"I never knew I needed that!"
13Does that every happen to anyone else? You’re just swimming along in life and see a link somewhere, or get a catalog in the mail and out curiosity, click on the link or read through the catalog and think “wow, I never knew that was thing! I really could use that!”
Right now my interest has been piqued by so many of the offerings over at thingiverse (3D printing stuff). This week I made two bobbin holders and a thread holder. Right now, I’m printing out another bobbin holder and after that, another thread holder (sending to a friend).
And another pop top can opener! Those things are awesome!
I have dusting and vacuuming to do, but, geez…look at all of these things I need…
What’s your “I really need that” widget?

POKER! JOKER! NOT MEDIOCRE! AWESOME!
mostly kitchen stuff… 2 of my favorites
@chienfou
I bought one of those garlic peelers a while ago but I found it to be more hassle than it’s worth and it’s just faster to peel garlic buy hand even when I need to peel a bunch.
@Star2236
Wow… that’s totally a different experience than I have had. Bought mine at DollarTree (2 in a package) and just LOVE mine. Even the most stubborn skins peel right off…
Oh well as they say “YMMV”.
@chienfou
Goes to show you, mine was an expensive Martha Stewart one.
@Star2236 yeah, looking at the pic I posted, I see that there are ‘nubs’ inside that one. The inside of mine are smotth. I think the silicone sticking to the skins is what peels them off. I suppose you might be able to turn them inside out…
After all, this isn’t a French tickler we’re talkin’ about !
@chienfou
From what I remember the inside of mine was smooth too. The problem I always had, was all the garlic peels would get stuck in the inside and when i went to do the next garlic they would stick to that one. So even though it did peel the garlic, it still left garlic peels all over garlic I had to pick off. That’s why I gave up on it.
@chienfou @Star2236 I just put it under the chefs knife and smack it hard…
@Star2236 @unksol That works, but these allow you to keep them intact/not smushed, which is handy for putting into leg of lamb, pork roasts etc. for flavoring
@chienfou @Star2236 don’t have an issue peeling for that but I should also buy garlic more often.
@Star2236 @unksol
Especially this time of year what with the vampires and all…
Labeler. It’s just so much cleaner than my
scribbleswriting.After I bought my house, a cordless impact driver. That meant no more struggling to drive longer screws or lag bolts. On Prime Day, I picked up a new Skil PwrCore 12 set which uses a brushless motor. The right angle impact can get into tighter spots and the drill is more compact, but still with a 1/2" chuck. It’s performing better than the 18V Porter Cable I’ve been using.
@narfcake How’s the battery on that? I’ve been looking for a good cordless!
@Tadlem43 I haven’t put it to any serious work yet, but I imagine it’s fine. If I run out of juice, it can recharge to 25% in 5 minutes.
Toolguyd was really impressed with the drill’s power, as it outperformed some 18V/20V drills.
https://toolguyd.com/skil-pwrcore-12-brushless-drill-review/
@narfcake That’s a great review! I’m going to check this out. Thanks for the info!!
@Tadlem43 The ouch is that it’s no longer on sale. It was $80 on Prime Day; currently, it’s $158.

The drill/circular saw kit is on sale for $100, though.
https://smile.amazon.com/SKIL-2-Tool-Kit-Brushless-Cordless/dp/B07MWSB6M8
@narfcake Isn’t this it?
https://www.amazon.com/PWRCore-Brushless-Cordless-Lithium-Battery/dp/B07F23NMFM/ref=sr_1_8_mod_primary_new?dchild=1&keywords=Skil+PwrCore+12+drill+kit&qid=1603657136&sbo=RZvfv%2F%2FHxDF%2BO5021pAnSA%3D%3D&sr=8-8 I don’t need the impact driver.
@Tadlem43 The drill alone, yes. The ouch would be the current price; it’s been on sale before and Woot offered the 20V brushless for around the same not too long ago.
https://www.woot.com/offers/20v-drill-driver-kit-with-standard-charger
@narfcake Ah… ok. I’ll keep my eye out for a lower price, esp. with the holidays coming up.
I do appreciate the info!
@Tadlem43 The home improvement chains tend to offer a lot of deals around this time of year, as the manufacturers really aren’t just looking to sell you a drill set. Instead, they’re looking to sell the users a battery system, as owners of one set will tend to buy additional tools that use the same system. That’s where the major brands like Dewalt and Milwaukee have an edge – they tend to offer long term support of the same battery system.
Meh and Thingiverse are two of my biggest “didn’t know I needed that!” rabbit holes.
Favorite 3D print is probably a supersized Lego Ninjago I made for my oldest granddaughter a couple of years ago.
The one used everyday is a little doohickey that fastens over a lightswitch to keep it from getting turned off/on by accident.
I also love moving math/ engineering constructs. First things I ever printed were nautilus gears and a couple of iris boxes.
@mehcuda67
Can you buy already printed stuff of Thingiverse, or is the site just for you to search designs and print yourself? If so, how do you buy them? I’ve looked at it before and always thought the stuff was really cool but I don’t have one of those printers.
@mehcuda67 @Star2236
It’s been mentioned here before that some libraries actually have 3D printers you can use…I haven’t checked that out since I live in a small town with a tiny library, but it might be worth checking out if you are in a metro area or near a university or college campus.
@chienfou @mehcuda67
What are they called? All are library’s are still closed and even colleges around here are all online still.
@chienfou @Star2236 there are online printing places that will print stuff for you. I can’t recommend one specifically. Honestly if there was something you were really interested in, I’d ask here if someone can look at the file and see how much money in filament and how long it would take to print to kind of get an idea of you are getting ripped off.
My library only charges for the actual filament used and not the time it takes to set up and print.
I asked here for advice on printing some items and I got pricing from someone here willing to do it. It sparked a discussion and next thing I know, I bought a printer.
@RiotDemon @Star2236
That’ll teach ya!!
@chienfou @RiotDemon @Star2236 Whew, it’s a quickly growing industry. I noticed that Thingiverse has some print services mentioned in its app collection. https://www.thingiverse.com/apps
All3dp has an article on the best 3d printing services https://all3dp.com/1/best-online-3d-printing-service-3d-print-services/
and also has a link to something called Craftcloud that looks like it will let you compare services to do prints for you. I’m sure you could find a whole bunch in your area just by online searching for 3D print services.
I’ve never tried any print services, because the challenges of making a difficult print work are a big part of what I’m looking for in the first place. (I would however, gladly suspend my technical snobbery to have something printed in metal, crystal clear plastic, high temperature reinforced plastics, multiple colors or other exotic materials or techniques that I can’t do (yet)).
@chienfou @mehcuda67 @Star2236 You can try looking for a “maker space” near you.
Now I need these things! Which bobbin and thread holders did you choose?
@callow I started small for both. My sewing machine has a little drawer, so I had to be mindful of the size I made. I made two for bobbins.
They do have a bobbin holder that has a lid! But for right now, I think this one will do (but I made two for me…now all my bobbins have a home). And this is the spool holder. There’s another one I downloaded that has customizations (you print a base and pegs separately), but this one will do for now.
What I made for my friend (the one on its side is the pop top opener, this one takes a little over an hour to print)
And my newly organized drawer. One spool holder and two bobbin holders.
Thingiverse…the nice thing is it’s free!
@lisaviolet Very neat and organized!
This gadget holds a threaded bobbin to the matching spools of thread is a great idea! Wonder if it would work with cones of thread.
pin
@lisaviolet Found bigger ones. Sent a request to my 3D man for a few.
@callow I like that gadget! There was another spool holder print I liked, but I didn’t think I needed it at this point. Modular. You can make multiple bases that snap together and you can choose the size of the pegs that hold the spools. Those also snap into the base.
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2630378
@lisaviolet The problem with the bobbins on the thread cones is I have two machines that use different size bobbins. This is how I organize each size and the cones right now .
@callow First world problems, am I right? lol
I have another machine that I never set up. It’s an embroidery machine and the price was right and I just had to have it.
But I never used it. That was back when we had more dollars than sense. I’m smarter about this stuff now.
@callow @lisaviolet You can make a TON of money doing embroidery! You should dig that thing out and put it work! You’d make more than at most full time jobs.
I used to do screen printing, pad printing, and sell tee’s, etc. and advertising promo items. When I needed something embroidered, I was shocked at the mark-up those folks had, esp. on small runs. Great money!
@lisaviolet @Tadlem43 An old friend offered to give me an embroidery machine if I pay the shipping, I decided against it. (Lack of space and time to learn it) I make custom window treatments and soft furnishings and never have requests for embroidery.
@callow Sorry…my comment was meant more for lisaviolet since she said she had a machine.
You have to advertise for it, but just contacting any screen printer and letting them know you can do it will bring in requests. You don’t really have to advertise more than that. I was always looking for embroidery folks, for back up, if nothing else.
It was just a thought.
@Tadlem43 I understood you were talking to her. I was just sharing my experience too.
A chainsaw!
@blaineg I just get some of these for the Sawzall. If I need something bigger, then I go to the chainsaw.
example from Amazon
@G1 Sure, I’ve got a sawzall, but Teeny Chainsaw!
Refrigerator. You know…
Last November I read an article online somewhere along the lines of “I know you should never buy an appliance that does one thing but I love my soupmaker so much” and thought, I’d like an automatic soup maker that only makes soup. But they’re pricey and kind of stupid, as they only make soup, and I already have multiple ways to make soup. So I put one on my amazon shopping list, just to remember, and did nothing about it. Last week I was at a T.J.Maxx/Homegoods, turned a corner, and what did I see on an endcap? Why, a Philips soupmaker at a very reasonable price! So, I bought it. It makes soup. It also allegedly makes compote, hot chocolate and smoothies, but that could be like the rice wine setting on my bread machine (purely theoretical, and also poorly understood by me). I have only made pureed soup in it so far. It makes good soup, all in one pot, doesn’t take up a lot of space, no hot burners, no stirring or setting a timer, no pouring it into a blender. It’s stupid and unnecessary, but I love it so far.
@mossygreen That actually does look like a neat gadget! And doesn’t take up a lot of counter space, which is cool.
I’ve wanted a Dustbuster for a while and I filled out an application to be a product tester on holife and got approved to test this
https://www.amazon.com/Holife-Handheld-Cordless-Rechargeable-Lightweight/dp/B085HF8STT
Has anybody ever herd or participated in product testing from holife?
@Star2236 I’m not a ho, so I’m not into that life.
@ELUNO @Star2236 Now, now, don’t judge.
@Star2236 I’ve never done it, but I’d love to. Was it hard to get started with them?
@Tadlem43
No, you have to buy the product and review it before they reimburse you so that’s why I was asking if anybody herd of it before. I haven’t bought it yet, I’m going to this week.
@Star2236 seems like it might be an end run around Amazon review policies, but I bet you do get what they say.
I get offers in email regularly to buy a product and get reimbursed via PayPal. This seems more legit than those, in that you applied for it and you know who it is. I don’t trust any of the people who pop into my email offering that at all.
@Star2236 @Tadlem43 It looks similar to this one. I got this in June, just to get the fuzz in the office that accumulates behind the equipment and it’s great.
I use it between big vacuums for the fuzz throughout the house (we have a dozen pets and no carpeting). And when it was so hot and humid here last month, we had a bunch of flies (no idea where they came from) and I used it to vacuum them up when they were banging against the windows. A lot easier than trying to smash them or electrocute them with the bug swatter zapper thing. I’d take it outside and empty it. No mess.
So, I say go for it, if you haven’t already.
@lisaviolet @Tadlem43
Thanks for the advice, I’m doing it
The existence/recipe of garlic confit.
I think the tagline of the Johnson Smith Co. catalog was “Things you never knew existed”
@DrWorm There was a catalog with that name, and you know what? I really DIDN’T know most of those things existed. lol
@DrWorm Dang, I haven’t thought about the Johnson Smith Co. catalog in AGES. Loved looking through those. Thx for bringing back memories…
@Doooood @DrWorm
Tops on the list… the Johnson Smith Co…
@DrWorm I used to get that catalog. I got a lot of catalogs.
Very funny thing I wonder where else it can be used in the household.
