The speaker dock option might seem like a joke, but I actually do a lot of Spotify through the Echo Dot hooked up to an old JBL Radial dock (I picked it up on Woot a million years ago, and it still sounds pretty good).
Not audiophile quality, but I listen to my AV receiver through my old Yamaha 3-way speakers with two 8-inch woofers each and my best-ever Woot purchase, a Pinnacle sealed subwoofer with two 12-inch drivers mounted front to back.
@steveml That’s the truth. I have all sorts of speaker options that I swear I’ll use, but I’m too lazy to set up every time, so the phone speaker wins.
@chienfou@steveml my sister actually gave me ceramic (I think) thing that looks like a slightly squashed Styrofoam cup and is supposed to amplify the sound without a power source. Still never use it
My high end hearing was severely damaged by antibiotics almost ten years ago and I stopped bothering with fancy sound gear. I have a bunch of decent to good stuff sealed in plastic in the basement, albeit no speakers, but quite frankly it will likely get tossed by my daughters if I don’t deal with it before I drop dead.
At present, most of my music comes from three Amazon Echo Dots, all of which have wired speakers (because Bluetooth is a PITA and even with my hearing a Dot speaker sounds like shit). The living room has the best speakers, a pair of Audysseys I got from woot eons ago. The bedroom and basement have 15-20 year old Dell computer speakers (Black Harman Kardons in the bedroom and ancient boxy beige ones in the basement).
I can use my Signia hearing aids as a bluetooth headset, but doing so kills the batteries pretty quickly so I rarely use them other than for phone calls. I occasionally use a pair of ancient SONY studio over-the-ear headphones, mostly on planes and trains, etc.
@therealjrn lol… My 2004 Ford Taurus has the stock CD-Player with changer in the trunk. The front right speaker was replaced about 15 years ago when it blew out. I don’t spend a lot of time in my car (probably about two hours most weeks) and much of that is spent listening to WNYC (local NPR station, mostly talk radio).
I married into a pair of old school Rogers ls 3/5a speakers, but we use a super basic Sony receiver from the 90s because we haven’t found anything modern that sounds as good. We’ll have to deal with upgrading whenever we get a new tv, but that’s a problem for future Jake to deal with.
i have one of apple’s less successful products, their “ipod hifi” first-party speaker dock. it’s not for audiophiles – it can play music loudly without distortion, but it’s got no highs or lows. it’s great for background music, though.
Work from home. Generally headphones while I’m working. Not audiophile, but not bad (ATH-M50 or Grado SR-60, mostly). Sometimes computer speakers if no one is around (Altec Lansing something with a subwoofer). Music from Plex or Amazon Music. Rest of the family, various Echo devices. I almost never play music on the home theatre, but it’s a fairly entry-level Yamaha paired with Yamaha mini speakers, nothing fancy.
@TheCO2 still have my skull candy headphones from ages ago. comfortable, lightweight, good sound. almost never have occasion to use headphones anymore but i could never throw them out.
@jerk_nugget Mine get used quite frequently, when I’m using my laptop at night. I work 3rd shift, so I’m trying to be quiet when my girlfriend sleeps, on my days off.
@TheCO2 that’s kind of you. my partner works a regular 9 to 5, but stays up later than i do at night (esp on weekends) gaming and he wears headphones for my benefit too (and to increase situational awareness, depending on the game.)
@TheCO2 well, you’re still a little ahead of me then my parents never allowed me to have a video game system so i never picked up the dexterity to learn. i can use the xbox controller to operate netflix and play tetris and that’s about it haha! i do take an interest in watching others game sometimes though.
@jerk_nugget They say it helps hand-eye coordination. But other than that, you’re not missing out. Then there is the group that blames video games for a lot of the violence.
@TheCO2 that group can go pound sand (too violent?) since video games are worldwide and only america has that problem lol. that one always gets me…sigh…
Sitting at the computer: Meh headphones
Working in kitchen or sewing room: Meh speaker docks with old phones.
Shower: Meh bluetooth speaker
Working near computer: PC speakers, I think they were a gift many years ago.
I have, over the years, purchased a couple of Google assistant type speakers.
Best Buy had some Insignia speakers, you could get those pretty cheaply on sale. Then there are the Google minis and the Google home (I got my first Google home right here on Meh, my second with UPS rewards points a couple of months ago).
I have eleven throughout the house (group name: everywhere) and play the Jim Steinke Pandora channel most of the time.
Open backed headphones, or earbuds, mostly, depending. iPhone speaker for podcasts pretty often. Crummy speakers plugged into the TV (still easily better than the TV’s own speakers). If Apple ever let us peasants EQ the bass, I’d probably buy a HomePod.
It is far, far to complicated to try to explain… I have a terrible case of audiophilia. I have it, but my wife is the one who suffers from it…
@shahnm *too
Sonos

@Xeem i still have my bose ipod speaker dock which has held up pretty well! still have the ipod too. from circa 2004.
Ear holes.
@phendrick Is there any other way?
@yakkoTDI Must be, I keep hearing about alternative music.
Soundbar. Sometimes I use the bluetooth feature to stream from my smartphone or tablet.
30-pin speaker dock with my very old iPod that somehow still gets Pandora.
Television or laptop speakers.
Not audiophile quality, but I listen to my AV receiver through my old Yamaha 3-way speakers with two 8-inch woofers each and my best-ever Woot purchase, a Pinnacle sealed subwoofer with two 12-inch drivers mounted front to back.
Phone speaker?
@steveml That’s the truth. I have all sorts of speaker options that I swear I’ll use, but I’m too lazy to set up every time, so the phone speaker wins.
@simplersimon @steveml get really fancy and shove the phone into a plastic solo cup for the real upgrade experience.
@chienfou @steveml my sister actually gave me ceramic (I think) thing that looks like a slightly squashed Styrofoam cup and is supposed to amplify the sound without a power source. Still never use it

@baqui63 …and automobiles?

@baqui63 Ha ha. I was making a little call-out to the movie Planes, Trains & Automobiles
@therealjrn Oh. well, duh. I can be so obtuse at times.
@baqui63 @therealjrn Classic!
I don’t.
Either through my phone on speaker or from my laptop speakers.
HomePod !

I either use cheapish Skull Candy headphones, or a Como Audio radio system. I highly recommend Como Audio for most of your internet radio needs.

@jerk_nugget I have never been much of a gamer. My last system was the Sega Genesis, and it was sports games or the Mario and Sonic types

Power amp (wired or bluetooth), wired thru smaller amp from PC, or smart speaker (Echo). Also, either wired or bluetooth bus with my phone.
Sitting at the computer: Meh headphones
Working in kitchen or sewing room: Meh speaker docks with old phones.
Shower: Meh bluetooth speaker
Working near computer: PC speakers, I think they were a gift many years ago.
airpods
Typically through my Sonos soundbar…not sure what that would best fit voting wise. I guess “another way”
Mostly through Alexa.

Alexa
Bose speaker dock with a bluetooth adapter
Through my computer to a doubled-up Harman Kardon Sound Stix III speaker system.
Earworms. I’m still trying to train them to play what I like instead of repeating the last really annoying song I heard on the radio.
Loudly
Through the speakers on whichever computer I’m using at the time.
alexa. sometimes via our tv/soundbar.
I listen to music at home via either a record player, or through the Youtube app on my TV via Roku.
I wasn’t sure how to include a Sonos system, since it’s kinda bluetooth (but more WiFi) but also a stereo system… so I just chose Stereo System.
Mostly Spotify app on my TV.
From an Echo Dot on my new 80 watt XXL speaker. My neighbors get to listen too.
