Look Smart Trivia: Transit Maps
7I’m an unashamed, unabashed, unadulterated transit geek. I’d rather spend an hour taking a train than 30 minutes driving in traffic, and nothing lightens my step like getting out on the town without having to find parking, or worry about getting too drunk to drive home. Here are details from the maps of five transit systems from around the world, only one of which I personally have ever taken. Name them all before anybody else and you’ll tally a $5 Meh coupon. That should more than cover your next subway ride. Insert signoff catchphrase here!
@jrwofuga fake-rocked our Fake Bands video quiz, putting together this imaginary bill for a phantom Coachella that can never be:

- Zeno Vedast from The Ruth Rendell Mysteries

Damn, why aren’t I ever eligible for the easy ones?
I know #5 only because of an episode of 99% Invisible.
On my recent trip to Washington DC I came to the conclusion that they have the absolute worst setup for public transportation. What kind of jackass came up with a fee system that requires 3 points of data and an advanced math degree to figure out how much money to put on the pass? I may be a simple country boy from Dallas but 'round these parts our ticketing system is a simple question of “do you want to ride for a few hours or all day?”
@Moose It’s not that complicated.
The DC Metro system can get really crowded. I’d be surprised if Dallas had the same usage rates and space concerns as DC, so they don’t want people spending more time on the trains than they have to. The further out stations are mostly going to commuter lots for people who live well outside of DC proper. The city likes to charge people who commute in every day more than residents when they can.
I think a big part of it as well is to make it complicated enough that tourists will just buy the day pass regardless and help subsidize the system.
I’ve never had to use subway maps. I feel like it’s one of those things where people say it’s hard, but it’s really not. (like Ikea assembly instructions)
Bonus Question!
@Limewater
@cinoclav I’ll let you know tomorrow at 10 if you’re right.
This one’s very Googlable (Googleable?).
I’m going to wait until I’ve used my remaining prize code before trying to win again.
Good luck, all you $5 discount hounds!
@DennisG2014 Wow, I’m eligible and didn’t get a chance to look at this until now. Super fun (I love maps) and Google-able but I’ll wait it out, too… even though that means I’d have to compete against @cinoclav. Also, since I’ve never ridden any of those metro systems, I should defer to someone who has.
@cinoclav @DennisG2014 @lehigh I just remembered to check- five minutes too late.
It’s eating me up that nobody has posted the answer yet…
@eniemeyer Congrats! ( I didn’t check your work but assume it’s right.)
And just in case:
@eniemeyer Yay! I’m glad to see someone new playing along!
