I need to buy a specific thing to complete a thing I have...
5…and someone is selling the exact thing I need on mercari. It is an unusual item and this is the first one I’ve seen for sale (I’ve only been intermittently looking for a few years, so maybe they show up occasionally, I don’t know). I’ve never bought anything on mercari and am not sure about signing up for another site to just buy one thing one time. Even though, again, it’s not a normal thing that you can just find places. Although I did find most of the rest of it randomly at a Goodwill for ridiculously cheap, so maybe I just need to wait for up to the rest of my life.
Anyway, anyone have experience with mercari? Is it OK?

I have no experience with Mercari, but I need to know what the specific thing to complete a thing could be. Enquiring minds want to know.
@heartny I’m trying to not draw so much of the universe’s attention before I decide on a definite course of action. And I oversold it a little bit, to COMPLETE the thing I’ll need a few more items, but those I can substitute/fabricate. This… not so much. Also it might be broken. I will post pictures if I go ahead with it, of course.
I’ve bought a couple of things from them; it was fine. Similar to Ebay but no bidding. Almost exactly like Poshmark, if you’ve ever bought from that.
Expect emails pestering you to sign up your friends. Emails advertising things you ‘might be interested in’. And, occasionally, emails offering coupons.
Everything I’ve bought has been exactly as advertised, I’ve never had a problem with the buying experience, so I can’t comment on conflict resolution.
@Nate311 Yeah, I noticed the signing-up-friends thing just poking around the site. Wait, should I get an invite from you or some else? Is there a discount?
@mossygreen @Nate311
I’ll send you one.
@Kyeh @Nate311 Oooh!
They tend to be cheaper than poshmark or eBay but otherwise seem similar. Some sellers have the same item listed on more than one place. The junk mail load is about average from them. If you don’t want to deal with that create a buying only email address.
I need a thing to thing the thing I need in order to complete the thing that does the thing I like so I can thing.
/giphy thing
@f00l I like your thing.
@blaineg @f00l Good thing!
/showme the thing mossygreen needs
@Cerridwyn The color family is spot-on, although this probably doesn’t glow in the dark.
@mossygreen I honestly laughed out loud and how good of a job the bot did for that one
@Cerridwyn @mossygreen is it radium glass?
/showme a penguin attacking someone with a thing.
@mediocrebot boo… that doesn’t look like the penguin is attacking the person.
@mediocrebot @OnionSoup
but I do like that (literally) the person has the thing… not the penguin using it as a weapon…
/showme an evil penguin attacking someone with a thing
@mediocrebot that’s more like it.
@mediocrebot that penguin is in trouble
@mediocrebot That’s a penguin you can respect.
@blaineg @mediocrebot oh come on. You know her hidden forearm guard is going to shatter his sword, then she is going to round clock him.
Then the Tardis is going to phase in. It’s new years FFS
Read the descriptions, look for ommisions. I bought a pair of what I thought were doc martens because it showed up during a search of docs, she said it fits like docs in the description, but didn’t say what brand they actually were. (Or show the brand name in the pictures).
They were not docs.
Mercari sided with the seller simply because even though it was implied they were docs, she never outright said they were docs.
So, buyer beware more so than eBay simply because ebay tends to side with the buyer more often than the seller.
Mercari seems just like Ebay to me. I’ve bought a number of things with no problem, mostly used video game carts, and scale model kits.
I tend to go for “buy it now” on ebay more than auctions.
I have bought and sold. I have not run across any problems yet but I have not had many transactions. I would be willing to purchase a random thing and send it to you if you decide to go for it.
Read the description carefully and check the photos. You can request more information if you have questions before purchasing. Often if I “like” something, I get an email with a lower price for a limited time. You can also offer a lower price outright.
Less experienced accounts like mine have the funds held until the package is delivered and you leave positive feedback. A few days after delivery if there is no feedback the funds are automatically released.
Personally I say go for it if it’s one of those things you might not ever see again!
My view on sites like Mercari, Letgo, Wallapop, etc. is they’re all Craigslist wannabes and I don’t bother with them because I see them as redundant.
I am not familiar with all of these. But the scams that will be employed should be pretty well known. Unfortunately despite them being around for decades x% still falls for it which is worth the cost/benefit to the scammers. Older people get sucked in too.
YouTube has constant scam adds and won’t crack down or takes forever. And that’s Google. Nothing is ever going to stop it without regulation.
The whole “whoops I overpaid you send a check for the difference and we are good” scam has been going on for decades
So @mossygreen, did you buy the thing?
@Kyeh NOT YET. But it’s still there. I bought a Wombles sewing pattern on ebay as part of an elaborate plan to approach the thing without being detected, site by site.
@mossygreen Well, that’s intriguing!
I’m so curious to finally see what you’re up to!
OH GOD I DIDN’T BUY IT AND IT SOLD AND I MAY NEVER SEE ANOTHER ONE REASONABLY PRICED AND I HATE MYSELF SO MUCH.
@mossygreen Are you going to reveal what it was?!
@mossygreen Show us your thing. Maybe someone here knows where you can get one reasonably priced.
@heartny @mossygreen Or maybe even has one they’re willing to part with!
@heartny @Kyeh It was this. I’m so sad and angry at myself. I’m also totally overreacting.

@heartny @mossygreen Wow! Pretty fantastic. I have a friend whose husband collects and sells vintage toys. I’ll send a picture and ask him to keep an eye out for one.
@heartny @Kyeh Aw, thank! I have the base, I have the box, a marble just has to be the right size, I think I found a pdf of the directions that I thought I could use to make replacement cards (can’t find the link now, worried now). It’s silly I didn’t just buy it immediately.
@heartny @Kyeh @mossygreen Currently $78 for one on eBay. That seems a bit high.
@mossygreen
Okay, I just texted her to ask.
@mossygreen Oh, I had that game! Long gone by now though
@heartny Ooh, so close!
@Kyeh If you find me one I will owe you something so incredibly weird I don’t know what it would be.
@mossygreen My friend said her husband “has parts, too, but not complete” and he pointed out this one on EBay that’s a bit less $$ than some of the others.

I told her you have some of it already; she said she’ll ask what he has and if he wants to sell. I haven’t heard back since then. 🫤
@Kyeh Well, wheels are in motion, psychologically at least. I should have faith and act as if it’s a sure thing (somehow, someday). Make the cards for it, maybe. I always wanted to print out a set using the Hurley and Horler New Tarot instead of whatever royalty-free set they used.
@mossygreen And now that you’ve talked about it here, anyone who spots one at a thrift store or garage sale will know you’re seeking one! I’ll certainly be looking if I go to any.
@Kyeh Yes, EVERYONE WHO READ/SKIMMED/SAW THE TITLE OF THIS TOPIC IS NOW SHOPPING FOR ME. THIS IS BINDING. But the good news is, I’m potentially shopping for you, too!
@Kyeh @mossygreen I’M ON IT.
