So… I don’t know anything about these things.
Do you have to use cloud storage or can you just use the SD card storage?
I want cameras, but I don’t want cloud.
And do you HAVE to have Wifi or not?
Look…I TOLD you that I don’t know anything about these things…
@Tadlem43 No cloud storage is necessary and you can record on MicroSD for local storage. You will need WiFi to set up and interface with the cameras, though.
@AaronLeeJohnson Well I can tell you for sure my cats are not cleaning the house when I am gone. They are working - that would be working to get cat hair all over every surface they claim as theirs, making sure to do it while sleeping on the job.
I want to be very clear that flock, the widespread urban spy network has nothing to do with these. As far as I know. Seem to be standard low res camera’s to check on the pets
However it’s worth knowing how your online “security” cameras may be abused by both “law enforcement” and just data miners depending on the company.
This is not a conspiracy. It’s been happening for years. Numerous cities have voted to remove these. It’s public record. As well as flock lying/normal techbro bullshit
@unksol Gee, not 2 hrs ago I was looking at that location map. And now we have this sale AND your post. What a coincidence, hunh? Or are their some of those cameras minitiarized and already installed throughout my house?
@phendrick lol I knew about the flock cams and associated bullshit. But a few things did surface this weekend.
Been going on for a long time. We need some intelligent people instead of 80 year old politicians being manipulated by oligarchs who are abusing their SEs/programers.
@unksol That top story was here in CO - it’s been on the news a lot! The officer is so damn cocksure and arrogant! It’s pretty scary! She had to gather the info to clear herself and take it to the police, and they haven’t apologized so far.
@unksol That first video is from a YouTube channel of “TheCivilRightsLawyer”. He has other disturbing videos of abuses of fundamental rights by people in authority. I guess these fights will never be over as long as people are the way they are.
I generally support the police. They do a necessary job that I would not want. Doesn’t mean they’re 100% good people. Some have significant flaws. What’s the perfect job for a bully?
How many here saw that 10 seconds of the A&M vs SC game Saturday where the state trooper got out of control? He’s been quickly reprimanded but I haven’t heard the final outcome.
@phendrick that end sounds sports ball related so… I gots nothing.
The aretechnica clip was not where I saw it. But I generally consider them reputable so a good link. I have seen civil rights lawyer clips and I’m not sure I’ve seen one where he’s wrong.
It you watch YouTube have you heard about ground.news? Every channel but idk that they are wrong. Just gets a little annoying…
I’m not against cops but the overuse of force.
PITS . Unreasonable high speed chases for minor traffic violations that result in deaths. That some states glorify. Idk.
@blaineg@phendrick I mean. A non insignificant amount of police have a chip on their shoulder. I don’t disagree that you shouldn’t shoulder check someone.
But that’s what they are “looking into”? Vs straight up assaults/nevermind ICE BS?
Should take a view in the Apple store for the software, there are seven versions of LaView most have bad reviews of both the software and the cameras, including the power supplies failing.
I have gone through many different camera systems and usually the problem is software. Foscam being the worst software, cameras were fine.
Passing based on software reviews.
@craigcush I have a few foscams but they are at least 5 years old. I’m not going to assume their firmware is secure but you have to get into my network first/I control port forwarding.
Software wise I just use tinycampro with them. And mostly I’m checking if a trap killed another mouse. Lol. So. Meh if they were compromised
@chienfou@craigcush@unksol We have a brother-sister pair of cats. They were getting pretty chunky (at 9YO), so we cut back a bit on their food. We have a large country yard, well set back from the road, so we let the cats roam outside during the day. Suddenly, with the reduced rations, the boy transformed into a mighty hunter, catching (and often eating) mice regularly. To the point that I haven’t found a rodent in any of the traps set in the garage and barn since last spring. Finally earning his keep!
rodent problem solved .
We have an access door for the cats that’s programmed to the chips they have. Allows me to control my cats only being able to get in and out of the house. Both of them are active hunters and I will frequently find stray pieces of things either in the house or outside. The other day I was working in the yard and walked down a path only to find the end of a 5-lined skink tail flopping around on the ground. Evidently Bandit had been at work shortly before then!
@chienfou@craigcush@macromeh I haven’t seen a mouse in the actual house in a long time. Kitkat and pals got at them. The mouse/rat traps are in places the cats aren’t allowed.
I’m sure they’d love pissing all over stuff in storage of knocking over tons of chemicals in the garage and killing one/all of us
@chienfou KitKat got shut in a pantry once. Climbed the shelves. Put a claw through a bottle of vegetable oil. And drenched himself. That took hours to get out. And he was way more chill.
I don’t even want to think about these jack asses climbing the garage shelves/knocking over brake clean and sea foam and oil and other volatile things… They need to chill out lol
Ok, I think I figured out the cultural relevance. This is a pitch scene from the heretofore unknown Blade Runner 2039 script. Sandra Bullock was going to play the estranged wife of Deckard. Emma Watson would have played the part of the 6th refurblicant that we never saw in the original film. She was missing from the original film because she had bumped her head and forgot who she was. In this pivotal scene from the pitch deck, Emma’s character is confronted by the other 5 refublicants. You can see in her face that she is just barely starting to remember …
@cfg83 Thank you! My new favorite Sci-fi word is “refurblicants” !
Now I need to run a RPG campaign featuring them.
I’ll call it the, uh, “Edge Jogger” universe?
@blaineg Yes, I am glad you noticed that. That was Sandra’s little known “Julia Roberts” phase where they were hard to tell apart. Hollywood’s gossip network nearly short-circuited when this happened.
/showme Blended image of Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts sitting at outdoor cafe in Beverly Hills with Golden Retriever in chair next to her.
@blaineg@macromeh I think you are taking this too far …

@user13618691 If it’s USB cables, then you could use a power bank from sidedeal (ha!) to keep it powered in locations that don’t have wall outlets. I do this for occasional critter monitoring.
Repost from here
I kept a set of four similar ones in mom’s house (next door) to help with her independence as she got older. This gave me the ability to check on her to make sure she was up in the morning, hadn’t fallen, was headed over for lunch etc etc. They came in super handy more than once.
I didn’t bother to store any of it (neither on local SD or on the cloud). Was more interested in live footage.
Aside from the extremely reasonable objections to all cloud-based cameras detailed above, I personally just have no need for seeing video of my home from work. That said, I’d love to be able to see if the laser cutter is done and/or setting things on fire upstairs without having to walk up there. I don’t even need storage. Anyone have suggestions for a WiFi-based camera that lets me stream the video only over my local network?
@user29674889 They’re 6FT long and I tested a sample of these – they come in retail packaging. The cameras each had protective film over the lenses with no scratches.
@chienfou@Panegyric Tortoises can actually book if they want to - and if they’re warm enough!
A friend of mine has one and she lives outdoors in an closure in the summer. Occasionally she climbs up and over the wire fence & tries to travel around! (Not my friend’s tortoise in this video.)

@troy Ah…ok, thank you!
Do these support ONVIF? Could be recorded with some better software.
@TehMaliron from what I remember of LaView, no.
@TehMaliron I have a Laview doorbell camera on blue iris
@TehMaliron Thanks for that, I hadn’t heard of ONVIF.
@TehMaliron Seems like they do support ONVIF, but it needs to be enabled in the proprietary application:
It’s time to discover the horrible truth of what your pets are up to when you leave the home.
@AaronLeeJohnson I mean they are sometimes peeing in my sandals while I’m less than a foot away on the couch so… I have very very low expectations lol
@AaronLeeJohnson Well I can tell you for sure my cats are not cleaning the house when I am gone. They are working - that would be working to get cat hair all over every surface they claim as theirs, making sure to do it while sleeping on the job.
@AaronLeeJohnson @Kidsandliz
Hair… Hair never changes.
Then again I don’t recall ever seeing a cat in fallout… You can have a completely normal dog. And a roided out gecko… No murder cats?
@AaronLeeJohnson @Kidsandliz @unksol Are you sure you really want to know?
KuoH
@AaronLeeJohnson @Kidsandliz @kuoh I was thinking oatmeal worked on that but I guess it was the secret life of pets TWO
https://theoatmeal.com/blog/secret_life_of_matt
@AaronLeeJohnson I have a camera already and all they do is sleep on the floor by the door while we’re gone.
@AaronLeeJohnson @Fuzzalini uhuh. Check for poster board.

Ring etc are doing this. As are home Depot.lowes. even in non urban areas.

That’s one reason I don’t want cloud storage.
@Tadlem43 completely agree. Id rather host a local server. But also don’t have porch pirates.
Been using tinycampro pre pandemic
The ring camera thing… And also the corporate flock cams. You are not reporting crime and submitting your footage.
They are just using it to track anyone with no warrant.
And cops have been documented using it to stalk people. Including their ex. Never mind the MASSIVE security gaps

@craigcush @unksol
And yet… So many cats. They need to step up!!
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@craigcush
Thankfully I have a metric shit-ton of USB-A wall wart chargers.
@chienfou @craigcush @unksol We have a brother-sister pair of cats. They were getting pretty chunky (at 9YO), so we cut back a bit on their food. Definitely a win-win!

Refurblicants …
/showme LaView F1 Indoor Wi-Fi Security Camera camera says to factory worker “If only you could see what I’ve seen with your optical sensor”.
@mediocrebot I guess I should have used the anthropomorphized card, but it still gets the point across in a collage sort of way. Here’s your star!
Edit: Oh wait, I see the “camera camera” phrase in the sentence. Maybe I confused you. I apologize for that.
@cfg83 @mediocrebot “Refurblicants”, I like that.

Doesn’t say, they use batteries or are they plugged in? And if they use batteries, what size and what’s the battery life?
@user13618691 It does say.
@user13618691 They plug in with included 6FT USB cables and adapters
@user13618691 Under What’s Included, it says 4 USB cables and wall chargers.

@cfg83 Really appreciate the advice I’ll check it out.
@cfg83 Just wanted to hop back and say that I finally watched this and the video was excellent! Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!
Who cares about security? I can use this to play monopoly with my brother in another STATE. …maybe.
How long is the power cord and how are the refurbished products usually from MEH? Thanks.

Well damn! That SOB Aesop lied to me.
@chienfou @Panegyric Well, a healthy rabbit will always outrun a tortoise for sure, but if it takes breaks it probably will lose.

I decided to try these for stalking my cat…
