I really hope y'all don't sell a DOCSIS 3.1 Cable modem under $99 soon.
5Spectrum recently upped our D/L Speed from 100Mbps to 400Mbps.
the ol’ trusty Arris SB6121( bought Refurbished in '17) is only DOCSIS 3.0, and wouldn’t support the new speed…
did a little research, settled on a Refurbished Netgear CM1200 from Amazon (Sold by Woot!) for $99.
it came today, hooked it up and activated, and WOW! My D/L speed is now 4x faster. (upload is still a paltry 11Mbps)
this whole broadband thing is pretty neat!

Brag brag brag
Just because you think you’re so much better than people who still use an acoustic coupler
/image acoustic coupler
@f00l 300 baud, baby! Had one for my Apple IIe.
@capnjb
Yeah thought it was pretty cool. Also enjoyed having dibs on the phone.
Just about the only major upside I saw to the pandemic was the massive growth in internet service availability in the relatively rural area I live in. When I first moved up here about 7 years ago, my only option was satellite (I had been assured DSL was available prior to the move). A couple years after that, I was able to get a cellular connection which was vastly superior but still occasionally worse than that acoustic coupler. Now I’ve got fiber to the premises with symmetrical gigabit, and even dropping down to 400Mbps would probably be a deal breaker for me.
@Aspirant_Fool this is about the best i can get here… now the hick town 10 mi west of me can get symmetrical gig fiber for about the same money…
I must be getting too old. Every time I have to shop for a new service, because the promo pricing expired, I’m asking what the slowest rate is. The only times I even cared about the page loading 2ms faster was when the IRKs were a challenge of your luck and reaction time rather than wallet size.
KuoH
@kuoh My household has two people working from home. One of us is ALWAYS on voice calls with screenshares and the other is SOMETIMES on video calls at the same time. We both stream and game, though neither of us is into FPS.
And we’ve always done fine at the lowest tier. Unless someone has a torrent-based pirating business* or five kids being babysat by five different video streams, I just don’t understand what drives demand for higher tiers.
* Back in 2006, it took me about six months to figure out why my new coworkers were always complaining about hard drive reliability.
@kuoh with spectrum’s new lineup, this IS the slowest they offer. they bumped us up b/c they upped their lowest tier, but our old modem didn’t support the new speed. ( and It was a refurb i bought in '17…we were due for a new one anyway.)
@whogots My Bestie and his Hubs always pay for the Fastest available*, as they both Game, and Hubs does the occasional twitch stream
*they pay for the fastest internet they can, and then connect EVERYTHING over wifi…no cable runs anywhere in their house… i don’t get it…
I’ve run Minimum Cat 5e (off the shelf patch cords up to 50ft) to most of the Devices in the house.
Modem->Router-> 8 port switch, which feeds:
1 PC, Ooma,2 more 8 port switches*, and a second Router in my Bedroom on the Far side of the house that Feeds a Tivo Mini, My main PC, Xbox 1, and another Smart TV
Switch 2 feeds to a Smart TV, Blu-ray player, and Tivo Bolt
Switch 3 feeds to a Tivo Mini, my old Xbox 360, and My Plex Server
*( yes, a footnote to the footnote!)
I only got the 8 port switches B/C they were on sale for $15, vs around $30 for a 5 port…
They’ve never sold a cable modem here. I don’t think you have to worry.
