First, we (Earth) has been a global village for long enough I’m not sure I have much confidence in the conclusions drawn from these commercial DNA labs. I do not believe there has been sufficient archaeological specimen analysis to make a strong, reliable reference base.
Second… as @sammydog01 mentioned, the way the results are interpreted seem to be as much an art as a science.

@sammydog01 After the $7 refund it was a dollar under the price woot was concurrently selling the scratch and dent ones. Essentially the same price, better condition, but no compensation for it being a mystery purchase. IF a person knew what they were buying then it might be considered a “deal” at the same price as scratch and dent models. As an OMG blind purchase that is advertised as something “mad expensive made really cheap” it is a fail even at the new price.
@medz@sammydog01 This morning I was talking to a friend about this OMG mess, and she said that she would buy the Kindle from me for the $33 price and cover my tax, too. She liked the idea that it was a refurb and not scratch and dent. (I’ve never claimed that all my friends are sane.)

@Barney After reading these complaints, it dawned on me that woot cs never got back to me about my own complaint with the Cards Against Humanity debacle. The last email I got from them was that they were sending it to a ‘specialist’ and I’d hear back within two business days. That was on January 3rd. I just emailed them again. I’m hoping enough people here have realized at this point you should never, ever buy the mystery items on woot.

Every S&D item I’ve ordered from Woot turned out to be either a refurb, or in the same condition as the refurbs I received. Either way… 90 day Woot warranty, so there’s no advantage to one over the other.
I keep trying to get beyond all the crap Woot has pulled in the past and all that accomplished is giving them more opportunities to pull crap.
Worse still, their solutions are never consistent. @Barney got $7 refund and a $10 coupon. It’s entirely possible @cinoclav gets nothing and maybe not even the option to RFR.

This was my first (and last) OMG. I never paid any attention to them before. The only other “special” thing, that I have purchased, was a BoC LE. I kinda liked that, and thought that the OMG would be similar to that with the price markdown.
@sammydog01 Except the OMG items don’t allow a return. And it was not a modest discount, it was not only the same price that I could have bought it elsewhere for, but generally a total ripoff as I could have bought a combination expansion set that included it for a similar price. But this is why I made sure to buy a reasonably inexpensive OMG item for the first (and last) time. I can’t imagine being the suckers who paid $250 or whatever it was this week.

@sammydog01 The Crategate remedy was also on the website, confirmed by TT and other staffers. The first few who took advantage of the remedy were rewarded with the full benefits as was initially reported. Then Woot changed the offer (twice) and even stooped to ninja editing the item description a month after the sale was over, when dissatisfied buyers began gathering in the square with torches and pitchforks.
For all the fun they can be at times, Woot has also proved many times to be less than forthright in their sales.

My bet is a 2013 Paperwhite- if you’re lucky 2015. Don’t hold your breath for a Voyage. I have a bunch of older Kindles around and they usually will give you 25% off a new one with a trade-in. Next time they’re $100 I’m doing it.

@Barney @sammydog01 I’ve been very intrigued by the testing ever since it was commercialized. I would be curious to see the origin of my ancestry, but I foresee a couple pitfalls.
First, we (Earth) has been a global village for long enough I’m not sure I have much confidence in the conclusions drawn from these commercial DNA labs. I do not believe there has been sufficient archaeological specimen analysis to make a strong, reliable reference base.
Second… as @sammydog01 mentioned, the way the results are interpreted seem to be as much an art as a science.
All that said… it still might be fun.

@ruouttaurmind @sammydog01 My uncle did some genealogical research of my dad’s side of the family and I have recently found out some more about Mom’s side of the family (It took me quite a while to get over the fact that I’m 1/4 Texan. At least that won’t show up in my testing).
I do have quite a bit of Comanche (not Cherokee) in me, so I’ll see if my testing shows that to be true. But I’m not planning on making any presidential bids at this time. Maybe later – after the test results.

I went to Customer Service and plead my case that an additional $7 off really wasn’t enough to make this 7 year old Paperwhite an OMG deal. (In case you are wondering I did this in a very nice way. Yeah, I know I’ve been crabby lately, sorry.)
They gave me a $10 coupon in addition to the $7 off.

@sammydog01 After the $7 refund it was a dollar under the price woot was concurrently selling the scratch and dent ones. Essentially the same price, better condition, but no compensation for it being a mystery purchase. IF a person knew what they were buying then it might be considered a “deal” at the same price as scratch and dent models. As an OMG blind purchase that is advertised as something “mad expensive made really cheap” it is a fail even at the new price.
@medz @sammydog01 This morning I was talking to a friend about this OMG mess, and she said that she would buy the Kindle from me for the $33 price and cover my tax, too. She liked the idea that it was a refurb and not scratch and dent. (I’ve never claimed that all my friends are sane.)
So with my $10 coupon, I’m coming out ahead. However, I’m not going to buy another OMG deal again. Yep, I’ve learned my lesson.

@Barney After reading these complaints, it dawned on me that woot cs never got back to me about my own complaint with the Cards Against Humanity debacle. The last email I got from them was that they were sending it to a ‘specialist’ and I’d hear back within two business days. That was on January 3rd. I just emailed them again. I’m hoping enough people here have realized at this point you should never, ever buy the mystery items on woot.

Every S&D item I’ve ordered from Woot turned out to be either a refurb, or in the same condition as the refurbs I received. Either way… 90 day Woot warranty, so there’s no advantage to one over the other.
I keep trying to get beyond all the crap Woot has pulled in the past and all that accomplished is giving them more opportunities to pull crap.
Worse still, their solutions are never consistent. @Barney got $7 refund and a $10 coupon. It’s entirely possible @cinoclav gets nothing and maybe not even the option to RFR.
Of course I’m still pissed over the School Crate debacle, and that’s been five years ago.
@Barney @cinoclav @ruouttaurmind The refund or return is for everyone- it’s on their website. The scratch and dent kindles I bought were labeled Amazon Unacceptable- too crappy for Amazon to sell and deserving of the label. They are not comparable to refurbs.
OMG items have been modest discounts over Woot prices. If that doesn’t appeal to you don’t buy them. I’m not sure why anyone would.

@sammydog01 Except the OMG items don’t allow a return. And it was not a modest discount, it was not only the same price that I could have bought it elsewhere for, but generally a total ripoff as I could have bought a combination expansion set that included it for a similar price. But this is why I made sure to buy a reasonably inexpensive OMG item for the first (and last) time. I can’t imagine being the suckers who paid $250 or whatever it was this week.

@sammydog01 The Crategate remedy was also on the website, confirmed by TT and other staffers. The first few who took advantage of the remedy were rewarded with the full benefits as was initially reported. Then Woot changed the offer (twice) and even stooped to ninja editing the item description a month after the sale was over, when dissatisfied buyers began gathering in the square with torches and pitchforks.
For all the fun they can be at times, Woot has also proved many times to be less than forthright in their sales.
