@chiefbugbung, GSM stands for grams per square meters, and has somepin to do with the weight of the lenin item [& no, not John Lennon]. The more gsm the better & the more luxuriant the (in this particular case) towel. Ergo 600 gsm isn’t really too shabby, but 900 would be a lot more luxurious, more absorbent, etc. I did purchase this set because ya get 4 towels + the bath towels are 13" & i despise 11" & 12" bath towels, but that’s just me & i digress…my bad!!
@chiefbugbung@wpfleischmann, yeah, i made a grave error,… I thunk these were 600 gsm, which was low enuff,… but they’re 500 freakin gsm which is getting on the ‘too damn low’ gram fn crackers per square meteorites, or what fuckin ever,… Sorry, but i’m so dam mad now i can’t i can’t think, nor make any fn sense!! Well,… i guess i should be glad i didn’t buy these from Amazon! I wonder how much fabric softener cost these days & do they make a decent generic softener¿? 🫣
Bath towel is 1428" square inches, 1428 about, 1.13 yards square, so the entire bath towel weighs maybe
1.1 times 1.13 or 1 and a quarter pounds.
If you have a favorite heavyweight, thus really absorbent, bath towel, try weighing it and see what you get?
I might even do that myself tomorrow … after the margaritas wear off. Also to measure my favorite towel, to see if it is the same 27x54" size as advertised here.
These are not exceptional towels. Someone compared them to k-mart quality and that’s not far off. Not soft, not plush but at least they get the job done. I bought two sets the first time they came around and wish I’d paid more for something better.
@Pinfar “They get the job done” is at least something. I’ve encountered too many towels that are soft, look and feel very high quality, but just push water around instead of absorbing anything.
I have some tea towels I inherited from a relative that actually REPEL water. If you pour water on them, it beads up on the surface and runs off.
The cotton is…combed. We don’t know what that means.
My understanding is that “combed” is the most basic step in processing of the fiber into yarn/thread suitable for textile manufacturing. Essentially, until combed or otherwise processed (such as being made into “ring spun”), it’s still just a fibrous mass. So that’s every bit as much of a “feature” as when Meh lists the condition of LoveCorn as “New”.
When you see a description that says “luxurious premium combed cotton”, you can rest assured that they’re using those first two adjectives solely to boost their bottom line, not to accurately describe the product.
500gsm appears to be a middling weight, but mass alone does not tell the entire story. The way that the yarn is spun, the grade of cotton used, and a couple of other factors can make two 500gsm towels feel and act very different. It’s similar to the situation often discussed in regard to t-shirts; the traditional type of cotton knit is somewhat stiff and rough by comparison to the ring-spun kind of the same weight. The numbers describe just one characteristic among many.
I got these the last time they were offered for some reason, and they are not good. They’re relatively soft, but they actively repel water until you run them through the wash once, afterwards they soak up some water, but are still not very good. The washcloths make decent kitchen towels.
@FajitaofTreason I’ve had to wash most new towels before they became absorbent. I think the manufacturers treat the fibers with something to make them easier to run through the machinery, and it has to be washed out before the fabric is really ready to use.
@werehatrack Totally, and while I did try to use them before washing them, I was expecting them to be more absorbent after a wash, but didn’t want people to write them off completely if they also tried them prior to washing them. Your comment makes this much clearer, thanks!

(My dog does not care for the local firecrackers. I think she’d like to identify their lawn for retaliation.)
Jacquard? Is that the bald guy from Star Trak?
@awk Bald because he doesn’t like gray.
@awk @Kidsandliz Earl, hot.
@awk @blaineg @Kidsandliz
I have a good gray-haired friend named Earl. He once dressed for Halloween as a teabag!
@awk Engage!
@awk @blaineg @Kidsandliz @Kyeh How did that work out for him? Did he get teabagged?
@awk @blaineg @Kidsandliz @robson
I doubt it.
@awk @blaineg @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @robson wouldn’t he be in the drivers seat?
@awk @blaineg @Kidsandliz Borg Queen.
@awk @blaineg @Kidsandliz @Kyeh That’s so awesome, I hope it’s true.
WORKER BEES! HERCULES! TURKEY GREASE! AWESOME!
@brainmist

What is 500 gsm?
@chiefbugbung grams per square meter? Or global system for mobile, if they have cellular capabilities.
@chiefbugbung it’s more than a 0gsm!

@1DisabledWarVet @chiefbugbung how is the quality of this set?
@1DisabledWarVet @chiefbugbung @wpfleischmann so it is false advertising?
I ordered towels from Meh in the past. They are rough, both in feeling and in value.
@hchavers oh yes, these must be OLD kmart stock… our were terrible!
@hchavers Agreed. Have this model and one is already unraveling. Like that they’re allegedly cotton, but regert [sic] the purchase overall.
Second package of towels I got is in the goodwill pile, unopened.
Meh.
If you’re going for underwhelming, you nailed it.
Grams/square meter?
If so, about 1.1 pounds per square yard?

Meh Summer reruns are making me want to throw in the towel.
Deez ugly towels!

They must be saving the good stuff for the upcoming birthday event. (Ugh, I tried.)

@brennyn @Pinfar I bet that chicken-themed tea set is looking pretty good now.
@MrNews some of the other colors are even cheaper over there and the list price for this set is only $42 according to what they show now.
@MrNews Amazon’s listings are for SIX towel sets, not TWELVE. You get twice as many here, for roughly the same price.
@werehatrack good eye! I’m going to call this a holiday related lapse in reading comprehension on my part.
@djslack @werehatrack Standing too close to M-80s when they go off can do that to you. See https://www.verywellhealth.com/concussion-protocol-5195083
(Or consult Troy Aikman.)
Not cheap enough to line a cat carrier, reportedly not good enough to want to use them for something else. It’s no surprise that they’re on Meh.

I am curious about the research that went into this statement.

Ugh such bad reviews. Was going to order but not now!
I guess I’m not a picky lil bitch!! Towels are great!!!
