@eeterrific Bluetooth usually has lower sound quality. And these are still portable, though they will lower your battery life a tad instead. It's a compromise
If these sound as good or better than the JBL Micro or Mini speaker docs sold on meh.com then for $20 they'll blow away the $20 computer speaker alternatives out there.
Looking at a Mac mini for family use - these will provide the sound output. Outspoken-jolliest-kitten (Who knew that Googling for an image of that would auto-complete?
I really want these. My current PC speakers are old and small and not very good. But I just bought a comforter last week. And I don't need these, I only want them. It's a dilemma.
I think that what is actually happening is people are trying to say, in a kind manner, that they don't understand how Jason gets money for what he does.
handmade-fluorescent-malt. Cool I'm in for 2. But wondering if they come with the USB cables? Says this in specs:32" cord from speaker to USB, 33" cable from left speaker to right speaker, and extra 20" aux-in cable. But doesn't list it under what's in the box....
For clarification, these aren't really USB speakers right? It appears that you must connect the aux-in cable to an audio-out jack and it only uses the USB for power. Can someone confirm that you can connect it to USB only and it will act as a USB speaker? I don't think so but I'm curious.
@cengland0 USB is for power and audio. Product description on JBL's site says: "Simply connect via USB plug-and-play and transform your laptop entertainment into a unique 2.0 stereo sound experience." A reviewer on JBL's site says: "But the truly amazing thing about these is the fact that the USB plug not only serves as an input for the sound, it also powers them."
@cengland0 that USB connection not only feeds power and sound, but also connects the volume control dial/knob on the speaker to the Windows volume control. Handy, so by spinning the volume control on the speaker, you're really controlling the Windows volume control. No fussing with two independent volume controls.
@mediocrelab I wondered about that 2 amp requirement as well since I didn't think computer USB ports could carry that amount of current. But the reviews indicate these work great as computer speakers.
I think USB 1.0 & 2.0 spec require only 0.5A, so many chargers and computer USB ports typically supply only 1A. I think the speaker may still work, but not at full power.
@mediocrelab@SSteve I've sent a question about this to JBL CS. I'm really interested to know what the power consumption actually is, will it be different on a USB 2.0 PC bus than a 2A wall wart? Is the unit internally regulated?
@mediocrelab So couldn't you just plug the usb into a wall adator and plug it into a wall if it the laptop doesn't send enough power through the usb port? I am thinking of the plug used for a phone or does one have to be careful about that?
Seems like a great deal, and lowest price I've seen for these by far. If it were in black, I probably would have bought. I like where your head's at though, Meh.
Just got around to looking at that Scorpion link. That was a pretty good read and so much of it (e.g. "Worst Album Cover") was so much like Spinal Tap that I like that movie even more now -- if that's even possible.
@mariamcgowan Yay!! Welcome to Meh. Hope this does not set your expectations too high. Folks round here are proud of Mediocrity. And if ypu overlook some gruff and snarky exteriors, they are softhearted inside. Even @unixrab, our token curmudgeon has a fuzzy interior.
You know, I slept on it, hoping that it would sell out for us East Coasters (got woken up by a wrong number text). Darn it, I am weak, and you did not sell out. grubbing-lolling-whip (sounds very 50 Shades of Grey, but instead brings hipsters who have instagrammed their dinners)
Didn't get a color option when I order today from meh. Photo shows white speakers. Would like the black the orange trim... guess I'll see for $20+$5 S/H not bad.
Are you guys sure about the 2A USB power requirement? Outside of your specs, I'm not seeing that anywhere on the internet. This doesn't make sense as there is not enough current coming through a USB to power it.
My antique Creative/Cambridge Soundworks Slim 500 speakers finally bought it, so I bought these. Good timing, meh. (I bought the previous system for $30 on outpost.com in 2001. Those were the days.)
@jtlynn23 Thank you... I did see the parallels between your comments and mine. Coincidental. "Great minds run on the same track". Hope we're both happy with the Pebbles.
WOW !! Just found these on Rick Broida's 'Cheapskate Blog'. Pow! ordered them.
I have a pair of JBL bookshelf speakers for my audio system and love them. If these are half as good as my other JBLs, then I'll be a happy camper.
I have a pair of Cambridge Soundworks speakers + their sub from 1999 and am very pleased with them. However they are in their 16th year of use and they can't last forever... sooo this offer showed up at a great time.
Welp, either my wife or I have to buy something at least once a month to start an argument; i.e. "Why the hell did you buy that? We don't need it!" I guess it's my turn.
@tentalces1349 I think there is something up with their "my orders" page, I received an order yesterday that shows "placed" instead of shipped and it has a tracking number ;)
Are these shipped yet? I am trying to contact you about problems with my acc't. but I either get no reply or I get the 'terribly wrong' message. I'm getting very nervous & upset about this purchase!
Most of these have shipped but there are still some that will go out today or tomorrow depending on the weather. Check https://meh.com/orders for your tracking number once they ship.
Wow, this is blowing my mind. Shipped out 3/4 and estimated delivery is 3/11. This is for a 3 hour drive, Dallas to Austin. I've never had a shipment from within the state take this long. I guess I'm not too fond of Fedex Smartpost.
The good news is I received my pair of Pebbles. The bad news is that I received them from woot, because I ordered there at a higher price before they showed up here. The next good news is that they test out fine on my son's Win 8 laptop. The sound is clean and airy, but very thin on the bottom. They really need a subwoofer, but they're more than fine considering the price paid. The next bad news is that they didn't play at all on my Win 7 tower. I got the message about installing a driver when I first plugged it in, and it seemed to install okay, but no sound output at all. The next good news is that I didn't want them for my tower anyway. I want them for the laptop I mostly keep elsewhere. The next bad news is that I haven't made it to that elsewhere with the Pebbles yet, so I don't know if they'll play on it.
I got around to messing with these, and they sound pretty great for $20. For those wondering if you could use them without a computer, yes you can. I plugged the usb cable on the speakers into a usb wallwart adapter (an apple one even) and then plugged the headphone out on my nexus4 into the aux in (on the side not the back) and jammed out.
@Al_Coholic I have the reverse problem; got a working right and a dead left speaker. At least if you average the two of us out, we have one working set of speakers!
Just got my Pebbles and plugged them into my Win 7 tower. I let the drivers load and rebooted. At first I couldn't get any sound, Win 7 kept telling me that no speakers were attached. I rebooted a second time and still nothing. Then I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them. Success!
I wasn't expecting much since these are USB. I turned them up to full along with Windows Media Player. I played a movie and expected a nice sound, but what I got WAS JUST SO LOUD THAT MY BACK TEETH STARTED SHAKING LIKE A MORNING WITH TOO MUCH COFFEE. TURN THEM DOWN! TURN THEM DOWN! TURN THEM down... Whew.
Anyway, for my purposes they sound great and I can put the speakers at 50% and WMP at 25% and still get plenty of sound out of these babies. I'm using them with an HTPC in the kitchen. It's a big kitchen (and can get noisy when the vent hood is on) so loud speakers are a necessity and these Pebbles fit the bill. And consider that I replaced a Philips sound bar with these and the Pebbles sound much better and louder than the sound bar and they consume much less counter space.
Now I just wish I had bought two of them. Next time, Meh. Next time.
Just got them. For speakers this size (smallish) they sound amazing. I did buy two sets (1 set for wife) and happy I did. Now excuse me while I rock out.
I really should have bought these. Meh and my demographic is just a little bit off. So much of this stuff I bought just a bit ago. I really like it all, but the timings just off for me.
@nafelsen I hooked up to my 32" Vizio. I first tried using the USB with no luck. I have the audio going to a boom box and the headphone out going to the JBL. Sounds great. I need the boombox to control the volume via remote.
I purchased these on March 2, 2015 and I'm extremely pleased with the sound of my Pebbles. I like that they plug into the usb port as I don't have to run a separate power cord. My iMac has four usb ports so no problem there. The frequency range is as advertised and they have good stereo imaging as well. I wish I had bought two pairs of these at $25/pair - they're well worth it!
Does anyone know how to disassemble these babies? Google hasn't been much help, but then I'm not a google ninja. Since Meh C/S is overwhelmed & it doesn't look like JBL thinks Mediocre was an authorized dealer & I'm almost out of the 30 day satisfaction window, I'm afraid my only choice is to try to fix the problem myself. The left speaker has a short in it. I can only get the very briefest blip of sound when it's whacked hard. Any ideas?
@LaVikinga Not sure about the pebbles, but if they are anything like the process with the MINI docks you peel the 'feet' off the bottom and the screws are underneath. You know opening them will void the warranty right? Did you let jbl know the name of the company was "a mediocre corporation"?
@thismyusername Doh! I didn't use Mediocre. I used Meh when I wrote. I am an idiot. Other than two 1/4" wide non-skid strips running along the bottom of the speaker base, there's nothing to peel back. I'll drop an email to JBL using Mediocre Corp. rather than Meh to see if I can get a response. I do have an email stuck in the Meh C/S dungeon, but I know how in the weeds the C/S team has been lately. Thanks for the heads up about using the proper purchaser. I now see it was mentioned elsewhere on the page.
@LaVikinga yea I looked at mine but didn't wanna peel it... another thought was perhaps the sides... but I would check the feet first... for sure the MINI dock i tore apart (trying to get more clearance for the dock port so I can keep my case on) were under the feet. I totally hosed the dock but am working on replacing it (the cable part is in tact but the actual plastic piece is trashed hehe)
@thismyusername If you figure out how to make it work with cases... let me know, I'm on a hunt for a new case that won't need to modify the 10 docks I have laying around...
I don't know why these have been dropping in Price... Is there something going on at JBL? I seem to see a lot of this item in particular in the 15-30 price range depending on store and refurb or new. Yes the speakers are kind of big... but they sound pretty good for "cheap" speakers. Maybe someone @ MEH can tell me why this and the JBL speaker docks are so cheap constantly especially here... Also maybe let me know if I should buy elsewhere of if these will come back along and just wait it out? Maybe in a Fukubukuro...
(On a side note, I'm a little terrified with the amount of speaker dock and misc random comments about crap that I find amusing/useful in small doses the next fukubukuro will not be anything "good" Just speaker docks the USB speakers and more Built NY... Which on one hand would be nice... other hand the other crap in a fukubukuro is pretty sweet too... And yes the speaker docks aren't trolling, I do like having a place to drop my phone to charge and hear it... Now if I could only find a good case for the IPhone 6 plus that protects it well and still works with the speaker docks, and can use my mountek snap still...)
@sohmageek It was alluded to in our quasi-infamous first offering of speaker docks, but JBL isn't making speaker docks without wireless anymore, that has a lot to do with it.
@JonT I think part of why I like them so much... Has to do with the life expectancy of cables with me... They don't last long. Not at all. Docks tend to outlast the connector... So I use them to charge more than cables... :) My favorite cable has really been a cheap micro usb with the apple adapter :)
As alluded to by someone else, I purchased the JBL pebble and discovered a short in the cable connection between the left and right speaker. The left speaker does not function without prodding and adjustment, and then it only works for a few minutes before it shorts again. Needless to say the build quality with some of these units is a serious detriment to functionality. I blame the product and manufacturer, BUT, in contacting Meh customer service for a return and refund I have not received a reply, this after a week of my initial request. I also sent a following message which also has not been acknowledged directly. This reflects badly on Meh, if not worse than the faulty product. My VIP membership expires in a couple days. I'd like to know I am paying for some service that at least acknowledges me as a customer and not just a credit card number! Can you hear me Meh???
@rollers You do not have a VIP membership. You have a VMP (Very Mediocre Person) membership and mediocre service is what you can expect and it is what you will get. Your $5 VMP gives you free shipping for a month. That's it, nothing else except for an occasional VMP freebie.
@katblue Well then, I should expect barely adequate customer service... which should be, not for nothing, some form of customer service! The only thing that has been serviced is my charge card for a defective product.
@rollers If it will make you feel any better, I have been trying to GIVE back to MEH, a camera they accidentally sent me and I have received no response. They say that their customer service is absolutely swamped and that they will get to everyone as soon as they can. I believe them. I hope that you do, too.
@katblue Yes, it makes me feel a little better that I'm not getting any less mediocre service than someone else, but sadly my credit card doesn't care what I feel. I don't know if it's worth 5$/mo (shipping aside) to have an icon next to my member name. I am a VMP ("P" for person) after all, not a VMI (Very Mediocre Icon).
@rollers you're completely right and I agree that our CS team is taking longer to respond than any of us would like. Our CS team is very, very small and while they're totally amazing and regularly work overtime and weekends so they can respond to as many customers as possible, there are only so many emails one human can answer in a day. We're working on improving response times by adding staff and making changes to our processes, but it's going to take some time. I totally understand where you're coming from and we share your frustration. For your particular issue, there is a one year warranty on these through JBL and contacting them is the first step in getting a replacement, our CS team will be there if you run into any trouble and they'll respond as soon as they can.
good sound but they are their own USB multimedia device. If I plug headphones into my PC they don't switch over. bugger. they dont have a headphone port that I have found.
I recommend against purchase of these speakers. Almost exactly one year to the day after I purchased them (as soon as the warranty had expired) the right speaker quit working. I’ve tried different USB ports, different laptops, and even plugging an iPhone directly into the AUX input, and the right speaker refuses to output any sound. I’ve gotten free USB speakers before that have worked for longer than a year. Spend your money elsewhere.
Use them every day on the laptop, been almost a year, makes it like a mini theater on the coffee table, with real stereo speakers loud enough to have to turn down when the grenades start going off. Love 'em! $20, great solid steal.

No more speakers!
@Richardson Seriously. I can't walk out of a thrift store without yet another set of speakers ... Usually with a subwoofer full of spiders.
I'm okay with this. Work computer has no Bluetooth or decent way to run analog wire, and I need music to function.
I have to say, these are some of the best photos I've seen in a long time.
But....but....no Bluetooth???!!! And you can't dock anything with these! I don't understand!
@eeterrific You can dock a Walkman from 1992 to them
@eeterrific Bluetooth usually has lower sound quality. And these are still portable, though they will lower your battery life a tad instead. It's a compromise
And left out of the specs they measure (according to amazon) 9.1 x 8.1 x 6.3 inches ; 1.4 pounds
This is a great item and a great price, but I have no use for these.
I own a pair. They just came from woot last week. I paid $29.95 for them, plus shipping. I haven't unpacked them yet, so I can't speak to the quality.
cool review, bro
for $20 these things are impressive as hell!
Not a bad deal for speakers and a laptop. Hope it runs at least Win 7?
It's good to see Max Headroom getting work, even if it's after death.
@jose602 Funny, I thought he'd become some lame pseudo-scientist on some scifi one-woman show.
@rufwork His name is Stinky Pinky. I wonder where he's been to get so stinky...
Nice deal. I would definitely buy them if I didn't already have multiple sets of speakers...
If only they had a dock on them.....
Meh. I have a pair of crystal USB speakers I bought from ThinkGeek several years ago, and they're still going strong. Don't need new ones.
I want to buy these so badly for $20, but I'm perfectly happy with my current computer speakers and TOTALLY unemployed, soooooooo...meh :/
chunky-violent-toucan
…not sure how i feel about that…
@brhfl funky-upbeat-parrot... meh must have a thing for birds today...
umm, what color are these? Because I really don't want orange speakers.
@sublimosa if the model number is listed correctly, they are Silver/White
@thismyusername I believe they are blue and black...
@azdarkknight smartass! :)
@sublimosa GOLD, DAMMIT!
I own one of the Asus U46e i7 laptops that has a terrible single speaker for audio.
No problem, right?
"Just listen to headphones," one might say.
That was my exact solution for two years until my daughter simultaneously mangled my Denon cans and my headphone out jack.
I have been looking for a decent usb solution, and these exact speakers have actually been on my radar due to the positive Amazon reviews...
Thanks, Mediocre Labs, for a great deal (and the socks)!
Bad use of a USB port in my opinion, MEH!
@Stallion
If these sound as good or better than the JBL Micro or Mini speaker docs sold on meh.com then for $20 they'll blow away the $20 computer speaker alternatives out there.
meh. I just bought a logitech pair of speakers for $29(free shipping) with three times the power.
@mecatron Proof, please.
@haydesigner of what? of my purchase or the existence of such speakers ( it's actually 2.1 sistem two speakers and a bass ) http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Speaker-System-Z323-Subwoofer/dp/B002FU5QM0 I got them at dailyseals
Looking at a Mac mini for family use - these will provide the sound output. Outspoken-jolliest-kitten (Who knew that Googling for an image of that would auto-complete?
Oh no, my one weakness...non-speaker-dock speakers!
righteous-loud-fact
Looks cool but so limited with only USB connection. I'm gonna pass.
@shaine228 there is a 3.5 aux in.
I actually really want these and I just bought a USB hub. But on the other hand I just bought a USB hub. Meh.
In for two. Sweet.
I really want these. My current PC speakers are old and small and not very good. But I just bought a comforter last week. And I don't need these, I only want them. It's a dilemma.
I want these, but I am still rocking the iPig. He is much cuter, too.
"I wonder if these would work on a raspberry pi," she said, musingly.
(and the answer appears to be "yes")
@rocketdyke Don't you have to say it "piously"?
@2many2no GROAN!
@2many2no or perhaps wait 12 days until 9:26:53 in the morning to say it. Especially this year.
I think that what is actually happening is people are trying to say, in a kind manner, that they don't understand how Jason gets money for what he does.
Curse you, meh! In for one.
Don't tell Mom.
@2many2no MMMOOOOOMMMMMMMM 2many2no is spending money again after you said no!!! MMMOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM 2many2no is hitting me for tattling!!!!
@Kidsandliz Damn, now my side aches from laughing!
But I'ma get u 4 tellin'
ghoulish-raunchy-ramen. At least now I know what I'll be having for lunch tomorrow.
Am I the only one that thinks these speakers look like flat tires???
@Kerig3 Not any more.
@Kerig3 I see Poké balls (like Meh stated)
In black these speakers REALLY look like flat tires:

@SSteve Will this work reliably on all computers? I am not sure. Speaker spec above said it needs 2A USB charger, like those used by iPad or Note4.
@mediocrelab I wondered about that 2 amp requirement as well since I didn't think computer USB ports could carry that amount of current. But the reviews indicate these work great as computer speakers.

headstrong-patriotic-lemur Well, ok. Two out of three, these were meant for me...I guess.
No Georgia Red. . . for that alone, meh.
@jrwofuga No Florida Orange/Blue... for that alone, meh.
Is that laptop included by chance?
Just got around to looking at that Scorpion link. That was a pretty good read and so much of it (e.g. "Worst Album Cover") was so much like Spinal Tap that I like that movie even more now -- if that's even possible.
@ACraigL looking for that link now.
Damn it, I kinda need these, there goes my VMP refund

Bigger than I thought.
@Kyser_Soze Totally not that big!
I tried to order speakers but it says the address isn't valid. It is valid!!
Now what?!
@mariamcgowan Move someplace valid, I guess. Or contact support.
@mariamcgowan I think I saw something about flipping your apartment # and street address between lines 1 & 2, in case that helps.
@Pamtha You are a genius!! And very helpful, sweet, kind, etc!!
It worked!

Thought these looked familiar:
http://computers.woot.com/offers/jbl-pebbles-2-0-usb-speaker-system-1
@ACraigL as does the first comment on this deal by @zhenrychen.
Meh. don't look like they would skip over the pond very well.
@AlexNoVA well then, it appears you might not have the stones to go with this deal.
@RedOak right you are. I'll have to get my rocks off with another deal.
You have one crazy site, and I love it! Very refreshing.
Why can't other online sellers follow your lead!
@fireball35 The lead isn't enough. It requires constant focus and execution. Woot started out with this exactly this lead and turned into crap.
@fireball35 shoulda been here before the reaping
You know, I slept on it, hoping that it would sell out for us East Coasters (got woken up by a wrong number text). Darn it, I am weak, and you did not sell out. grubbing-lolling-whip (sounds very 50 Shades of Grey, but instead brings hipsters who have instagrammed their dinners)
They should have called these the JBL Snail Shells
@UgaDogCH They do look pretty damn ugly to me, but maybe if you added some decorative bits, these speakers could come off as a passable molluscs.
heady-informative-oven -
Didn't get a color option when I order today from meh. Photo shows white speakers. Would like the black the orange trim... guess I'll see for $20+$5 S/H not bad.
@fourbye99 these are not black and orange, just so ya know. They're white and silver like in the product photos.
Are you guys sure about the 2A USB power requirement? Outside of your specs, I'm not seeing that anywhere on the internet. This doesn't make sense as there is not enough current coming through a USB to power it.

I just ordered, and I can hear them already!
Comment 100; mehmentous
After many moons of tripping over my better judgement, I finally broke down and made my first MEH purchase......I think I'm getting moist.
trying to think of a reason to need these....
Meh for the USB speakers, slow hand clap for the humble brag copy...

@tentalces1349 I think there is something up with their "my orders" page, I received an order yesterday that shows "placed" instead of shipped and it has a tracking number ;)

I am trying to contact you about problems with my acc't.
but I either get no reply or I get the 'terribly wrong' message.
I'm getting very nervous & upset about this purchase!
@wilburdee support is always backed up... but the way to contact them is https://meh.com/support... check this link for more info: https://meh.com/forum/topics/what-meh-customer-support-does-and-doesnt-do
tl;dr: they are slow to ship and reply but they are legit.
What address is it being shipped to . The shipping and billing addresses are confusing
@lear you can view your orders at https://meh.com/orders, it will also show your shipping address and a tracking number when the item ships.
Most of these have shipped but there are still some that will go out today or tomorrow depending on the weather. Check https://meh.com/orders for your tracking number once they ship.

Got a pair and want to return them. How do I do that? Can't use them and want a refund
@arvidw Sell them on ebay. https://meh.com/forum/topics/faq
Left speaker sounds great, right speaker does not sound at all. :(
@Al_Coholic Make sure the other speaker is connected at the back of the first speaker and not the side... the side port is an aux in.
@thismyusername Yeah, that's how I had it set up. It's actually the speaker with the Aux In port that doesn't work. Pretty sure I just got a bad one.
@Al_Coholic I have the reverse problem; got a working right and a dead left speaker. At least if you average the two of us out, we have one working set of speakers!
@auralaura Ha I guess so. Maybe we could trade, I'll send you my non-working one for your working one. :D
@bloewy wish i had bought two now! i'm torn whether to use them for my small tv in my rv (sounds tinny) or just as computer speakers.
Looks like dell just followed suit JBL Pebbles Plug & Play 2.0 Speaker System (white) $25 + Free Shipping
Bought 2 sets. One for me and one for wife. One out of two defective.She is not happy!!!!
@edkrupp hmmm. Contemplate domestic turmoil.
I really should have bought these. Meh and my demographic is just a little bit off. So much of this stuff I bought just a bit ago. I really like it all, but the timings just off for me.
Very good! I like it.
was under the impression that i could connect to my 32" vizio
but no luck -i guess the tv's usb has no power
any ideas, please
Why they sent me two are on the right usb!???
@sunnyex I don't think that's right, actually...contact our support team at https://meh.com/support.
@sunnyex [1]:
@stupidrobot what can i do?
@sunnyex contact us at https://meh.com/support.
@sohmageek that reminds me, I've been meaning to order a lightning extension cable... Monoprice i think had them cheap.
I got this in the mail a week ago and they just don't work. Anyone have that problem?
@thedrone00 I was trying to use them with a phone, didn't realize they rely on USB for power.
good sound but they are their own USB multimedia device.
I bought these in 2015 and today they are still working fine. I don’t own any small appliance that has lasted that long- not even my $500 plus phones!
2023 checking in, and same. Good sound, good price, and still working 8 years later.
More stuff like this please.
(Now meh will do a month of cheap speakers and I’ll be the goat)
@zippyus
Well…NOW you did it!
@chienfou @zippyus Hmmm. I sense an oncoming October nomination in the farce.
