Today would of been my dad’s birthday. He passed away at 59 because of brain cancer. It’s been years now but I still miss him. I felt like sharing a piece of my life.
Thank you for sharing a piece of your life with us. He will always be a part of your life as long as you preserve within you the memories you had together.
The third and fourth pictures of your dad- with the beard- Stud. And that shirt is cool too. He seems like he would have been a rad guy to have a coffee or a beer with and talk music.
@mick my dad pretty much worked on boats most of his life. When we lived in Norway, he had a boat slip on the island. He would repair and paint local boats.
My mom took a lot of photos back then. I think you could see the love they had for each other in these.
@mick The biggest difference is not that I lived in Norway, it was that I lived on a tiny island. Imagine living in a town with less than a hundred people. To get groceries you had to get in a boat and drive 30 minutes to the main land or call and order them to be delivered by ferry boat.
My school was a mix of first through fifth grade, a whopping seven kids.
Most food was from scratch because it was cheaper and boxed stuff didn’t really exist. The cereal “aisle” at the grocery store had less than five choices. My mom baked four loaves of bread a week and then they still bought another specialty loaf. Breakfast and lunch tended to be all different kinds of sandwiches. We ate fish often because we lived in the North Sea. Friday night was homemade pizza night. Mom baked a cake every week. Friends would drop by suddenly and it was expected to be served coffee and dessert or waffles.
I’m not sure what else to say. It was just very different.
@RiotDemon well, i love fish!!! so i find you lucky. you spell better than me. so there is that from your 7 person school… lol
you were very sheltered on this island… is there more than one island? how long did you live there? did you like it? and why did your family leave ?
in 1960 i was born in canada, moved to jersey in 1967…stayed there a few years ended up in mi.
not quite as captivating as your story !
i love real stories…
@mick funny enough, I don’t eat much fish anymore. It doesn’t taste as good as the fresh stuff my parents made.
There is other islands. Lived there until I was seven. My American grandfather was sick, so we moved to be closer… My mom regrets it. It would be hard to go back, I don’t speak Norwegian anymore.
When I came here, I didn’t know how to write in English. My 2nd grade teacher called my mom in and asked wtf I was writing on the spelling test. Apparently I was translating into Norwegian. It was a tough year. School was scary.
@f00l maybe 6 months. My mom is American. I learned English from the beginning (and from my mom) so I didn’t have an accent or anything. I just didn’t write in English.
I don’t remember any bullying about where I was from. I looked like any typical American.
@RiotDemon That is a stitch that he is using a propane torch. Love it! Glad you have some good memories, as sad and bitter sweet as Wednesday was for you.
Looks like a nice man.
Like. : )
Happy birthday to him!
I’m sorry happy birthday to your pop

@RiotDemon yes… it surely does show.
you spent time growing up in Norway?! that is way exciting!!

i would love to hear what it was like living in Norway!

@RiotDemon
Living on a small island in Norway sounds like it might have been pretty great.
I’m glad you had that growing up. The experience prob made you much more self-sufficient.
Your parents sounds like very interesting and independent-minded people.
I’m really sorry your Dad isn’t still around to share your life.
@RiotDemon well, i love fish!!! so i find you lucky. you spell better than me. so there is that from your 7 person school… lol

@RiotDemon
Wow. How long did it take you to be comfortable in English?
Did you get harassed or bullied in school due to the Norwegian years?
@f00l maybe 6 months. My mom is American. I learned English from the beginning (and from my mom) so I didn’t have an accent or anything. I just didn’t write in English.

thank you for sharing @RiotDemon. he sounds like a wonderful person that was taken far too young.
Thank you for sharing this with us @RiotDemon! Sorry for your loss.
Thank you for sharing. The pictures are lovely!
Sorry he is no longer with you. Birthdays and holidays can be rough…
Do you look like your dad? My dad died many years ago. When I look at his pictures I see so much of him in me, much more than I do my mom.
@Barney I look more like my mom. Here’s a photo from when I was younger. Just like my Pop to light my candles with a propane torch.
@RiotDemon Great photo!
@Barney thanks.
@RiotDemon
Great pix!
Nine Inch Nails!
@medz that was my $45(!) concert memento. I loved that shirt. On the back in similarly sized letters it simply said Fuck.
@RiotDemon
I think your Pop and I would have been thick as thieves.
@RiotDemon That is a stitch that he is using a propane torch. Love it! Glad you have some good memories, as sad and bitter sweet as Wednesday was for you.
Nice photos… Thanks for sharing with us.
Great pics. Looks like he was an interesting character.
Here’s to our parents, and their kids.
Your Dad had the same birthday as my Mom. Good day for excellent people to be born, I guess.
@Pony definitely! Happy birthday to your mom.
@RiotDemon Oh, she’s been gone for 14 years now. This would have been her 106th birthday.
Thanks everyone for the comments. To see so many people get a feeling about my pop’s personality just from a few photos was really nice.
@RiotDemon I was going to post something about pouring out soda pop or a gif of a girl with mentos 2 liter pop, but I didn’t out of respect.
@RiotDemon
Your Dad is one of those people whose personality kinda seems to shine thru.
He comes across as a self-directed, exploring, and curious person, and a great guy to hang around with.
