My new baby
32Late last year an old friend posted pictures of her new kitten. I loved him, thought he was so beautiful. But I was just dealing with losing my Zuzu, and couldn't imagine loving another cat. Cut to a couple weeks ago, when she posts that she just can't keep him. Her dogs are just too aggressive with play. Boom, guess who we brought home last night. He's a monster, at only 10 months. His name is Dumbledore. He's amazing. We've got some work ahead getting him in shape, but he will be happy with us I hope.

Awww... He's got your evil stare
@hallmike Ok, that's just creepy. @mfladd said the same thing.
@jaremelz Great minds...
@jaremelz
If @hallmike and @mfladd both said that, it must be true then.
@hallmike He's probably got her claws, too.
@Barney Hey, he resembles that remark..no, wait. That's not right....
@hallmike
@Barney
@mfladd @hallmike @Barney
The only kind of cat I prefer is a black cat. I find them relaxing and soothing.
Any other kind of cat kinda freaks me out.
@hallmike My new mother is who? Nooooooooo!
Honestly @jaremelz, Congrats to you and kitty!
@FroodyFrog I really love black cats. But the only one we have had, my husband got while i was out of town and she bonded to him and absolutely hated me as a result.
This boy seems to see me as his mama already. Happy dance!
@mfladd Look, it's something you've never experienced before.
And then you go and edit. Am I supposed to be nice now???
@jaremelz Funny how they choose their human. My wife could offer our big Siamese a steak and he would just walk past her like she didn't exist, to get to me.
@hallmike
What kind of steak?
@hallmike Oh, she would have done that, and pissed in my shoe on the way for good measure.
He's a beautiful, big baby boy, and that's a lot of fluff to Furminate. You're a wonderful cat person for giving him a safe home.
@OldCatLady When I saw the first pic I thought she just felted herself a cat.
@OldCatLady Thank you. It was time to try and open up to another new furrybaby. Of course, it remains to be seen whether the old man cat will feel the same.
@hallmike @OldCatLady
I wouldn't be surprised if @jaremelz ended up doing that. (Possibly even making bigger ones and descendants to keep up with the passing of time.)
Am i reading too much into it?
@FroodyFrog Nope, totally would.
@jaremelz
On one paw that's kinda sad, on the other paw, totally mehpic.
Also, just throwing this out there:
@FroodyFrog We will have to keep an eye out for that
@jaremelz
Bit confused. For what exactly?
@hallmike She could save the cat hair, turn it into yarn and do that...
@FroodyFrog For the inflatable feline, silly. Nothing like insta-puss
@jaremelz
There were more interesting Google results.
@jaremelz That is a very cool pic in the cat house... What is he so intent on?
@Kidsandliz He's both fascinated by and afraid of the sounds from outside my room. He's stuck in there as I begin the very slow introduction to Partycat.
@Kidsandliz @hallmike @jaremelz
Congratulations on taking in a kitty!
Looks beautiful.
@dashcloud thanks. He's really sweet and gentle.
Awwwwwwww! Jealous!
@cinoclav He's eerily similar to my Zuzu. And I'm one happy woman.
Happy that @jaremelz is happy ;) Congrats on the new furball!
@duodec thanks!
While I don't have any all black ones I do have sweet kitties. Glad this one thinks you are his person. Also the other cat may have made it very clear he couldn't claim your husband. LOL Mine stick to a pecking order with respect to who claims me when, and where they sleep on my bed.
@Kidsandliz Oh, Partycat will straight up murder him if he gets too up in my husband's business
Jax.
@MsELizardBeth Someone knows they're beautiful.
@jaremelz he's bad about getting on the car in the dark before i get out and batting at me from the darkness when i open my door. Terrifying the first time!
"pet me, woman"
@MsELizardBeth Wow, gorgeous! Yes, pets must be given.
I think your house is now protected from evil hipster karma.
@f00l This house is clean. (But not for long)
Nice pussy.
@Pavlov Probably not the way you imagined you'd get to say that to @jaremelz huh?
Bad dog.
@MrsPavlov
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@Pavlov @MrsPavlov
@MrsPavlov @Pavlov
Well, this is awkward.
What? I was just trying so see my pussy.
He's gorgeous! I'm glad he found his human and you found a new baby. I have too many dogs at the moment to have a cat but I always used to have them. I had several black cats but one,Kitkat was scared of anyone but me. My tortishell Jonesy only like me, except when she was pregnant then she loved everyone. She was really funny. One time I had my boyfriend over and he was lying on the bed. Jonesy peed on him. I've never had a cat do that before. I had to leave the room because he was getting mad that I was laughing so hard. Turned out she knew what she was doing, he turned out to be an ass. After she had her kittens, I couldn't find them until one day it was raining really hard. She came out from under the house and jumped up on a trash can. I was curious about what she was doing so I walk over. She preceded to drop something in my hand..for a sec I thought it was a mouse..eek..but it was her kitten, either she just had one or it was the only one to survive because we couldn't find any more. I guess rain was getting into wherever she had the baby. It just warmed my heart that she trusted me with her baby and knew I would help her. What was funny, I bring the kitten (who gre up to be Kitkat) to my room, get it all set up and then went about my day. My roommate comes home, goes in her closet and screams bloody murder, thought there was a mouse..it was just the kitten. No matter how many times I moved the kitten back to my room, she brought it back to Vickey's closet. I guess I could save her kitten but not raise it..lol. I'm rambling I know, but your post made me think about all my kitties and the wonderful memories they've given me. I know Dumbledore is going to give you years and years of love and fun and memories!
@mehbee Rambling is nice when it's about our furry friends. And that's sweet she trusted you to help her. I'm currently happy as can be. He decided he wanted to sleep at my feet tonight. Big step!
@jaremelz That's wonderful!
what a floof
@Lotsofgoats Super floof. And he's now sleeping next to me.
Adorbs!
Also, black cats are lucky. I have a catshirt that says so.
http://shirt.woot.com/offers/the-new-good-luck
@narfcake See, I've got good reason to rock one now. At some point I'm hoping to get a pic of him next to PussPuss, our disturbingly ugly fake black cat that's meant to be a Halloween decoration but has never been put away. In six years. Also, I've always had a black cat on my bedroom door.
Congratulations on your new family member. Once he gets comfortable in his new digs I am sure he will go into the mode my kitten is in ( she is 6 months now --My how they grow fast) It's called play and play and play and play and play and play and play and play and play and play.
Everything is game. We are trying to train. But the lessons to not eat the plant using a squirt bottle are not going well. She thinks it's another game !
PS yes there are lots of snuggles in there too. Since she was bottle fed she is very people oriented. When she stops playing she is happy to snuggle and be nice to all. But mostly she wants to play( in case I haven't made that clear enough;-) She has a big poofy tail like your guy. The rest of her hasn't decided how poofy to be yet. Her tail is black but she has white too.
Enjoy this stage !! They grow up so fast.
@ceagee
If I understand you correctly, you should do something about your cat since she doesn't like to play.
@ceagee We were told he's very intelligent and loves to play. Right now he's still getting used to the different sounds and knowing there's a different cat out there. They were kept shut up in a room because the previous owner had her dogs that she thought would hurt them. Eight months he's been in that room.
8 months?! Ugh. :(
You're a great mommy, @jaremelz.
(I'm still not ready to adopt again yet, but I do know I will.)
@narfcake I didn't think I was ready, honestly. I didn't even think about adopting again. But it seems this guy chose me. He's still really scared of everything, and won't come close to leaving my room. But there's a great deal of curiosity, so I have hope. And he's starting to turn to us for comfort already, which is huge.
@jaremelz I had scaredy cat (my neighbors abandoned their three and I took them in after they had been on their own about a month- actually they ran into my house when a feral was chasing them) who took about 3 weeks to decide that he wanted to venture beyond under the bed. He now runs all over and is a great cat - smart, affectionate, sensitive, seeks attention and purrs his little heart out, but hides if anyone comes over. Two of those 3 have found homes, he is still waiting. Anyway you are much further along with your baby than I was with this sweetie on day 2 (or even week 2) so that is really promising.
@jaremelz your wrote: " They were kept shut up in a room..." They ? typo or was there another one too ? Curious minds want to know :)
@ceagee There was indeed another. I wished we could take her, but the old cat couldn't take it. She'd found someone who wanted her though, thankfully.
@jaremelz @narfcake: I'm not sure after losing a beloved furred family member ( especially one that has been with you a long time) one ever feels fully ready to adopt again. The Cat Commission ( and/or Dog Commission, etc) has surveillance systems and when they decide you are ready they put a little ad up in their newsletter that says : good home available yada yada {some specific details about you}. It gets answered rather quickly-- sometimes in some devious ways that make you think it was your idea. A trip to the shelter is arranged or a matchmaker or some sort. Or sometimes they just show up at the door.
They have never quite fixed me up with what I thought I wanted ( age, breed, etc..) , but somehow they send someone better than I could of imagined. I'm at 3 now and hoping they decide not to put out any more ads on my behalf.
(Although I'm always open to being a temporary way station if need arises.)
Someday they'll put an ad out for you @narfcake , just like they recently did for @jaremelz.
best-
@jaremelz Glad to hear she is in a good home too. That's another adjustment -- to not have your playmate around. But often they will bond more to you w/o the other cat there. IOW-- you are now the other cat in his life
@ceagee It's late and I'm sappy as hell, but I love what you wrote about the commission. It's dead on.
I am hoping he can make the adjustment. Right now, it's just a great deal of patience. He's never left a small room, never been away from her, and never really felt he had a person. Now he's got 3 very eager to be that. And another who is along for the ride (husband).
He seems so scared but so desperate for love at the same time. Seeing him, I realize how ready I am to love him. Yes, he's so much like my Zuzu it's ridiculous and that helps bridge the gap. But I'm ready and I hope he is too.
@ceagee That's exactly right. I'm sharing it on my FB page, too. Thanks for the words.
He's beautiful! Congratulations on the new family member and thanks for taking him in and getting him out of a bad (for him) situation. We're visiting a shelter today in hopes of bringing a new family member home, too.
@PurplePawprints He's currently miserable from fleas, and it's really making it hard for his personality to show through. But then there are these flashes of adorable cat. He likes to put a single paw on you or lay his head on you. And he loves phones.
Good luck today! I hope you find a new friend who could use a break.
@jaremelz I love it when they sit there with a paw on you... I have several that do that. As far as the fleas there is a med (pill) you can give them that kills all the fleas on them, then use advantage (or whatever - around here frontline doesn't seem to work). I had a baby kitten I rescued once who had twice her weight in fleas on her. I got her head wet first then held her submerged except her head in a bowl of water (head wet first kept most of the fleas from moving to her head to escape drowning). Don't know if you can do that with this cat or whether you'd be mauled to death and then feared. The sink water was pink. Poor baby. Watch for tapeworm since they get that from fleas.
Hooray for black cats, here are my two dummies:
@The_Baron Those are some nice looking dummies you've got there. Tub cat looks like a whole lot of crazy.
@jaremelz That is Eustus, he is a typical crazy cat, but completely uncoordinated.
That is how he sleeps
or like this
Strange cat.
Marcus, the first one, is the supervisor. He will make sure you are doing everything correct.
@The_Baron Hahaha, that's the strangest sleeping position I've seen from a cat. And I thought the way Partycat sleeps sometimes is odd (face down on a pillow, the first time I saw it, I thought he was dead)
@jaremelz yeah, he is super weird. Sleeps like a dog and tries to get in the bath water.
@The_Baron Here's one crappy picture of him doing it. I can't find my favorite.
I'd post an appropriate image, but it's just so difficult to find cat pictures on the Internet. Congratulations!
Beautiful cats everyone! But my husband is allergic. Boo!
@sammydog01 Some are hypoallergenic, though not 100%.
https://www.petfinder.com/cats/living-with-your-cat/cats-for-allergy-sufferers/
@sammydog01 So am I. Allergy injections every 2-3 weeks, Nasacort, fexofenadine, and montelukast. Room air filters with HEPA filters. And 3 cats. They aren't allowed to sleep with me, though.
@OldCatLady You are one dedicated cat owner. My husband and son have the wheezing/can't breathe variety so I don't risk it. My son winds up using an inhaler at friends houses if they have cats, so I have to check first.
@narfcake I remember a TV series with Tea Leoni many years ago when she ordered a non-allergenic cat from a crazy cat lady. It turned out to be bald and very creepy. We're OK with dogs, so dogs it is.
@OldCatLady I'm so glad I'm not the only crazy person! I have lots of dogs that are nice enough to try to kill me with their dander! I take all kinds of sinus meds because I need my babies more than I need to breathe.
@sammydog01 Rachel on Friends got one of those also.. I think it used to be real mean to her. It was pretty funny.
@mehbee I have inhalers also, and do the usual anti-allergen measures: hot water washes for linens, no carpet, Roomba with HEPA, etc. Smooth surfaces are easiest to clean, so leather furniture, laminate floors.
Is it bluetooth enabled?
@cpierce Unfortunately no, just Blackfloof
Love! So stoked for you @jaremelz!
Here's my two floofs. Blue and Swiper.
@hollboll
@hollboll Awww, they are so pretty! The one on the left looks a lot like Dumbledore.
@hollboll Someone watched too much Nick Jr, right? We had a cat named Nellie when I was a kid that looked just like Blue. So pretty!
@jaremelz that's Blue! She's the best. Swiper is cool and all but Blue is definitely my cat.
@sammydog, lol or I babysat a lot and couldn't come up with a good name when we got them.
@hollboll @sammydog
Or... the two go hand in hand.
@hollboll Everyone has a favorite child, even if they don't admit it.
@FroodyFrog for that sign
@Kidsandliz
Don't get me wrong, I like cats.
And in my defense, i may have believed that the sign should have read "deep fried tacos"
@FroodyFrog Because Chinese restaurants typically serve tacos?
I know it's a joke, but it wasn't a funny one and was in horrible taste. So let's move on, 'k?
@narfcake @kidsandliz
Yay! What a beautiful, handsome kitty!
What a sweet looking little man! Out of the handful of cats I have owned, my black kitty was the sweetest by far. Enjoy your new roommate! I'm jealous!
What a beautiful floof! Congrats!
@Thumperchick Thanks. Hopefully he relaxes a bit soon. Our home is so much quieter than hers that it seems to be throwing him off.
@jaremelz
It's sad that for 80% of his life he spent it in a room due to dogs, hopefully soon enough he'll open up.
@FroodyFrog I agree. He's so sweet and calm and good. If I'm in with him, he comes up and sleeps next to me. If i need to leave, he goes nuts trying to get into the closet to hide.
We are almost positive he's part Maine Coon, just like my Zuzu was. He's got all the markings, including size.
@jeremelz now all ya need is named Snape, so they can be best friends. :) (and not reenact any of the scenes... at all...)
@sohmageek At all...like, ever. Hehe.
@sohmageek This one needs a smaller sized dog suit LOL
Beautiful kitty! And Dumbledore is perfect for an oversized cat, as it is the Cornish name for "bumblebee" (dumble = large/slow, dore = humming) which J. R. R. Tolkien used in his poem Errantry:
"He battled with the Dumbledors,
the Hummerhorns, and Honeybees, ..."
@rockblossom He is a large purr machine, so yay!
