@phendrick@stolicat there’s been an April Fool mehrathon in the past. I think one of those times was the infamous captcha challenge. I remember my wife yelling at me in the middle of the night for making to much noise. Good times…
@yakkoTDI It doesn’t have that little red plastic line, mechanically attached to the tuning knob, that moves along the freq numbers. Now if it had that and an AM band …
For $70 it’s unbelievable you can’t set what it automatically turns on to. At the very least you’d think it would save the last used source. Along with the loud announcement when switching sources I definitely regret this purchase.
@The_Tim As a follow up, I still do think it’s overpriced for what it is. You’d mainly be buying it for the aesthetic which in that regard I’m content with. I bought it to replace an old boom box that sat on the kitchen table and in that regard it looks much nicer and saves on having to swap out batteries every so often. It’s also worth noting it is very much mono and I don’t think it does HD radio at all. It would’ve been a really nice feature to have the LCD show description text from radio stations.
While the source thing is very annoying, it actually became a boon when my toddler started fiddling with it. Since it always turns on to BT first he can crank the volume max without blowing out the speaker. However that was short lived as soon as he found the source button and the radio cheerfully announcing the source.
So, how come these things never have AM radio bands anymore? Only saying because many of the Emergency Broadcast Frequencies are still AM, and (so i’m told) the AM frequency is more reliable in apocalyptic situations, so when the tsunami/earthquake/tornado/hurricane/nuclear attack/Trump re-election happens, are we just left with sports-talk radio and rockin’ 90s stations?
Someone with more real knowledge about this is sure to respond …
@stolicat It is made cheap, and they probably didn’t want to bother with the AM antenna in the box.
Seeing as the reviews seem to say that the FM reception is mediocre at best, I wouldn’t trust this radio for that, either; sticking with bluetooth is probably the best bet.
@stolicat Don’t forget NPR! We’ll also have NPR. Until things get so bad that no one donates during their fund drive. But at that point, the commercial stations will probably be off the air, too…
@stolicat way i understand it, AM needs a decently tuned coil antenna, while FM can be done with a small chip placed inside a Nokia cellphone or Sansa mp3 player.
@stolicat , as others have mentioned, AM antennae cost way more than FM, and they’re harder for today’s young engineers to design using their new math.
That’s why i keep a half-dozen Sony ICF-S10MK2 radios around the house. It’s a real shame Sony quit selling those.
@ciabelle@stolicat I had a HAM radio once- it was Swiss, and very cheesy. Mrs. News made a few wry comments, but it just couldn’t cut the mustard. I eventually sold it to actor John Hamm, who was living in Rye NY at the time. He then moved to Ireland and spilled mayo on it- Yuck!
…when I was a kid in the 80’s, I remember AM-only radios being cheap, while AM/FM radios were more expensive.
And back in the '60s, parents were horrified at the cost of the 9V batteries that the pocket transistor radios needed, and the teachers at school would confiscate the radio if they heard it.
@Doodpants@stolicat An AM radio antenna is basically copper wire wrapped around a ferrite rod. Copper costs a lot more nowadays. AM antennae aren’t too difficult, you just need to nail down the length of the wire as well as some decent interference filtering. You need to change the orientation of the radio sometimes to get the best reception.
FM radio was still a bit of a novelty in late 70s / early 80s electronics, so you paid “extra” to have that latest feature.
Anywayz, most AM radio is crap nowadays. The golden years (mostly the 70s) ended in the late 80s when talk radio started getting a footing. Talk radio is basically designed to brainwash people. Fortunately, i have a local AM station that has live DJs and real news from 6am-6pm.
It’s been a long time, but from what I can remember from school: AM is trivial to detect and decode, while FM needs a IF (Intermediate Frequency) oscillator. More parts = more expensive.
Of course there’s the usual “charge more for more features” factor as well.
@blaineg@Doodpants@mrdancer@stolicat AM radios typically use a 455kHz IF to regularize the signal and feed it across to the filter that demods it. FM needs a different set of tricks, and there’s not an IF involved. With integrated circuits, implementing any of the common FM demod methods is trivially easy and cheap, while AM still needs stuff that’s not required for much of anything else. (Can you tell that I had a year and a half of E Tech back when discrete components were still pretty much the rule?)
@stolicat Your TDS sure is strong, especially in light of the apocalyptic 14 months we’ve just endured which keeps getting worse by the day. “Real knowledge” would surely upset your life bubble so I’m sure you just deny it. Keep streaming your cnn through the Monster’s bluetooth, triple mask all your orifices and you’ll be just fine in your safe space k(ar)en.
@Kidsandliz Shipping regulations preclude supplying the unit with the mouse in residence. You are expected to advertise for a suitable tenant locally, and you are solely responsible for the quality thereof. Using a rental agency is optional.
@werehatrack I’m not buying then. That mouse appears to live alone and hasn’t damaged the entrance. Many mice do serious damage to their residence and let other mice not on the lease move it. Nope. Too high a risk to buy without that tenant.
@blaineg@werehatrack Actually as I have cats the other problem would be getting a new mouse to move in. Dangerous neighborhood and all.
The cats have already killed and eaten lizards, crickets, and killed and puked cockroaches. And one of them has a history of killing and eating birds (backyard bird feeder dinner bait kitty who was a stray). That’s enough I think to scare away and but the most desperate of tenants.
On the plus side no mouse traps here, just cockroach sticky papers and poison. That might increase the interest of a few tenants.
@guyfromhawthorn
The pocket knives predate me, and I’m probably not in the market for one these days. Between the Opinel that I carry in my belt pack, and the modified folding utility knife I carry in my pocket (when I have pockets, which is usually), I’m not in dire need.
@werehatrack
I keep misplacing mine or forgetting to take it out before I get to the airport security line, so into the garbage they go. I’m therefore usually in the market for a cheap but decent knife
They call it retro cuz it’s suckitude remeinds you that your life always sucked and that wireless chargers still suck and are one more way to speed up climate change.
@vorever A one-ton dually turbo diesel pickemup rolling coal all the way to Chick-Fil-A and back is far more efficient for speeding up climate change. Particularly when they plug the DEF line.
the 1 in the linked review video on youtube looks nothing like the images on the product page here? the 1 in the video looks like a cheap knockoff version of the 1 pictured on meh. which 1 are you selling here?
@WhiteKenny It’s the same unit, but for the photo shoot, they have a professional device cosmetician to prep and primp the well-rested model before doing the poses.What you get in the box is the weary, jet-lagged production version. That’s why it’s so cranky, and always shouts so much.
@werehatrack are you sure about that? besides all the cosmetic differences, the 1 in the youtube video has a exposed speaker on the bottom while the 1 on meh does not. there are also a different number of buttons between the 2 devices, and the look of the buttons isn’t the same either. also, the USB port is not in the same location. those don’t seem like things that would be changed just for taking product pictures.
@WhiteKenny Good catch. The one in the video is the Monster Decora, very similar but not identical. Here’s a link to an even less informative unboxing of the Retro…
@omegamonkey do a lot of people listen to that? I’ve only caught it a few times, but it always struck me as a weird, conspiracy/fringe theory kind of show (i.e. aliens and pyramids kinda thing)…
@haydesigner Not sure if a lot of people listen to it, but yeah, a lot of alien, ghost and conspiracy theories. I find it fun and entertaining. From my memory, a lot of truck drivers listen as they are generally up the early hours in the morning, they would call in a lot. Art Bell was a long time host, he was great, kinda had that old timey radio voice.
@omegamonkey I miss when it was aliens and ghosts and cryptids. I think it was in the early aughts that it went full lunatic conspiracies all the time and I stopped listening.
@wilw Yes, I think a lot of Coast to Coast that I listened to in the mid/late 2000 was the best of Art Bell, mostly paranormal stuff. Something about it just helped me sleep. I remember one crazy episode were it was just about shadow people, freaked me out a little!
Isn’t this the one that has an insanely loud voice announce any settings change? One review described the nighttime scenario: set the volume to minimum, and then change the source to Bluetooth… and a computer-generated voice yells “BLEEeeEEWWTOOOTHH” at TOP #@(%!&$ VOLUME… and then you switch it back and it yells “EEEFFFFEMMM RAAAAYDYOOO” …then everyone in the house is awake and angry.
it said it was stereo (nowhere in the specs does it say it has stereo capability. You would assume it does, but so many Bluetooth speakers are mono, I just don’t trust it)
Heck, I might even pay an extra $20 for the above goodies.
“But then how do you explain the un-coolness of something like the PT Cruiser?” Chevy tried with the HHR and then GM took the bail out money…or they used the money to build the HHR? Either way,some things are just better forgotten
@detailer Nothing made by the Big 3 was ever uncooler than the Pontiac Aztek, but Chevy tried really hard with the SSR. It made the HHR look chic, which is probably why the HHR lasted longer.
@werehatrack How could I forget the Aztek??..Walt’s ride in Breaking Bad.Alongside that stylish marvel,GM brought us the Trans Sport and the Lumina APV Well done.The SSR was way over priced when you bumped up the trim levels…near 50K …outrageous in those days.As long as we are talking ugly,AMC Matador and Pacer.Don’t stare too long…the images will burn into your retinas I could talk butt ugly cars for hours,but gotta go Be well Cheers!!
@detailer@werehatrack When Pacers were new, I saw one with the full fishbowl treatment. Custom paint like a van mural, and large, glittery, stuffed animal fish hanging in each rear quarter window.
I keep seeing this over here and over on MorningSave for months -and the stubbornness until now at $69. And much like many here I see it and my interest is at first piqued until one scratches the surface of the semi cool retro look only to realize that underneath the hood is nothing but sadness and another device that will sit around reminding me of my own disappointing judgement with a lifetime of so many gadgets that underwhelm and like the old Johnson Smith advertising in the back of the old comic books the X-ray specs never quite work like they say (nor does the exotic dancing girl In the pen really perform either) sigh

@stolicat April 1 is only ten days away. Maybe then… ?
@phendrick @stolicat there’s been an April Fool mehrathon in the past. I think one of those times was the infamous captcha challenge. I remember my wife yelling at me in the middle of the night for making to much noise. Good times…
You may have failed CAPTCHA but on the upside, you’re less of a human.
Doesn’t look that retro.
@yakkoTDI It doesn’t have that little red plastic line, mechanically attached to the tuning knob, that moves along the freq numbers. Now if it had that and an AM band …
@yakkoTDI When I think of retro, I always think of RGB LEDs, and MDF, Plastic, & PVC.
Question is how long will it last
@Cerridwyn That depends upon how far above the ground you are when you toss it out the window.
Sweet!! It’s 4:20!!
SPEAKER DOCK!!!
Oh, boy, more speaker docks.
Now’s my chance to not buy this again. I want it but I know I won’t use it. I don’t know what to do anymore, what have I become.
Is that the mouse that roared?
$20 cheaper than last time this was offered here. One interesting note in the thread from the previous sale in November from @DrunkCat -
@The_Tim As a follow up, I still do think it’s overpriced for what it is. You’d mainly be buying it for the aesthetic which in that regard I’m content with. I bought it to replace an old boom box that sat on the kitchen table and in that regard it looks much nicer and saves on having to swap out batteries every so often. I saw this Amazon review, and it really sums up everything you need to know about this speaker:
@robson Then it’s being sold in exactly the right place.
@Kyeh That’s why I posted it!
@robson
@robson I paid about $7 for my really loud alarm clock and I already have an Alexa device, can’t imagine anything more meh than this thing! Good find!
So, how come these things never have AM radio bands anymore? @stolicat Ideally for post-apocalyptic scenarios you’d want to have shortwave too. Though perhaps the best bet is HAM radio.
Regardless, this is not anything I’d count on to be of any use once the nukes are launched.
@stolicat , as others have mentioned, AM antennae cost way more than FM, and they’re harder for today’s young engineers to design using their new math.
That’s why i keep a half-dozen Sony ICF-S10MK2 radios around the house. It’s a real shame Sony quit selling those.
@stolicat - There’s one (literally) on Amazon Prime at the moment for the low low price of $174.99!

FYI Reviews say "It’s NOT compatible with the new iPhones that use fast QI wireless charging. "
I’m definitely not buying one, but I will say it’s nice to see Meh going back to its roots. Hopefully pocket knives are up tomorrow!

I am getting a really strong Son Of Speaker Dock vibe off of this.
Speaker Dock?
It’s coming true. Meh is being reborn. Like a Phoenix out of the litter box.
@OnionSoup Or, for this one, what the phoenix left in the litter box…

If it had AM capabilities, I would be in. I miss listening to Coast to Coast into the wee hours of the night….
@omegamonkey do a lot of people listen to that? I’ve only caught it a few times, but it always struck me as a weird, conspiracy/fringe theory kind of show (i.e. aliens and pyramids kinda thing)…
@haydesigner @omegamonkey There are at least two streaming stations playing best of Art Bell Coast to Coast. He was fantastic.
@haydesigner Not sure if a lot of people listen to it, but yeah, a lot of alien, ghost and conspiracy theories. I find it fun and entertaining. @mrdancer sounds like just getting it to shut up is worth that alone.
@mrdancer stereo requires 2 channels let alone 2 speakers to hear the separation. Most Bluetooth speakers like this lack it
@mrdancer @pmarin
Easy-peasy. Don’t buy one! If you already made the mistake, who do you know that qualifies for A Special Gift From A Special Friend?
How good is the FM reception though? If it worked better than my phones I might be tempted

Is another good place for wonderful trash.
And you get a free finger monster with every order.
And once again, sold out, though I suspect that the VMPs will get a shot at a small cache at 4PMEDT if this is like recent sellouts.
@werehatrack The deal has been paused.
@werehatrack Meh. They probably only had 5 on deck. It’s not that great.

@comeatmebro @pmarin It’d up to 365 now, so the VMPs have been nibbling the last few bits off the carcass somewhat desultorily.

or M0N5T3R-M45H
Am I looking at this wrong?
I wanted one, but it sold out too quickly. Ah well, such is life.
The specs on this are pretty bad for Monster.i wonder if it’s a re-brand.

Can’t use the wireless charging at night cause it makes a loud sound if you put the phone on the charger.
