OMG - Yes I want a VirtualBoy again!
3I remember when I first got mine… They were on sale. Likely because nobody was buying them… But I saved my money and got one. Then I placed my first game… WARIO… At first i was like… wtf is this. Then I was mesmorized by the red screen in front of me. Though it was the most anti social gaming system I have ever used… It was pretty darn cool.

I picked up mine cheaply several years ago because it was broken. I fixed it myself. It came with two games: Mario Clash (a neato 3D variant of the original Mario Bros. Arcade), and Virtual Boy Wario Land, which is actually a nice deep game and a lot of fun. Over a couple years I was able to assemble the full kit, including the visor, stand, and adapter, so no more sucking 6 AA batteries per day, haha! It’s a really novel system that works as intended, but it was ahead of its time, underappreciated, and overpriced. Had Nintendo waited long enough for green and blue LEDs to become cheap enough to create a full-color 3D display, I think the console could have done better. It remains a fascinating bit of history.
@PooltoyWolf If they re-released it as a full color Wii accessory, it still would have been ahead of its time. I only played it plugged in however. Couldn’t afford the batteries.
@makhay I was lucky to get mine with an AC adapter. Protip: the same adapters are used for the SNES and the Virtual Boy!
I’m just glad Nintendo made the 3DS work. I could scarcely believe it when I first beheld it…one of the reasons why I’m frustrated Nintendo is now downplaying it as a technology. I get that the Switch will probably be replacing it as a unified home and handheld console, but capitalizing on the (IMO totally pointless) 2DS seems disingenuous and silly.
I might be willing to part with mine
Hahha, right? Loved the name-drop!
Picked mine up, in like '97? Was on clearance @ WallyWorld for under $30 and was the only one. Stuck that sucker on layaway to hold it while I ran back home for cash (was a minor at the time) as another kid was eyeballing it hard too, hahahaha.
This was about a week before going to a trade school that housed students on campus. I was the only one with a gaming system in a dorm of abt 40 guys.
Had Wario and Mario Tennis. That thing got played hours on end for a solid 18 months that I was there. Sold it for $150 before I left.
I miss that thing!! And now, I’m off to do some light eBay stalking for VB while I very-impatiently wait for the Fuko delivery today.
We still have one in an old Blockbuster hardshell case that my husband got years ago. I’ve played it a handful of times and get a headache every time lol
Still it’s a cool system.
@stardate820926 Having the Blockbuster rental case is awesome…that’s another piece of A/V history!
@PooltoyWolf @stardate820926
(Earlier this year, I finally shredded a Blockbuster membership card.)
@PlacidPenguin @stardate820926 I would’ve kept that as a souvenir from the past! Haha
@PooltoyWolf @stardate820926
While shredding it, I was thinking that maybe I should stop.
@PlacidPenguin @stardate820926 It’s too late now XD
Mine is sitting on my desk right now.
