Oh, my, my, my. I don’t think I’d ever heard that last one played/sung on Lawrence Welk. I am close to positive that they had no idea what a toke was, or what the song was even about. Man, life is just strange. Modern spiritual indeed.
@cranky1950 To quote, right from the text introducing it, on Meh’s own page:
The infamous Brewer & Shipley incident — sounds like Myron might be choking on a lungful of the forbidden herb himself as he introduces what Larry calls a “modern spiritual” (1971)
It’s also the quote on the Youtube original, but they do Mr. Welk the courtesy of referring to him as Lawrence, rather than “Larry”.
From the youtube description:
Did they realize what they were singing?! Gail Farrell and Dick Dale sing Brewer and Shipley’s song “One Toke Over The Line,” on The Lawrence Welk Show. Lawrence describes this song as a “modern spiritual”. Ummm, okay, I guess so, “technically”…
@Shrdlu You kinda have to remember the time frame and that Myron is a cheese head to begin with. The MSM didn’t have time to come to grips with middle class space cadets quite yet. This particular show is one of the few my wife remembers her parents watching when she was in high school.
I enjoyed the clip but she needs some dancing lessons.
Arg…
I think we watched every Lawrence Welk.
And every Sing along with Mitch.
And Ed Sullivan, which was at least better.
Getting only 2 or 3 stations, the selection was limited I guess.
Star if your town is in the lyrics. Mine is, so I have to self-star (ew).
@djslack Nope
@djslack negitive dont know if anything is rhyming with New Hampshire lol!
The melodica does sound a lot like a harmonica but that guy is not good at pretending to play it.

I think the melodica is by far the least weird thing in these clips.
I don’t understand this poll question so I’m forwarding it to me@rescam.org
