I need a new knife (stupid me, damn TSA)
7Hey Meh,
So the TSA confiscated my Kershaw Onion I’d purchased from you because I’m a dumb-ass who accidentally brought it to the airport.
Can I has another? And by “has,” I mean "please purchase one on a very soon Meh offering?’
K,
Thanks.

@Ocifersven
Yeah, been there done that. I felt like such a fool. Fortunately, I realized it when I was on the security line so I handed it to the TSA agent and it didn’t make the metal detector go off. I loved that knife and I still haven’t gotten over it even though I’ve replaced it.
@bsci87 I don’t understand how someone hasn’t started a business by running a kiosk right near the empty-your-pockets lines that will mail your stuff back to you.
@Pantheist Yes that would make sense except airport rent is probably really steep.
@Pantheist Actually, I was directed to a mailbox that was a short distance away that I could mail the knife to myself so the TSA person was very nice about that. The problem was that I was flying with my young son and the security line was about 45 minutes long. So either get out of line, mail it to myself, get back in line and miss the flight or just give up the knife. I just gave it up and my son still calls me a dope! Why does he have such a long memory when I don’t want him remembering that? D’oh!!!
Meh hasn’t had a Kershaw in a while.
@awk Please no. Kershaws are junk.
Had a micro multi-tool confiscated a few years ago. The blade was about 1" long if that. Totally forgot I had it in my purse. Told me I could keep it if I mailed it to myself which required getting out of the security line, going up to the mailing area upstairs and going back thru the whole security line. At DIA (Denver) with only one line for the entire terminal - no way I would make my flight.
Yeah we need more knives! Every time I get 2 I loose the second one lol
@ragingredd So umm… just buy one. You’ll save money and you won’t lose the second one.
@cinoclav meh does like to sell them in pairs
You’ll eventually come across some at www.knivesandspeakerdocks.com
I accidentally/successfully smuggled a little folding utility knife past TSA one time. (Forgot I had it with me - stuck it in my carry on backpack and tried not to look guilty.) But I’ve also had a mini-multitool confiscated.
@walarney my friend had to surrender his Leatherman on our recent trip to Florida. I accidentally smuggled a full sized pair of scissors in my carry on bag once. I had a laptop, a camera, two handheld media viewers and all their cables in a laptop bag. In the confusion of having to power up every device, no one, including me, noticed the scissors in the bottom of the cables pocket. My previous trip had been by car and I’d worked on crafts during the ride and never taken the scissors out of the bag. It’s mostly security theater anyway.
@moondrake ur friend might b the same as my dad! same trip, same knife… do we know each other?
@sunderbug I am pretty sure my friend has no kids. His first name is Steve.
@moondrake Friend!
@walarney My wife and I were at PDX catching a connecting flight. I opened a compartment of my backpack and realized my Swiss Army knife was in it. Luckily we were already in a secure area so I didn’t have to go through security to get it on our second flight.
@walarney I once lent my friend a hunting knife. Coming back from France during a time with “increased screening”. They held me for 30 minutes because they wanted to examine my boots more closely. Once we were on the plane she whipped the knife out and said “oh, I forgot to give this back to you!”
@Pantheist Many years ago I had a large rock I was bringing back from England where I had been working (worked for outward bound - picked it up when we stopped near a disused quarry; we all gathered up cool rocks and for the rest of the trip there was a pile of rock left behind at each rest stop LOL). For reasons unknown they searched all of us, made the guy in front of me unwind his head turban… They saw my rock in my carry on and asked me if I planned to hit the pilot over the head with it. I told them they were out of their minds, I carried that rock all over England and had it in my carry on so it wouldn’t break. I sure as heck wasn’t going to risk breaking it by hitting the pilot with it. They let me keep it.
Don’t blame the TSA, friend. Given the instant and violent passenger response to previous attacks (shoe and underwear bombers), the TSA was actually going to remove the restriction on short pocket knives. There was a public outcry, and the restriction remains. The TSA is not to blame. We, as a people, are to blame.
@givemeyoursoul I don’t remember reading about that. How violent did the passengers get?
When did the TSA say that they were going to let knives back on flights?
@givemeyoursoul I’m gonna go ahead and blame the TSA, thanks.
@G1 When you think you’re going to die, you don’t sit in your seat and wait for it. The U93 passengers who fought back only did so when they found out the other planes had crashed. You can expect people to respond to hijacking attempts for at least a few more decades, before we all forget. As for the knives: http://www.cnn.com/2013/06/05/travel/tsa-knives/
@givemeyoursoul - i think another alternative would be for tsa to hand everyone a weapon upon entering tge plane- then when 1 idiot stands up and starts shooting, stabbing… 200 other weapons will be used on them… lol - meh could sell them enmass!!
@sunderbug I fully endorse it, let’s try it at once!
@givemeyoursoul yep, I remember this and got all excited since I also have lost pocketknives to the TSA on occasion. REALLY disappointed that the airlines and flight crew unions pitched a fit and the TSA backed down.
I remember one time being in line for an inter-island hop in Hawaii with my elderly parents (took them there to celebrate Dad’s 80th and my 50th). Standing in line I put my hands in my pockets and felt my small (cheap) pocketknife and thought …“crap, there goes another”.
Knowing my dad almost always had one as well I asked him for his and promptly tossed both in the TSA ‘surrender’ bin. Unfortunately his was a souvenir from his employer and he was a bit disconcerted to say the least…
Walmart has the Kershaw Pico on sale currently for $13 with free in store pickup. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Kershaw-Pico-Pocket-Knife-Silver/55134419?u1=j0ul0pwgca00sr700009i&oid=487159.1
Kershaw Hotwire also there under $10 https://www.walmart.com/ip/Kershaw-1310WM-Hotwire-Knife/54997842
That sucks. Kershaw makes some nice EDC knives, if you spend the money for an American one.
I had a small Kershaw that was still in my damn carry-on bag.
I wondered why they scanned my bag twice & when I got to my destination, I found my knife still in the bag. Damn. I’m not trying to fly home with it & it’s only one of their cheaper $20 knives. I gave it to my oldest Grandkid as a gift.
I’m just glad TSA didn’t shoot me in the head & display my dead body in the airport.

I think it should be allowed to check knives and other small items at the screening area. They could sell tamper resistant envelopes that you could write your name on and these could be stored in a secure area of the flight. Extra cash for security, you get to keep the stuff.
@speediedelivery good idea for unloaded firearms too. I was very concerned for my conceal carry piece in the checked luggage. It was locked in a safe that was secured to the guts of the suitcase, but still… Fortunately, it made it there and back no problem. The hard-sided suitcase, however, got a large crack and lost a rubber foot. Time to retire it.
