It’s the image that you-know-who (aka the thread spoiler) had posted, and I was just testing it out on a thread that (I thought) wouldn’t be noticed. I think there were just too damn many woot shirts on it; that’s what really broke it.
@Del Howdy, ma’am. You almost made me spray Talenti Gelato (Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip) and that would be sinful. I’m with you, it was probably censorship. :-}
@del@narfcake I sometimes walk through that R shit and flirt with NC-17 (okay, I do it a lot) . . . Many here do likewise. We all just do it with panache and perpetual optimism.
@mikibell, there was a short time edited for clarity (a few weeks maybe) a couple of years ago, when @snapster was censoring the daily product discussion topic. He was deleting comments he deemed “not helpful” (because the comment wasn’t directly “on topic”, or didn’t contribute to the intended purpose of the product discussion). You likely can search the forum and find his explanation, and appeal to keep the product discussion topic focused. Clearly he’s long since given up on that dream.
During the short time this was happening I had a handful of my comments deleted. A few nights in a row my comments were purged and I got butt hurt and stopped participating in the meh forum for a while. And then… ya, that didn’t last. More’s the pity.
I’m very glad that you didn’t stick by your refusal to engage, since otherwise who would track the perfidious conduct of /giphy?
So please, still be a weakling in this regard.
If i recall, the objection to the posts was that the first “x” posts in the item-of-the-day thread - say the first 50-100 posts, as an example" - just tended to consist of the single word:
Meh
(or some other short and dismissive remark)
in various forms and formats. This meant a repetitive joke that got old by post #3, and no genuinely funny or amusing commentary, and no genuine evaluation of the product, until very late in the thread. This was fine for the regulars, but put off new visitors and persons not involved in the forums.
I wasn’t posting at the time (or just barely posting), but I recall thinking that the objection to the endless Meh posts was legit in its conception, but there was no prior announcement if I remember, just a bunch of deletes and a bif announcement of RULES, and the execution was a bit unexpectedly brutal and was likely to really turn people off.
There was a lot of discussion and lowering of emotions in the next few days, but some folk did vanish for a while after that. I hope most of them returned.
@JonT was stellar, if I remember? And people wanted to turn on him a bit.
Here are some of the topics, in case anyone wants to go re-read them and start a flame war. (Please don’t do this OK?)
(I think I am missing a few of the threads? They were all in the Feb 5-14, 2015 time period I think?
@ruouttaurmind oh dear… I don’t play in most of the product threads, because I don’t want to distract from useful feedback. I was unaware the octopus was censoring.
Regardless, so glad you are back! Wanna see what I want for my next toy? (Other than the $4000 model, I haven’t been able to locate where to purchase! Haven’t looked hard yet!)
@ruouttaurmind@mikibell Yep, I got censured, too, and this was when I was goat. I left, and I really hadn’t planned on coming back. However, @JonT coaxed me back. (He was such a nice guy, I miss him.)
I would have been the first goat to abdicate the throne. (Should I giphy? Nah.)
I am considering stealing the kid’s 3d printer and modding it for chocolate
I’ve seen discussions of this in the 3D printer forums. Some claim to have successfully developed a mod which facilitates easily switching between FDM and chocolate. Maybe the kiddo might not object if you could easily switch back?
@ruouttaurmind P.S. speaking of gadgets… I am thinking of making homemade pasta for Christmas presents… I have two pasta makers and a few sets of ravioli molds…how many pounds do you think families of 2, of 4, or of 6 need?
I’m not a fair judge since I’ll eat a pound of pasta in a single meal.
But when my ex and her kids lived with me (young girl and 2 teen boys) I’d typically prepare a pound, plus a loaf of garlic bread and a garden salad. The salad would be the only leftovers.
I’d guess an average kidless couple might use 1/2 pound for a meal?? Or possibly prepare a full pound if they’re the sort who take leftovers for lunch the next day? (leftover pasta is usually SO tasty the next day!!!)
I’m very glad that you didn’t stick by your refusal to engage
It wasn’t particularly a refusal as much as not wanting to submit comments that would be purged. It’s sort of like being shamed and sent to stand in the corner I guess?
Anyway, the drone threads were just too tempting and drew me back into participating. Though primarily in those topics, then drone.horse (RIP). Once those topics died I drifted back over here. Much to the chagrin of many, I’m sure.
Many thousands of postings later… my meh user profile proclaims me as an irrepressible chatterbox.
And, as you recognize, who else is going to call @giphy to task for gross malfeasance?
@shawn Why can I not star a post from an email? Seriously. If someone tags me and I want to acknowledge them by starring the post, I have to come back to the forum. It is easy enough, as the link is provided . . . . and I’m going to do that (most likely) anyway (come back). Is it possible to star the post directly from the email? I’m just looking to save time.
@Pavlov I had to click the link in the email which took me right to this reply and then click again on the star icon like an animal. Took me 5 seconds.
We could cut this down to 1 second if we could like posts from the email. Good idea.
So starring the posts did it? I’m innocent, then, because I almost never open a thread with more than 100 (or so) posts. I figure all the fun stuff has happened, and people are just repeating themselves. Life is short. My mouse could wear out.
There’s outside to go play in, as well. Did anyone notice that it’s summer out there?
@Shrdlu Yes I noticed there is an outside to play in. Right now it is hot, humid with torrential downpours and thunderstorms. And there are fire ants and mosquitoes. And it has ticks to give me lyme disease. I met my “played outside” quota in my youth working on tall ships, taking people camping for a living and sitting in a chair at soccer and soft ball kid games. I am now being thoughtful and saving some “outside to play in” for others and not selfishly using it all up.
@narfcake I think she keeps shooting herself in the kneecap because to drive it up I think she needs to write less and star more? Isn’t that the formula?
It’s the image that you-know-who (aka the thread spoiler) had posted, and I was just testing it out on a thread that (I thought) wouldn’t be noticed. I think there were just too damn many woot shirts on it; that’s what really broke it.
@Shrdlu You forget @f00l notices everything. She is like a creepy peeping-tom around here.
@Shrdlu Blame the shirtgoat.
@mfladd
Saw that.
@narfcake when mediocritee actually opens it must have a shirtgoat!
@Cerridwyn Absolutely! We’ll start by blaming that guy that keeps asking for catshirts …
.
.
.
Aww, fuck!
@narfcake Sorry, incorrectly directed this reply to you. What I meant to say is:
@Shrdlu
I prefer “Thread Slayer” thankyouverymuch.
OK. Yeah, that thread was one of those late-at-nite, words-in-head things.
If only we were all less @ignorant. Or less @ruouttaurmind types.
Have we ever had a single thread break like that? I don’t remember one.
@mfladd i think the “last person to post here wins” thread was close. That’s why a new one was created
Censorship? Hmmmmm.
@Del no… @thumperchick, et. Al are very judicious with censorship. I can only recall three incidences where things were over the line and poofed.
@Del Howdy, ma’am. You almost made me spray Talenti Gelato (Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip) and that would be sinful. I’m with you, it was probably censorship. :-}
@mikibell Basic guidelines: Woot allows PG-13; meh allows R.
@del @narfcake I sometimes walk through that R shit and flirt with NC-17 (okay, I do it a lot) . . . Many here do likewise. We all just do it with panache and perpetual optimism.
@narfcake
@Pavlov
This image is clearly XXX
As you can see.
@f00l Stop trying to break shit here!
@narfcake
OK, dammit. I’ll behave myself and start breaking just fuck all instead.
Where’s @Carl669? I could use some fucking assistance.
@f00l
You do know how that can be read…
@f00l that’s because of the dead body in the cart?

I think most of us recovered well enough. It prob still burns a few people to relive the memories tho.

@mikibell it does chocolate?
@Kidsandliz yes!
(Dream want…not a real want!)
@ruouttaurmind @mikibell Yep, I got censured, too, and this was when I was goat. I left, and I really hadn’t planned on coming back. However, @JonT coaxed me back. (He was such a nice guy, I miss him.)

@Barney @ruouttaurmind @mikibell I was censured too. Glad they gave up on that. The community would have been really different had they kept it up.
@Kidsandliz Yeah, they would have weeded out all of the riffraff.
@Barney The rifraff is why we’re all… wait a minute… we ARE the rifraff!
@Kidsandliz, I agree, it would have been a very different place if you had to watch your Pees and Queues.
@mikibell I’ve noticed those in click-bait ads. I don’t really care for chocolate, or I’m sure I’d be shopping for one too! (I DO love my gadgets!)
This is what I think I’m going to be on the eye for:
@ruouttaurmind how cute!
I am considering stealing the kid’s 3d printer and modding it for chocolate… don’t think he would appreciate it!
I have never seen the chocolate before…a friend of mine sent me a pic!
@mikibell
I’ve seen discussions of this in the 3D printer forums. Some claim to have successfully developed a mod which facilitates easily switching between FDM and chocolate. Maybe the kiddo might not object if you could easily switch back?

Not really relevant, but oddly satisfying.
@ruouttaurmind

We’re having trouble loading all the “likes” data over at https://meh.com/forum/topics/woot----i-just-dont-get-it. It’s not breaking because of an image or a link someone posted. Working on a fix now.
@shawn shhhhhhh we are enjoying picking on @ruouttaurmind…hehe…
Thank you for addressing it on a Sunday!
@shawn hurrayyyyy…now inquiring minds will know what was going on.
@mikibell we were having trouble loading some of the “likes” data in that topic
@shawn If we keep starring posts here, does that mean it’ll break too?
/image break all the things
@narfcake let’s find out!

@shawn Hey, those seconds add up . . .
@shawn
Hawt!
@Shrdlu Out … side?
https://shirt.woot.com/offers/inspirational-message-about-nature-4-sizes-3?ref=meh_com
(Hi, @marcee!)
Post counts correspond to the irrelevancy level of the topic. 100 posts = 100% irrelevant. 200 posts = 200% irrelevant.
@Shrdlu Yes I noticed there is an outside to play in. Right now it is hot, humid with torrential downpours and thunderstorms. And there are fire ants and mosquitoes. And it has ticks to give me lyme disease. @Shrdlu sad to disappoint you that it wasn’t some kind of forum censorship and instead just a boring bug
@shawn You know that was a joke, and directed at you just as much as at @Del, if not more. It was funny, dammit!
Starring posts broke things?
I am honored. My existence has meaning.
/giphy stars
@f00l Your altruism score is only 8.7; you need to star more posts.
@narfcake
My wrist is getting sore.
@narfcake I think she keeps shooting herself in the kneecap because to drive it up I think she needs to write less and star more? Isn’t that the formula?
@Kidsandliz
starring hurts my wrist more than typing does.
