I actually have been looking for a turntable. Well, i was hoping for $10 at a garage sale really. This is more than i wanted to spend, but, it has built in speakers, is portable, and should be all around convenient.
With decent reviews on Amazon, and people saying to expect a medicore product for a decent price, this is an excellent product for meh.
I’m not in yet. But there’s a good chance i’ll get this later today.
@chacham Tbh really wouldn’t recommend spending $10 on a turntable. It’d be like shopping for desktop speakers and not wanting to pay more than $5: sure, you can get some for that price, but it’s really not gonna do you any favors. A shitty turntable can kill your records hella faster than one of these cheap things. Plus, you’d probably be hard-pressed to find a $10 turntable even at a garage sale.
@jawshark87 You can actually get a pretty damn decent turntable for $10 at a thrift store or garage sale. More likely you’ll be spending more, but plenty of people are getting rid of good units for incredible prices. I recently saw an old Dual at a pawn shop for $20. A different store had a TT-USB for $12, minus a headshell/cartridge. Almost bought that one, but I don’t have a place to put a second turntable.
@rschauer huh, lookit that. tbh i haven’t really gone turntable hunting at garage sales since i inherited not one, but two, turntables from my folks that were pretty decent.
everyone listen to this guy.
@jawshark87 I’ve gotten one before. I almost bought another a few weeks ago during a city-wide weekend garage sale. But, the lady told me she might bring it out another day. She was selling her parents stuff as they were moving. Unfortunately, i didn’t see her on Sunday.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@chacham I’d suggest holding off for a garage sale or thrift store find. With the reviews on this, keep in the mind the kinds of people buying it and reviewing it. They aren’t people aware of or interested in audio quality or durability.
Vinyl is kinda cool, but this can’t possibly sound better or different than our regular digital crap right? I have 1 or 2 old LP’s still I bought for collector’s sake.
For notably better sound for just a bit more money, consider the Audio Technica AT60-LP-USB. It’s sound output is an order of magnitude better; truly HiFi. If you can manage it, the Audio Technica AT120-LP-USB is even better yet. (I copy-and-pasted that from Amazon.)
@Pantheist The AT-120 is definitely a better turntable that will give you the listening experience that everyone says vinyl is supposed to give, but I’d only recommend it for people that are a little more than casually into vinyl or care about the condition of their records in the long term. If you don’t care about either of those things, I’d say go ahead and get this cheap one. It’s a pretty good deal compared to its competitors, which are essentially the same product.
@jawshark87 Honestly, I’m not really into vinyl. I just like the convenience of digital. My wife has a lot of records and her turntable is missing the needle and I’ve had a lot of trouble finding a replacement for her. I figured for 40 bucks this wouldn’t be a bad idea. I had no idea it would destroy her collection though, so thanks for the warning.
@haydesigner my vinyl collection is at 180 records and growing every week. I have old records and new records. From Johnny Cash to a new band whose album just came out last week. Ofcourse i have a nice turntable, stereo reciever, and phono preamp to play it through.
If you have vinyl that you don’t want to kill or if you’re only going to use this at home, I’d suggest against buying this. However, if you don’t care about the quality of your vinyl, your vinyl is already in mediocre condition (like half of my used vinyl), or you’re actually going to take this places (like the first Amazon reviewer), then this is a steal. It’s definitely cheaper than the Crosley units sold at Urban Outfitters, Target, etc. and it’s essentially the same unit.
As a professional disk jockey working all of the hottest children’s birthday parties in town (you may have heard of me, Dee Jay Scratch-N-Sniff, gimme a call!) it’s my job to know quality audio equipment and the Ion Audio Vinyl Motion 3-Speed Belt Drive Suitcase Turntable with Built-In Speakers is in a class of its own. You’ll often hear these clowns on the street talking about how your need ‘Roland this’ or ‘Numark that’ but they’re just posturing. The truth is success as a dee jay is all about the player behind the deck, not the deck itself, these clowns just want to keep real talent like you and me from taking them spotlight away from them.

One of the best features of the Ion Audio Vinyl Motion 3-Speed Belt Drive Suitcase Turntable are Built-In Speakers, with a couple of these puppies you can roll up with nothing more than your turntables and a folding table to set up on, the audio quality is unparalleled! To launchj your career into the stratosphere pick up a couple of these babies from meh.com, you won’t regret it for a moment!
If you really want to impress, wait til the American Lighting LED Rope/Tape Hybrid Lights come up for sale again, get about 10 feet and buy yourself some glue and a styrofoam ball. While you’re ordering, don’t forget to pick up VMP, it’s the best value in professional disk jockey equipment. Good luck with your future career bruh, this is Dee Jay Scratch-n-Sniff, out!
@SHillman Tip: copy anything you sent a bit of effort on into your device’s buffer before clicking “say it”. Here or anywhere online. Then you can paste it back in.
The slash-shrug thing only works when you have VMP turned on. That wouldn’t be enough incentive for me - turned VMP off at the end of January. Deals. On things I want.
They really are junk turntables, but $34 isn’t bad if you’re just interested in playing some old records. It’s not what you want if you’re going to buy brand new albums for $40.

I have collectible Vinyl… I really would like to play some, but the last thing I want to do is shred it/. Yikes, So, Meh…Am 60, I have vinyl from 45 yrs ago…
Yeah this will sound like a glorified transistor radio (if you’re old enough to remember those). Great for kids with records that don’t matter if they get trashed; for any records you care about I would not take a chance on this. But for iffy used records and a portable party, wtf, it’s good enough (just barely) to be a record player.
It’s real use is taking with you to check out used records. A number of my friends are DJs and like to collect rather obscure soul 45s. They carry portables and headphones when they go to sales and swap meets to listen to the unknown.
This product is a complete SHIT SHOW. It’s basically a close n play from the 70’s. The only purpose of this would be to buy for your kids to play with if you have some shitty ass disco or country albums you don’t care about. To think you would buy this to actually take old albums and convert them to digital make about as much sense as masturbating to the image of Bea Arthur. If you had a prized piece of vinyl, that did not have a digital counterpart, you would not use this shit show record player (I can’t even use the word turntable) to play the album with, you would both ruin the album and get a crappy recording. It would be the equivalent of having a movie recorded in quad HD and playing it back on an old tube TV set. Alternatively, if you just have a shitty record collection that you want to make digital, you’re better off downloading those songs already in digital format- they’ll be much better recordings. This is basically a toy to play shitty records on that you don’t care about. If you buy this for that purpose, it make total sense- it’s cheap. If you buy this with the intention of taking that MFSL Master recording of Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon and converting it to digital, then I’ll personally send you that image of Bea Arthur along with a box of kleenex.
Cupla notes: Cartridge type: ceramic (that’s the cheap type) Needle is sapphire, not diamond (that’s the cheap type). “Ripping” software is no doubt “Audacity,” which is freeware. This is not a rig for copying over your virgin vinyl import singles and other precious discs. If it is a beat to hell bunch of old LP’s, fine. I bought one (different shape, same guts) as I needed a special Thanksgiving show (“The Great American Feast” that I kept since I used it in 1980) for another radio show. The unit did the trick. But the tone arm is heavy and cannot be adjusted, so this is a bare-bones unit and NOT for audiophiles or their collections.
Ion doesn’t use Audacity, it uses something much worse: iTunes. The ripping software works alright; the results sound decent enough, but again, with possible damage to your records. SO long as that is not a problem then this unit will convert to mp3s fine. I hate iTunes and the interface with the Ion is a pain in the ass (for me), for someone else it may be easy.
Why is the ability to make this look like a briefcase a feature? Who are these people who need to constantly be listening to vinyl on the go? A record player is like an appliance. I don’t have a waffle maker with wheels on it, or a rice cooker with backpack straps. Why would I want my record player to look like I just leave a shitty briefcase on my table?
It worked for 2.5 hours. That’s it. I opened it, charged it, and used it once. It was fun, but not $39 of fun. Turntable stopped. Battery won’t charge. Meh said to contact ION. ION has yet to address my claim/concern. Horrific customer service. It’s annoying to say the least. Don’t buy this.

Got one last time and it does what it supposed to do.
A non-portable suitcase would be quite the bummer.
Don’t have any records, don’t want to start buying any, so, meh.
But I do have a stomach, so if Meh can grab some of these in a portable suitcase model, I’m in for three.

@madmaxmedia the pops and hisses add to the ambiance.
@madmaxmedia looks like that’s 128 on amazon. I could get almost 3 of these for that price
@Pantheist The AT-120 is definitely a better turntable that will give you the listening experience that everyone says vinyl is supposed to give, but I’d only recommend it for people that are a little more than casually into vinyl or care about the condition of their records in the long term. @haydesigner Sadly, “new” vinyl was digitally mastered, so it’s nothing like original vinyl.
@haydesigner my vinyl collection is at 180 records and growing every week. I have old records and new records. From Johnny Cash to a new band whose album just came out last week. Ofcourse i have a nice turntable, stereo reciever, and phono preamp to play it through.
@RobotSkeleton eh, not all of it. I have some new stuff that was still recorded on tape.

@jawshark87 Yes, and this one comes minus the pretense! (I guess that’s what costs extra at Urban Outfitters.)
Shit turntable. No counterweight = going to destroy your vinyl.
@JazzyJosh
Played my records for 30 years on a turntable with no counterweight.
Only thing I destroyed was my hearing.
And maybe my dignity.
@JazzyJosh As long as you recognize it for what it is (i.e. a cheap, sub-par turntable), I don’t see a problem with it.
@jawshark87 of course. Better to warn with strong words though.
@JazzyJosh Hey man, tape a penny to the tone arm towards its rear and then…Voila!..you now have a counterweight.
The idea of a counterweight is pretty '80s.
Wouldn’t a decent designer just put some heft into the arm itself on the opposite side of the pivot, without strapping on an extra part?
Unless the player had different needle options with a significant mass difference.
@MehnofLaMehncha the fact that you don’t know how shit works is pretty millenial. Why don’t you google shit first https://kb.wisc.edu/wsum/page.php?id=20270
@gak0090

Also have no idea how to make a buggy whip.

I am more interested in buying one to convert vinyl to mp3. Anyone have experience using this one and can contest if the rip quality is decent?
How many shirts can I get in this suitcase and does it meet the personal item or carry on requirements for Spirit Airlines?
From a vinyl guy, these things are garbage. Poor sound, bad tracking(read: ruins records), and just not worth it.

I’m laughing at the idea of a “portable” record player when the vinyls themselves are not really easily portable.
