Images/gifs, help a goat out
9So what the ever loving fuck is up with images? I saw that there’s an issue with getting an error message and having to reload etc, but this sucketh the balls.
I’ve been having issues for some time though. Gifs regularly didn’t work. So how’s the best/simplest for a little old goat to get back on track? I looked at cloudinary but didn’t dig it.
Also, fuck @mfladd

I saw you mention this last week. What specifically is happening for you? What’s not working, etc?
@Thumperchick Gifs just don’t load, and then I saw that imgur doesn’t as well, unless you reload the page? I always used the imgur uploader, but am hoping there’s a different option that works well.
@Thumperchick
What it could look like for my post Bella (with the ‘s’ in ‘https’):
Opening gif in new tab produces this error message:
Refreshing the page helps.
@PlacidPenguin @Thumperchick oh see I never got the error message, so ok gif is good. Images are now on deck
@KittySprinkles @PlacidPenguin Always a good idea to check for that pesky s at the end of http for image tags. Have fun!
@KittySprinkles @Thumperchick
I’ve noticed that removing the ‘s’ from ‘https’ can help.
@PlacidPenguin
@PlacidPenguin well look at that
@KittySprinkles @Thumperchick
As for URLs without ‘https’ attached, well, I guess the problem isn’t there.
@KittySprinkles @PlacidPenguin I’ve found it’s more reliable just to save the image/gif I want rather than hotlinking it.
Find the image you want to steal… er, borrow, right click, choose “Save image as”. Then in your post, simply upload the image as usual. This avoids any future issues which may arise from the image being purged from it’s source as well.

I’ve had issues with imgur displaying on mobile but not computer and vice versa. On the phone, I’ve been able long-press the broken image and open in a new tab, but I get a security error and I have to reload that new tab to see it.
The above looks fine in Chrome on PC. The links lacking the .gif display as hyperlinks which is expected. As PlacidPenguin mentioned, my phone (android chrome browser) doesn’t seem to like the https image links.
Here’s what it looks like on my phone:
And the error I get when I try to open the broken image in a new tab:
When I reload/refresh the new tab, it converts the url to https://m.imgur.com/diMMjlr?r and displays the gif with all the imgur site stuff around it. (not just the image)
So…basically remove the s from https.
@medz
On my Pixel, I use two photo editors.
One for blurring images, and the other for everything else. (Sadly it doesn’t have good photo blurring coding.)
This latter app has a built-in Imgur uploader, so since the problem apparently involves the ‘s’, and I’m willing to bother to use two apps, I guess I could reluctantly remove the letter when uploading images. This way I don’t have to use Cloudinary.
Edit:
Besides, using Cloudinary means I have to delete more text anyways (including the brackets and reference numbers).
@medz
Which won’t work after June when Google’s Chrome will require all sites to be https or get a “Danger! Unsafe site” warning. That will flow to mobile devices and chromebooks pretty quickly.
The problem in the Android mobile (chrome) browser is the mixed mode use of https for meh.com and links to http on the page won’t load (to keep the main https page secure).
I think tinypic.com works here as an alternative to imgur.
@medz @mike808
Except… Http is working. It’s https which is not.
So based on this paragraph, secure pages are not loading so as to keep the main secure page, while unsecure pages WILL work.
@medz @PlacidPenguin
I still think imgur is messing with the requests to prevent direct embedded links from some other site (like meh.com) that doesnt get them any ad revenue and just steals their server’s resources.
Meh isn’t the only websites abusing imgur for hosting images for some other site to profit from without giving them a cut. So they nerf the poachers.
The imgur page returned could also come with some frame blocking and deep link defense (which is what we’re doing here) to fend off folks hosting porn or other TOS violating images on their site.
Honestly, if Imgur doesnt want mehmbers stealing their hosting, drop the auto-embed/linking to them and switch everything to some other site (e.g. tinypic or photobucket or etc.) that allows it.
Or make the imgur filters smarter and auto-proxy/convert to the right format that does work.
Dont know what the right answer is, but shit be broke as is.
