Look Smart Trivia: Modern Design
5There’s a reason Midcentury Modern is still the default go-to influence for design trends: it’s great. From the 1940s to the late 1960s, across industries and continents, the interplay of new materials and techniques with the brilliance of newly empowered designers created a Golden Age that still has yet to be exhausted. If you can name all five of the designers who created these gems, you’ll score a $5 Meh coupon. If not, well, you still spent a minute looking at gorgeous design. Insert signoff catchphrase here!
Yesterday, nobody was quite able to pin down the elusive appearances of Young Dennis Hopper, so @curtw4 takes the prize with 4 of the 5 - that Naked City episode was the only one that eluded them. Solid IMDB detective work nevertheless.
- Giant
- Zane Grey Theater (also repackaged as the pilot of The Rifleman)
- The Story of Mankind
- Naked City
- The Twilight Zone

Nobody? At all?
@sammydog01 I think most people that have been actively answering are ineligible. We need more participants!
@RiotDemon @sammydog01 if there were a bunch of people sitting on these answers, I tip my cap.
@RiotDemon I meant no one got all of yesterday’s answers. I thought I did. Maybe not.
@jrwofuga I didn’t know any of them- today was tough. I’m impressed.
@sammydog01 Well, 1 and 4 were easy to google. And if you know 2 is a lemon/orange juicer, that makes it easier. 3 and 5 were just tough and required a good bit of searching.
@jrwofuga I was stuck on 3 & 5 myself but I got busy at work and didn’t have time to keep looking. I didn’t realize 2 was a juicer until I finally found the image connected to Amazon.

@cinoclav @jrwofuga That thing was my favorite of the bunch. Figures it’s something practical.
@sammydog01 Shit, you’re right, you did. I write these posts in advance because I’m on Australia time, and your answers weren’t posted yet. I’ll get that fixed. We won’t take it away from @curtw4, either. Sorry about that! Nice work!
@sammydog01 good work!
@JasonToon Aww, thanks! (To be honest I copied 2 of @curtw4’s answers.)
@cinoclav @jrwofuga @sammydog01 check out the link description and writeup on the company. Fascinating!! Form and function indeed!
@llangley is this the one where he sketched this design out on a napkin?
@JasonToon Dammit! I looked at the info for that Naked City episode but I couldn’t find enough evidence that was the show. Where did you find the video for it?
@cinoclav This is the photo I used to guess it but the only legitimate source I could find for the whole video was Amazon and they wanted $2.
@cinoclav @sammydog01 I went ahead and paid the two bucks to Amazon. Glad I did, too - his performance as a nightclub owner (and thinly veiled pimp) is bonkers.
@JasonToon @sammydog01 Damnit, now I want to watch it.
@cinoclav @JasonToon Me too but the serial killer mermaid movie is free on youtube. I’ll watch that first.
@JasonToon @sammydog01 I just discovered the first 3 seasons of Naked City are free on Amazon Prime. Watching it now!
@cinoclav Thanks for pointing that out- I missed that. Did you see the list of guest stars? Wow.
@cinoclav @sammydog01 What? Those bastards just charged me two bucks to watch that one episode!
@JasonToon @sammydog01 They figured you live in Australia, you can afford it. Great episode. Hopper has always been a wacko.
@cinoclav @JasonToon OMG his mother! That was a lot of fun- now to track down the Robert Redford episode. They wanted to charge me to watch it yesterday too but it was free last night. Weird.
@cinoclav @JasonToon @sammydog01 Well, hey, Jeff Bezos has bills to pay also.
His (ex-?) wife, e.g. Just proves any man can do stupid things, lotsa money won’t stop that. (In fact, it probably encourages it.)
