How are your projects going?
16I just put up a closet door. This door and hardware have been sitting here since August or September 2024.

Only Took me like 90 minutes. On Sunday. Could have done it anywhere in that year but. Ya know sometimes. You don’t want to do anything…
But now the walk in closet is cleaned. And now the laundry can be moved to a cat hair freeish zone. Even though it’s impossible to get some out.
So the shelves can go in the laundry. For a pantry
Which moves things out from the front of the garage.
So I can get under the metro when the 5 inches of snow melts if I get the block back this week… I mean I can get at it anyway.
Who else stacks things like this? I get into an efficiency loop. Both time and cost. And sometimes a little depressed/unmotivated and lock up. Not that… Other things have been helping.

Congratulations, it looks really good! And yay that it paves the way for the other stuff. That sequence sounds extremely familiar to me.
Nice. Good job. Progress counts in my book.
I go in cycles both good and bad. Currently at a low. I do best with extensive lists. I can organize and focus better. Nice to have the visual crossing stuff off when done.
@speediedelivery my problem is one block with one thing in the list can become a reason not to execute the whole list.
Can also get a little depressed/overwhelmed.
I finally got most of the spackling done but put off sanding it and now it’s too cold to paint as I’d want to open the windows to air the place out. Of course that means it’s time to disassemble the dryer again - I didn’t get it right after replacing the drum belt - since it’s now a little cool to dry washing outside. And although I can’t paint it I should at least brace and rehang the bad shutter. When the wind dies down it’ll be time to charge up my Meh pole saw and start trimming the surviving branches. But no rush - most of this stuff has been hanging fire all year!
@aetris lol my pole saw is leaning by the garage door. I bought it this year. Oiled it up. A few weeks snuck by. Now so much snow the neighbors tree over the drive is hitting the car again. Supposed to be in the high 50s this weekend. Might have to go psycho on that tree real quick.
Did the whole dryer belt dance a few years ago. Fun times
@aetris and… Two large points of the top of the neighbors tree snapped off in the last windstorm. They are hung up in vines/branches lower parts of that tree and the one next to it which could smash my new roof/main bedroom.
May get interesting. Especially since sunset is 530 Eastern and I’m on a central time account. Oh well
@aetris @unksol Nooooo!!!
@unksol We had EXTREMELY high winds yesterday that picked up the recycling bin - the only one that had anything in it - and blew it up and down the driveway, scattering the contents all over my and the neighbors property. The two high dead limbs that are beyond my reach to cut, however, survived completely unscathed! But I guess it could’a been worse… Sometimes ya just gotta sigh and call the tree surgeon…

Ha! I just did the same thing in the office of the new shop! I still have some work to do on the paint and need to get new bolts because the ones they sent are strangely too large and scrape the wall.
I’m putting up crown and hanging the oak door tomorrow. I’ll start laying floor if I have enough time but who knows.
@sillyheathen Curious: Is that green wall curved or is that some sort of optical illusion or camera effect? And to be further nosy, what are the tracks on the ceiling for?
Anyway, Congrats. It appears to be well on its way to impressiveness. Not to mention the great views.
@sillyheathen nice. much more ambitious than mine lol. I’m not even going to bother putting up the trim/painting/staining. I’m happy with “i can get in/cats can stay out” lol. Baby steps
@phendrick it’s a panoramic photo.
@phendrick @sillyheathen
And it looks like the tracks are the bottom of metal trusses. Amirite?
BTW… Your workshop is WAY fancier than mine!
@chienfou @phendrick

Got the crown up and I’m going to hang the door, add that trim and touch up paint after dinner. And to be fair, the woodshop will be utilitarian for the most part. My studio will also be fun but less fancy than the office side for sure. I really wanted the office to be a little fancy and definitely show some of my artsy fartsy. I still have paint details to add to the green wall. I’m also making some 1x1 slats in the corner to create modular shelves and there will be a small live edge coffee bar with sculpted slab stools. The light fixtures have been a bigger because the ones I really wanted are just too expensive. They’ve typically been actual vintage MCM so im either going to make the light fixtures or cross my fingers that I find ones I like that don’t break the bank.
@chienfou @phendrick @sillyheathen My attempts at decorating always seem to wind up more toward the fartsy and less to the artsy.
@chienfou @macromeh @phendrick ![enter image description here][1]
And then there was floor!
[1]:
@chienfou @macromeh @phendrick @sillyheathen you’re making the rest of us look bad lol
@chienfou @macromeh @phendrick @unksol well if I don’t get this done, I’m either going to be murdered or divorced by the Englishman. So I’m getting it done.

@chienfou @macromeh @sillyheathe
I’m tired just considering what you’ve done last few days!
Looking nice and very professional.
Your tax/assessor should be drooling over your increased evaluation.
Or was s/he not invited to the viewing?
@chienfou @macromeh @phendrick they are not invited.
The building is permitted and they have signed off. They don’t need to know anything else about it. I’m finishing the floor in the morning. I didn’t have it in me to finish ripping the final pieces at 920 at night. But if I can’t sleep, I’ll probably just go out and finish. Tomorrow it’s touch up painting, put artsy fartsy MCM inspired mural type thing on the wall, base board and shoe molding. I’d love to think I’ll have time to put the trim around the windows but I try to be more realistic and sans time blindness.
@chienfou @macromeh @phendrick @sillyheathen I’m not sure I should be starring the installation of flooring under the threat of murder? “The Englishman” hmmm what’s he up to…
@chienfou @macromeh @phendrick @unksol eating bonbons and watching Coronation Street. I lied he’s actually watching QI. We both worked in there today. It was awesome to have help. Methinks I need sleep.
My executive function is obliterated.
@sillyheathen
Very nice. Were those real wood planks you stained yourself?
@chienfou negative. We’re just using engineered flooring. We got a screaming deal on it and it’s so much easier to install.
@sillyheathen
Absolutely agree. Looking at the pieces in the box it looks like there is a grain pattern on the bottom of them. Are they reversible?? That would be cool.
@chienfou sadly because of the orientation of the TnG, you’d have to lay it all upside down. The lamination is on actual wood instead of mdf or another alternative material which is nice. I tested the scratch resistance last night and it’s pretty tough. I had to apply quite a bit of pressure with a screw to get it to actually scratch. Even then I could lightly sand and poly and it looks like new. I think I paid .35/per sfqft so it was a no brainer. And it was a darker color which I wanted to contrast against that juniper wall.
@chienfou @unksol

You’ll be happy to know I didn’t do much today.
I tweaked my back being daft with too many boxes of flooring in a wheelbarrow last night. So annoying. Anyway. I did wire up a pendant light I picked up at world market along with my hobnobs and jammy dodgers. Laid out the coving and baseboards and put shoe molding on the juniper sections.
@chienfou @sillyheathen @unksol
That’s so beautiful. I’m envious - it’s much nicer than my house!
Your idea of “didn’t do much today” is a whole lot different from mine.
@chienfou @Kyeh @unksol hey mine too!

I finally did some laundry
@heartny I think I washed most of the fabric things. At least over 50%. Cause cat hair/stuff sitting in/falling out of laundry baskets. Not saying it’s put away. But it’s clean and cat safe lol.
Can you tell what day the dryer was running. All day?

@heartny HA! that’s kind of my take on this impressive lists from everyone. of course, i have yet to fold it…
@heartny
I managed to accomplish sneezing.
/giphy proud

@unksol Amateur! The bi-fold doors for the closets in my kids’ bedrooms have been sitting in my barn since just before the turn of the century. (No, really!)
I recently cleaned out/organized my barn and uncovered the doors, still in their shipping boxes. So maybe I’ll actually get them installed in the coming months.
But then again, the kids have long since grown and left home, so no need to rush…
@macromeh Just make sure they are installed by the time the kids move back.
@macromeh
Honestly. Who wants to work when the alt pleasure is doomscrolling?
@macromeh my house had bi-fold closet doors and I hated them. I found a tutorial to convert them to french doors. So much better and pretty easy to do.
@ironcheftoni @macromeh so I had bifold closest doors when I was a kid. And when my dad died there were bifold doors found in the basement which resonated with the doors in the barn. But we already had doors and no kids had lived there for decades… So were the metal bifold doors supposed to be upgraded few decades ago??
Regardless I also need to put up some closet doors because horrible cats… Was thinking bifold. I can’t imagine French doors for a closet? Maybe you can convince me but that takes a much larger footprint?
The cold frame I threw together protected the plumeria from freezing during the last two nights when the temps dropped down to 24. Unfortunately the polycarbonate panels did not arrive when they were supposed to, spending 4 days languishing in Atlanta for some reason, so I ended up having to cover it with plastic sheeting. I will deconstruct it and add the polycarb panels in the next couple of days when they arrive so that I’ll have a better structure for my next cold snap.
Ended up having to cut back all the plants in the veggie garden. This was really distressing since the next two weeks look like they’ll be above freezing and I could have gotten a bunch more from the peppers and eggplant and tomato plants. Also had to bring in the basil so it wouldn’t wilt totally.
If we end up getting a couple of rainy days maybe I can actually clean out my office so I can get in there and do something productive. …Nah…who am I kidding?
I’m a little over 23 weeks into a 40 week body building project. It’s going well. Although the body has learned to kick me back
I’m moving in the nesting phase and am trying to hold off putting up baby stuff until after Christmas but my urge to prepare is very strong!
@mbersiam I am well overdo to start my body building project, but of a quite different kind. Maybe another New Year’s resolution will help. (The last few have not…)
May yours continue successfully at a nice leisurely pace – don’t rush it.
@mbersiam @phendrick
Is that why parts are missing from the trunk?
@mbersiam @yakkoTDI You also are talking about a different type of body building from what I had in mind.
I’m not sure whether etiquette requires me to wish you a full trunk or not.
@mbersiam @phendrick
@yakkoTDI – Only if you’re building one of these:
@Kyeh @mbersiam @yakkoTDI Nah, that is pretty much a seasonal item and since this Halloween is over, and I don’t have either a big enough refrigerator or unused trunk.
Maybe next year.
@phendrick @yakkoTDI Yeah, I like @mbersiam’s project much better!
@mbersiam at least you won’t be body building in the summer. Granted I guess you started it back then.
I didn’t mind being pregnant in the cold. #3 was mid June and it made me thankful I didn’t have to carry through July or Aug.
@sillyheathen this is my third winter baby and i have one summer baby. I really don’t like that I have to travel almost an hour to my midwife clinic on a weekly basis in the dead of winter when due date gets closer. But as far as comfort goes it won’t be so bad for sure.
@mbersiam @sillyheathen that’s a lot of body building. Good luck
@mbersiam @sillyheathen
Both our kids were born in July. My wife’s favorite thing to do with her summer pregnancies was to go to the beach because she could wallow out a spot and lay on her stomach!
@unksol Thanks!
@chienfou If I liked the beach and had one anywhere near me that may sound good to me
My summer baby was born during a major midwest heatwave. I remember the nurses telling me I was good to go home the next day, but insurance covered be until the following day. I opted to say in hospital the extra day and have my food delivered to me in an air conditioned room.
looks like your thumb is still intact as well
@catthegreat lol har har. :p I did notice after it was up but didn’t care enough. And I think that’s actually a finger overhang just because of how I hold my phone. No hammers involved just a rubber mallet. Only had to drill 15 holes. Should have been 13 but my stud sensor was a little off or something and had to shift it a little.
But yes all my digits are undamaged
Been working out the storyboards for a little animation project me and my friends are doing.
I keep adding to my projects pile and helping other people with theirs.
Procrastinator that I am waited to the last moment to do this. At some point in the next couple of years when it is complete, we are moving into a senior living facility. Won’t bore you with the details unless interested, but seemed like the prudent thing to do rather than being forced into moving when our health forced us to do so.
Anyway downsizing to a space which is 50% smaller than what we have now is going to be a challenge. As such the company building where we were going to move had a shredding truck this morning available for people to get rid of sensitive papers. Over 10 bankers boxes later of old client files and files over 20 years old, but to go through all those files to determine which ones to get rid of in the last 3 days was not fun. And that was only less than 50% of the files I still have.
@Felton10 We recently cleaned out many boxes of old paper documents. Many (from the 80’s and early 90’s) while otherwise innocuous had social security numbers printed on them (god knows why - it didn’t seem necessary), so a big pile of them had to be shredded. Big PITA!
@Felton10
Will The Exalted Pet being moving with you?
@f00l Of course-there is a bay window in the great room with large windows on 3 sides that we picked out (in lieu of a balcony) specifically for her. She will miss the view she now has of the golfers teeing off on the 12th hole as our new unit will be on the 5th floor as all she will see then is a vacant lot and hopefully some birds flying by.
@Felton10 dad did all our taxes when we were kids on paper and carbon copies. I still have some. But he also did my aunt’s/grandma’s. Family friends. IDK what all was in there. There were lots of boxes when he died. Mom shredded a bunch but the last few boxes I just ended up burning cause they didn’t get to them
Granted just family vs clients
I have too many hobbies. And projects. And friends with hobbies and projects.
Right now I just noticed I need to refit an attic window, but don’t have a ladder to take apart the outside sill. Have to plastic wrap the frame so winds don’t seep in.
One step forward, three steps back. Can’t seem to upload photos (maybe work blocking that now). Assembled a shed this summer to try to have garden stuff out of the shop. After a nasty windstorm (while i was out of town) i now have garden stuff hastily stuffed back in shop – plus a bunch of twisted sheetmetal in the field to deal with.
/showme a corrugated metal shed destroyed by a mini tornado in a crumpled pile out in a grassy field
Moved in June. Still have many boxes to unpack. Idk if they’ll ever really get unpacked, because we still have my inlaws basement full of stuff we stored there 6 years ago from a move. It doesn’t help that I hate my in laws so it’s my life’s mission to avoid that house at all costs
@roachy I determined in my last move I had a set of boxes I hadn’t opened since 1997. I’d long-since bought anything I might have needed since then but last spring I finally tackled them and found some nice family photos and mementos.
And about 6 boxes of donations. My most surprising discoveries was some bowling trophies from back in the day. I literally have no memories of them. I must have jumped a time loop or something at some point.
@therealjrn that’s the only thing stopping me from chucking all of it. I need to make sure nothing sentimental. After that, it’s throw out or donate because I obviously don’t need any of it. I’m turning a leaf on my packrat ways
@roachy @therealjrn I took most of the sentimental things I “knew” of when I went to college. And on and on. But I also hauled around tubs with broken RC cars cause I might be able to fix/rewire stuff. Lol starting to build a box of ewaste etc. Definitely have been a packrat.
Some things my mom gave me when my dad passed/she moved. Cleaned out stuff. Some cross stitches from my aunt/grandma that were over my bed I forgot about. Some fabric books from when I was like 2-3. Not sure if they made them. We all had a metal “fancy” Christmas ornament with our names.
Some other little things. Strangest being babies first year calendar. Which I guess is… Interesting to have?
![enter image description here][1]
Apparently I slept well? Was happy all the time?
![enter image description here][2]
Not things to accidentally throw out.

[2]:
@roachy @therealjrn and yes I’m only like 40. A lot of you have years and families on me. So could go both ways. Things that are sentimental between us and our parents. Things that are sentimental between you and your kids. Or just friends. Honestly I expected to have kids by now and them meet their grandad and great grandparents but that ships mostly sailed.
@roachy @therealjrn @unksol
That’s sweet! “Very good baby.”
@Kyeh @roachy @therealjrn ehh… That’s just a weird calendar to read. Especially for a year you will never remember that’s filtered through your mother’s lense who now has a 4 year old, a 2 year old and a 6 month old
Still probably not something you would want to accidentally shred was all I meant
@roachy @therealjrn @unksol I think it’s fun. My mother could draw pretty well, and there’s a pencil drawing she did of me as an infant that’s really nice. I should get it and frame it, although I guess she still likes to look through that art pad once in a while.
@Kyeh @roachy @therealjrn lol I think the calendar is a little weird because if you’re keeping it your doing it to either show to people or for your kid. I’ve never seen it before, but either way you’re not going to put “omg he wouldn’t stop crying today, I’m so tired why won’t they stop” entries lol.
And even if I just didn’t cry for some reason…There’s absolutely no way she wasn’t just fucking exhausted with two toddlers and a baby
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@Kyeh @roachy @unksol I think the calandar is nice. She took time to mark milestones.
@Kyeh @roachy @therealjrn @unksol
I am also solidly in the “that’s actually pretty cool” camp. And don’t wave bye-bye to that ship totally, yet. There are countless men who have had kids well into their sixties. That ship could easily return for another landing at the dock… It’ll be up to you to meet it.
@chienfou @Kyeh @roachy @therealjrn ya but see. The whole cats will cover you in hair and piss on anything you put down aspect…
Admittedly I haven’t been on a date since the pandemic. I could try and get things better. Hence the closest door. But the mother fucking cats…
@unksol
Often times quite literaly…
@chienfou ugh. Yes technically. Lol
It only took me a year-and-a-half to install some wire shelves in my laundry room. I bought them from a Woot-off or something and tucked them away. Out of sight, out of mind.
That’s awesome! Great job!
MEALS! DEALS! EELS! AWESOME!
