@dnh127 I like K-State and will be rooting for them, too, but I hate their coach. He’s an idiot and has cost them too many games with his stupid coaching decisions during their games.
Texas is broke too, except for all the folks who run the gubment and their many many good buddies.
Don’t worry, when the Rich Texans come to take Kansas’s money, they’ll find plenty. They always do. They always take most of it.
The only way to keep your hidden money from being taken to Texas by Texans is to get the State of Texas to annex your Kansas.
Might be a good thing, huh? Get a better State Flag. Actual mountains and beaches. Home-grown grapefruit and avocados. Places with no winter. Better Mexican food.
And the stupidity of your gubment wouldn’t change much.
BTW I’ve been to Kansas. So there.
One of my Dad’s war buddy pilots had a farm there. Little farming town, I think in SW Kansas. I don’t remember the name of the town tho.
His farm looked exactly like a perfect farm. You could have used it for a magazine shoot.
I’ve run an unofficial one in the Everything But Woot section of the Woot forums for about a decade; I’ll put a link in here once I’ve reactivated this year’s group. I’ve always run it on CBS Sports, if that helps you get a head start.
@jqubed I’m in. I thought I’d be able to create a user name, but it just asked for my name so I’m Joel W. I don’t care if the world knows who I am, goddamnit.
We had tourneys here last year. I did horribly, based on my algorithm of random guessing and the idea that teams I have heard of might possibly be good. Good to go for this year.
They’re awesome. And it’s on my bucket list to become one. I’ve submitted a couple of times, but I’m still a noink. See, I can’t even claim the dishonor of being a certified Loser. Though I have been mentioned in the Conversational and one of my suggestions for something did get used.
I’m also in their Facebook group and several Losers are now my FB friends (whenever I see that one of them will put up with me; yeah, I’m sad). Basically they’re a bunch of over-educated, excessively-intelligent word nerds who frequently partake in potty humor and shameless innuendo–and hangers-on like me.
It’s one of the best things about the internet (though it predates it). Several of their contests have turned to textual memes.
Here’s an enviable collection of honorable mention magnets:
@f00l You could start by subscribing to the Post. They do good work (that whole Watergate business, for instance). And now more than ever we need to support folks doing real journalism.
@f00l I should have known. I’ve been going back and forth on the Times subscription. I want to pick up another newspaper, but I’m a cheap motherfucker.
@joelmw
I got a great perpetual deal on the NYT last Memorial Day. Check the NYT website around all the holidays.
What I want is something similar to Texture or to Amazon Prime Magazines, but for newspapers. Where I can subscribe to a bunch of them for a flat monthly fee.
I actually listen more than read now.
I would do NPR but there’s no podcast, I wanna play it at 1.5 speed or something and unless I go to the trouble of recording it and playing it back, I can’t do that they the app. Although the app does have listen on demand.
But I do a ton of news and current affairs podcasts. I subscribe to way too many and wander among them.
What’s happening in DC movie es so fast that I’m not doing any books right now. Just news.
You know you can get Wapo digital discounted if you have Amazon Price me, right? And per @OldCatLady if you have Prime you can get access to a bunch of magazines at no charge.
I need to add The Atlantic to my reading list. I’m only 10 years behind, might as well put more stuff on it.
BYW the Maddow show and the 1st hour of Music ending Joe are free podcasts. And 538 does good podcasts and so does Brookings and Axelrod and politico and on and on.
@f00l Yep, I’m getting the Prime discount on WaPo. NPR does have some good podcasts, including a couple devoted to politics. Though I’m a little disenchanted with them after last year’s election. I still think they’re better than most, but, honestly, I find that they have a conservative and narrow bias. They shat on Sanders. Diane Rehm was the worst (bias-wise) and she had always been condescending before that anyway. Ironically, I didn’t hate the show. She had some great guests and relatively broad panels; I just preferred it when there was a guest host. But I’m glad she retired; it was overdue. Cokie Roberts can be horribly dismissive too, though I do have more respect for her. But their regular news, even before the analysis, tends to be biased. Contrary to what a lot of reactionaries think, I believe they go out of their way to provide balanced coverage of and voices from the right. But they’re too often utterly dismissive of the left. One of my closest and maybe more radical friends uses the #fuckNPR hashtag probably at least once a week.
I’ve had mixed feelings about The Young Turks, but I find myself liking them more and more. And they just picked up Shaun King, who’s one of my heroes (I’ve seen him in person a couple of times, and the wifey and I got to chat with him a little and get a selfie once). He’s a smart kid and tells it like it is.
Maybe this comment is emblematic (and, hey, we know it’s typical of me), but I’m not super systemic about the way I consume the news these days. I just try to make sure I rely on good sources and vet the ones I either don’t know so well and of course verify the facts from those I don’t generally trust. Used to be that I had a high level of confidence that if I heard it on ME or ATC it was good. I guess I still have a degree of confidence, but it’s shaky.
Interestingly, Ira’s team over at This American Life has done some great long-form news over the last few years. What they do is journalism to begin with, but tends to be more featuresy. Anyway, they’ve done some great financial reporting among other things, and I recently listened to a beautiful set on immigration.
Sometimes I love Maddow, but too often she’s just a cheerleader for the Democrats and even when I agree with her, she’s just too much of a polemicist. Idunno, I’ve just not ever quite had a thing for her. I need to look into 538. I think I’ve seen some of those podcasts, but haven’t listened.
Frankly, I don’t feel the need to pay attention to the news nearly as much. The dumbfuck in the White House, his band of thugs and the crooks in the majority in Congress are so fucking egregious and brazen and un-self-consciously self-contradictory that they’re pretty fucking easy to track. The evidential and philosophical grounds for protest and resistance are equally straightforward. Yeah, there’s still cause to dive deep, and I do, but, really, there’s only so much of the depressing, enraging, ridiculous shit I can stand, and it takes a toll. Self care demands that I keep it in moderation and maintain focus where I feel I can make a difference.
I hope this bullshit doesn’t become the new normal. Like Jesse says, keep hope alive.
“Will there one organized for 2017”, what does that mean?
That would be cool.
I don’t really care about the brackets, but I just want to say Rock Chalk, Jayhawk. Go KU! and Go Shockers!
You sucked UT!
@Barney
We Longhorns are sometimes weak in the Basketball.
It’s ok tho. We compensate by taking all your money.
@f00l Ha, f00led you! I don’t have any money.
@Barney No love for K-State? They are your favorite color.
@dnh127 I like K-State and will be rooting for them, too, but I hate their coach. He’s an idiot and has cost them too many games with his stupid coaching decisions during their games.
@Barney
I didn’t mean we’d take your personal money. I meant we Texans would take almost all your state’s money.
Don’t worry, we always leave some.
@f00l Our state is broke – there is no money left to take. Seriously. Our governor has come close to bankrupting us.

@Barney
I believe you about Kansas being broke.
Texas is broke too, except for all the folks who run the gubment and their many many good buddies.

@f00l That doesn’t meant that YOU are coming here, does it? If it does, all negotiations are off.
@Barney
Negotiations? Huh?
BTW I’ve been to Kansas. So there.

@jqubed And has done a damn fine job.
@jqubed I may join. Thanks! Don’t worry, I make random picks and suck but it’s still fun.
@sammydog01 @pooflady The brackets are up for this year, details on the Woot! forums.
@jqubed Thanks! Added my bracket.
@jqubed I’m in. I thought I’d be able to create a user name, but it just asked for my name so I’m Joel W. I don’t care if the world knows who I am, goddamnit.
@jqubed Thanks, btw.
@jqubed I added one. I may add another and think about it before I click. Or maybe not.
@jqubed have you had a chance to reactivate?
@elimanningface Yes they’re active now; did you try and have trouble joining?
@jqubed I’m sorry, I don’t think I see the link. Can you paste it again here, please?
@elimanningface oh, I am a dum-dum. I see your link @jqubed!
We had tourneys here last year. I did horribly, based on my algorithm of random guessing and the idea that teams I have heard of might possibly be good. Good to go for this year.
@f00l Hey! That is MY technique! I expect royalties!
/giphy crickets
So no officially unofficial or official meh bracket challenge?
/giphy boo
@joelmw
I think @MEHcus set up all that previously. He’s no longer Mediocre staff. So I did a bracket in the Woot league.
My bracket is better than yours at being worse.
Or my bracket is worse than yours at being better.
Something, anyway. You Lose.
@f00l How arrogant of you to think you’re a better loser than I am.
/giphy harumph
@joelmw
I’m a much better Total Loser than everyone else in the known universe.
I am also much more Stupidly Arrogant than everyone else in the known universe.
It’s A Gift.
/giphy "it’s a gift"
@f00l Honestly, I’m not even that good at losing. That’s why I’m here among the mediocre.
@f00l Speaking of Losers, are you familiar with these guys?

Sigh. These are my unfulfilled dreams.
@f00l Hey, I forgot to say thanks for bailing on the Yahoo pick 'em football thing- I got another gold trophy for my virtual trophy case.
@sammydog01
Yeah I had so many leagues I kept forgetting to do that one.
@joelmw
Ok those look like clubs I might aspire to join. I am a total winner at Extreme Stupidity.
(Flunked everything my Mom had planned for me.)
I’ll have to lookup that FB thing.
Thx!
@f00l You could start by subscribing to the Post. They do good work (that whole Watergate business, for instance). And now more than ever we need to support folks doing real journalism.
@joelmw
i subscribe to Wapo and NYT. I spend so much time consuming news now. sigh.

@Thumperchick
Can you add this link to the topic explanation up too?
It is a link to @jqubed’s thread on the Woot forums for a March Madness Brackets competition League on CBS Sports website.

That way people can find it much re easily.
Tho I guess time is seriously running out here for join-ups.
