We got one of them nespressos for christmas. Yes, I know Nestle is one of the most evil corporations known to humankind but damn if it doesn’t make a decent cup of joe that requires absolutely zero cleanup afterwards and tastes a bit better than anything that came out of a K cup.
@awk@f00l@phendrick@yakkoTDI However, there are “roasts” or often “blends” that are optimized for extraction under pressure which refers to espresso. As opposed to “pour-over” “French press” and other common (also very good) techniques, but the roasts and of course the fine-ness of the grind is different.
I learned from a coffee roaster (in Whitefish MT of all places) that they liked to use a blend of two kinds for their espresso, and I asked to buy some to take with me on my trip (motorhome) and they didn’t have it ready to go they blended it there for me measuring two kinds of beans on a scale and mixing them. A darker and a lighter roast together added to texture and flavor, and also, one bean may be oily whereas the other isn’t, so it balances that out (also better for most grinders to not use all oily-style beans)
Some might assume that an “espresso” bean (yes, technically there is no such thing), would be the darkest strongest one, but in fact, as I mentioned you don’t want super-dark over-roasts, and also, contrary to what most will think, darker roasts actually have less caffeine than the swill people usually chug in 20 oz mugs.
@awk@f00l@phendrick@pmarin@yakkoTDI
My brother was chef at one of the fine resorts in Whitefish (Grouse Mountain). There are several in that region. Moreover, as a native of Western Montana, where we have all of the wintry activities and the sublime natural beauty and attendant outdoorsy things, I can attest with authority that we know fine dining and good coffee. “Whitefish MT of all places”? Harumph, I say.
Also, as it happens, my former journalism advisor (and continuing good friend) and his wife founded Hunter Bay Coffee.
Montanans (I’ll show my bias and suggest, especially those in the west; I’m not even sure what’s going on to the east; might as well be North Dakota) could teach you plenty about coffee. Not for nothing Glenn (the advisor and mentor) knows a lot about music and basketball and photography and words too.
On weekdays usually tea, soda on weekends. I swap between black and green teas. But if I’m running late I’ll grab an energy drink. Right now I have some accelerator brand that are pretty good. I’ll try whatever is on sale.
Sadly, caffeine has little to no effect on me, so i drink coffee or tea whenever I’m in the mood for it, not just early in the day. I guess that’s one silver lining.
(Just at work, I have 5 different coffee makers - single cup drip, coffee pot drip, Keurig, Nespresso, and electric moka pot. What I use depends on my mood for the day.)
Unfortunately I have a caffeine intolerance: causes shortness of breathe, migraine issues and some other stuff. Even 1/2 cup decaf (like 7 mg) causes issues.
Caffeine is sneakily in lots of stuff (ex.: Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies).
I still love the smell of coffee. (I drink chicory to get the “experience.”)
@alx10mgmg sure: I was getting migraine so chased down things I had eaten. On Oatmeal Creme Pie box ingredients, it listed cocoa and chocolate. when I stopped eating them the migraines issue stopped. So even though says those ingredients make up less than 2% each, seems like too many caffeine mg for me. (it is a never ending battle to keep caffeine out of diet, because of sneaky things like this. Oatmeal raisin are my favorite cookie so I got a box of these thinking would be harmless.)
I honestly just don’t do caffeine unless I have to work a super late shift. Coffee is ick. Soda has too much sugar and knocks me out. Damn, I guess I should have voted tea
I like the variety, including, more or less in order of preference:
Chemex pour over (if I have the time and can relax with it, so most weekends, sometimes a work from home)
iced from a Ninja that brews decent hot or cold, but that I use almost exclusively for cold
(Both using these beans, by far my favorite and that I get shipped in from Colorado where the kid and her man are:)
To mix it up I might add varying proportions of cinnamon, clove and/or nutmeg to the grounds (I should get whole and actually put some of that in the grinder)
Guayaki Yerba Mate, usually Enlighten Mint, sometimes Lemon Elation, sometimes something else
Super Coffee that Costco used to carry (Mocha, then Caramel are my favorites of what I’ve been able to try) and that’s now up on SideDeal
One of Celsius that Costco and meh have sometimes sold; so many varieties but not the fitness-focused nonsense, just the caffeine please
sometimes–especially on the road–just Coke or Pepsi, Cherry if I can get it
And especially if you live somewhere with shitty water (and the fridge filter just won’t cut it), I strongly suggest investing in one of these beautiful fuckers (got mine cheap at Costco; works like champ and the ice is perfect; feed it clean water and enjoy):
I usually have a diet soda of some sort. Right now I have diet mtn dew, diet cherry pepsi, and coke zero in rotation. I also really like mtn dew kickstarts, which are an energy drink/soda/fake juice hybrid.
enema
@awk No shit? Does that work well?
@yakkoTDI If you are experiencing a “no-shit” situation, then any enema will turn it into a “yes-shit” situation.
(But don’t put drugs in your rectum, kids.)
@awk
Unless you’re French.
@awk “don’t put drugs in your bum”
unless you’re looking for a good time
I don’t.
@yakkoTDI
/giphy but why
@show_the_maw Because I am pretty much immune to caffeine.
@show_the_maw @yakkoTDI Me too! They say there’s a gene that determines our response to caffeine. Maybe that’s why coke & meth are so popular…?
@ircon96 @show_the_maw @yakkoTDI I hate the taste and the smell of it. Coffee in anything ruins it.
Dr. Pepper, my ride or die.
We got one of them nespressos for christmas. Yes, I know Nestle is one of the most evil corporations known to humankind but damn if it doesn’t make a decent cup of joe that requires absolutely zero cleanup afterwards and tastes a bit better than anything that came out of a K cup.
4C Energy Rush, pretty much the cheapest of the dump-shake-drink mixes.
I chew a few and ground espresso beans if I need caffeine and I’m not really awake yet
@f00l What the hell is an espresso bean? Did you mean coffee bean?
@yakkoTDI
Espresso roast
@f00l @yakkoTDI Don’t we all have the right to expresso ourselves the way we see fit?
@f00l @phendrick @yakkoTDI It’s our inalienable right as human beans!
@awk @phendrick @yakkoTDI
I’m sure it’s in the declaration and the bill of rights. And the Pledge of Allegiance.
@awk @f00l @phendrick Espresso is a process for brewing for coffee. It is not a type of bean nor a type of roasting.

Thanks, for the Super-Accuracy.
My public words can often/always use some correction
Around here, “Espresso beans” is colloquially understood to refer to beans selected and roasted for espresso.
No doubt I was being too informal.
Re my original post:
That was dictated while at s stoplight.
Poor Siri hates interpreting me, i ‘spoze.
Was supposed to mention “unground espresso beans”.
(Which terminology is also either incorrect, informal, both, or just plain gauche. See Wikipedia link above.)
; )
@awk @f00l @phendrick @yakkoTDI
Yikes, drive carefully!
@awk @f00l @Kyeh @phendrick @yakkoTDI At least she was at a stop sign and not in the espresso lane on the highway.

@awk @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @phendrick @yakkoTDI
I am the very slow brain riding in the super speed demon lane
@awk @f00l @Kidsandliz @phendrick @yakkoTDI That doesn’t sound good …
@awk @f00l @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @yakkoTDI
Those people make it home safely. It’s the people trying to get around them that die trying.
@awk @Kidsandliz @Kyeh @phendrick @yakkoTDI
I said I had a slow brain
I didn’t say that was a speed or philosophy model for my driving
/giphy faster
@awk @f00l @Kidsandliz @phendrick @yakkoTDI
Bur driving fast and thinking slow doesn’t sound good either.
A can of Nitro Pepsi every work morning. Doesn’t churn my stomach the way coffee does, and tastes delicious!
@PooltoyWolf that glass is so… strange!
@catthegreat I think it was designed to maximize turbulence during the pour. I guess it seems to work! Guinness makes a glass with similar ‘physics’.
K-cup me, so I can move any direction I want.

Caffeination? I don’t need no stinking caffeination!
And if I did, it wouldn’t be coffee.
Sadly, caffeine has little to no effect on me, so i drink coffee or tea whenever I’m in the mood for it, not just early in the day. I guess that’s one silver lining.
Until recently the effect caffeine had on me was to give me a headache it I didn’t have it in my bloodstream.
But I’ve cut way back. I’ll have a couple of Diet Mountain Dews as I’m driving around between jobs.
Some days I feel like this:

(Just at work, I have 5 different coffee makers - single cup drip, coffee pot drip, Keurig, Nespresso, and electric moka pot. What I use depends on my mood for the day.)
Well I get some H2O without the rocks! Straight from the tap.
Shot of espresso coffee.
Yes
I checked “Soda”, but we call it “Pop” here. Diet Coke.
@romellex In East Texas, it’s called “coke”.
Unfortunately I have a caffeine intolerance: causes shortness of breathe, migraine issues and some other stuff. Even 1/2 cup decaf (like 7 mg) causes issues.

I covered this back when I was goating. It’s pretty easy to do. My process is outlined here: https://meh.com/forum/topics/thanksgoating-day-twenty-java-josh
Nope.
Adam’s ale for me, on the rocks.
I honestly just don’t do caffeine unless I have to work a super late shift. Coffee is ick. Soda has too much sugar and knocks me out. Damn, I guess I should have voted tea
Oh no Joy has COVID again! Thank god she was up to date on all the boosters! Could have been so much worse!

Coffee. Roasted at home, brewed at home or at work.
It varies. More recently I used charged lemonade from Panera, but I switched to house coffee from our new espresso maker!
I don’t. I usually drink a juice or a body armor no sugar option.
