Mistress GoaT - June 22nd
9Welcome to the weekend. Sorry this post is late, but I was distracted last night and forgot!
Anyway, today is National Onion Ring Day! How do you like your onion rings? Do you like the little crispy ones you can just pop in your mouth? Or maybe the big ones, where you have to suck the onion out?
Anyway, go out and grab an order, maybe play an interesting game of ring toss with them

@tinamarie1974 This is your fault tonight. Thank you!
@cinoclav and with whom will you be playing ring toss. Remember I suggested THAT as well!
@tinamarie1974 None of them had big enough holes for a proper game, but you’re definitely invited over to try.
@cinoclav
The big ones.

Onion rings cost more than French fries, yet onions are cheaper than potatoes. I think a secret star chamber or cartel is running our country.
@Sefar from my time working in restaurants, onion rings are a lot more work (slice, separate, batter prep, etc.), and less than 50% of the onion is usable for rings. For potatoes the yield is close to 100% if you use the edges and you have one of those cylindrical slicers where you stand the potato in it and just push down.
Regardless, my faves are home-made thin-batter crispy ones.
@Sefar I love a good conspiracy more than most, but where I shop, potatoes are quite a bit less per pound than onions. Add to that the potatoes are close to 100% utilization for the fries, and onions are at best what? 50% utilization? to make onion rings. We haven’t even gotten to the labor cost of cleaning peeling and slicing, then separating out the rings of the onion, then battering, breading and frying the onion. Whereas the potato can be simply sliced and fried.

@stolicat that is what the government wants you to think. There are robot onion ring maker patents in desk drawers at Ore Ida hq…
@therealjrn the truth is out there. Depressing French fry prices dates back to earliest oppression of Irish potato farmers by the English. Where do onions come from? France. You do the math.
@Sefar @therealjrn can’t we all just get along?

Onion Rings or Bloomin Onion?
I prefer the Bloomin Onion. Moar edibles.
The onion rings I like the least:
Sonic.
They are disgusting. They taste like funnel cake. That would be great if there was no onion involved.
I like smooth battered ones versus the bread crumb type.
@RiotDemon ugh you are so right - all fried stuff at sonic tastes like funnel cake
I like all sizes. Onion ring towers that go from small to large are the greatest. Prefer them a bit on the crispy side so panko tends to win over batter.
Onion Rings
are just
Vegetable Donuts
CHANGE MY MIND.
