@mehcuda67 I actually met him in 1986 when I was a DJ at a radio station where he stopped in to do a promo for his appearance in my town. Got his autograph too!!
@IndifferentDude
Ah yes, good memories of my 3 year old self…
Sunday mornings with the whole family listening to MY favorite (next to The Chipmunks of course) guy at the time, Tiny Tim!
With the vinyl playing on the oversized hi-fi, dancing around the house, laughing and singing in a high pitched voice mimicking the vocals of that minutes favorite song, Tip Toe Through The Tulips! Fun times!
@fawkeshawk I was thinking the same…I have been thinking of getting a ukulele for my daughter, just as a quirky/fun gift - and this particular brand came up often in the (limited) research I did. AND her favorite color is purple. Meant to be or just creepy? Not sure, but I got one.
@xarophti They (Overdriver Duo) are insanely talented musicians… some of the things they do, playing several stringed instruments simultaneously, border on the impossible.
Oh cool. Meh is selling miniature singing people, although they should probably selling 18" ones because of all the clothes available for 18" dolls that would fit them.
@Catburd But that’s one quick way to get famous; do what nobody else has done. Otherwise, you’d better have not just the talent, but something else to set yourself apart from the rest of the me-too-bers.
As a Guy With Three Ukuleles (soprano, baritone, and banjolele), let me point out that the picks and strap are pointless accessories. You don’t use a pick to play the uke, and you absolutely don’t need a strap.
This is a very common kind of cheap ukulele; they don’t sound great, they don’t stay in tune, and they’re not particularly durable.
But if you just want to see if you enjoy playing the uke, $30 is a risk-free cost. Just know if you really like playing, you’ll end up having to updrade later. You can get a decent starter Lanakai for under $100.
But then you’ll be a Person With Two Ukuleles. Do you really want to see where this path leads?
@brantsdad as someone with 5 (1 soprano, 2 concert and 2 tenor) or 6 (if I include our crappy guitalele) ukes, you speak the truth! They are addictive little instruments! Can’t have just one! I want a baritone one next!
Mrs. News, an avocational touring musician (she plays the late Christine McVie in a Fleetwood Mac tribute band), says this appears to be quite a good deal. Too bad they don’t have the 24" in natural color…
this video is what got me into Ukulele years ago. I purchased a tenor Kala from the legendary Music Guy Mic and he set it up for me before sending it from Hawaii.
I haven’t picked up my ukuleles in a few years, time to get back in. Thanks for the reminder, Meh.
@irenegade I LOVE Jake Shimabukuro - he’s so brilliant! I saw him in concert a few years ago in a small venue - I was in the 2nd row on the side - and he was funny and friendly and amazing. It certainly gave me a whole new understanding of how cool the ukelele can be.
@irenegade wow! When I was researching to buy my first Uke (about 12 or 13 years ago), I saw him mentioned over and over again on the Ukulele Underground forums. I really wanted to get one from him, but I was afraid to make that investment without knowing whether my kids were going to continue with playing. I regretted it.
@kyeh That is so cool that you saw him in concert!
Ukes are so fun! And very addictive if you enjoy playing. We have 5 and my kids love them!
Pretty easy to learn, too, (not that I’ve really had much time to learn to play…but the basic cords are easy).
Here’s my kiddo playing a concert sized Uke when she was 9 for her school talent show. It started her on her path to guitar, but she still loves her Ukuleles!
Heads up: if you’re gifting one of these to someone in your house for your winter gift-centric holiday of choice: it arrives in a uke-shaped box with Hola! Ukuleles printed on the front, so pay attention to your expected delivery time if you need to keep that a secret.
I did retain the element of surprise (close call, though!) and an excited for it to be here! After bedtime I’ll crack the box and check it out.
I got mine yesterday and took it out to tune it up. The frets are a little rough on the edges, so be sure to check those out on yours before giving it to a little one. Some of them could be sharp enough to hurt or cut your finger as you slide up and down the neck. They can be easily filed smooth though, as long as you’re careful not to mess up the wood.
Upon playing it, it buzzes a little. The 4th string (G) is touching the second or third fret which is making the first fret note and the third fret note sound the same…I guess because it’s a little high? The 3rd string buzzes a bit because it touches the same fret, but not enough to mess up the notes. I think I can try pushing the fret in the slot more if I take the strings off (or maybe even slide the fret out to see if I can deepen the slot with a file. I obviously would not try this on a more expensive Uke, but I don’t mind seeing if I can fix this one.
Other than those 2 issues, it’s cute. And sounds ok. The finish on the wood seems fine. The strings are nice (they’re still settling in). I know enough (I think) to address the rough metal of the fret ends with a file, and to fiddle with the fret that’s too high, but I wouldn’t expect someone who doesn’t know a thing about ukes or guitars to understand how to fix these. And I could totally screw it up messing with adjusting the fret height…but hopefully YouTube can help with that. I like it enough to keep it.
I think if you get one with no issues, it’s a nice little starter Uke. But look it over well if you’re giving it as a gift. It’s probably worth $30, but definitely not $80.
@k4evryng I unpacked the soprano I got last night and gave it a first tune to try to get the strings settled before Christmas. I didn’t notice any buzzing but will be sure to check all the frets over for sharp edges when I get it out again in a day or two.
I figure if I fiddle with it a few times between now and Christmas it should stay decently in tune by then.

@IndifferentDude You’ve discovered the Tim-roll! Rick Astley can’t even touch this

Cool!
Now you too can make annoying royalty-free ukulele music for how-to videos.
Is this a knife, or a speaker dock?
@EvilSmoo I know you could put a trackr in it!
@EvilSmoo It could become one:

No matter how good you feel about your skills, you will never be Israel Kamakawiwoʻole good on the yuke.
@adamwesv He was amazing…
Lol, it’s deja vu all over again
You too can sit in on this group:
who-wah-wah
@phendrick They’re brilliant! Thanks for sending me down a four-stringed rabbit hole.
no joke have a ukulele class this year and my favorite color is purple so in other words, stop stalking me meh
@fawkeshawk I was thinking the same…I have been thinking of getting a ukulele for my daughter, just as a quirky/fun gift - and this particular brand came up often in the (limited) research I did. AND her favorite color is purple. Meant to be or just creepy? Not sure, but I got one.
@fawkeshawk @kathyl Serendipitous!
Would this be a good gift for my hipster friend in Brooklyn?
@Rowsdower Sure why not! Especially if he/she is musicly inclined!
@Lynnerizer @Rowsdower if THEY are musically inclined. They are from Brooklyn after all.
They left a couple of strings off these guitars. Is that why they’re on meh?
@mehcuda67 Yes it lowers the disappointment when you buy it knowing it’s broken!
I wish they had the 24" in natural wood.
I wonder how long I’d have to practice to do this:
@baqui63 At least 1/2 hour.
@baqui63 Wow. I’m speechless. Bought a soprano on a whim earlier this year. Don’t think I’ll ever get that good
@xarophti They (Overdriver Duo) are insanely talented musicians… some of the things they do, playing several stringed instruments simultaneously, border on the impossible.
@baqui63 wow. Just incredible!
I wish I could play any instrument that well!
I feel like I’m going to uke.
Oh cool. Meh is selling miniature singing people, although they should probably selling 18" ones because of all the clothes available for 18" dolls that would fit them.
@Kidsandliz Or maybe they’re miniature gangsters. They’ll break your kneecaps.
Needs banana for scale.
They’ll be selling the glockenspiel tomorrow so you can buy both and then clap/whistle/stomp your way into television commercial wealth.
@Catburd Not without an accordion.
@werehatrack I gotta be honest. I’ve never heard an accordion in those whistle-clap-stomp-ukelele-glockenspiel tracks.
@Catburd But that’s one quick way to get famous; do what nobody else has done. Otherwise, you’d better have not just the talent, but something else to set yourself apart from the rest of the me-too-bers.
@werehatrack But isn’t that the point of that awful commercial jingle music? To make something sound safe, innocuous, familiar, and low-risk?
@Catburd @werehatrack I think the main objective of that “music” is for it to stick in your head and drive you nuts!
Does it come with rigging?

A Guy With Four Ukuleles
@brantsdad which banjolele do you have? I’ve had my eye out.
Signed, a guy with three ukes that he paid for (soprano, tenor, and bass) and two banjos he didn’t.
@gimpeyjoe It’s a Lanakai. I like it; it’s got a good twang and the setup was easier than I thought.
@brantsdad Do the 21" Soprano and the 24" Concert model sound different? I see the Concert has more frets. (I know nothing about ukeleles.)
@brantsdad as someone with 5 (1 soprano, 2 concert and 2 tenor) or 6 (if I include our crappy guitalele) ukes, you speak the truth! They are addictive little instruments! Can’t have just one! I want a baritone one next!

@Kyeh very cool! I’ve only seen videos. He does some great collaborations!
