@RiotDemon Careful what you wish for. The Morningsave power bank I ordered was bricked. They sent me another 20% coupon to use for the one I wasted, but tonight it said expired. I had to use the twentyoff code instead. I already emailed them about it.
These don’t required skill or even luck to buy. Set your expectations according. In for a $30 one. Supposed to be worth $120 morningsave prices, but those are set too high, anyway. Maybe get $50 worth of stuff I don’t need.
One $30 box for $24 for me as well… Went with the female box but wasn’t sure if that was the right option as so very few items sold on MS are particularly male-centric. Thinking I’ll get more crappy handbags and make-up kits, and fewer crappy murses and possibly fewer electronics – particularly those in macho black and silver or olive green vs. the ones in pastels or hot pink…
I did a “large” box last time. I was sufficiently pleased with the contents. I think I was the only one, but I was not disappointed. It wasn’t exactly a windfall, but I got more than my money’s worth. Plus the thrill of the mystery.
All the “female” ones were sold out for the $30 and $20 boxes, so now Morningsave has forced me to choose some sort of heteronormative “male” box…I wonder if they will finally get rid of all these awesome shower curtains from last year?
Thank you. I never bother with morning save but I went over and got 1 10 dollar female and one 30 dollar Male box. Figure it would be fun. Nothing they sell is too gender specific Male so I should be able to use it or give it away in the next meh exchange after @kidsandliz recovers.
@ruouttaurmind No, the one I bought was $18+. I have no idea what I did, First thought maybe it was crap like, then it asked me to pick a color. By then I was too deep into it to turn around. So I just jumped off the cliff.
@mfladd I guess I should have added the disclaimer “don’t click unless you really want to know and spoil the mystery”. Sry.
That does appear to be it. I cancelled because I already have two really good (REDACTED FOR ANYONE ELSE SAVORING THE MYSTERY) and had no use for this one. Plus, checking C3, the pricing has been below the Woot point several times.
Now the forty bucks I just spent on a refurbished something… time to unravel that mystery while I can still cancel. I’m guessing it’s one of the hundreds of refurbished phones blowing through Woot at any given moment.
Yup, they make a strong case for Kindle of some kind. I’ll go ahead and stand by my order, and hope it’s not an old Paperwhite. If it is, I’ll take my lumps and dump it off on eBay for whatever loss I have to take, and call that “stupid tax” for letting @mfladd goad me into making poor choices.
Yeah, find some schmuck to buy your old Kindle. That kinda hurts…
Noooo! It’s not like that. I just didn’t have any use for it! If you are unhappy with it, I would be quite pleased to give you back your money. NP. I do not want you feeling like I dumped my junk on you.
@ruouttaurmind I was just making a joke, a very bad joke. I was quite happy with it. I did, however, give it to a friend of mine, after I bought my Oasis. She is thrilled with your Kindle and I never see her without it.
Thank you for selling it to me and not that mean ol’ @sammydog01.
@Barney@mfladd@ruouttaurmind I saw the last one and ordered it- sounded like a Paperwhite. Then I remembered I wasn’t going to buy another used one. Fortunately they let me cancel. My bet is a 2013 Paperwhite- if you’re lucky 2015. Don’t hold your breath for a Voyage. I have a bunch of older Kindles around and they usually will give you 25% off a new one with a trade-in. Next time they’re $100 I’m doing it.
@Barney My mother asked me and my brother to do Ancestry testing. Turns out I’m not from the same part of the world as the rest of the family. But, oh wait, I got a note that they changed their algorythms. Now I’m right in between my parents. Hmmmm. I think they cheat.
@Barney@sammydog01 I’ve been very intrigued by the testing ever since it was commercialized. I would be curious to see the origin of my ancestry, but I foresee a couple pitfalls.
First, we (Earth) has been a global village for long enough I’m not sure I have much confidence in the conclusions drawn from these commercial DNA labs. I do not believe there has been sufficient archaeological specimen analysis to make a strong, reliable reference base.
Second… as @sammydog01 mentioned, the way the results are interpreted seem to be as much an art as a science.
@ruouttaurmind@sammydog01 My uncle did some genealogical research of my dad’s side of the family and I have recently found out some more about Mom’s side of the family (It took me quite a while to get over the fact that I’m 1/4 Texan. At least that won’t show up in my testing).
I do have quite a bit of Comanche (not Cherokee) in me, so I’ll see if my testing shows that to be true. But I’m not planning on making any presidential bids at this time. Maybe later – after the test results.
I went to Customer Service and plead my case that an additional $7 off really wasn’t enough to make this 7 year old Paperwhite an OMG deal. (In case you are wondering I did this in a very nice way. Yeah, I know I’ve been crabby lately, sorry.)
They gave me a $10 coupon in addition to the $7 off.
@Barney But you’re keeping it? As someone pointed out they’re giving 25% off a brand spanking new kindle with a trade-in plus a few bucks of credit. That takes the new waterproof one down to a reasonable price when it’s on sale. Hello, bathtub!
@Barney A 2012 Paperwhite? Even after a $7 discount that’s the same price they’re selling them for even now. How is that a OMG deal? That’s just a hair away from outright fraud! When will I learn to skip the Woot mystery ANYTHING? EVERY mystery whatever I’ve ever ordered has been a scam. SMH.
@sammydog01 After the $7 refund it was a dollar under the price woot was concurrently selling the scratch and dent ones. Essentially the same price, better condition, but no compensation for it being a mystery purchase. IF a person knew what they were buying then it might be considered a “deal” at the same price as scratch and dent models. As an OMG blind purchase that is advertised as something “mad expensive made really cheap” it is a fail even at the new price.
@medz@sammydog01 This morning I was talking to a friend about this OMG mess, and she said that she would buy the Kindle from me for the $33 price and cover my tax, too. She liked the idea that it was a refurb and not scratch and dent. (I’ve never claimed that all my friends are sane.)
So with my $10 coupon, I’m coming out ahead. However, I’m not going to buy another OMG deal again. Yep, I’ve learned my lesson.
@Barney After reading these complaints, it dawned on me that woot cs never got back to me about my own complaint with the Cards Against Humanity debacle. The last email I got from them was that they were sending it to a ‘specialist’ and I’d hear back within two business days. That was on January 3rd. I just emailed them again. I’m hoping enough people here have realized at this point you should never, ever buy the mystery items on woot.
@Barney@cinoclav Boy am I ever. I believe the official response for the CAH packs was “Sorry for the confusion, but this was the intended outcome.” They admitted the item wasn’t the best choice, but didn’t budge on the price it was sold for. Tough luck.
I’m pretty sure $33 is below the scratch and dent price by a bit and these are refurbs.
Every S&D item I’ve ordered from Woot turned out to be either a refurb, or in the same condition as the refurbs I received. Either way… 90 day Woot warranty, so there’s no advantage to one over the other.
I keep trying to get beyond all the crap Woot has pulled in the past and all that accomplished is giving them more opportunities to pull crap.
Worse still, their solutions are never consistent. @Barney got $7 refund and a $10 coupon. It’s entirely possible @cinoclav gets nothing and maybe not even the option to RFR.
Of course I’m still pissed over the School Crate debacle, and that’s been five years ago.
@Barney@cinoclav@ruouttaurmind The refund or return is for everyone- it’s on their website. The scratch and dent kindles I bought were labeled Amazon Unacceptable- too crappy for Amazon to sell and deserving of the label. They are not comparable to refurbs.
OMG items have been modest discounts over Woot prices. If that doesn’t appeal to you don’t buy them. I’m not sure why anyone would.
@sammydog01 I get 20% offers in my email from various companies all the time. I guess if you think 17.5% off a normal woot price is “really cheap”, then that’s great for you.
Edit: I’m not sure how much weight your opinion carries. You can’t even find the baby emojis.
This was my first (and last) OMG. I never paid any attention to them before. The only other “special” thing, that I have purchased, was a BoC LE. I kinda liked that, and thought that the OMG would be similar to that with the price markdown.
@sammydog01 Except the OMG items don’t allow a return. And it was not a modest discount, it was not only the same price that I could have bought it elsewhere for, but generally a total ripoff as I could have bought a combination expansion set that included it for a similar price. But this is why I made sure to buy a reasonably inexpensive OMG item for the first (and last) time. I can’t imagine being the suckers who paid $250 or whatever it was this week.
We’re very sorry for the delay and inconvenience! It is unfortunate things turned out this way.
I have passed this information on to one of my associates who specializes in this area, and you should be hearing back from them within two business days.
Thank you for your patience, and we will get back with you as soon as possible.
@sammydog01 The Crategate remedy was also on the website, confirmed by TT and other staffers. The first few who took advantage of the remedy were rewarded with the full benefits as was initially reported. Then Woot changed the offer (twice) and even stooped to ninja editing the item description a month after the sale was over, when dissatisfied buyers began gathering in the square with torches and pitchforks.
For all the fun they can be at times, Woot has also proved many times to be less than forthright in their sales.
@sammydog01 disclaimer: the following is just playful jabbing and all jokes. Not mad at you.
Oh, look at you with your herb-infused tea and college-educated offspring. Ain’t you just soooo fancy. Thank you for permission!
/giphy pinkies up
@Barney@mfladd@ruouttaurmind@sammydog01 I sent a nice email asking to return the item as I didn’t feel it was worthy if being OMG amazing. I received a quick positive reply w the same $10.00 coupon. Yea me!
I took a male $20 box. Because I love mysteries, and the solving of them.* I’m guessing this is just a way to move the horse caca that they couldn’t sell any other way, first on Meh and then on MorningSave. But there’s that optimistic part of me that’s like “Maybe… just maybe, they’ll think it’s hilarious to give me a new MacBook Air” or something. (I can’t disagree: it would be side-splittingly funny) I finally got a Woot bag of crap for the first time in my life last year and it was… excessively crappy. I mean, as advertised, right? The thing is, my wife had gotten one when we first moved in together and it was full of pretty useful stuff. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
*(I will give 1000 Internet Points to anyone who knows what that references because it is obscure with a capital O)
I just got my MorningSave a-a-a-after box,
It was waiting right outsi-i-i-i-de the door,
I didn’t think it would be here 'til tomo-o-o-o-rrow,
Now I’ll escape the darkness,
I’ve got more flashlights than a sto-o-o-ore!
A female Mission Radiantactive warm set (hat, gloves, scarf infused with magical pixie dust that makes it both dry and warm®) (same package and color as in aetris’ reveal pic) This is the set only 1 instead of 2… value of $5. Now would I have ever bought this? What is the value of actually wanted items… VAWI:$0
A Comfee’ Personal Blender (looks to be a magic bullet type mixer). This is the item but it only has one bottle (well it might have more than one I have not opened it). they are going for $19.99 on the zon but meh sold em for $14, so $14 of value if I had ever wanted to buy it VAWI:$0
A bulb head atomic lighter in electric blue with no random initials engraved (new). This is the item so $7 of value… for something I might buy… I mean it’s a plasma lighter… not sure I need one… I have a few of the grill type ones for lighting the grill… wouldn’t want to try that with this one… but still… $7 for something that it is possible I might have bought I guess. VAWI:$7
A Bogui wallet. I did sorta look at those when meh sold them… meh price $5-7 but you did have to buy multiples which is why I didn’t… this one doesn’t have the RFID blocking cards so $5 for something that I likely would have bought if I could have bought just one. VAWI:$12
A tzumi USB Wall Charger with a Nordstrom price sticker of $5… likely sold for a buck or two on meh/morning… I usually only use anker and mfg chargers but … I’ll give you this one meh… $1 VAWI:$13
Palmer cooler tumbler (20 oz) think yeti drink cup clone… no idea if I would have bought one… but I do like keeping beverages cool in the heat… so it is possible if they were priced really well… so $4 VAWI:$17
A dr cool cooling towel… I would pay around $3 for this… and I might buy one at $3… so VAWI:$20
and lastly… a smart stand silicon scoop style… this is the one… would I buy 3 of them to try them out? only if they were really really cheap… like 3 for $5 cheap. But would I buy one for $3… likely… so grand total of value of actually wanted items is:
so not a bad deal I guess. Thanks meh-noring save.
