Jan 31 boat of day
16Today’s ship is the USS Little Rock. It is a brand new littoral combat ship of the US Navy. It was comisioned this fall in Buffalo but someone forgot to warn the Navy that water freezes up north. It got stuck heading south by the ICE in the saint Lawrence seaway and is now iced in until spring in Montreal.

Likely iced in and going to be slightly damaged by shifting ice. Our tax dollars at work.
@Kidsandliz oh it is iced in completely
@Kidsandliz Yeah. Someone should be in hot water (lol) for this screw-up.
Hmmm… I wonder if our little Christmas trees disappear tonight…
@daveinwarsh probably do. I wonder if they have mailed our prizes to those they used old old addresses with or if, in the end, we are just out of luck.
@Kidsandliz The Capt. should have to stay until thaw.
@PocketBrain OTOH, maybe he’s not really responsible; who would be responsible for the timely allocation of said vessel? Maybe the Capt. wanted to get underweigh, but somebody had to crack open a Chianti on the bow. Anyway, this just adds to the woes of that ship class. Don’t forget to add oil.
Thank you goat. You have served your term with grace. You may now sail off into the distance.
But don’t stop with the boats!
I love military ships. We drove to Norfolk for a harbor tour a few years ago and they showed us all sorts of stuff. (But not too closely.) Thanks for the month of entertainment!
This is what a boat on ice should look like.

@rtjhnstn i have never been ice boating i really want to try it one of these days
@CaptAmehrican They can go 60mph if you are on a racing one (I was a passenger on one of those once but not in a race). I sailed myself ones that would get to 40+mph. Wear a helmet. While dumping (yup done that due to a pressure ridge we hit) you end up sliding a fair distance which dissipates some of the force so you end up less damaged than if you “dumped” a motorcycle at the same speed, it is still more dangerous than sailing. Fun as heck though. Due to speeds you can get to frostbite is a very real concern. Protect your face and eyes and wear windproof clothes. You also have to think ahead about where open water is and where you’d be sliding to if you dumped. Because of the design “capsizing” is less of a danger because you have enough warning that you are too close to the wind, the bigger danger is pressure ridges and hitting them wrong then tipping end over end (bow stops, stern rises, you get tossed out over the bow)
Fair winds and following seas, Goat! Nice month!
@simssj go vote for next months goat. I have picked out a special boat for each of the leading canidates.
I have had so much fun boating with all of youI am likely to continue random boat of day posts not every day but when mood hits.
@CaptAmehrican yay!
Lots of high fiving going on in the Coast Guard
I have enjoyed the ships, especially the Navy Ships. My dad was in for twenty.
Families were invited to eat on his ship in San Diego.
We were taken out in a boat to the ship.
It was a true adventure, I was four but that is something unforgettable.
The smell of the shipyards are etched in my olfactory nerve, brings back memories of watching him leave and come back! Those were the good ole days!
My brother was a riverboat pilot, the youngest pilot of his day, had his license before he was legal to pilot.
Water is my favorite place to be, in or on!
You have been a great goat with your own spin!

Thanks!
