New Orleans Jazz Festing in Place 2021
10
Since the rescheduled Jazz Fest for this fall isn’t going to happen due to the recent resurgence of COVID this summer, WWOZ is hosting a “Jazz Festing In Place” event by broadcasting some of the best performances from past years in a virtual Fest, “cubes” and all.
The event is this weekend (October 7-10) and next (October 14-17).

And here’s the famous “cubes” (the schedule of who is on what stage when):

Have to say, listening to today’s lineup was outstanding, top to bottom. Ready for tomorrow. The weather here is perfect Fest weather.

Darn! Missed today; guess I’ll try to set it up tomorrow at work.
I have to say: I’ve experienced a decent number of the ‘cubes’ scheduled live in concert at one time or another, and many of the others via recordings (much simpler, of course, especially nowadays).
From this weekend: Zachary Richard, Lyle Lovett, Buckwheat Zydeco, Irma Thomas; Bonnie Raitt, Gatemouth Brown, Dirty Dozen Brass Band; Marcia Ball (maybe my favorite), B.B. King, Stevie Wonder, Wolfman Washington, Champion Jack Dupree, Dr. John; Little Queenie, Terence Blanchard, Allman Brothers.
Regret never having seen Duke Ellington, Mahalia Jackson, and Professor Longhair; still holding out hope for Samantha Fish, Jon Batiste, and John Mayer.
@compunaut “live in concert” ain’t the same as live from Jazz Fest.
There’s definitely a hometown vibe from the musicians, and then there’s the legendary Jazz Fest performances that we will never hear again (mainly due to licensing reasons).
Aretha, Clapton, Stevie Wonder, and the forever banned from JF, George Clinton, Bootsy, and the P-Funk mothership.

How did various musicians manage to get banned?
@mike808 I know that JazzFest performances can be special; I’ve been fortunate to attend 3 times so several listed were seen @ JF or in NOLA during JF
I first saw Marcia Ball live @ Maple Leaf ('93? '94 maybe?). After opening act started at midnight, she (and her band) came out at 2am and blew the place away.

Have you been to a George Clinton & the P-Funk All-Stars concert? You’d know.
BTW, they come every other year or so and have a concert in town during Jazz Fest. And like the norm for the best concerts, the opening act (Hot 8 Brass Band, btw who also put on a show) doesn’t start until midnight.
Hence the signs: “Happy Hour 5-7, twice a day”.
I’m hoping the Henry Butler 2007 performance on the second Sunday is the one I’m thinking of, because it was amazing live.

Jazz Festing in Place has several food vendors listed with delivery/mail-order available. Are any of them worth that extra trouble?
@compunaut Anything fried doesn’t travel. And you can get crawfish monica in the local Rouse’s. I think I even saw crawfish bread. Personally, I’m not a fan of Vaucresson’s or Patton’s sausage. Too greasy and hot.
JF food is just one of those things that is strictly a JF tradition for me. They’re just not things I think of eating when I’m not at JF. Because no matter what, it won’t be the same, with one exception (a certain poboy I wont disclose is pretty much the same everywhere in NOLA).
The Rose-Mint tea is another winner for me.
