I feel like this is one of those products that if you need one, you already have one, and probably don’t need another one. (Maybe a travel one?) Seeing this item here tonight makes my blood pressure rise.
@Yoda_Daenerys not to pry too much, but did your doctor just recently say you needed to buy one and the timing is just perfect, or what? When I needed to buy one, I drove immediately to the drug store and bought one (paid more than this I should add) Lucky timing for you I guess?
@mehdaf I don’t need one, but I also don’t “need” $20 right now. And who knows, regularly checking my blood pressure every month might someday save my life by spotting an issue early.
@mehdaf I already have one, but no bluetooth. For $20 I’m happy to replace it with this one. I’ve also personally had nothing but good experiences with other Oregon Scientific products.
@RiotDemon Yeah, I was gonna say he still had to take it out of the husk. It would have been safer to do that first and then dice it on a safe even surface with the knife not cutting towards your other hand.
@RiotDemon Oh, I didn’t know that. First time watching one of his videos. Me missing a tiny bit of the tip of one of my fingers because of not being careful, makes me take this very seriously!
@ELUNO I could totally understand that. I went and watched the video again and he’s very unsafe. I have done all of those hacks, the watermelon one several times, and you can be much safer when cutting. Plus his knife looks like it’s kinda dull, or undersized for the job because he’s pulling really hard.
@RiotDemon I don’t know how the watermelon one is really a hack… I think it is just easier to take it out of the husk first and then dicing it? I might be wrong though since I haven’t done so in a while…
Also, regarding your last sentence:
/image That’s what she said!
@baqui63 I’ve never heard of this dude before but couldn’t stop watching while simultaneously cringing at his demonstrative & heavy breathing tute. Made me feel bad cause I was laughing through the majority of it not knowing whether he intentionally means to be funny?!
@Jolara just watch some of his other videos. Don’t ever read the comments unless you want to lose all faith in humanity. I watch his videos and I’m amused, but the people in the comments are just cruel.
@conandlibrarian When my doctor started getting higher BP readings for me, he wanted me to cut my salt intake. Since I don’t use all that much salt, I pretty much refused and suggested that we try some drugs first, especially since they have other good side effects for those with mild diabetes. (I don’t go out of my way to use extra salt, but it is such an important flavor enhancer that I don’t see much point to cutting it out unless it is a last resort. Why live a longer yet unhappy life?)
With the stuff I’m currently taking, my pressure goes up to about 125/75 tho it is usually more like 117/68. I’ve lost about 20 lbs since January and I’ve learned that if I don’t have my daily salt supplement (or equivalent) for lunch, my pressure drops too low and I get lightheaded if I stand up quickly. As I lose more weight, I’ll probably have to cut back on the snake venom or else increase my salt intake.
@conandlibrarian My blood pressure is way lower then in the DR office when I test at home (also lower at our annual office health screenings). I have a withings version that tracks over time in an app and my doctor loves it.
@baqui63 Do you eat processed foods? (Boxed meals, frozen dinners, canned soups etc) That’s usually the majority of Americans’ salt intake, not table salt added to meals or in home cooking.
If you’d clicked the salt supplement link I included in the above reply you’d have answered your own question.
I keep a stack of such things (not only Lean Cuisine but also Healthy Choice, Weight Watchers, Caribbean Delights and others) in the freezer at work. I buy them when they drop below $3 (5 for $10 happens and 4 for $10 is not uncommon) so that I have cheap calories available with little effort because I tend to lose weight when I eat 200-300 calories every three to four hours vs skipping meals and then overeating. That these things also work to keep me from passing out is merely a side benefit.
DU1 has similar heart issues to me (bradycardia, arrhythmia) and the Rx for her is lots of water and don’t avoid salt. (Her arrhythmia is nowhere near the point of needing a pacemaker, but then mine wasn’t at her age either. Hopefully she never gets OSA, which is likely what damaged my heart to the point of needing a pacemaker.)
Just a comment for anyone considering this who has a pacemaker: these things use the oscillometric method to determine the blood pressure reading. For people with an arrhythmia (i.e. those with a pacemaker), this method can give wildly varying readings (say off by 200% or more, or just repeated ERR readouts).
While I generally get fairly reasonable readings from most automatic machines (say at CVS), the only for-sure way to measure bp for those of us with an arrhythmia is to listen for the Korotkoff sounds with a stethoscope (or microphone). This is how I do it at home and it is not hard to learn, presuming you don’t have really bad hearing.
FWIW, I picked this up for the parts in it, more than to use it for taking anyone’s bp.
@wew, @christinerenee I’m thinking a small compressor and some pressure sensors, plus a bunch of standard stuff that is either useful (eg. batteries) or effectively junk (eg. the special purpose electronics).
I’ll open it up and see. If it doesn’t look good, I’ll put it back together and either give it away, sell it (who am I kidding?) or just add it to the piles of crap.
Even with my array of health problems, I can’t convince myself I want or need this. Shucks. A heart rate monitor, on the other hand… I would be all over that shit. (My medication for my overeager heart keeps my blood pressure consistently low!)
My first thought was, “looks ok, but I want one with bluetooth.” Then I realized it DOES have bluetooth! Yay! I’ve been wanting to become one of those crazy quantified self people!
@boxmeh look at it this way, if it were not paused, you still would not be buying it because it would be sold out. so the end result to you is the same
@chowland Considering they sold 499 in 2 hours 8 minutes, then paused, then sold 262 and paused again after 12 minutes, I am amazed I was able to buy 2 at 8AM.
I am on the East Coast and love the Pause, Cause I have to be up at 5AM and these deals are real… and meh.
@RiotDemon You keep saying that. If everyone were here at midnight, the competition would be crazy and the usual mid-nighters would start to cry because it would be paused at 12:01 instead of 2am.
@medz Which would force meh to adjust the circuit breaker threshold to have more quantity at midnight until almost 100% is available at midnight thus negating the whole point of the breaker.
This is something I certainly don’t want to need, but I should as a responsible adult? I could use the 20 bucks to buy some delicious and tasty greasy food!
Bought the one Meh had in March (different brand) for the same price because the one my wife had was several years old. She always gets different results at home & the doctors office anyway.
Although its a good deal more expensive-its pretty heavily discounted and its kind of like the one you see in the supermarket with a rigid cuff you slide your arm into.
Ordered it about a week ago on a one day sale-which is the same price its listed for today and was out of stock when I ordered it with a estimated delivery time at the end of September.
I bought one last night. I had a cuff one I bought from Groupon but it was misplaced, so rather than go rip the entire house and cabinets apart I’ll spend the $20. Thanks Meh!
Damn sold out and something that I had a need. Oh well relatives will just be in the dark about their BP until I find another cuff with a reasonable price.
Very disappointing, I started clicking refresh on the main page at 3:59pm and never saw the option to purchase. Looks like they only had 39 in reserve but I am surprised I never saw the option to purchase.
Well, got the Blood Pressure Monitor (BCM) on Fridy while I was out of town and unboxed it last night. It starts to pressurize and throws up an Err 1 every time. Called Oregon Scientific and it was quite comical. Instructed me (in broken English) to take out the batteries for 10 to 15 min, put them back in and press the 3 buttons for 10 seconds. So I said “all at the same time?” and she said “no, not at the same time, press them simultaneously”
“That is what that word means” I said. “So sorry, what I mean is press them together” she said. " but that is what you told me not to do" I said. " Sorry, I mean press them separately for 10 seconds." If it doesn’t work she said that if Meh doesn’t have one then to call back and choose another “unit” from their store. They are sold out of that BPM and they don’t have any other BCM’s on their website! A third party has some though (looks like the same company). So I can get a weather monitor instead. Thanks. Anyone else getting that error?
@kevin8er i get it if i don’t have the cuff tight enough when i start. get it pretty snug before pressing power and user. the hose is supposed to be on top of your elbow pit.
When I get my blood pressure measured with this device it keeps giving me much higher readings than I get at the doctors, the blood pressure measurement things at stores, etc. Or it gives me an error. Am I doing something wrong?

@mehdaf i need one, i don’t have one, sold!

Shop smart, shop Ssmart.
@stevenmontes Got any boom sticks?
I almost bought this when I saw it, I said that is a COOL LOOKING PHONE!!! then was like oh…
Respect to @Kylethephotoguy for making these look interesting in photo form each time.
I’d get it, but I already got one.
/giphy i told him we already got one
Nice deal. Even a non-bluetooth version of this would cost a lot more.
Got one for my gadget loving and newly health-interested stepdad. Almost done with my xmas shopping, and well under budget. Thanks, meh!

@Yoda_Daenerys I love the Crazy Russian Hacker.
@baqui63 safety is number one priority!
@RiotDemon Yeah, I was gonna say he still had to take it out of the husk. It would have been safer to do that first and then dice it on a safe even surface with the knife not cutting towards your other hand.
@ELUNO I didn’t watch the episode this time, he just says that every episode.
But he’s not that safe sometimes… Recently he actually had his whole arm bandaged. I’m going to assume he burnt it on something.
@RiotDemon Oh, I didn’t know that. First time watching one of his videos. Me missing a tiny bit of the tip of one of my fingers because of not being careful, makes me take this very seriously!

A non-speaking vid for a talking BP monitor
I do not need a machine to tell me what a fat ass I am, I already hear that from my doctor as he is writing out my latest blood pressure prescription.
@conandlibrarian i have my spouse to tell me, saves a trip to the dr.
@conandlibrarian When my doctor started getting higher BP readings for me, he wanted me to cut my salt intake. @HemlockTea “That’s because more than 75 percent of the sodium in the average American diet comes from salt added to processed foods.”
@HemlockTea lol
If you’d clicked the salt supplement link I included in the above reply you’d have answered your own question.

@baqui63 i didn’t see the link! I freaking love lean cuisine tortilla crusted tilapia and the butternut squash ravioli XD
Maybe Oregon Scientific could program these helpful phrases into the next version:
Maybe we should all come up with phrases?

Just a comment for anyone considering this who has a pacemaker: these things use the oscillometric method to determine the blood pressure reading. @baqui63 good to know! I was considering one, but pretty much my entire family has some kind of arrythmia.
@baqui63 what great parts does it have in it?
@wew yes, I want to know too
@wew, @christinerenee I’m thinking a small compressor and some pressure sensors, plus a bunch of standard stuff that is either useful (eg. batteries) or effectively junk (eg. the special purpose electronics).

@gommiebears I got one at 4 and got to sleep in too! Thanks New Meh!

anyone know where to get the DC IN plug?
@Yoda_Daenerys I was wondering the same, myself. Or what kind of generic plug would work.
Well, got the Blood Pressure Monitor (BCM) on Fridy while I was out of town and unboxed it last night. It starts to pressurize and throws up an Err 1 every time. I get the same error. Doesn’t matter which arm or how tight or loose the cuff is.
When I get my blood pressure measured with this device it keeps giving me much higher readings than I get at the doctors, the blood pressure measurement things at stores, etc. Or it gives me an error. Am I doing something wrong?
