New kitty needs a name
14My dad’s girlfriend got a cat for one of her kids, not knowing the other kid was allergic. They didn’t want to take her back to the shelter so now she’s mine.
I’m terrible at deciding on names, and now its been a few days of her being “hey” and kissy noises.
She’s about 2 and the name the shelter gave her was Echo, but I’m not sure I’m feeling that.
Some of my short list names are:
Marshmallow/Marsha
Frank/Frankie/Francine/Francesca
Toast
Harvey
Dylan
Ellie/(one of the many longer versions of that)
Veronica
Spaghetti
Molly
I need help picking one, and am open to more suggestions.

I vote Molly! She definitely looks like a Molly.
She’s beautiful. I like Marshmallow.
Such a pretty cat! Looks kind of like one I have named Stitch. I named her that because she looks like she was stitched together with all the leftover parts from the litter which contained calicos and siamese. Hope you find the perfect name!
P.S. I also had a cat named Molly, so I’m partial to that as well.
@gogrrl Wow she looks a lot like yours.
@sammydog01
Yes! I had never seen one that looked like Stitch until now.
She looks like she’s got ink blots on her, so my first thought was “Smudge.”
But then I remembered the word for Japanese ink, and thought you could call her “Sumi”! Which is actually a girl’s name in Japan.
The name Sumi is a girl’s name of Japanese origin meaning “elegant, refined”.

Marshmolly.
She’s absolutely adorable.
Molly is okay
I’d say what endears her to you the most. My daughter named her current cat’s call name as Droodle, cause he drools when you scratch his belly (unlike many cats he likes it) and then she gave him a long formal name, we always did that when she was young.
I’d name her Mary Margaret Blue and call her Molly just from the pictures, but maybe something else would be a name trigger.
(her previous cat was Trill, because she didn’t meow, she trilled)
Beautiful!!!
Toast is the only name on the list that jumped out at me. She’s beautiful!
Scrotor
If you give her time she’ll name herself. It’s how our cats have been named stuff like B&W, Fuzzers, Sam Hooker, and Bear to name a few. B&W stands for Black and white which she was both in color and temperament and Bear is a manx that walked like a bear cub when she was a tiny little kitten. It just stuck. We also have a Tabby named Ghost. shrugs
She looks like a Mia to me. Beautiful markings!!
She looks like a Molly who’s been playing in a marsh (the dark legs and dappled head), so I vote for Marsh Molly –
Ems, for short.
Once upon a time I had a student as a next-door neighbor who got two kittens from somewhere. The male was called Otto. Whenever the male meowed, the female would answer, so she got named Echo. The names seemed to fit very well. Very cute and friendly kittens.
When her lease was up, I helped her move with my truck. She took Otto and Echo with her.
About a week later, I got a call from her; she wanted me to help her bury Echo, who had gotten hit by a vehicle. I soon lost track of her and Otto.
@phendrick Not sure why that first paragraph came out bold – I put no markup there, and I couldn’t edit it out.
??
@phendrick it was your liberal use of dashes that did it.
@RiotDemon Thanks for the fix. I didn’t remember dashes being markup, I’ll have to go back and re-read the meh mark-down page. I did notice that when I tried to edit the bold out, I no longer saw the dashes that I knew I had put in to separate lines, so was wondering if that could somehow be related. (I do like a variety of punctuation.)
@phendrick you don’t need dashes for a space, just hit enter twice.
If you name her Molly, she’ll have lots of company - it tops several recent lists of most popular pet names:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popular_cat_names
Scratch Fury, Empress of all Feliformes.
She does look like a toasted marshmallow, though.
I name pets after my favorite things. My rescue cats are named Ziva and Gibbs my favorite characters on NCIS. Hubby’s red nosed pit is named Ruby after my late mom. As someone else said they sometimes name themselves. Granddog Millie became Millicent Jane when she did something horrible that required two names. It just popped out in the heat of the moment. Your kitty has a regal look to me. Princess Diana? Lilibet, which I think was Queen Elizabeth’s nickname when she was young. Princess, Her Majesty, called Maji, Cleopatra. She is a beautiful kitty.
I had been leaning towards Molly and seeing it as a favorite here made me give it a shot. The kitty seems to disagree. Mia and cleo have made the list. Not sure what name I’m gonna try next.
And yes, I’m showcasing her different colored eyes. One blue and one gray, but the gray one photos purple which is neat.
@metaphore ugh I just wanna hold her!
@metaphore So pretty!!!
@metaphore What name have you finally settled on? Did the kitty OK it?
@phendrick Tentatively, her name is Freya. We’ll see if it sticks.
@metaphore Freya – goddess of fertility. (Is that an omen, or do you plan on having her spayed relatively soon? )
@phendrick She is already spayed, and I’m leaning a bit more towards the “battle, war, and death” part that shes is also a goddess of.
@metaphore Poor thing, made into a nun at such a young age, probably without being consulted first…
Your alter take on the name reminds me of a friend of a friend who thirty some years ago had a cute cat that would stand up on its hind legs and get into a boxing pose. She called it “Fighta-bite-a” (not sure of her spelling of that.) That kitten had lots of personality. Unfortunately I didn’t see it much, just when she brought it with her, visiting.
You can probably find some Ronda Rousey match videos to use to train your kitty. I’d like to have RR with me if I had to venture down a dark alley. (A different kind of “hell cat”.)
Keep us informed of your pet’s prowess. (Looks like Freya could also do magic, including augury.)
@phendrick Heterochromia always feels a little bit magic so that part fits too. She’s currently at war with the couch, and has killed one house plant and caused another to need to be relocated. She’s also convinced me to part with sums of money, so she hits on most of the points her namesake is deity of.
@metaphore Be sure to expose her to some of David Bowie’s best (though I read one article that claimed he said in an interview that it was not that condition, but rather an eye injury when he was a teen, IIRC).
/youtube David Bowie - Changes (Live)
seems appropriate in y’all’s situation, with all the changes you and your growing feline will be living through. You can see his eyes pretty clearly in this vid.
My pooch dug out a very nice aloe plant which had gotten quite large in its pot. I managed to resurrect it from a couple of shards and now a couple of years later, it’s bigger than before – but now also way outta her reach.
She still claims she’s innocent.
She has killed at least two possums that have come into our back yard. They come for the cat food I put out for the feral cats in the neighborhood. (There are pockets of woods around our houses and I did have trouble with rodents, but now have not seen any mice or rats for years, just squirrels.) I’ve counted as many as nine cats feeding there at one time.
Lately, I’ve been trying to keep her from bothering several small kittens that have been around, a litter of at least three. She had one cornered, but it put up a good hissing, spitting defense that caused her pause before I got her away. I don’t know if she’d kill a kitten, but I don’t want to find out. There is one older cat that jumps up to the kitchen window where I put food out specifically for it, and they tend to ignore each other for the most part.
Love your photo of Freya under the cushion.
similar markings as my friends late “Miss Kitty”…
Awww. Pretty kitty. Looks like maybe a little Siamese mix to me.
I like Marshmeow from the list. The eyes and window pictures make me think of Miss Chiff. Her name will just click into place when you try the right one.
I kind of like your option of Spaghetti but how about Ziti instead?
@yakkoTDI Or Noodles, which was my cats nickname. Or maybe Pasta Drop
@yakkoTDI The Tortimese that lives here is named Noodle because she used to spend a lot of time in a ramen box; her other name is “pasta kitty”. We also have a pure white ex-feral-momcat with a lap addiction and an Attitude, who earned the name Freya.
