I think they hire ninja to come to your house, just in case you violate the rules.
@fuzzmanmatt Likewise for me, probably - but I was commenting on the image that mediocrebot gave you.
I always think that getting something new will change my habits - now I’ll actually use the mixer!" Yeah, we’ll see …
@fuzzmanmatt@Kyeh Really? We use our vacuum jar lid sealer all the time. It works very well for things that are crushable/soft and for which you are going to only refrigerate for a moderately short time, e.g. avocados, which will not turn brown under vacuum, some cheeses which will not mold under vacuum, soft, raw things like strawberries, part of a cut cucumber, etc.
You get the idea.
You just have to have invested in a few wide mouth Mason jars (a few quarts and a couple of pint sizes) and the lids. All of which are completely washable/reusable over and over and over again.
This is supposed to be better than the old slicer-mangler attachment. That one had stamped chome-plated sheet metal cones whose teeth were about as sharp as cream cheese, and a plastic housing that tended to split at the back. This attachment is a complete redesign. But it’s still not as good as the ancient cast-aluminum disc-type slicer/shredder - if you can find one.
@werehatrack I agree; most of the attachments were made of metal (50 years ago), now they are 95% plastic. That said, I have the meat grinder and it works okay. My mom had a metal one (along with a wooden pusher) but that disappeared long ago…
I actually have a KitchenAid from the early 70’s maybe? It was state of the art at the time. I think the motor brushes probably need replacing. Good luck with that. But I keep it because it was my Mother’s. This device will not work on it, but I know my Niece has a newer one. She probably already has this. I guess she is getting more?
@Mandamm If it’s an actual KitchenAid stand mixer, this attachment will fit units all the way back to the 1950s at least. I’ve been using them since the very early '60s, and the drive setup hasn’t changed in all that time.
Since this is something that’s an attachment for something bigger that’s not attached and is not attached to me, will you attach the actual bigger thingy in my next IRK? If you promise to do so, I will attach this to my list of bought items from Meh.
(See attachment below.)
@funwithfeces@IndifferentDude Yes we had one too. Made milkshakes. Mom never figured out where the ice cream went with no bowls in the sink (we washed the blender to hide our crime).
@funwithfeces@IndifferentDude@Kidsandliz
Yeah… I got that. My point was why not just eat out of bowls (and wash them) instead of making milkshakes if you were afraid of getting caught?
@Kidsandliz
OK,… NOW I understand. Thought you just were making milkshakes to avoid using the bowls. I missed that connection. D’oh! Sometimes I can be very dense!
@Kyeh
I can’t think of that little cutie pie’s name, the one in that Giphy, from the TV show Full House but we’ve been watching her every week on the new show called “Beyond the Edge”. It’s a reality show where they live in the jungle, do challenges, and win money for charities of their choosing. It’s on right after Survivor and it kind of reminds me of survivor in a way too.
She’s all grown up and looking very much like her childhood self. I got excited when I saw that Giphy, I hadn’t seen her as a child in a very long time!
Lol, my brain must be getting fried! These things shouldn’t excite me like this and when they do I SHOULD know better and just keep my mouth shut!!
In for one. I’ve wanted some attachments for the wife’s mixer. Not sure how well the meat grinder is. I have my butcher grind a mix of meats for some insane burgers. Guess I’ll give it a try at home. He. Do the grind for free so no savings but now I can experiment on new mixes
@bugger as noted, the meat grinder is not included here but here’s a tangent about it: It does pretty well for the amount of space it takes up compared to a dedicated meat grinder. Put it in the freezer for a few hours before running your meat through for the best result. It is slow going, though, and unless you’re very patient you’re not going to want to process more than a couple of pounds of meat at a time.
The meat grinder is also a sausage stuffer. It works just fine for all-meat sausages but mangled the rice a bit too much for my liking when I used it to make boudin.
The best part about grinding your own burger meat is controlling how much fat and lean meat (or whatever other goodies you want) goes in, but if you have a butcher who hooks you up that’s certainly less trouble.
If you’re grinding meat for burgers you will cook immediately, go ahead and salt and pepper the cubed meat before you grind it and that seasoning will go all through the meat. Don’t add salt if you’re going to store the meat, though, as it will kill the texture given time to work on the meat.
@bugger@djslack As a kid growing up we had our own hand crank grinder you’d clamp to the table with various sized hole attachments you’d put on it. Mom would have us crank it and as kids we’d be fascinated watching these thin strings of ground up meat coming out. I ended up with my grandmother’s one. I never used it and no one in the family wanted it so I sold it to someone who hunted deer and wanted it for that. Worked well. Those of you in love with this idea but don’t have the right kind of mixer - hunt for one of those.
@bugger@djslack@Kidsandliz this is still what my mom uses to make cranberry relish at thanksgiving; complete with bowl set underneath crank because it’s never water-tight!
@bugger@djslack@Kidsandliz we had one of those hand meat grinders when i was growing up, too. About 25 years ago, i ran across an exact copy at, I think, Harbor Freight or Northern Tool, for $10. I jumped on the deal, because i was big into making hamburger jerky back then.
I still have that meat grinder, and it still works well. We get our meat from a local locker, a quarter of a beef at a time. Wife doesn’t really like steaks, so i sometimes end up grinding them into burger. Sacrilege, i know, but it makes for some wonderful burgers!
The key to making those hand grinders last is that you need to hand-wash them immediately, and then make sure they are completely dry; otherwise, they can start rusting immediately.
A quick websearch shows they are around $30 now at places like Scheels. They seem overpriced on Amazon.
@djslack@remo28@StrawHousePig ok so now it all makes sense. It is all a plot to get murders to buy one of those mixers to go with the grinder and knives…

and tomorrow they will sell the mixer.
I cannot speak for the quality of the set of attachments being offered here, but we have one such set. It isn’t worth a bucket of excrement (warm or cold).
Our set is anything but sharp, as in having keen edges on the cutting surfaces. That is the way it came out of the box. Must have been a dull day in China when ours was made, or maybe they were made on the night shift on a Friday night.
My fault for not packing it up and returning it to Bezos, but alas, I dilly dallyed too long and the return period expired before I could send it on its way.
Even if all of the various drums were sharp, it is just too damn much trouble to use, and then to clean. Our venerable KitchenAid stand mixer sits on the counter so that is not the issue. I use it a lot for baking and various other cooking tasks.
However, dragging the attachments out (assuming you have the storage space and know where they are), is a chore. And even. if they worked well, it means that one also has to have whatever you are going to put through it prepared ahead of time (i.e., peeled, if necessary, and cut to suitable size to cram down the chute), as well as getting a suitable receiving bowl in place.
The attachments sit high on the mixer and one really needs a lab type jack stand under the bowl to bring the bowl closer to the exit of the drum. Yes, we have just such a jack stand, but it is one more thing to locate, drag out and place, etc.
Stuff invariably goes where you don’t want it, which means that not only does one end up cleaning the attachment, but the machine as well as the counter.
For small quantities a box grater often works better and is far quicker. A food processor will also do many of the same job of making little ones out of big ones.
I would be very interested to hear comments from those who purchase and then use these gadgets as to whether they think they got their money’s worth out of them.
@Jackinga we’ve got the Geedel rotary cheese grater ($25 on Amazon today). Yes, it’s a hand-crank model, but works well for us. The suction cup base sticks very well. We mainly use the small grater for hard cheeses (American Grana is one of our favorite hard cheeses, especially for Chicken Pizzaiola!), and the slicer for cucumbers or carrots. Haven’t tried the big grater yet… maybe i’ll try making some hash browns out of potatoes with that one.
I see the Big A has this KitchenAid set for $37, and what looks like a generic knockoff for $27.
@Jackinga Great analysis- for the quantities & cookery I do, a box grater is sufficient. And I also have a little plastic manual grater thingy ($2) for the 1-2 times a year when I need to shred cheese. It also has 3 interchangeable drums, which are sharp enough to cut the cheese…
@Jackinga Does yours have the conical all-metal drums? Even brand new, those were as dull as watching canned goods age in the dark. I’ve had sharper mozzarella. These are supposed to be sharper, but the plastic flanges on the drums do not fill me with confidence about their durability.
@Jackinga I purchased mine a few months back straight from Kitchenaid, and refurbished. And I have to say, for me they’ve been extremely useful. But I have to admit I’ve only grated cheese and then sliced some vegetables with it, it’s not a heavy use attachment for me personally and the way I cook.
I have weak hands/wrists from an old injury and grating a block of cheese on a box grater basically is asking for me to not use my hand the entire next day. With this, I just have to chop it into a couple pieces before I feed it through and I have as much delicious grated cheese as I might want. I also go through cheese fast enough that I don’t grate it for individual dishes/recipes but just do the whole block at once.
I have had to experiment with where to place the “catch” bowl to keep the counter clean, I’ve actually found using a plate works better than a bowl somehow, must just be surface area. But you are right, it can still manage to fling some pieces out so you do have to tidy up a little after, even with the plate. But I haven’t found that it makes more mess than I do when I’m hand grating, it could be that I’m just messy.
When I sliced up some carrots, it was a little difficult to get the carrot juice/orange stain off of the main unit (the large white part that actually attaches to the mixer) but a bottle brush did the trick. A short soak in warm, soapy water seems work for the other pieces, but they’re no harder or easier to wash than any other grater really.
Generally though, I wouldn’t categorize these as a “must buy” or anything. I love them, I’ve used them quite a bit more than I expected, and they’ve made my meal prep a lot easier in ways that I appreciate. But if you’ve got a box grater and/or a mandolin that you use regularly and that you’re happy with, these aren’t going to blow you away with how amazing they are. If you don’t like how long it takes to grate cheese or you have issues with your hands, it really could be useful for you.
Tune in next time when I talk too much about the pasta dough roller.
@DonBirren Ha! You made me laugh with that one! Naturally the first thing one tries with any gadget is to vary the speed setting. So, yes, I used every speed possible. No joy.
@Jackinga For those who bought this KitchenAid accessory, you might find this lab jack useful. Put the receiving bowl or plate on the jack and raise it to the appropriate level to catch the cuttings. This will reduce splatter and clean up by a great deal
I have a kitchenaid, but I also have a little hand grinder with the same attachments and usually a lot less trouble to pull out and use and clean. And good quality cutters also, still sharp after many years …
@Springbank I use my hand-cranked grain mill to make peanut butter. It works amazingly well. I don’t recall seeing a grain mill attachment for a KitchenAid before, now I might have to go see if I can find one.
@Springbank@werehatrack I got an e-mail from Kitchen Aid yesterday about an attachment sale. I browsed through it and the grain mill was there. Since I wasn’t buying it I didn’t compare prices, but all their attachements are on sale now. But this one here was still less than the KA site sale price. The mill is $125 on sale. I was looking at the sifter/scale combo, but not at over $100. I already own an electric scale and a hand held sifter.
@Springbank@werehatrack I use my Corona grain mill to crush grains for brewing beer. It was originally hand cranked, but I modified it so I can drive it with an electric drill. I also added a hopper (fashioned from an inverted plastic 5-gallon water cooler bottle) to the top so I can grind the required 6-10 pounds of grain in one operation. Works quite well.
@Springbank@werehatrack When I first got the Corona mill (back in the days leading up to Y2K ), I tried grinding some wheat berries to make bread, but it seemed like a lot of work and the results were fairly meh. So mine has been pretty much relegated to beer making (still a worthy cause!).
@macromeh@werehatrack I got this when my wife bought some odd type of wheat expecting me to make it into bread. About then I went on a keto diet.
I used a Corona when I started brewing, then got a roller mill when I went all grain. I pretty much quit when I’d come home and find that my son and his buddies had drunk all the beer. Still have all the gear.
@erthian@mediocrebot I think that was a workplace poster put out by FedEx Ground. A lot of their drivers used to be “independent contractors” who were not issued uniforms. I think that still may be true, although around here most of them seem to at least have a FedEx polo shirt now.
I’ve been looking for a reason to get rid of the gigantic food processor I haven’t used in years. And I’m pretty damn sure I can get this attachment to make margaritas if I try hard enough…
geez, the first time you sell something in a while that I would actually pay money for and it is gone before 1000. I don’t know the last time I bought something here, but I check daily. Oh well, move along people, nothing to see here.
@Ecriscit@Kidsandliz For VMP values of “you”, possibly also assuming you’re IRK-fast on the Buy button. The last paused item went to full sellout at 4:01.
Stoked to mess around with this to make a mess. I use the spiralizer from time to time and the pasta roller often. The mill is high on my list of wanted attachments.
Crap, I just purchased this last night for $10 more, cancelled the order because it’s currently on Amazon for $49, making it not worth the hassle and wait, and now I see it here for only $29, but sold out.
@eq52515@lonocat I think there’s a good chance that any reports that this doesn’t fit a KitchenAid are from people who do not actually have a KitchenAid-brand stand mixer. Sadly, some people apparently think that the cheap Asian-made imitations are KitchenAids, which they emphatically are not. The deceptive, misleading, outright lying assholes who sell crapola on Wish (and other sites) have been contributing to the problem whenever they get a chance, and the various cooking shows have had more than one instance of somebody calling the stand mixer a KitchenAid when it wasn’t. It’s next to impossible for Whirlpool to stomp all of those after the fact, and by then it’s already too late to keep the public from using “kitchenaid” as a generic term for a big stand mixer. Hell, I had a family member who called her Mixmaster a “kitchenaid” back in the '80s, so this is NOT a new problem.
Also, there are people so mechanically inept that they fail to comprehend the need to undo the little thumbscrew on the side before pushing the drive spud into place, and they expect the square drive to line up with the socket all by itself. For that, I blame all of the manufacturers who have relentlessly black-boxed everything they make, so that now there’s almost no one in the general public who understands more than “This is a Phillips screwdriver, and that is an Ikea key.” (Yeah, they really do think it’s called an Ikea key.)
@jaroberts24 With upwards of 50,000 people hitting the site, it doesn’t take much of a hit rate to sell out a really popular item that’s listed at a good price.
@goldnectar@Kyeh@lichen@mediocrebot how do I know if I have a V badge or a Heart badge? I’ve been meaning to buy this specific attachment to deal with zucchini in our CSA box so very much hoping I can buy it!!!
Edit: dang it, looks like I just have the heart badge :‘( :’(
What is VMP?
VMP was the name of a previous membership program we offered. Current VMP members can continue their benefits - as long as they maintain membership. Since we’re closed to new VMP memberships, any cancelations are final, and there is no way to rejoin.
Gaaaah tried to order but rec’d no confirmation (nor sorry, “sold out while you were updating your CC expiration date”) so I guess it’s back to hemming and hawing over it at W-S every time it goes on sale.
@ampersandranch It’s reportedly on sale at Am**on for $49 at the moment. I’d wait for an even better price, honestly. Or see if you can find one of the older disc-type units; they work a lot better in my experience.
@dl1589@lichen It can show up on a refresh as not sold out yet when there are already enough transactions in progress to eat the entire batch, so the fact that it didn’t go to “sold out” on that second refresh doesn’t mean that it was really still up for grabs. It just means that when the page request was filled by the web server, the database flag hadn’t been flipped yet; latency is a four-letter word.
This never gets used. It is too much trouble to set up, use, take apart and CLEAN! If you value your time, and know how to use a box grater, and a Chef’s knife, you only need this if you are feeding an Army!
My package is apparently stuck in a black hole named Olathe, KS (it’s pronounced like it has an a on the end if anyone is curious, why IDFK, they also pronounce Miami with an a sound on the end in KS and in OK). But apparently my package is just bouncing around up there in Olathe.
@Kyeh tornado was near Wichita, Olathe is S of Kansas City. So it’s at least 2 hrs east of Wichita. I live about 1.5 hrs from Olathe. Now it’s possible it was slowed down since Perry, OK is N of OKC, and may have driven through Wichita. But it looks weird, because it acts like the package was scanned every 12 hours. I’ve never seen a package update repeatedly that it was still in transit. So it just looks strange. I do have a delivery date now though, so that’s a step forward. It says tomorrow, we will see. It usually stops in Parsons, KS before it goes out for delivery with FedEx, so I won’t hold my breath.

@Jackinga It’s possible you’ve set the speed too fast. These are meant to be used at speed setting 4.
Amazon ~$17
I have a kitchenaid, but I also have a little hand grinder with the same attachments and usually a lot less trouble to pull out and use and clean. And good quality cutters also, still sharp after many years …
Any idea of the diameter of the feed tube? Looks pretty small. This would look good next to the grain mill attachment that I’ve never used.
@Springbank I use my hand-cranked grain mill to make peanut butter. It works amazingly well. I don’t recall seeing a grain mill attachment for a KitchenAid before, now I might have to go see if I can find one.
@Springbank @werehatrack I got an e-mail from Kitchen Aid yesterday about an attachment sale.
@Springbank @werehatrack I use my Corona grain mill to crush grains for brewing beer. It was originally hand cranked, but I modified it so I can drive it with an electric drill. I also added a hopper (fashioned from an inverted plastic 5-gallon water cooler bottle) to the top so I can grind the required 6-10 pounds of grain in one operation. Works quite well.
@macromeh @Springbank I use my Corona to make peanut butter and almond butter. I need to try it out for grinding chickpeas to make falafel.
@Springbank @werehatrack When I first got the Corona mill (back in the days leading up to Y2K ), I tried grinding some wheat berries to make bread, but it seemed like a lot of work and the results were fairly meh. So mine has been pretty much relegated to beer making (still a worthy cause!).
@macromeh @werehatrack I got this when my wife bought some odd type of wheat expecting me to make it into bread. About then I went on a keto diet.
I used a Corona when I started brewing, then got a roller mill when I went all grain. I pretty much quit when I’d come home and find that my son and his buddies had drunk all the beer. Still have all the gear.
For the sister!

@erthian @mediocrebot Mediocrebot keeps tossing out text images for the buy command
@erthian @mediocrebot I think that was a workplace poster put out by FedEx Ground. A lot of their drivers used to be “independent contractors” who were not issued uniforms. I think that still may be true, although around here most of them seem to at least have a FedEx polo shirt now.

geez, the first time you sell something in a while that I would actually pay money for and it is gone before 1000. I don’t know the last time I bought something here, but I check daily. Oh well, move along people, nothing to see here.
@Ecriscit same
@Ecriscit Deal is paused until 4pm. You can buy one then.
@Ecriscit @Kidsandliz For VMP values of “you”, possibly also assuming you’re IRK-fast on the Buy button. The last paused item went to full sellout at 4:01.
Stoked to mess around with this to make a mess. I use the spiralizer from time to time and the pasta roller often. The mill is high on my list of wanted attachments.

@adj16 Sorry, the

command is only available to members. Learn more.@mediocrebot well fine then
@adj16 It will back for sale at 4pm. Says deal paused until then.
@adj16 @Kidsandliz At 4PM the deal will resume for VMP members only. The rest of us are hosed.
@Kidsandliz @werehatrack
@adj16 @werehatrack Well I didn’t read beyond deal paused… Sorry about that.
Should I be pissed over just purchasing this last week for $10 more? On sidedeal I might add…
@amehzinggrace Since they just went to VMPause, probably not.
@werehatrack well I am VMP…so yeah…hosed
Crap, I just purchased this last night for $10 more, cancelled the order because it’s currently on Amazon for $49, making it not worth the hassle and wait, and now I see it here for only $29, but sold out.
Wondering if this will fit the Cuisinart mixer I got in a past IRK?
@eq52515
@lonocat The reviews I read have been seeing conflicting answers. Some yes, some no.
@lonocat I was just curious, already bought one. Just dunno if it will be a gift to MiL yet.
/giphy locked-vanilla-month
@eq52515 @lonocat I think there’s a good chance that any reports that this doesn’t fit a KitchenAid are from people who do not actually have a KitchenAid-brand stand mixer.
Sold out already? What, did the people who scalp stuff at Ticketmaster make their way over here?
@jaroberts24 No, just paused until 1600 Eastern Time.
@eq52515 @jaroberts24 Paused until then for us VMPs. Regular members and ex-VMPs are out of luck.
@jaroberts24 With upwards of 50,000 people hitting the site, it doesn’t take much of a hit rate to sell out a really popular item that’s listed at a good price.

@edsa We’re sold out except for a small amount we set aside for existing VMP members to be released at 4pm ET.
I typed that magic thing in. What is supposed to happen? Setting alarm for 3:55 pm.
@edsa At 4 EDT, the remaining few will become available to the VMP members only.
Thanks! Just thought I’d try it out to see what happened.
Damn it! Something useful that I actually wanted?!? I wasn’t expecting that. Of course, sold out.

VMP only, with the “V” badge, sorry…not mere members with “heart” badges.
@goldnectar @Kyeh @lichen @mediocrebot how do I know if I have a V badge or a Heart badge? I’ve been meaning to buy this specific attachment to deal with zucchini in our CSA box so very much hoping I can buy it!!!
Edit: dang it, looks like I just have the heart badge :‘( :’(
@Kyeh @lichen @mediocrebot What’s a VMP then? I thought it was those who pay $5 monthly.
@goldnectar @Kyeh @mediocrebot The VMPs are the old timers. They canceled that program but if you were already signed up you got grandfathered in.
@goldnectar @Kyeh @lichen @mediocrebot I think VMP is people who joined the program before a specific date?
@Kyeh

@goldnectar @jeffcohen it went quick
@jeffcohen @jnicholson0619 must’ve. I was sitting here refreshing for the past 10 minutes. Saw nothing.
@goldnectar Dunno…I just refreshed at 4pm, hit the buy button and it went through. There were only 34 remaining, so it makes sense they’d go fast.

@Thumperchick Wooo!

@Calantorntain Oops, sorry. We’re sold out.
@mediocrebot drat. Worth a try.
That went faster than an IRK.
@dl1589 No it didn’t I refreshed a full minute after and it was still there. IRKs go in seconds.
@dl1589 @lichen I was refreshing 5 minutes before and after. Never saw it.
@dl1589 @lichen It can show up on a refresh as not sold out yet when there are already enough transactions in progress to eat the entire batch, so the fact that it didn’t go to “sold out” on that second refresh doesn’t mean that it was really still up for grabs. It just means that when the page request was filled by the web server, the database flag hadn’t been flipped yet; latency is a four-letter word.
@dl1589 @goldnectar @lichen Were you refreshing in the right time zone?
@goldnectar @Kidsandliz @lichen
Yes, I tried at 1:00 PST, but the 34 held over for VMP sold out at 4:00 EST.
Hopefully I’ll have better luck next time.
Yeesh. That one didn’t even take a full minute.
This never gets used. It is too much trouble to set up, use, take apart and CLEAN! If you value your time, and know how to use a box grater, and a Chef’s knife, you only need this if you are feeding an Army!
@bgammill Thanks for this. I feel better missing out.
@bgammill @goldnectar And coincidentally they’re selling chef’s knives on Sidedeal.

My package is apparently stuck in a black hole named Olathe, KS (it’s pronounced like it has an a on the end if anyone is curious, why IDFK, they also pronounce Miami with an a sound on the end in KS and in OK). But apparently my package is just bouncing around up there in Olathe.
@remo28 Mine just left Olathe, supposedly.
@Kyeh mine says it finally arrived in Olathe
@remo28 Oh, I just remembered, they’ve had those tornadoes in Kansas - that might be why things aren’t getting through there fast!
@remo28 Oh, that IS weird!
