@PooltoyWolf@sammydog01- How exactly would ya know it wouldn’t be worth it if you haven’t used them & do you even drink ice cold coffee¿? Just curious!!
You fake valor dudes give legit guys a bad name…just say you are a southerner, or an orange-chin…no need to bring actual service into it, because you shopping has zero to do with it.
But…how are you complaining about how somebody else uses their time? You seem to have endless money and time…buy this and send it to the other guy if you find it absurd that somebody wouldn’t give away something they bought, after spending more time and money on it.
@sammydog01 Many years ago I started taking my coffee black, which does definitely have the side effect of turning someone into an awful coffee snob. My mom has a keurig, and whenever I visit her I bring my own coffee, mini grinder, and coffee maker.
@mediocrebot When I see “Dorothy” I can’t help but think of this in relation to the Wizard of Oz. Was the wizard actually a Cray computer that had been used to perfect time travel?
meh is matching the price I paid for two of these at Ollie’s. They actually work pretty well if you are willing to let them run a while. I like strong brews so they sit on the coffee bar whirring along for a few hours. But that’s still faster than the Primula (a meh purchase) or the Victor & Victoria (side deal) contraption. But nothing beats TJ’s French Roast cold brew concentrate for convenience. It just goes so fast when you don’t dilute it….
@Frcal I still have my Primula, that worked really well. I should also find and box up my Victor and Victoria ones, I used them for tea for a while but it’s really not that hard to set a 5 minute timer.
Anyone who’s ever spent time in a lab recognizes this is just a magnetic stirrer. It’s a useful device with a lot of potential uses (mostly stirring-related)… but I don’t think it’s very useful for cold brew coffee. If you look at it from this perspective, you may find a use for this. Now—onto my Ted Talk (don’t worry there’s a TL;DR at the end)!
I got these when Meh sold them like a year ago or something. I used one a few times and can confirm they do what it says on the tin—but it also convinced me you can’t really shortcut the process of cold brewing coffee (timewise) and still get anything close to the same result. They also don’t make very much actual coffee, so if you drink a lot of cold brew (or you have other humans in your life—BOOOO) this thing starts to feel like a 22oz Brita that takes 15 minutes to produce an extremely mediocre cup of cold brew.
Assuming you care about flavor, cold brew will demand higher-grade coffee & it will use a shitload more of it compared to hot brewing (~3x the amount depending on the strength), so if you’re looking at this as a cost-saving measure, look elsewhere. Of course, it might stop you from buying Starbucks long enough to pay for itself (which wouldn’t take long even factoring in the $20/lb coffee it takes to produce acceptable coffee), but let’s be honest: you’ll probably stop using it & return to your wicked ways.
In my opinion, if you’re addicted to Starbucks & want to break the cycle, you’re probably better off just buying cold brew concentrate as a compromise. If you don’t give a shit about flavor and coffee is merely a caffeine-delivery mechanism for you, this could be useful… but you’ll still be spending more time making/cleaning this unit in addition to spending more money on coffee.
TL;DR
It probably isn’t worth the storage space. Save yourself some time & find an acceptable cold brew concentrate instead—you’ll still save money over Starbucks… or just drink alcohol for breakfast like the rest of us.
@dvermilion I hadn’t considered that, but $10 for a couple magnetic stirrers is a pretty good deal. Probably could use these for making your own Coca Cola concentrate:
@ciabelle@dvermilion I bought mine exactly because of lab nostalgia. Since then I bought a hot chocolate maker that’s a stirring hot plate and is even more fun.
This is the cheapest you’ll find it and maybe worth it for the carafes at this price?
I think it’ll make a nice enough brew in about 20 min but the cleanup is annoying. Similar to a French press. I actually prefer it for ice tea but always forget to use it.
@highonpez@user85442241 I use the vortex with tea bags; I just have to make sure the bags are anchored (either to the clip under the lid or pinned to the sides of the glass.
@djslack@Kyeh They’re not Pyrex, that’s for sure. It’s just normal glass, like any you’d drink from. Not especially fragile but not especially strong, either.
@djslack@Kyeh you don’t actually need the glass carafes (a plastic takeout container holds the magnetic cup just as well) if you’re not dealing with anything hot.
(Heck, we probably don’t need the cups either, just a long metal rod.)

I was excited to buy one of these, during a previous deal. I rushed to open it when I got it, washed it all up, and made my first batch of coffee following the directions.
It wasn’t good, even after filtering it twice. So I washed everything up and did it again, following advice to do it longer that listed in the directions. Same result.
I washed it all up again, packed it up in the box, and put it in the donation stack so it can disappoint someone else.
You almost had me. At that price, they’re disposable. But, in the end, do I ever need it fast? No, I’m still okay making an extra pot and sticking it in the fridge for tomorrow.
As for making a marg, it would make one to pour over ice, but it’s not going to make a frozen marg. It just doesn’t have enough torque for that. (And for a rocks marg, a shaker is faster anyway, so why bother?)
I bought these last time and they’re alright. The coffee is definitely mediocre. I’ve used it for tea, hot chocolate, and a few times for my protein shakes. Easier to clean than my shaker and I don’t have to worry about it exploding on me while I’m shaking one.

You just reminded me I should dig these out of the closet and toss them. I do k-cups now and need the space.
@sammydog01 I’ll take 'em if you’re not willing to donate.
@PooltoyWolf I guess I can put them in a bag for goodwill. No way is shipping worth it.

@Frcal Same here (even have one as a spare) and I use mine for cold-brew tea. Set it up, go for my walk and shower, and it’s decent cold tea.

@dvermilion I hadn’t considered that, but $10 for a couple magnetic stirrers is a pretty good deal. Probably could use these for making your own Coca Cola concentrate:
@1DisabledWarVet Tough but fair. (´ー`)
@ciabelle It’s really not a bad deal if you have a use case, but coffee probably shouldn’t be one of them.
@ciabelle @dvermilion I bought mine exactly because of lab nostalgia. Since then I bought a hot chocolate maker that’s a stirring hot plate and is even more fun.
@dvermilion You are right. A disappointing purchase.
@dvermilion TLDR goes up front!
This is the cheapest you’ll find it and maybe worth it for the carafes at this price?
I think it’ll make a nice enough brew in about 20 min but the cleanup is annoying. Similar to a French press. I actually prefer it for ice tea but always forget to use it.
@highonpez I legitimately think this thing shines in every area EXCEPT coffee. Extreme marketing failure.
@highonpez do you just put tea bags in and let it steep, or do you use the vortex?
@highonpez @user85442241 I use the vortex with tea bags; I just have to make sure the bags are anchored (either to the clip under the lid or pinned to the sides of the glass.
I think Ollie’s around here finally cleared through their stock of these at $5 each (last year’s black Friday price that stuck around).
And then last week the carafe to mine got broken.
I never did use it, but I do like the idea of it.
I’ll think about it, Meh.
@djslack Do the carafes break easily?
@djslack @Kyeh They’re not Pyrex, that’s for sure. It’s just normal glass, like any you’d drink from. Not especially fragile but not especially strong, either.
@djslack @dvermilion The handles look awfully thin.
@Kyeh not especially. This one took an honest hit.
@djslack @Kyeh you don’t actually need the glass carafes (a plastic takeout container holds the magnetic cup just as well) if you’re not dealing with anything hot.
(Heck, we probably don’t need the cups either, just a long metal rod.)
@djslack @pakopako A metal rod? What?
I think the film reference was a mistake. Wizard of Oz where EVERYONE is a cold brewer would have been better.
@cfg83 And here I was thinking they should have gone with Twister.
@altoidbox @cfg83

@jamorr03 Pretty much my experience, too. I gave it to my neighbor, a real coffee hound, and she put it out in the trash next day.
If anyone is still unsure about purchase, note that you need easily twice as much ground coffee as usual.
Originally $100 - now 2 for $10. So you know they’re awesome.
POKER! JOKER! NOT MEDIOCRE! AWESOME!
I can’t believe the site that sold pot smoking garden gnomes is going to devote this day to a piece of crap coffee brewer.
Seriously. Perfect opportunity for something pot related, or something crazy like 30 pounds of pasta or expired munchies.
I would wager good money there are more cannabis users than cold-brew brewers. Oh well.
Enjoy the holiday!
@KNmeh7
wonder if you can make cold brew cannabis ‘tea’ using this gizmo. And… most importantly, would it taste drinkable?
@chienfou @KNmeh7 you would need a lot of sugar and aromatic oils to get past the “dried bitter cabbage” aroma (e.g. chewing tobacco)
@KNmeh7 @pakopako
Sounds vaguely like the voice of experience

If there’s anything I wish I could improve is that they could be plugged into a USB outlet to be powered.
