I wonder how good the microphone is. I have another webcam that I never use and a decent microphone, but there is always issues with it picking up gaming noise instead of just me.
@EvilSmoo most webcam microphones are barely an afterthought, which is to say just a step above the laptop mic that they stuck inside the fan to save a third of a cent on production cost.
Until you start getting up to high end webcams that talk about noise cancellation or beamforming or anything like that, you’re likely looking at a maximum quality of “decent”.
If you have a noise issue and need to really be isolated from background noise, your cheapest option is likely something like this: https://a.co/d/1ZWP8Bo - the biggest deal is putting the microphone close to your mouth. I have no experience with that specific model though, just looked for a cheap one that looked decent.
I hate it when interviewers ask for a webcam recording of you answering questions.
Am I going to not get the job because I looked bad on the mid range camera I rarely use?
@djslack@Kyeh djslack is right on th money. Originally planned on $14.99 but we chose to drop our pants. That said, Chili’s can kinda be considered a sports bar and their $10.99 3-for-me is an incredible deal for their “super smasher” burger!
I bought one in 2021 and it works fine. Nice clear video on meetings. Nothing remarkable, just a reliable workhorse. Can’t speak to the mic since I use a Jabra speaker. I paid $35 for it and it was worth it. Definitely worth $10.
@UncleMel I got a Logitech 920 (right before the pandemic lockdowns and shift to remote work made them impossible to find for awhile — it was a Christmas 2019 gift), and it’s still notably better than the quality of most peoples’ cameras and microphones all this time later.
This actually looks like it’s a deliberately-imitative knockoff of that, the same way suddenly every wireless earbud turned white when Apple brought out Airpods.
Has actual reviews, not just 'bots. Seems people really like it at ~$40 - so for $10 if you need a cam this seems a no brainer.
Reviews do seem to say the mic is merely passable. But it does work.
Several people comment about failures after a couple months - and the company sent them replacement units (albeit “refurbs” - which is just fine IMO a maybe there’s an issue they’ve addressed)

@mediocrebot ehhh. Image generators are tied up by so many rules to try and prevent them from making “problematic” images…
Apparently, if I add my own speakers and a USB power source, this webcam is a speaker dock.

The manual isn’t much help, but it does convey the same message in several languages.

I don’t know what kind of dives our dear writer is hanging out in but I don’t think I’ve seen a sports bar burger this cheap since maybe 2019.
@djslack I was wondering about that too; I don’t go to sports bars but even food trucks charge more than that.
@Kyeh maybe they were targeting $15 when they wrote it.

When it comes to webcams, just get a Logitech and be done with it! They are a leader for a reason.
