Google “Bazooka Joe” - if you grew up in the US and ever bought bubblegum, he was always in the free comic that came with it. They didn’t ever give an explanation for the eyepatch. And sometimes they just had info, like that baseball explanation, which wasn’t meant to be funny. But even the ones that were meant to be were kind of lame. Okay for a gum wrapper, I guess.
(I know from your video that you’re a Brit, so I guess you didn’t have Bazooka Bubblegum!)
Originally from the Motor City, home of Motown, Deeetroit City! But dad moved us down here to Tulsa when I was quite young though.

Before Columbus came to the new world, he had a little known failed expedition. He was able to charter three ships, the Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Columbus figured he would try the Northwest passage first. HOWEVER, he got caught in an Atlantic storm for a month and ended up in what some people like to call “Cornwall”. When he landed he thought he was in the new world and named it Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles in California is actually New Los Angeles.
@cfg83@chienfou@Kyeh@therealjrn yay! I love Cornwall. I do miss living in the uk. I’ve tried to convince him to go back a few times to no avail. I think ideally, I’d love to retire in a little village in Scotland or England. I wouldn’t be opposed to a little farm in New Zealand either.
@cfg83@chienfou@sillyheathen@therealjrn
So here’s where all the confusion came from.
cfg83 posted this video and for some reason (probably sleep deprivation) I jumped to the conclusion that the guy who made the video was cfg83! I was so impressed, too.
@cfg83@chienfou@Kyeh@therealjrn anytime I see a Stanley knife I think of my father in law. In fact we just had our weekly chat after their Sunday tea and he was tellin me how he “had t’sliver uh sommat, think maybe i’twas a metal shavin as I was messin abowt wiya grindah and it w’yent bit wonky and sent bits flyin all about. Had ta get me Stanley knife out n fish it outta thur! Urt like all get owt but sorted it int end.” He’s a proper Yorkshireman is old Graham! Uses the Stanley knife for owt!
@cfg83@Kyeh@sillyheathen@therealjrn
my son has gone to this:
as his daily “pocketknife.”
He flies a good bit and if he forgets to take it out of his pocket prior to TSA he can just toss the blade and keep the knife part…
@chienfou@Kyeh@sillyheathen@therealjrn There you go. Ultra techy-cyber Stanley. I think I have one like that … somewhere, but he’s called Fred or something.
@cfg83@chienfou@Kyeh@therealjrn it really is. I have to remind myself to check my bags before I fly for this very reason. I once had to mail myself a knife that I was not going to throw away come hell or high water. I have a few of these and one is tiny. I’ve never considered traveling with them but this is a brilliant idea!
@sillyheathen my wife and I were having this conversation the other day with the whole dual citizenship thing. I’m not giving up my British or Hungarian (EU) citizenship. If they made me give up my American citizenship, I don’t think I’d go back to UK, I think I’d just move to New Zealand.
NZ is always trying to court IT developers, pay is typically lower,.so Id need to.dowmsize. if the US government made me drop my US citizenship I would be free to move overseas without worrying about paying double taxes like US citizens abroad have to do.
Costa Rica and Portugal were the other two on my list of potential “where to next” countries… But New Zealand has been a goal to live in since I was a teenager. I’ve actually been casually exploring options since January, but I’ve considered NZ several times in my life… I get emails from NZ immigration every once in a while,; I guess I must have signed up for them once.
@OnionSoup I just recently reconnected with a friend I worked with in Yosemite. We haven’t spoken in a while and it turns out he moved to NZ right after we moved into this house. He is married now with three kids and lives in Christchurch after a stretch in Auckland. He was saying we should definitely move there if we need a change of scenery. We have a few friends and family there. Only thing that sucks is the time difference.
@Kyeh I’m not even sure Bazooka has a flavor. And yeah, I think the castle comes with everything?? And about $10m repairs needed. But if I won the lottery…
@sillyheathen I was completely sold when I saw the ‘lab’ in the cellar.
@therealjrn This seems like a very personal statement.
@richseibert Ahhhh, that makes sense. Me thinks this proves Bazooka Joe is a Lefty at the plate.
Orrrrrrrrrrrr, Bazooka Joe is actually a catcher because he has a “bazooka” arm throwing to second on a steal. In that case, BJ could lose his eye in any manner of situations.
Too bad I wasn’t pitching. BJ would never have lost an eye :

Around here, that means lower Alabama!
@cfg83 @chienfou @Kyeh @sillyheathen @therealjrn
I’m curious - how far are you (straight line distance) from your birthplace?
Me: 7200 miles.
@chienfou @Kyeh @macromeh @sillyheathen @therealjrn 22+ miles.
@cfg83 @chienfou @Kyeh @therealjrn no no no. That means the state of Louisiana where I was born and raised!
@cfg83 @chienfou @Kyeh @macromeh @therealjrn it’s 2500 for me.
@chienfou @Kyeh @sillyheathen @therealjrn Yeah, as Kyeh figured out, the Los Angeles I am naming is actually a city at the SouthWest tip of England.
The Los Angeles in California is actually New Los Angeles.
Go figure.

@chienfou @Kyeh @sillyheathen @therealjrn Ha ha, I would never take credit for Explaining Computers. If I did, Stanley the knife would come after me.
/showme anthropomorphized knife named “Stanley” threatening goat named “cfg83”
@cfg83 @chienfou @sillyheathen @therealjrn Shouldn’t he look like this?

@cfg83 @chienfou @sillyheathen @therealjrn Love it!
@chienfou @Kyeh @sillyheathen @therealjrn That is modern streamline Stanley. Mine is Victorian Stanley.

@cfg83 @Kyeh @therealjrn And infinitely more satisfying than the actual gum.
@brainmist @cfg83 @therealjrn
I hate bubblegum.
@cfg83 @chienfou @Kyeh @sillyheathen @therealjrn I’ve got the perfect spot… but you’ll have to let us visit!

@cfg83 @Kyeh @therealjrn I’m not even sure this can be fairly called that. IIRC, it’s a challenge to blow a bubble. It’s basically chewy sugar.
@brainmist @cfg83 @therealjrn I just hate the flavor.
That’s quite the castle! And it comes with all the furnishings? Scary antlers and all?
@brainmist @cfg83 @chienfou @Kyeh @therealjrn oh hell yeah! I’d totally live there.
@brainmist @cfg83 @chienfou @Kyeh @sillyheathen You’re gonna need a bigger badger.
@Kyeh I’m not even sure Bazooka has a flavor.

Crowding the plate. Got hit by inside pitch?
@richseibert Ahhhh, that makes sense. Me thinks this proves Bazooka Joe is a Lefty at the plate.

Affectation?
Very interesting read @phendrick! Thanks!
@phendrick Ok, let’s spin the wheel …

@mediocrebot Ohhhhkay, I was NOT expecting that.
This must(?) be a synonym overlap in the AI image generation.

@mediocrebot looks like my throw missed the bucket.

@sillyheathen The trebuchet is hard to aim.
What’s to get? It’s Freddie Freakin Freeman man-splaining baseball to Bazooka Joe.

Go Braves! (I mean Dodgers
Oh by the way…go Dawgs!!
This post showed up in my Facebook feed so thought I’d share it here.
