I miss salads!
11I shopped yesterday, and really hoped romaine would be back by now. Guess I could get iceberg, but it’s just not the same. Spinach is better cooked and Costco doesn’t carry other types of lettuce.
I’m on a mission today to find butter lettuce or something as good.
How are you coping?

Lettuce is only a vessel to deliver delicious ranch or other dressings to my face.
I like to add grape tomatoes, a little red onion, sunflower seeds, and often hardboiled egg to make a filling salad. Also avocado if I have it.
Been experimenting with different vinegars - Trader Joe’s Gourmet Orange Muscat Champagne Vinegar is my current favorite. So orangey good!
@kdemo What difference does it make what size the red onion is? If it’s a big red onion, just add less of it to the salad and you’ll be all set.
You’re welcome.
@kdemo Get the butter lettuce from TJ’s. It’s worth the splurge when romaine isn’t available.
@kdemo
https://nuvooliveoil.com/
@pitamuffin - That’s actually my plan. Didn’t make it today though. It’s good, tender instead of crisp.
@Cerridwyn - Unicorn tears? Vampire killer? Lol!
Looks great, but a bit beyond my $ comfort zone.
The blends look awesome!
@kdemo
they are, but their olive oil is overall awesome, the best I’ve ever had.
And Josh is great, they actually go to our local farmer’s market, and I’m addicted.
The blood orange is good for making a blend of carrots, onions and apples as a side dish. I cook a lot with the olive.
My current favorite is myer lemon olive oil and green apple balsamic (not on the site yet) with a bit of ginger, shake and pour
With pasta.
It’s going great.
Spinach
Napa Cabbage
Iceberg
Kale
All are better the romaine
@CaptAmehrican - I made kale chips that were really good. You have to massage the kale leaves to eat it raw, right?
I get most of those, but iceberg? Must have been a typo.
@kdemo i am too lazy to massage. I shred my kale in a food processor
@CaptAmehrican I agree with those with the exception of Iceburg. Iceburg to me is pointless, no flavour, it’s like biting solid pale green water.
@CaptAmehrican @kdemo I love kale chips but they make my entire house stink.
@CaptAmehrican @OnionSoup
Iceberg is good for a wedge salad.
Blue cheese dressing, and bacon crumbles.
Good to go every now and then to mix it up.
I prefer spinach as I feel it has more health benefits. Also if I buy a big package and can’t use it fast enough I can cook it. So the romaine shortage has kind of been working out for me as restaurants that would use it are okay using spinach instead, and a couple of stores have put spinach on good sales. When I read your header I thought you must have started a keto diet, as it’s very hard on veggie lovers.
@moondrake - Spinach is def healthier, but I like crispier salad. I use spinach with eggs and in lots of recipes. I add spinach or broccoli to mac and cheese to up the nutrition.
Sometimes I crave salad for breakfast.
FDA updated on Monday: https://www.cnn.com/2018/11/28/health/romaine-lettuce-update-fda-bn/index.html
“Only the California counties of Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and Ventura are being investigated…”
Am surprised supermarkets have not refilled shelves… may have to do with new standards for labeling from the FDA.
@fjp999 - Yuck, E. coli sounds brutal.
Maybe the supply chain has to catch up, or maybe they have to grow more before they can ship it?
@kdemo it’s all about labeling… if the mixes had origins for each part of the mix they could restore all the non cali sourced ones.
I like leaf lettuce- especially the red stuff.
@sammydog01 - My favorite is the mini romaine heads I’ve only seen at Costco. Leaves are just the right size for sandwiches, and one head makes a good sized salad for one.
The green leaf lettuce is good. That’s what I’m using right now instead of Romaine. But… I like spring mix also. I mix it all up and I love the Pea shoots microgreens that Whole foods has.
@lseeber - Wish we had a Whole Foods around. Spring mix seems to be missing from store shelves around here too - must be more demand as substitution.
@kdemo I think maybe spring mix has baby romaine in it because it all disappered here too.
@kdemo @sammydog01 Well, they still have spring mix here so some of them don’t. I do recall some that did tho. But yeah it’s disappearing off the shelves fast here because of the lack of romaine, I’m sure.
@kdemo Yeah… it’s nice. I have a few of that type store available now (since I moved a few months ago) but never did until now.
@JT954 -
More for me.
@kdemo We were on a loooong road trip last week and I couldn’t get a salad at the usual places.
/giphy I was sad
@sammydog01 - Tragedy! Poor baby.
Maybe Santa will fill our stockings with juicy crispy romaine heads?
For Thanksgiving I mixed iceberg for the crunch and baby spinach for the nutrients.
The real shitty thing was that I was growing my own romaine and butter lettuces but we had some extra hot weather so it all bolted to seed and was super bitter.
@RiotDemon - Sorry about your garden. I imagine growing lettuce in Fla is trickier than most places. Bet most other veggies grow well though?
I heard a hydroponic grower from Canada on the radio saying their lettuce was safe. Maybe that’s the way to go.
@kdemo @RiotDemon I’ve been thinking about moving to Trudeau country anyway. This is interesting.
@kdemo this is definitely a learning experience for me. I lost all my squash and zucchini plants as well. Apparently the packet that tells me when to grow is not good enough. Cuz it was just way too hot. But I’m going to try again now that it’s getting a little cooler.
I’m not sure what gives the romaine ecoli. Maybe it’s the water in the certain counties? Or is it the fertilizer? As far as I know most homegrown things are usually okay.
@kdemo @RiotDemon I think it’s the poop.
@RiotDemon @sammydog01 - Yup, you’re both right. Manure or poop, and it can contaminate irrigation water as well.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2018/04/26/why-e-coli-keeps-getting-into-our-lettuce/?utm_term=.ace422138644
Butter crunch is always good.
@cranky1950 - I don’t know that one. Wonder if it’s the one I know as butter lettuce?
@cranky1950 @kdemo
/image butter crunch
Yeah, that’s way better than romaine.
@sammydog01 - Gonna have to agree with you there.
@cranky1950 !Buttercrunch Lettuce
@cranky1950 Buttercrunch
@cranky1950 Mout butter lettuce
@cranky1950 Buttercrunch
@cranky1950 In Ohio, they roll a lettuce leaf, dunk it into cider vinegar, and sprinkle it with sugar, then repeat. Yum.
@cranky1950 Yup.
Buttercrunch is best!
Mix in some spinach and/or leaf lettuce.
Some onion, carrot, radish and maybe some black olives.
Cover in Roquefort or ranch dressing.
Crunchy bits of something on top.
Hmmm… maybe some bacon bits?
who needs lettuce?
favorite root veggies:
carrots
turnips
radishes
whatever
sliced thinish
toss with green onion, apples, blueberries (strawberries in the summer)
dressing is lime olive oil and strawberry dark balsamic
make it a meal by tossing in shrimp cooked in garlic olive oil for that savory /sweet mixture
@Cerridwyn - What time is dinner? I can be there shortly.
I just bookmarked a recipe for a radish salad - been meaning to try it.
@kdemo
@kdemo and it looks yummy
share the link
@Cerridwyn @kdemo Trader Joe’s makes a wonderful quinoa cranberry apple crunch salad.
@kdemo @OldCatLady
I am terribly not a fan of quinoa. But if our trader joes wasn’t a dump, i might peak.
I buy most of my fruits and veggies locally grown at the farmers market (except stuff like potatoes, bananas that don’t grow here). It’s so much nicer fresh and a some grow heirloom varieties.
Used to have an heirloom tomato grower, made eating tomatoes worth while.
we have a guy now that does a protein sprout mixture that adds such nice crunch. He does microgreens and young lettuces, both of which are quite delicious.
@Cerridwyn - The image wasn’t the radish salad. It is called Christmas Tree Salad - I just used an image I found, but I did manage to locate a recipe for you:
http://kblog.lunchboxbunch.com/2012/12/christmas-tree-salad-pomegranate-pecans.html
Interestingly, it calls for frozen grapes which help keep the salad cold. Cool tip!!
@Cerridwyn @OldCatLady - I will look for that. This one is great as well:
@kdemo
Facinating
still wouldn’t mind seeing a radish salad recipe
@Cerridwyn Very underwhelming after all the salad talk here.
https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/sunny-anderson/radish-salad-recipe-1925619
I’m sure it needs cucumbers, at least.
@kdemo
very simple but probably good
Use different radish types to change the flavor up a bit
I’m not a cuke fan, but I’d add blueberries
Had a recipe for hot beef salad saved for a year or so and never tried it. Have since lost it
it wasn’t this one:
https://www.thekitchn.com/recipe-jeffrey-alford-amp-naomi-duguids-lettuce-salad-with-hot-beef-dressing-recipes-from-the-kitchn-218920
but it is close. the one i had was simplier
I usually opt for pasta salads and sushi when decent lettuce isn’t readily available, or commodity priced.
Had a great salad last night. Found some mixed greens that are about the freshest pre packaged ones I’ve seen in a good while (I think the lack of romaine is causing a great turnover in the other lettuces. And lots of arugula in it. Was good.
@lseeber - Jealous.
Okay, I read it will start to reach stores over this weekend, but with higher prices.
Now - when will meh get the romaine emoji?
@kdemo Higher prices hell! They did it… they should pay.
@kdemo @lseeber I suspect they are having to more aggressively wash it. Or maybe this is hydroponic stuff.
@kdemo @moondrake no telling. Last time it was the washing that did it. Bad water. or water lines, don’t recall.
Every few days I will remember “vegetables”, and have to stand there, shoving baby spinach in my mouth and chewing, like a cow.
@InnocuousFarmer Don’t chow down too much; spinach can kill you or cause considerable harm if you eat too much (many pounds though) all at once.
@duodec I knew it!
@InnocuousFarmer - b-but your name is Farmer!?!
@kdemo What?
Oh.
Yes. Well.
You know, … plants. How they are.
@duodec @InnocuousFarmer explain Popeye then.
@InnocuousFarmer @OnionSoup
Nope, not my gig.
Although I can presume that either the process of canning reduces the level of toxins, or Popeye is just some damn mutant.
My grocery store has a bunch of romaine now.
They didn’t have any of the mixes I liked with carrots and red cabbage though.
So no salad for me cuz I didn’t want to cut up my own stuff and I didn’t want to pay for pre cut shit.
@RiotDemon - I love all the different pre-prepped foods, makes cooking so much easier. I can make so many things with a tub of mirepoix. Also frozen chopped onions and pre-cooked brown rice. I like bagged salad too, but heads (& hearts) of romaine can last longer.
Green leaf lettuce and butter lettuce are so good.
Romaine is okay, but I hate the backbones!!
@LemonTheCat - If we took the bones out it wouldn’t be crunchy, would it?
Not many Monty Python fans here, I take it?
@kdemo I’d rather watch my brother and nephew do Monty Python than watch the actual group. My bro loved it. Me, not so much except for a few things. For me I’d have to watch 2 hrs of drivel to get 3 good lines of comedy that I found funny.
@lseeber - I would recommend Monty Python Live at the Hollywood Bowl, if it interests you at all.
@kdemo hmmm… I dunno. Might take a while to work up the nerve. I’ve seen most of the movies and my bro watched the flying circus every week and I suffered thru most. I tried watching Fawlty Towers about 2 weeks ago… not my cup o’ tea.
Maybe in the old days if I were ripped. But then, the Frank Zappa album covers could keep me in stitches for hours.
I got a salad at Arby’s yesterday. I was soooo happy.
I’m getting by just fine with my usual salad.
If I yearn the crispiness of Romaine… just add more bacon.
@jester747 - Sorry to tell you, but your salad has spoiled.
@jester747
Baby spinach is my salad go-to so this recall isn’t hitting me hard, but I do like romaine on sandwiches. Had a great kale and quinoa salad today.
@becca -
Cold?
Or warm?
@kdemo cold - it was at a Sweetgreen (awesome salad chain) and had lemon-dill fennel, apples, tomatoes, walnuts, and miso vinaigrette. I already want to go back.
spinach is better cooked? how is something that looks and smells like a wet bowl of lawn clippings “better”?
cooked spinach turns my stomach(the smell alone is enough to make me gag), raw spinach makes an awesome salad, is fantastic on sandwiches, it’s just plain better all around…
@earlyre -
@earlyre I used to hate cooked spinach. But I found out I don’t like canned or boiled spinach. I really like it sauteed with onions and garlic tho. Or, palak paneer… middle eastern style.
@earlyre @lseeber Yeah, I’m on a keto diet, so I have been making creamed spinach. Sautee it in butter, stir in cream cheese, parmesan, romano and fresh ground pepper. But a pan full of spinach makes about a half cup of cooked spinach.
@earlyre I’m with you there. Always thought I hated spinach, but I just hate it cooked. and baby spinach is better.
@lseeber sauteed with onions, garlic, bacon, and cream sherry is how my family cooks “greens” all the time. I have the same reaction to those as to traditional cooked spinach.(looks and smells like wet yard clippings)
btw: Palak Paneer, is Indian(SW Asian), not Middle Eastern.
it even sounds Indian as heck…well, Indian or Klingon…one of the two.
@earlyre @moondrake That it do.
@earlyre Yeah… shoulda said Indian.
Ya know what I found at Trader Joes yesterday?
@thismyusername -
Costco’s got romaine.
@moondrake - TJ’s too.
Lettuce celebrate!
I don’t need no stinkin’ lettuce! Mmmmm. Crunchy roll for supper tonight:
@ruouttaurmind -
/giphy nom nom
That’s normal. Carry on.
