KoolHandJoe’s Spring Monsterfy This Challenge: Build-A-Scare Edition
28Spring is considered a time for renewal and transformation… What better time to have another Monsterfy This Challenge!
This time of year I look around and see store shelves full of stuffed animals and plushies… they are all so cute… I can not stand for that!.. We need to do something about all this spring cuteness!
Let’s turn the tables and transform some stuffed animals and plushies into Monsterfied Art!!!
Let’s Build-A-Scare!!!
THE CHALLENGE:
Monsterfy a Stuffed Animal
You are free to make it from any type of stuffed animal. It does not have to be a teddy bear.
TIMELINE:
The Challenge begins now.
On Friday April 22nd a Reveal Thread will be posted.
Challenge ends at 11:59pm on Thursday April 28th and all submissions need to be posted to the Reveal Thread by then.
KoolHandJoe will personally judge and select 3 Winners on Friday April 29th 2022.
THE RULES:
Only 1 entry per person.
Your creepy creation must be made from a stuffed animal toy… no real animals that have been through the taxidermy process.
There is no spend limit on this one… but remember I am looking for creativity and originality… sometimes doing more with less yields more creative and original results.
The Challenge is open to anyone except Mercatalyst employees. Previous challenge winners are welcome to submit but NOT eligible to win.
All submissions must be added to the reveal thread. The reveal thread will be created on Friday April 22nd 2022.
If you get stuck or need advice on how to do a certain thing I will gladly offer help in this thread so everyone can benefit from it… others are welcome to offer ideas as well.
Posting ideas and updates encouraged in this thread.
THE PRIZE:
3 Winners will receive an IRK.
All 3 IRK boxes will contain items curated personally by KoolHandJoe and will contain an original KoolHandJoe creation.

This is going to be so awesome! Cannot wait to see the entries.
HIKING! VIKINGS! STRIKE KING [BRAND FISHING LURES]! AWESOME!
@cbilyak i am looking forward to this one too… so many possibilities
I will almost definitely not be able to participate, but will post my beautiful, terrifying koolhandjoe teddy bear that I got in an IRK last year for inspiration. Also to show off!
All right, a reason to go to Salvation Army!
I have an idear. Or two. Now I need materials.
@PocketBrain Can’t wait to it
Oh, man. Time to eat some spicy food late at night to have some bad dreams for inspiration!
@djslack Nothing like a late night burrito induced nightmare to get the creative juices flowing
@koolhandjoe can I confirm no using animal fur? Only synthetics?
@funsyd … this is an interesting ask… i am going to say… if just the fur, i will allow it… but if it is a pelt (skin with fur attached) i think that should be considered too close to taxidermy for this challenge… had to think about that for a while… great question btw
@funsyd @Koolhandjoe I…think it may be very hard to do fur without the skin attached.
@funsyd @Koolhandjoe Wait, does this mean we could use human hair?
@brainmist @funsyd @Koolhandjoe
I did for mine, in the first Halloween-themed challenge!
@funsyd @Koolhandjoe @Kyeh NOICE!
@brainmist @funsyd @Koolhandjoe
Thanks!
@brainmist @Koolhandjoe @Kyeh
Ugh if I found that in the garden I’d burn it down. Very nice!
@brainmist @funsyd @Koolhandjoe
Thanks. I ended up hanging it in a corner of my pantry where the window faces towards my least-liked neighbor.
@brainmist @Koolhandjoe @Kyeh
It definitely looks like a cursed thing for keeping nasty neighbor’s away.
@koolhandjoe and all:
So I have grandma’s furs. All lined with material like silk. If I pull apart I am sure hide is there somewhere. I do have one that is so old some fur is just naturally detaching and could use. Please rule for me. Pics attached.
@funsyd For this… it was an article of clothing… not an animal that has been through the taxidermy process… I will say it can be used… but keep in mind the first part of the 2nd listed rule: “Your creepy creation must be made from a stuffed animal toy”… I am curious to see where this is going.
@Koolhandjoe thanks and understood. Have you ever seen a Rhodesian Ridgeback?
@funsyd My brother and his wife have them
@funsyd Euw, the ones that are still mink-shaped - do they have that clip that makes them bite their own tails?
@Kyeh ugh they creep me out but I’ll take a better picture for you. Their little feet are terrifying.
@funsyd @Kyeh
Oh no… not Grandma’s furs! I too have a closet full of my grandmother’s fur coats, throws/capes and stoles that I’ve never been able to part with. Not sure I could cut them up either though. I’m excited to see what you do!
How awesome and sick this is at the same time. Didn’t know I’d have such a hard time mutilating a stuffed animal, but maybe that’s a good thing.
PANS! GLANDS! CRAYONS! AWESOME!
Thanks for the extended entry time for us procrastinators. Maybe I’ll start tomorrow. (Probably not though).
@sammydog01 Ditto. I am clueless at this point. Was going to go trolling the Goodwill for ideas this week but well……
@speediedelivery I’m super short on creativity but am decent at copying things. I don’t expect to win but have a ton of fun crafting and need some incentive. Goodwill should be full of cheap stuffed animals. Maybe you’ll luck out and find a skull or something. I think I have a baby head with empty eye sockets left over from cat-baby. Hmmm…
@sammydog01 @speediedelivery
I had no idea what I was gonna do until I went to the thrift store yesterday. Then inspiration struct when I was looking through the massive pile of stuffed animals. I’m hosting Easter at my house and have to take my dad to the hospital twice for his scans to find out if the cancer has spread and a dr app next week. I’m sure I’ll be a last minute entry, hopefully.
@sammydog01 @Star2236 Isn’t imitation flattery or something If I manage to do something it will be a poor copy of something else. I play for fun. No talent on the creative side but I have other things I can do.
@sammydog01 @speediedelivery @Star2236 One of these days I am going to find my talent – any kind of talent and I will be happy.
@Barney @speediedelivery @Star2236 I went to the craft store and bought clay. No idea what to do with it but I have ten pounds.
@sammydog01 @speediedelivery @Star2236 I haven’t graduated from Play-Doh.
@Barney @sammydog01 I have some play-doh. I wonder if it is still good.
Also remembered that I tossed two small toys a couple weeks ago that I could have dismembered or something. At least practiced with them first. I had a few days of spring sorting/cleaning. Now I am going crazy looking for a particular small box that I want. Now. Keep in mind I mostly rearranged. I got rid of about two carloads but there is still way too much stuff.
@Barney @sammydog01 @speediedelivery
I’ve gotten rid of a house full and I still have a basement full of shit.
@sammydog01 @speediedelivery @Star2236 I have no basement to fill with shit, but I am still looking for my living room. I know it’s somewhere under all this crap.
@Barney @sammydog01 @speediedelivery @Star2236 Sounds like mine.
@Barney @Kyeh @speediedelivery @Star2236 I need to clean out my bonus room to store all the Crocs I found in the back of my closet.
Happy Easter to all,
@KoolHandJoe style
@lonocat that is terrific
I haven’t a creative bone in my body… but this has me contemplating a trip to goodwill. Or a search thru the kids old stuffies they never look at anymore.
@jnicholson0619 Go for it… you would be surprised what you can come up with
@kyeh I got into the basement today and remembered your question on the mink mouths. They appear sewn together, pics follow plus bonus creepy foot.
@funsyd Euwwwww - they’re practically monsterfied already! Thanks for the pictures; very creepy indeed. I always hated seeing them when I was a kid - I couldn’t understand how those ladies could wear them!
@Kyeh I know and why I’ve kept them is beyond me. Because they were animals and to throw them away would be disrespectful? But I do have a line on a lady who will make me a teddy from one of her stoles. I think I’ll like that?
@funsyd I agree that it seems kind of awful to throw them away. Maybe someone could modify them to be more like regular stuffed animals and not so scary looking! It does seem like something good could be made from old furs.
SO excited to see the reveals starting tomorrow!! I am slammed at work and have had no time for my kids let alone a monster project, so doubly excited to see what you all have been working on.
To all my fellow crafters of creep, builders of the bizarre, denizens of destruction, architects of abnormal, developers of the demented and makers of the macabre…
