plug it into the phone to charge.. i'm going to have to try this out.
"Wireless phone charging, like they do in the future No adapter necessary for most newer Android phones (the ones marked "Qi integrated" on this list) iPhones and older Androids need an adapter, so go buy one of these"
I expected (I know expectations) the Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport to work with this product. Okay it is not a built in Qi phone. Not the end of the word. but there is not way to make it so. Even if I acquire 'one of these' why did you make it seem like a newer phone would work but if it did not I could use an adapter? WHEN IN ACTUALITY I AM SCREWED!!!! depression.
tl;dr Samsung Galaxy S5 Sport/Active users. We're done for and are forever Qi-less.
@connorbush Did you check the list of Qi enabled phones that meh provided in the write-up? While that list includes the Galaxy S5, it says there's an original add-on needed. Looks like you should've done your research a bit more before jumping on the product - meh gave you the info.
@Thumperchick galaxy S5 is good to go but not S5 Sport or Active. They did provide the information; however, the information eluded that if the device weren't QI integrated, an adapter could work. Unlike the original S5, the Galaxy S5 Sport is not compatible with a back plate, case, or adapter.
I am aware that I could have come to the conclusion that my phone was not adapter compatible prior to purchase. As the buyer, it is ultimately my responsibility. I still enjoy blaming meh, or the goat.
@Thumperchick if i am incorrect, please direct me to some sort of avenue that I can explore to make my phone work with the Qi. I mean, it is a solid excuse to get a new phone. ;-)
@connorbush Ah, it seems a truly emotional cursing of current goat, @sohmageek is needed here. I don't think there's a way to make your current device Qi compatible.
@Thumperchick Thank you Mrs. Humper. I'm glad you summoned me to this thread.
@connorbush with a quick googling I found that you can get adapters but it will void the water protection and add an unsightly budge. http://www.androidcentral.com/how-add-wireless-charging-stock-samsung-galaxy-s5-just-10 I'm guessing that it's micro USB if so there are external pads you could get... But at the same time It would also void the water protection. With great protection comes great irresponsibility You could always use another form of protection... I'll let your minds run Wild on that one...
partial NSF warning on the last link. More like not safe for children...
@sohmageek You're welcome for the summons and the blame - though I feel the need to correct one part of your comment. You see, @Humper got his current sn because he's Mr. Thumper - Humper is short for ThumperHumper (classy, yes?) - a named gifted to him by @CaptainSuperDawg. I'm happily the Mrs. to Humper's Mr. - this happenstance just tickles my funny bone, as this is one of the few places where he takes my name, not the other way around.
@Thumperchick very interesting... So I can't call you @humper as that's taken by the hubby... @T may be a little too short... @T-humps? sounds too much like My humps... A song that shouldn't come back around... I guess @tHumperChick works then...
@connorbush I'm sorry, maybe one of the external versions. I was looking for the hack where someone removes a thin film of plastic on the back and builds the coil into it... but I don't see it for that model. You could always try to build it yourself... but I wouldn't do that to my phone.
@connorbush Not a problem, I'm a big fan of QI, but given that there aren't any MFI (another big fan... I've seen what can happen when bad shit happens) Qi that I can find. IF I could... I'd be all over Qi.. and sadly not want the speaker docks. (maybe Meh is in cahoots with Apple to keep Qi off of the iPhone until the speaker docks are sold out.
@sohmageek I am well, thank you for asking. Speaking of brews, I missed out last week when I was in Burlington for some Heady Topper, I was 2 hours too late. However my cousin and I are making plans to go to some local breweries that just opened up by me, so hopefully I can report back with how good they are soon.
@Humper sounds awesome. It's gotten really crazy with the heady topper. I have a hard time getting it and I work less than a 1/4 mile from a store that gets a 1/2 pallet. I'm hoping to score some Lawson's today.
Well after only a few days, the Qi charger suddenly doesn't seem to be working well with my Galaxy S6. It now stops charging before it gets to 100%. When I re-position it to get the blue light, it charges another percent and then shuts off before getting to 100. Bummer. Thought it would last a little longer than this.
@heartny I love mine. Just got my Note 4 back that has the NFC and Qi charging components. Haven't used it that long but it's so easy to charge. Even works through the thick Otterbox case.
I also love the fact you can charge the included battery backup device on the Qi charger. I wish I could buy a second one of these but they did sell out so there's no hope of it being offered again in the future.
The only thing I don't like (so far) is with the backup battery. It only has a single light that is either green or red. It's hard to tell how much power is left in that thing.
@sohmageek Looking at the reviews alone (4625 reviews & 4 1/2 stars) would sell me on that case if I needed it.
*added - Strange, shows awesome reviews, but when you scroll to view them, there aren't any. My assumption would be because this is for the newest model of iPhone which no one from the general public would own. Wonder if the reviews are from the iPhone case..

@AttyVette this deal is shocking!
@AttyVette So watt you're saying is this is one electrifying deal!
@AttyVette this deal sends a power-full message to the target audience.
@AttyVette This deal is pretty popular so far, has a lot of fans that seem grounded.
@connorbush yes I'll make a "plug" for this deal deal u can " bank" on it ( either small or large according to the offer)
@Stallion yes and I'm sure you can MasterCard or visa it since it too is a charger
I'm surprised its not bluetooth!!!!! I was expecting a bluetooth coffee maker!!
If you have a Nokia 1520 with AT&T, even though they say it works on the website... It doesnt. The AT&T Variant has other bits in it.
@darkzrobe AT&T (The Deathstar logo) is kinda married to another wireless charging method- PMA- and refuses to equip thier phones with Qi compatible devices. Inserts and cases are relatively cheap on Amazon (8$ to set my wife's Galaxy S5 right).
live life off-leash.
Qi is awesome- it's a deal breaker if my next phone isn't compatible.
Downside is the batteries toast out after 15-18 months, so score a back-up or two.
@alacrity yea I used a Qi charger once, and when I picked the phone up I caught on to the trick... it was toasty.
I mean especially on phones that have permanent non removable batteries, Qi was made to generate new phones sales.
@thismyusername yeah- the best phone i ever had was the HTC DNA with a non-changeable battery. It fried itself in 18 months, but $45 fixed it. It's now a music streaming micro-tablet, and still charging off-leash.
baby arm compatible?
@robson that would be awesome....., but no.
I don't really understand why meh promotes the people that bought out their first enterprise and ran it into something much less than it was
@Cerridwyn Meh - munificent, magnanimous, charitable, unselfish, greathearted, gallant...
and probably its easier to get someone else to stock all the little fiddly bits to make what you're selling work...
@Cerridwyn because regardless of that, amazon is still pretty awesome...
@pbretones unless, of course, you have to work there
@Cerridwyn Because the stardrive section was already destroyed and Riker had no choice.
@mcanavino high5 for creativity
@Cerridwyn maybe they got paid a lot

Cheers

Meh. I can't find a Mfi qi patch/sticker/anything. So meh. I'd want Mfi certification.
Typo alert:
Charing the small power bank
Want to buy a "g", Or does this mean it will burst into flames?
@heartny Wouldn't that be charring? Unless we're talking about Charing Cross.
@jqubed I thought it should be charring too, but I googled charing and it is defined as, "reduce to carbon or charcoal by incomplete combustion."
@heartny The English language strikes again!
At first I thought the power banks would run the Qi pad.

let's say I don't have a cellphone - then being awake right now is absolutely pointless. swell.
@ekw How? How is this possible? How else would you check Meh while you're sitting on the toilet?
@shawn_mitch That's why God invented iPads.
Well I came into the forum to see if there was some reason why they hadn't sold out yet. Didn't see anything yea or nay, so I went back to the Main Page to buy it. It was sold out.
But I am on the East Coast and could've bought it had I not lollygagged. So no complaining, others who missed out!
Dammit! where are they? I got out of bed for this.
A mere 40 comments and sold out already.
Oh. These batteries charge FROM Qi. I thought the battery packs were self powered portable Qi pads.
Kinda reget my purchase now.
@TheChrisGlass If I'd have realized that, I probably would have bought one. Solves that pesky problem of having a battery pack but not having plugged it in to charge, so long as I laid it on the pad.
Get more.
@Felyne are you new here? Sellouts don't repeat.
Check out the reasons deals repeat at https://meh.com/deals/ooma-telo-and-bluetooth-receiver-1
@AlohaSnackbar i know, i know. Wishful thinking.
aww man... :C
Missed these before they sold out? You can still get decent chargers in the $5-10 price range.
There's a list of common models on XDA with test results (they're all within 10% of each other performance wise).
I have anger with you Meh.
@Thumperchick @sohmageek porrrrr queeeee?!
@connorbush I'm not versed in s5 vs s5 sport, but something like this wouldn't work?
http://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Charger-Receiver-Samsung-Galaxy/dp/B00K7VOCGA/
Or one of the adapters that plugs right into the micro usb?
@connorbush I'll take this off your hands? Galaxy S4 and S6 (I replaced my busted phone!) Here!
@djslack Unfortunately, none of those will work with the S5 sport. Samsung changed too many of the internals.
@Thumperchick Thank you Mrs. Humper. I'm glad you summoned me to this thread.
@connorbush with a quick googling I found that you can get adapters but it will void the water protection and add an unsightly budge. http://www.androidcentral.com/how-add-wireless-charging-stock-samsung-galaxy-s5-just-10
I'm guessing that it's micro USB if so there are external pads you could get... But at the same time It would also void the water protection. With great protection comes great irresponsibility You could always use another form of protection... I'll let your minds run Wild on that one...
@sohmageek I was wondering why I was being summoned to this thread, and now I know. Lol.
@Humper I'm sorry, How have things been now that you're here? Any good brews recently?
@sohmageek thanks for the link HOWEVER that will not work. The inside of the S5 is different than the s5 sport.
@connorbush I'm sorry, maybe one of the external versions. I was looking for the hack where someone removes a thin film of plastic on the back and builds the coil into it... but I don't see it for that model. You could always try to build it yourself... but I wouldn't do that to my phone.
@sohmageek thanks!
@heartny Super bummer. Looks like the Panasonic is covering the warranty for a year - maybe they'll hook up a replacement?
@Thumperchick I'll give it a shot. I do like being able to use this thing without having to remove my beloved purple Otterbox case.
On a brighter note, I am loving the portable charger.
Question for you guys out there... Anyone try this?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00WRRLO2C/ref=pd_luc_rh_sbs_02_06_t_img_lh?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Let me know how it works, or if anyone has tried any of the iphone lightning options with Qi... :)
@Bogie I think the reviews are from the slim armor not the slim armor wth Qi
