@ELUNO I sent mine in already also - nothing is going to make a huge difference with an early pick between Tuesday and Wednesday as far as I can tell.

@f00l I’m in the same boat as you (4 google accounts I’m logged into right now), but I can tell you that it doesn’t offer to let you select which account you want to use so it would be a pain since you’d have to keep logging in and out. On top of that, you’d need multiple google accounts and multiple meh accounts since a meh username is required

How does it verify that the Meh username of the form actually belongs to the Meh user in question?

@f00l Heh, I’m slow this morning. I’ve actually used incognito for that exact reason in the past. Oh well. Anyway, I’m sure @jbartus is on top of it, but I would think the easiest way to check would be if there are multiple accounts associated with one meh account for it either to not accept the second (and then I’d assume the user would post here asking about it), or if it accepts multiples to just ask the user here which is correct. If one person enters a bunch of times by using other people’s accounts who aren’t actually playing, all you’d have to do is ask him/her to make a post here verifying that it was him/her if (s)he wins.

It’s not a perfect system but it’s the best one I’ve got for the present.

• Could somebody put in someone else’s Meh username? Sure could but why do so?
• Entries are limited to one per Google account, multiple under the same username will draw immediate suspicion and result in my having to jump through hoops to create a verification process for the user in question. Off the top of my head the easiest option will probably be to delay the release of the public data and ask that person to manually confirm their picks with me after submissions close but before the end of the day on Thursday (18-24 hour response window, should be plenty of time) to ascertain the correct entry while preventing cheating by any party. Pain in the ass but if someone decides to fuck with the integrity of the contest a necessary step.
• There is obviously a potential case whereby someone uses several Google accounts and several Meh usernames to get multiple pick sets in each week but the edge case where such a tactic would lead to an overall victory for any one account is effectively null in my opinion.

I had considered requiring an email address on the form and then having the email address in question locked to the specific user as verification but I felt that it would discourage participation by people who did not wish to expose their contact information to some random guy on the internet (me)

Nothing ever is - if it appears that there is a lot of questionable activity with the entries or if people are spoofing entries, etc., then we’ll just turn it off and I’ll send you the fuku for all your hard work. If everyone doesn’t play nice and fair then I guess that is why we can’t have really cool things. But honestly, I don’t see this being a huge issue. I’ll leave it to you to let us know how it is going.

I do not see the associated emails. I considered having it set up that way as a security measure to prevent cheating but as mentioned above felt it would discourage privacy minded mehmbers from participating.

@jbartus I was under the impression it would timestamp the entry but still accept them (told you this Google form thing was my strong suit - LOL) - I feel it might be better if there was a small grace period . . . maybe 15 minutes past 11:59PM Eastern on Wednesday nights, that way if someone comes to the site for item change on the main page and then scoots over into the forum and notices this thread which has most likely been bumped as a reminder, they can still have a few minutes to get in a pick. Since nothing is going to drop online in those few minutes that would give someone an advantage, might as well not lock someone out on the exact deadline. Sound fair?

Or, maybe we should have just made the deadline 12:15 AM Eastern Thursday mornings, to allow for time to check the deal of the day and still get in a pick - LOL. I should have considered that initially.

Not to worry. I’m almost as careful on my picks as when I throw darts blindfolded.

I believe that there truly is not an advantage anyone might gain by accessing the data collected here in this contest before main game lock. Too much can change between Wednesday midnight (our cut off) and Friday at noon Eastern (main game screen lock) - especially when it comes to BP / PC considerations. There are early picks published in Chatter on the main site all the time - but arguably, the vast majority are hedge plays (and rarely are they intentional misinformation, which is genuinely surprising).

Ultimately, my decision is based solely on the desire that we would have the greatest number of participants. If any player is uncomfortable with having our list published before screen lock on the main game and such would hinder their participation and our ability to collect the largest possible data-set over the course of these eight weeks, then the decision must obviously be to hold publication regardless of the articulation of any argument for or against doing so.

Although I have zero doubt that my chances in this league would improve if I copied either of your early picks.

At this moment I don’t want today to do a spreadsheet and research. Or worry over gaming the rules. And I know next to nothing about any film that’s not a blockbuster. And on those I know only ever heard bits of buzz and usually have not seen the trailers.

I’m in this to see how wrong I can be: always a happy surprise. If I pick quickly using the app on the phone, I don’t even know the film titles, just their prices. And I have mild curiosity about what that comes out of the studios and actually performs. I’m always astonished when a serious film for adults makes $.

Can the entry you got be checked against the site webpage for the future?

I.e. For everyone who entered, take a PDF snapshot of their online choices if the the theater shows a budget overrun or something else doesn’t add up.

Or you could even setup the form or the spreadsheet to flag those sorts of errors upon data entry.

There is a PITA math way to make this somewhat fair if you don’t get another kind of fix. Average the person’s standing among all the other weeks. Just give that same average standing (average standing, not $) to that theater for the f’d up week.

@f00l there is no practical way for me to implement such a system making use of Google Forms. I would have to build out a custom site with an advanced form system and then find some way to hook it into Google Sheets, plus it would increase the amount of time it takes me each Monday to get things up even further. I posted the costs next to each film for people to reference, phones and computers have calculator apps, this is not my issue.

@kassh agreed, I’m not going to be making exceptions every time or there’d be no point to rules. The sole reason I offered in this case is that the impact if I follow the letter of what I laid down would be in excess of half of their score due to the massive nature of the budgetary overrun.

@mick it’s one of the rules of Fantasy Movie League. I think the idea is that it simulates having to pay staff and utilities for a theater you’re not deriving revenue from so you have all of the costs and none of the profit. That’s why there is a $2MM penalty / cost for unfilled screens. It’s still viable to only use some or most of your screens provided you get the right combination.

This morning I tried using Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Dolphin, all up to date, all on IOS. Didn’t try on Android because was out of time. Horrible identical behavior on all 4 browsers.

This afternoon, in order to catalog the many misbehaviors, I re-opened the form as an edit on Safari. Couldn’t do anything.

Then logged out of google account and logged back in. Suddenly the sun was shining and fountains flowing. All good. Could use form no prob.

same appears to work ok for Dophin, Chrome, Firefox as well.

So I guess all’s well that ends …

I tend to agree. I had thought the modifiers brought over from the actual game (BP/PC scoring) was enough. If there is a compelling reason to look at something different, I’m of an open mind, but for this eight week “trial run” I figured it was high score takes it.

@f00l The parameters are set for this one - I can appreciate the desire to tweak things as we go along, but the rules were laid out at the beginning and we’ve extended the window to submit (very briefly) already. I’m appreciative of the data that is coming in as a result of this contest and if we run this again, which we probably will, we can discuss things like dropping the lowest week, etc. - but for now, game on! A few of us were bound to miss the deadline - we’ve had three days though, we could have always made coma picks and adjusted them prior to the submission window closing on Wednesday midnight(ish). Not any different than the real game - if you miss it, you miss it. And, who knows what might happen? A bunch of others could also miss in a coming week and the playing field might level. Just because it probably won’t happen doesn’t mean it absolutely won’t happen - which is why they need to actually throw the damn ball in baseball to intentionally walk a batter - no one knows what will happen. Sorry, the baseball thing is a little off topic but FFS, just throw the damn ball. I feel like shit - going back to bed.

@Confusedkitty there is no way for me to set the form to shut down selectively by time zone, and if we’re going to pick one time zone where do we draw the line? Alaska is an hour behind PST and Hawaii is two hours behind. We picked midnight EST specifically to correspond with Meh’s deal postings to make it easy on everybody memory-wise

During the weekend of Rogue One’s release, the prices were incredibly high for Rogue One per day.

That’s what the site does for movies that are expected to be so huge that nothing else could be imaginably within sight of the weekend earnings for that film - in that case, the site makes you to chose either Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, at different bid prices for that huge movie because of different earning projections per day for that film.

By the next week, they would let you put Rogue One in a theater for an entire weekend because the earning projections had become more in line with a normal blockbuster.

@Guardingnome the carryover I do is mimicking FML’s handling of theaters. People who fail to put up new screens have their prior week’s screens roll over where possible (still limited to the 15 movies of the week) and get whatever take those movies have that week.

When they split a movie for the weekend it is more complicated, they don’t roll those over, instead the complete weekend title is treated as an entirely separate movie. Thus far I am treating any Rogue One Week 1 day as a pick for Rogue One for Week 2 but am open to reviewing this if people don’t think we should.
