@phendrick Back in the early 80’s, I was in a Walgreen’s late one night, right before Christmas. I turned the corner and ran into this man. I looked up, and looked up, and looked up, and was standing literally toe to toe with Joe Green. I almost fainted. lol He was looking down at me and had this huge grin on his face, and said, ‘Excuse me’. And all I could do was stammer. lol
He was the nicest guy. Said he was there looking for some Christmas decorations and thought he wouldn’t be noticed. We chatted a bit, and wished each other a Merry Christmas and went on our way. I will never forget what a wall of a man he was, but how gentle and nice he was. Great guy!
@jnicholson0619 Alas, the commercial is about the most memorable thing about Kmart these days. There’s only three stores remaining in the continental US.
(operatic) “I’ve brought more Rice Krispies!”
(spoken, aside) *My mother-in-law."
(operatic)“Enough to last at least three months! That’s how long I’ll be here.”
@earlyre@sammydog01 Stand-up comedian Gary Muledeer did a hilarious spoof of that commercial in his act (I think it was part of an HBO special, but I couldn’t locate any footage or even mention of it ; McD probably had something to do with that).
I don’t remember much of it, it was decades ago, but it ended with “… on a seedy-ass bun”.
That’s what has stuck in my memory
@GrandmaLyn Sure. Point taken. But not with the same fervor, grandeur, and delivery. It was really a hit in my office. And we have a good friend Mike;)
@somf69
They actually did this last Christmas. About 1 in 3 times it was on it started then broke to a jazz theme with father/daughter making thumbprint cookies with kisses. I was not amused because every time I heard the commercial I turn to watch… and the new one just doesn’t cut it.
There were a lot of unhappy posts to youtube and apparently Hershey caught a lot of complaints too.
(This is one segment of a collection so it will keep playing)

@Tadlem43 Nice story; thanks for relating.
For those that are a little younger,
How he got to be “Mean Joe”:
https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/joe-greene-turns-75-six-amazing-facts-about-the-steelers-greatest-player-of-all-time/
Wikipedia tells it slightly differently.
I was in Dallas at that time (at least my parents were, I was away at college) but never got to see him play there.
BTW, I realize I misspelled his name earlier. (Ends in “E”.)
The hersheys kiss commercial that still plays every year!
@mc2d2000 Came here to say this. That little Kiss going “whew” at the end never gets old.
“Mikey likes it!”
@Salanth Oh, yes - true greatness!
/youtube Apple 1984
Bud…weis…errr
@Knightp The Christmas horse ones, for sure.
@Knightp @Tadlem43 I think that’s the frogs one, isn’t it?
@Knightp @Kyeh lol I was thinking of the Clydesdales, but that one’s good, too. I had forgotten about that one.
@Tadlem43 Yeah, I think @Knightp meant the frogs - that’s what they say, “Bud Weis Errr”!
/youtube I can’t believe I ate the whole thing

@2many2no I love that Colon Blow ad!!
Trunk Monkeys
@spacemart That would be a classic, if ever shown on regular TV.
@spacemart
That one was hilarious
I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.

That ad has lived rent-free in my head since I first saw it.
(much of that is because of the context, I suppose)
@xobzoo Groovy!
My most memorable commercial:
Since we’re on the subject, here’s my favorite commercial of all time:
“Don’t squeeze the Charmin”
That Kmart commercial, “I just shipped MY BED!” Or their “Big Gas Savings” one.
@jnicholson0619 Alas, the commercial is about the most memorable thing about Kmart these days. There’s only three stores remaining in the continental US.
@narfcake oh crazy, i didnt think there was any left anymore.
Who squeezed the Charmin?
Don’t squeeze the Charmin!
@milstarr fun fact… the young stock boy in one of those commercials…a young Adam Savage.
The handbell Hershey Kisses Christmas ad. Fourteen seconds of delight.
@TheFaceOfBoe That one is great! It always reminds me of the Coca-Cola “I want to buy the world a Coke” ad.
“Mama mia! Atsa spicy meatball!”

From Oz:
@werehatrack never saw this one but it’s great!
@werehatrack “Made from beer.”
Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.
I can’t remember what day it is but know that by heart.
@sammydog01 that would be a Big Mac

@earlyre @sammydog01 Found it!
He’s the last act of the Freddie Prinze & Friends special, from I think, around '75 or '76.
This part of his routine starts just after about the 1:03:50 mark.
[You’ll never recite the jingle the same, again, I’m afraid.]
The whole special is great. I especially found the first part with Tim Thomerson to be outrageously side-splitting.

Lots of quality options for this conversation. But when ad becomes vernacular, it’s legendary.
@JWhirly People didn’t say ‘hump day’ before this commercial? Genuinely asking.
@GrandmaLyn Sure. Point taken. But not with the same fervor, grandeur, and delivery. It was really a hit in my office. And we have a good friend Mike;)
Though a lot of people may not remember this, theTrix/ Got Milk commercial always stays in my Top 3. Brilliant!
I have to say, with today’s inflation, this would be impossible:
This whole campaign was pretty great, too.
The Hershey company has not changed the “wish you a Merry Christmas” Bells in over 20 years
@somf69

not so much memorable, as unable to forget it…Fuckin Spectrum shoe horns it in to almost EVERY commercial break…
{VMod edit: fixed as requested.}
If you live in the DC area you know at Eastern Motors your job’s your credit.
@jweber1145 Older folks in SoCal will remember Cal Worthington and his “dog” Spot.
@jweber1145 @narfcake For a while, he had a dealership here in Houston as well.
