@lichme Congrats, but unfortunately even coffee will hardly help at times with a newborn. You'll either get lucky and have a kid that sleeps for a few solid weeks/months, but then is awake a lot after that. Or, the baby will hardly sleep from day 1. Either way at some point you will find yourself awake most of the night, lol. Enjoy it though.
@studerc I lucked out I think. At 6 weeks that kid started sleeping for 12hrs a night, and she's been doing that for 11+ months now. It's pretty badass, but every time the "should we have another one?" topic comes up we both shy towards "no...we'll get fucking annihilated the next go round...better stick with just the one."
@Rumple Right now, that might actually be the only option. We're staying with inlaws while we have a house built, and the baby will be here before the house is, so it's kinda cramped.
I'm a big fan of Starbuck's Vias for emergency use. It's ok coffee, and you save time on both the set up and clean up sides. The clean up especially comes in handy in situations like yours, or visiting the in laws, or RVing, or the like.
Last thing you want to look at after getting up with a kid at 3 a.m. is a filter basket full of grounds, dirty pot, or various lids that need rinsed.
@acer I hear ya, man. We thought the same thing after our first but then after 4yrs said, "Aw, what the hell, 2 would be ok." 10 mos later, our twin girls arrived. Fast forward 5 yrs & one night and Surprise! TWIN BOYS!! (For those keeping score that's "2 1/2 sets of twins" eating all my food now). Moral of the story, hang on to, "One & done" for as long as she'll let you!
*(Disclaimer-My kids are awesome and are the greatest gifts I've ever received!)
@acer Good headwork. Our first one was so great that we decided to do it again. Got whammied with twins. Talk about sleep deprivation!!! That's when we became hooked on the java juice. Life has never been the same since.
@lichme With a baby in 3 months you already have something that will keep you awake, you want to invest in a nice pillow that you can fall a sleep instantly on. My first child woke wanting to eat every two hours. So that wasn't two hours of sleep it was wake up, eat for 1/2 hour sleep for 1 1/2 hours and up again. It took him almost a year before he would only get up once a night to eat. 18-20 months before he slept through the night. Second kids is 11 weeks old now and is already at close to 6-7 hours of sleep at night. To be fair though the first child was 8 weeks early, so he only had a tiny little stomach.
@acer "fucking annihilated" that phrase made me so proud to be part of a community in which people use phrases such as: "fucking annihilatedfucking annihilated." Love it.
@JonT I actually do have that issue was well. We bought a bunch of stuff for the nursery (crib, dresser etc) but can't set it up because there is no room for it. I think we'll have to use a pack and play temporarily for the baby to sleep in. On a side note, you are awesome for sending me that, however I noticed it's being shipped to my old address (pre-move). Is there any way to fix that? I just went and updated my address to the current one if you need it.
Meh... No speaker docks and nothing fun... Yes I love my espresso like any other self respecting Geek... but still I already have a maker, and rarely use it...
@connorbush I thought this was a google search gone wrong, but it appears that the people famous for making a "frisbee ring that you could throw incredibly far" when I was a kid are not making a decent coffee kit (and a horrible website)?
@connorbush Aeropress is great but it doesn't make espresso, even though Amazon calls it a 'coffee and espresso maker'. They are for making two different kinds of coffee, so it depends what you like.
@hoborg Yes true but technically this machine does not make true espresso either. This is a steam espresso pot, it is more like a fool proof Moka pot (yes they can be tricky) then anything. Nothing wrong with that I have a Moka pot and I have an aeropress and I use both, but if I was to invest counter space for an espresso machine it would be a 15 bar one.
@dave I currently have 4 methods. to make coffee. A french press, drip maker, and two keurigs. One for the work desk and one for home. I do miss espresso though.
@metageist I love me some cold brew!!! I need giant tea bags to put coffee into a sun-tea jar. Where does one find giant cold-brew sized 'loose leaf' tea bags?
@connorbush For disposable, T-sac's #4 is referred to as 12 cup size. I use reusable cotton teabags for my individual servings of hot tea, and personally would probably try using a cotton cheese-making bag or nut milk bag.
@TBoneZeOriginal okay a couple things, Im pointing out that this machine is unlikely to produce shots that pass the quality of gas station coffee. Pretty much every gas station had a machine that you push a button and it spits out an espress of some sort. You probably don't live in the PNW, and definitally don't live in spokane, you can walk two feet without hitting a coffee stand (and those are not starbucks).
a full 30% of the reviews are one star, dwelling on the facts that the frother doesn't work, doesn't heat the milk, the unit takes too long to warm up, that the machine will, in various ways, spontaneously cease to function, and at least three separate reviews SPONTANEOUSLY FUCKING EXPLODE and spray shards of glass everywhere.
@boygenius1991 Where were you when I bought a bunch of these to sell to our unsuspecting clientele? I'll fill you in on a few of our secrets: 1. We always ignore reviews, especially when 10 reviewers had no hope in trying to work an electrical device involving pressure levels above 1 Atm. 2. We ignore the fact that the previous model (ECM160) was the 2nd best selling steam espresso maker on the "Big A" over the last decade or so. 3. We would never even think about testing one or two of these, or any other item you will ever see on our site before unleashing it on our customers, because quite frankly, we love hearing stories from them in great detail exactly how our products "blew up their (inset here: house, car, cat, spouse, etc)" It makes us laugh heartily. Really. More than just a chuckle. 4. When it does SPONTANEOUSLY FUCKING EXPLODES, you better hope to God that it does within 364.5 days of your purchase date, because so very many refurbished/remanufactured products that have a manufacturer's 1 Year warranty are most likely total pieces of shit anyway and not worth buying at any price. Thanks for your input, and especially for educating me that I should avoid buying stuff that doesn't work and explodes. (@mehcus, please cancel my order for the one i bought for my son for a house-warming gift). I can do much better. And I will.
Those are pretty damning reviews. This can be bought for $30ish at retail stores, making it not too much cheaper for something that night explode. I'll pass, which is a bummer cause I was looking for an espresso machine for the office.
@HELLOALICE Doesn't seem like a problem: get it for the office, just don't let anyone know you did it. Bonus if it explodes when someone you don't care for is standing nearby.
I got the Capresso machine that was listed awhile back, and I love that thing. Looking at the difference in the Amazon reviews, for the Capresso I see a pretty normal distribution, kind of a lopsided U with the high side being on the five-star end -- five-star reviews outnumber one-stars almost 3:1 . This Mr. Coffee's distribution is lopsided the other way, though, with one-stars actually outnumbering fives. Definite red flag.
Pass on it, guys. You really have to lay down a minimum of about $300 to get a home espresso maker that can get up the boiler pressure and temperature to make actual espresso (though a thousand is better, if you can spare the time to buy it between watching polo matches from your gold throne). Flimsy little machines like this just spit out bitter tasting coffee. Not even worth it as a milk steamer... again, not enough pressure.
@Rosstafari actually the DeLongi EC155 (and it's derivatives like the EC220 and the like) do a decent espresso for $100 or less (the steam on those units is a bit watery however, what are you gonna do it's a single tank).
Last week when you sold the Krupp coffee pot you eluded to the fact that you would be selling this this week. Whoever wrote the article with it also used the words, "crappy" when referring to Mr. Coffee products. I know nothing about this espresso maker however I do own a Mr. Coffee coffee maker and love it. I also heard on I believe on NPR that the cheap ass Mr. Coffee beat out all other coffee makers in a Consumer Reports test.
@dino2269 Looking on the CR website, there are to Mr Coffee models that got a "Recommended" rating for drip coffee with "Excellent" brew performance, but those are $100-$150 models. I can't prove it, but I have reason to believe it is in the June 2015 issue.
What's up with the pictures on meh no longer working? It's been a few days now, and the sale as well as meh faces have stopped loading (and I tried on Chrome and IE11).
I got my wife one of these. We like it for the price. Its awesome!... if you know how to use it. Read the instructions and be very careful with the pressure cap. The steam will burn you and if you take it off under pressure hot water and steam will explode out onto everything and everyone. Here are a few tips to get the most out of it: 1) pack the coffee grounds into the filter tightly, otherwise the water will tunnel through and leave you with weak coffee instead of espresso. 2) Make sure you have the right container for the milk steamer. You need a container deep enough to submerge the steamer head and keep the milk from bubbling over the top. DO NOT use your coffee mug for this. 3) Give it time to heat up. Not long, just a few minutes. Everything will taste and work better. 4) If you let it run out of water and try to use the steamer the steamer nozzle may actually suck up the milk which is a bitch to clean out. These are all easy to do and stated in the instructions. I hate following instructions too but in this case they would have prevented 60-70% of the bad reviews.
Hope that helps some of you on the fence or worried about reviews.
I am tempted... It would certainly be more useful than more knives and speaker docks. Based on my experiences in IT, I think most of the 1-star reviews are from people who either didn't RTFM or didn't follow the instructions correctly. I know it is not a true espresso machine like at SBUX, but what do you want for a XX-note?
Boom! Just got mine in, nothing is obviously broken, but I haven't had a chance to see if anything works, either. I might need to buy some coffee and a grinder, too...
Finally got around to using this. RTFMd, set it up easy enough. I like mine a bit stronger than the default measurements, so I'm going to play around with the balance of coffee/water a bit. But seems to work easy enough, and for twenty bucks, it beats the super fine mesh tea strainer I was using to make coffee before. (I tossed my old coffee maker in a move, then wasn't drinking enough of the stuff to warrant getting a new one. But now I am, again, oops.)

Nope, i'll pass on your left over coffee particles all up in my "drank".
With a new baby due in 3 months, I think investing in more things to stay awake is a good idea. If only there was somewhere to put it
@lichme Congratulations!
@lichme bedside table?
@lichme Congrats, but unfortunately even coffee will hardly help at times with a newborn. @lichme I read this as you not knowing where to put the baby but I'm sure you'll figure that out. Congrats!!!
@lichme ...and wealthy-wailing-beaver coming your way, check https://meh.com/orders. Hope you find a spot for it, congrats again!
@JonT I actually do have that issue was well. We bought a bunch of stuff for the nursery (crib, dresser etc) but can't set it up because there is no room for it. @JonT Just in case it couldn't be modified, I cancelled the order you put in. I didn't want it shipping to the wrong place.
@lichme You got it! Fixed with the new address! knitted-bendy-tin
@JonT Did I mention that you are awesome?
@JonT the only more appropriate order number for a baby gift would have been poor-wailing-beaver
Meh... No speaker docks and nothing fun... Yes I love my espresso like any other self respecting Geek... but still I already have a maker, and rarely use it...
QUICKLY. Someone decide if I need this or aero press.
@connorbush aeropress. takes up zero counter space.
@connorbush aeropress, or cold brew!
@connorbush aeropress or handpresso would have been nice. Mr. Coffee even at that price is just meh!
@connorbush Aero Press has more stars on Amazon...
@connorbush Neither! Just a little pinch between the cheek and gum is the best way to get your caffeine!
@connorbush Aero Press, if you go for an espresso machine get a 15 bar pump one.
@connorbush aeropress for sure!
@connorbush I thought this was a google search gone wrong, but it appears that the people famous for making a "frisbee ring that you could throw incredibly far" when I was a kid are not making a decent coffee kit (and a horrible website)?
@yakkoTDI Gross but true (which is not to be confused with Lifetime's upcoming Miley Cyrus bio-flick of the same name).
@connorbush Wait, we're only supposed to have one method to make coffee? Oops.
@connorbush AeroPress or a French press. If you want to up your game from there, don't buy a cheap espresso machine -- buy a good coffee grinder.
It gives you wings!
o gawd helz naw
A $20 espresso maker....might as well just go to the gas station and get your coffee.
@badmnky If you could point me in the direction of a gas station that sells espresso, please do so.
@TBoneZeOriginal okay a couple things, Im pointing out that this machine is unlikely to produce shots that pass the quality of gas station coffee. @boygenius1991 I think you might have lost your VMP membership.
I think Jdub needs to switch to decaff.
@Jdub I have this. I love it. It works well if you know how to use. Job well done.
Have not bought anything in awhile......vmp in danger of being cancelled.....not sure where all this stuff is coming from....
@somf69 I have to agree, this is getting ridiculous

Based on reviews this seems like the worst espresso maker in the world.
@elpepe If you read the reviews, it's mostly morons who are incapable of reading the instructions.
does it come with the intro-venous attachment?

@mick what did coffee ever do to you?
@mick coffee's relationship with connorbush www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJs_L7yq5qE
@connorbush @troy I may be going out on a limb here, but I think @mick 's relationship with coffee is this
@mehdaf Maybe, I don't know, I have not drank anything with caffeine in over 30 years. Gives me the shakes somthin awful.
