Gee, I never considered that the ants’ annual invasion of my house could have some deep religious meaning, but they’ve never formed a circle and chanted my name before I put out the ant traps.
NSFW webcomic OGLAF has what I deem the best interpretation of a higher power: one that is completely insane and irrelevant. (the strip’s title, or /backslash after the homepage if you want skip the other smut, “Sithrak”; also see: “Throne-Heaven”)
“Have you noticed life is cruel and insensible? That’s because the creator is angry and insane!”
“When you die, Sithrak tortures you forever; whether you were good or not. I find that lack of responsibility really liberating.”
“No matter now bad your life is, it gets worse after! Stay alive as long as you can!”
“Nothing you do will make Sithrak angry; they were angry already! Convert to Sithrak: the God who hates you unconditionally!”
@Cerridwyn@tweezak So why settle for some one that will promise stuff & then breaks that promise after they get into office
Go for the one that will be the Worst! Cthulhu is the best at being the Worst!
@Cerridwyn Yes I signed up! A former con in Roanoke, Va (I went to it one year) Cthulhu was its Patron saint. But Covid took it out! It was called MystiCon!
@mycya4me Semi sounds familiar, i used to, eons ago, be fairly familiar with the con circuit, not in many years and only attended a few east coast in NJ (Cali girl) but I usually say my ex got the con circuit in the split
@Cerridwyn Yes I have done many of the Mid Atlantic cons. Like:
Shore Leave - MD now PA.
MarsCon -Va
RavenCon - Va
ConVivial - VA new
GalaxyCon 1st year in Richmond, Va. Will NOT be back!
CosPlay World - Va It was ok!
Some that I want to to attend:
DragonCon
SDCC
Con Carolina
@mycya4me I did many westish coast back in the 70s 80s and early 90s. After the breakup, I didn’t do anything for awhile, then a friend did Ubercon in NJ and I went multiple times (from CA)
I went to ConJose (worldcon) a few years ago and honestly I didn’t like at all the changes in the atmosphere.
Back when, all of them were fan run. The idea was to break even, not make a profit. In fact, many had charities that ‘left over’ funds were donated to. The positive charge in the air was pretty awesome. My first Star Trek cons had, at some points, everyone but Shatner there, and they were not getting paid. (many sold autographed pictures and such) There was a lot of respect, not the chaos, not the entitlement you see today (I could tell stories, lots of stories, like my ex and David Gerrold getting wasted sitting on the window ledge of a Sin Diego hotel (Really surprised neither of them fell a few stories))
I miss what was, not what is. I think it is a reflection on the times.
@Cerridwyn Yes the Best ones are Fan run.
They would like to have some left over so they could have seed for next year, Yes they do have a Auction. the is for the charity the con has chosen, many time it is an Animal shelter.
I mentioned GalaxyCon, they are all about making a Buck, they think other cons are their competition, they will NOT any one post flyers for their cons. With in the Fan run circuit they are getting a Bad name due to that! sadly so many mundanes/ newbies don’t know any better.
@mycya4me 45 plus years ago I was known as Lady Kyna Annalisa Dunmore. SCA politics sort of drove us away from there. Things that are still not completely admitted to here in CAID. And I’ve been to a few different Renaissance Fairs in festivals, again West Coast. Sometimes I miss it. But I miss what was not what is now. I went to ren fair in Northern California the two years I lived in the Central Coast I went to one of the smaller Renaissance festivals here a few weeks ago not the big one and in all honesty it was boring as hell to me.
@Cerridwyn I have heard that the higher you get into the Ranks of SCA, I have heard that the politics can kinda get to ya. Due to cash flow issues I had to drop out & was never more than low peasant. Being I am also into Photography I love to shoot. got some good shots at Ruby Joust.
That is the reason that here on the East coast another group has sprung up. I have seen them with a booth at the cons. but it just a local thing, to far for me to do stuff with.
The local SCA chapter is the Barony of Caer Mear in the Kingdom of Atlantia. they put on Ruby Joust over Memorial day weekend.
There is another group that also put on a Ren Fair on a winery property. Virginia Renaissance Fair (varf dot org)
I do suggest maybe trying one of the 1st 3 I mentioned All on the east coast They are cheap for the weekend Hotel prices are not that bad either. not far from airports either. Many of the Music acts you see at DragonCon come here. The best part you might have total of 1500 max. Since I have been attending since 1970’s I have come to know quite a few of them, they have become like another family. That is what the Fan run cons around here try to do make you feel like family!
@Cerridwyn during Covid MarsCon was holding bimonthly Zoom “family gathering” you know we shot the Bull about everything (except the 2 forbidden subjects) they were about 4 hours long. Even had a virtual con that weekend. with our Fav Music person Mikey Mason (look him up- I love his song “The Opposite of Cool”)
@mycya4me I will
I know some of the biggies, and really enjoy them. Even though some of the songs are, cough, dated. I enjoy Marc Gunn and the BBards and loved Emerald Rose. I usually fall asleep before the filk starts at cons being the damned lark I am.
@Cerridwyn But the smaller cons do have their place, they are Family! I am not sure if Calf can even do small fan run ones??
As I said I have been attending cons for 40+ years. I guess by biggest con I have attended was Shore Leave (before Covid - aka BC) I had signed up as a supporter of DC World con, It was at the end of Covid, But due to Cash Flow issues & I was my Mom’s Caregiver I could not attend. (they even had to change main hotels)
I am serious if you can try one of our east coast cons. the biggest expense will be getting here.
@Cerridwyn Hey the East coast has a lot of advantages, as most of my Fav cons are in the Historic Triangle, (JamesTowne, Williamsburg & Yorktown), & the ocean is close too. (Atlantic that is)
FYI I have met “Artist Ghost of Honor – Frank Kelly Freas”, He lived in Va. Beach & through his connections got some pretty big people come to the little cons here in Virginia! We were so lucky!
@mycya4me yeah I’ve never been down to that part of the East coast. Ubercon was in New Jersey pretty much newark. And the person who ran it lived either in Pennsylvania or in the outskirts of Baltimore so I’ve been in New York New Jersey, and then drove to and from Pennsylvania or down to baltimore. But I’ve never been into that area that you’re talking about although it’s been on my tempted list.
@mycya4me oh speaking of Kelly Freas, did you ever read the capture? The published version is technically a coloring book. I actually saw the original presentation done on an overhead projector yep and overhead projector, 1975 76 somewhere back there and actually it wasn’t the first presentation it was the second
@Cerridwyn well I have temped you with a Couple good cons. Plus a whole lot of see History wise too.
I will try to make it to MarsCon, I will be at ConVivial as I preReg at the end of the Con, this was it’s 1st year, But due to all that was running it & those attending (I would guess 90+%) of Con family was that, it had the feeling of a Con that had been around for way many years!
Plus as I said RavenCon (after Edger Allen Poe after all it was birthed in Richmond, Va (RVA aka Rivah City) BTW my email is Mycya4me @ yahoo dot com (email has spaces and obvious munge added by mod to prevent botscrapung.)
@Cerridwyn No I never saw “capture? The published version is technically a coloring book.” But I do have a copy of his book that has ALL the ST original stars He painted, I hear those now cost way up there! I got it directly from him cheap! I do Believe that the Con was called SciCon it was in the late fall!
@shahnm and sir goat
thank you for the rabbit hole
my friends and family are are cackling and think one of you should change your name and make this your campaign, can’t be worse, right?
@Cerridwyn You are very welcome, I Am glad you enjoyed it! As far as my name goes… I have had it for a long time! I enjoy a nice ROTFLOL at times… & giving them is even Better!
Gee, I never considered that the ants’ annual invasion of my house could have some deep religious meaning, but they’ve never formed a circle and chanted my name before I put out the ant traps.

@Cerridwyn @mycya4me
@Cerridwyn @mycya4me @tweezak Don’t forget your merch.
@mycya4me @tweezak @yakkoTDI I love them both
@Cerridwyn @mycya4me @yakkoTDI Zoidberg 2024
@Cerridwyn @tweezak So that makes Cthulhu so much better! He only promises to be the worst!
@Cerridwyn @mycya4me And we all know how it goes with politicians and promises. Or the truth, for that matter.
@Cerridwyn @tweezak So why settle for some one that will promise stuff & then breaks that promise after they get into office
Go for the one that will be the Worst! Cthulhu is the best at being the Worst!
Muhahahaha

POPSOCKETS! SPROCKETS! DAVY CROCKETT! AWESOME!
@Cerridwyn Yes the Best ones are Fan run.

@mycya4me not many of those left here in SoCal
Creation did in the ST con and well . . .
@Cerridwyn Yes I remember Creation Con back in the early days. I do believe they did a good job, it was more about the fans, Not all about the money!
I also attend RenFairs/ SCA events too!
@mycya4me 45 plus years ago I was known as Lady Kyna Annalisa Dunmore. SCA politics sort of drove us away from there. Things that are still not completely admitted to here in CAID. @mycya4me That is so cool.
I missed CAID’s first coronation, as my daughter decided that was the right day to be born, As a result, my daughter missed it too.
Barony of Dreiburgen and we are far enough from LA to be a poor stepchild, especially back then
@Cerridwyn during Covid MarsCon was holding bimonthly Zoom “family gathering” you know we shot the Bull about everything (except the 2 forbidden subjects) they were about 4 hours long.
