Legacy Scapegoat Lounge
4So I was thinking. We should have a special virtual lounge for the Legacy Scapegoats: currently @davegray, @Ryanell, @marklog, @studerc and @Thumperchick. Y'all can take a test spin here, if you'd like. @JonT how about we get these folks comfy smoking jackets and the alcoholic beverage of their choice? Maybe start some nice music (we'll let them pick the genre). Someone give the legacies a massage. Etc. You get the idea.
More meaningfully, how about giving them some sort of admin dispensation within this space?
I'm reminded of this bit from SNL: Five Timers
Since there are five of you, we could even name it Fivers. See how nicely that works? Of course I think we should make it a general perk of retiring scapegoats, but still leave the name to honor y'all.
Just a thought.
Fellow Mehricans, let's please respect our esteemed former scapegoats by reserving their exclusive right for primary comments on this thread.

Grubbing for votes I see . . .
@bluedyn I'm merely proposing a long-overdue perk for our esteemed community leaders.
@bluedyn I hesitated to post this picture, because I thought it might lose me votes. But that was obviously wrong of me (if it does lose me votes, sobeit). :-)
@joelmw Nasty. And yes, I could take my vote away from you.
@bluedyn
This lounge is a farce and a mockery of the goat.
@TaRDy
@JonT Could we get someone in here to clean out the trash? These kids have no respect.
@TaRDy If you'll recall (not that I expect you to have been paying attention), this was Wonka just before he revealed to Charlie that he'd won big. So you're conceding? I'm willing to set aside our differences and accept. Thanks even. I always knew you had it in you.
@joelmw this time you just lose and are sent down the bad egg chute, differences are in the middle of us still
@TaRDy Claims of "mockery" and "farce" from the person who has twice now declared himself goat and soiled two threads dedicated to the true scapegoats of meh. Sigh. It's just sad really.
@joelmw the kind of a mischief a real goat would partake in...if it bothers you that much, feel free to blame me tomorrow. Until then, @Thumperchick is the one we should be blaming.
@TaRDy I'll agree with you on one point. Damnit, @Thumperchick, how could you let this happen?
@joelmw laziness. Pure, unadulturated laziness.
@Thumperchick Come midnight, all will be forgiven. But I felt like we were neglecting you. Which, actually, you're not legacy, so, technically this place isn't yet to honor you. Hmmm, hadn't thought of it that way.
I am in favor. I think we special people should also have special rights and favors that others don't have. This will make us feel good and will ensure that the others have something to envy and strive for.
@davegray You're welcome. :-)
The reward for not being goat anymore is not having your email clogged up and not having to apologize to everyone for everything.
That's enough.
Being the goat is not an honor. It's a dis-honor.
Someone deserves it because they did something weird or crappy or too good and need to be dumped on a bit. If you want blame, you are getting a reward. That is not the purpose of scapegoathood.
That seems to have been lost somewhere along the way.
@ceagee Yes! Self nominations should be disqualified.
@bluedyn I second the motion. All in favor star this.
@ceagee @bluedyn The scapegoat has long been an ambiguous role, both honorable and dishonorable. In the Jewish mythology, the scapegoat--while obviously a token of rejection and the embodiment of all that is unclean--becomes in the Prophets a type of the Messiah. Followers of Jesus of Nazareth took this and ran with it. Say what you want about either religious tradition (the veracity of their claims and the validity of their faith really isn't the issue), in Western society, those are the primary roots.
@ceagee @bluedyn Moreover the office is clearly a sick sort of community representative and liaison here at meh. Perverse, yes, but perversion is one of our core values, as far as I can tell.
@ceagee @bluedyn Not to over-analyze it. ;-)
@ceagee @bluedyn All that being said, I starred your suggestion against self-nomination; though one could contend that my doing so is self-serving, and I'm a little ambivalent about it.
@joelmw @ceagee @bluedyn And let me be clear about this (in case that's not your tradition or it is and you somehow never picked up on this), in Christianity, Jesus is the scapegoat. The cross itself, while it's become a sort of popular talisman is also clearly identified as a curse. So again, the point is that the thing is clearly ambiguous in terms of it being good/evil, honorable/dishonorable.
@ceagee @bluedyn Further still, this idea is seen throughout Western art and literature and even in contemporary media such as TV and film.
Holy fuck, @joelmw, this has got to be killing your chances for being November's goat.
Just let it be, other @joelmw. Que sera sera and shit like that.
@joelmw
@joelmw So basically you are saying you are a pervert and messiah rolled into one ?
@ceagee LLOL. Well, I aspire to be messianic; I won't pretend I don't have those delusional aspirations (in my defense, I don't think they're that unusual). I'll definitely own pervert. Though I think I could up my game there too. :-)
@ceagee It's certainly proper to say that I aspire to be pervert/messiah. I wouldn't have grasped at such a thing, but once @bluedyn opened the door (maybe an argument for her being goat?), the prize became irresistible. Why do I feel like I'm in confession/therapy here. Never been Catholic, btw, though I did lust after Catholicism for a time in my youth. But that's a whole other story and you know how assiduously I eschew tangential ranting. ;-)
@bluedyn @ceagee I like the idea, although way back when this whole thing was first getting started, @JonT asked people to self-nominate. Instead @bluedog decided that @marklog deserved it and @capguncowboy seconded the nomination, adding that he felt @marklog shouldn't have a choice, and most of the community seemed to agree: https://meh.com/forum/topics/the-august-scapegoat-of-the-month---curse-ryaneil-no-more
@jqubed leave me out of this!
@jqubed True, it was started that way but I think perhaps @JonT got it wrong. We have only gone w/ community nominated goats. I think it should stay that way. @thumperchick wrote in that same August topic : I think the community/staff should nominate someone every month. Being the scapegoat should be infamous, not volunteered for. ;)
@ceagee I agree @thumperchick had the right idea. which means people shouldn't write campaign speeches, they should be roasted. or slandered at the very least.
@ceagee I stand by that. I don't tend to vote for self-nominated goats. I also don't think that we need to make it a rule. Our community will choose to vote or not vote for them.
@bluedyn That's the usual nomination method, though. This is being done because next week is the mid-term elections, nationwide. @JonT just spiced it up to highlight that. (I am hoping that the campaigning for goathood stops after this, though. It is a bit daunting to read through paragraphs of bullshit that don't really change my mind.
@Thumperchick They were some needlessly long-ass speeches. And they aren't really in the spirit of the scapegoat title. But yes, you're right that it's seasonally apt. I'd missed that point. But I do think there's been self-nomination and small-scale campaigning mixed in with the slanderous nominations every month. Which keeps it interesting, if they'd keep it short.
I like purple.
@Barney Is it too late to change my scapevote?
@bluedyn Damn. More about my being longwinded. ;-) Look, I'm lazy. I'd have prefered to have not done a damn thing. I was honored by the nomination, don't get me wrong, but I didn't expect to be asked to outright campaign. But then when we were basically instructed to do so and it was implied we should talk a little trash, I didn't want to be that guy who refused to play along. Then folks jumped on it and I felt even more called out. In retrospect, I'd handle it all differently, but, fuck, I knew nothing and was just trying to play my part.
@bluedyn TL;DR? This is clearly @cengland0's fault.
@jqubed : Being scapegoat should be an honor (dishonor?) bestowed, not an honor pursued. No campaigning, no self nominating. When I nominated @marklog, I truly believed (and still do) that he had made a supremely goat-worthy contribution to the community.
@bluedog +1. @marklog set the precedents of what a true scapegoat should be. With this nascent view of actually being pleasured to be scapegoat is ridiculous, and should be changed. If not, then that type of leader isn't a scapegoat, but rather a president of some sort. Down with the self nominees.
Suck up.
@Thumperchick A little. I do genuinely like the idea though.
Don't be so hard on yourself, @joelmw, it was all in fun.
@Thumperchick I feel the need to point out that for all of the dialog with myself, I'm definitely not this guy. Mostly because he's a cyborg and shit. And, yeah, a cartoon.
@joelmw Whatever you say, other Barry.
@Thumperchick
Wow... Seriously... Y'all take this way too seriously.
Seriously, lighten up. #C0C0C0 (It's not all black & white.)
I blame @Thumperchick because, just one more time.
Then somebody else.
@bluedyn @ceagee @Thumperchick
I get where all of you are coming from. The idea of the Scapegoat kind of sprung up organically and it seemed like something fun to do on the forums, especially for Day 1. Since people really enjoyed it I wanted to keep it going and find some more interesting/fun ways for someone to become the new scapegoat. The idea of the scapegoat is still evolving and can totally change as time goes on. It's possible that we eventually won't even have a scapegoat if it's not fun and interesting to do anymore (but I have a feeling that things will always go wrong, and would rather a scapegoat be blamed instead of me).
Our community is still very young and I'm totally interested in working with y'all to shape the direction we're going in, but I reserve the right to adjust course if we start going off the rails. :P
@joelmw
I like the idea of doing more with past and current Scapegoats, though I would probably lean more towards 'anti-perks' more than privileges. It's just a matter of making sure the goats still have fun and aren't just annoyed.
@JonT Aw, but it's so much fun to go off the rails. And I think we've shown that we're good at it.
@JonT yes please thank you.
@JonT Oh man, anti-privileges sound hilarious! Imagine every time you try to post a gif, you get a goat gif instead.
@JonT Maybe during the switchover at the end of every month-- that time before the goat icon has been switched over, but the previous goat is done -- It could be a free for all. All the former goats get blamed. IOW, 12 hours of goat mayhem.
So you are saying that we are early in the evolution of the goat

@ceagee
@ceagee All you need is the image url. No tags.
@Thumperchick I put it in that way( just cut and pasted url}, but something went terribly wrong. Thank you for fixing it for me. I was too late to edit by the time I saw it and then I just threw up my hands.
@ceagee weird, it is just the url in your comment but it works for @Thumperchick. Must be latent goat powers. We'll take a look and see what's up.
@JonT This is what it looks like to me
Bad news for goats in New York:
http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2014/11/04/goat-heads-found-hanging-from-telephone-pole-in-park-slope/
@heartny
@heartny Time to saddle up.
@heartny On the plus side, they were probably halal and apparently make good soup. On the other hand, the report says a couple of times, "you can see," when, thanks to deliberate pixelation, we cannot. WTF? indeed.
It's great being an ex, but I'm still waiting for my comfy slippers and custom icon.
Where's @ceagee?
@Joelmw Can us plebeians at least look in the window at the festivities?
@dis_member LLOL. Well, so far it's just another one of my delusions, so you're welcome to look as much as you'd like.
