Do you ever listen to Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me on NPR?
Tbh, I just turned it on at the end today, but Peter Sagal closed with the whole breakfast octopus Bezos quote. I’ll listen to all of it later on podcast.
@dave Thanks! Yes it takes you to the middle question which is the octopus one. In case someone wants to listen to all three questions at 27:03 they say the 3 questions are about Bezos. Then 27:40 they start asking them. At 28:44 is when they say the entire quote. Cool that the show picked what he said to @snapster as one of the three questions.
@dave - Thanks!
That quote was so familiar - it felt like hearing my own name in an incongruous setting. You know how that perks your attention? Too bad they didn’t name Matt.
@kdemo one was John Goodman, the other was James Patterson… both shows were amazing!!! It does travel outside of Chicago… we saw it in New Orleans on a whim, and then caught it in Hartford. Could not justify the expense to see it in NYC, though.
@kdemo it is truly hilarious… i wish they would just produce some of the outakes. I have never laughed so hard. We lucked into tickets in New Orleans. We have been there a few times and were done with the touristy things to do. While on a trolly ride, we saw that the show was going to be there the next night. I checked for tickets and splurged on front section tickets. Turned out we were in handicap seats that had been held but not sold. We ran into the manager of the local public radio and were invited to an after party at the Ritz-Carlton… we had so much fun. Got to meet Peter, Maeve and Hari upclose and personal. Bill was there but he was on the other side of the party. My husband, knowing how much I LOVE a deep voice, would not let me near him.
Gave up my first helicopter ride to do this…so glad I did!!
@mikibell They do sometimes have outtakes as special special episodes on their podcast feed or as part of clip shows/shows reairing certain clips on weeks when the show is on vacation. I think they also do some for NPR+ (or is it a patreon thing? I don’t remember) subscribers.
As for seeing the show live, I have plans to do a long weekend trip to Chicago specifically to see the show (and also go to the Museum of Science and Industry). I just haven’t figured out how to make that happen with my schedule and life and stuff.
@mikibell - Oh wow, how great! That sounds like one of those top few memorable lifetime experiences!
As @gt0163c said above, on the podcasts they promote a paid version where you can hear outtakes and participate in some news quizzes, etc.
Typically WWDTM is part of my weekend routine, but I’ve missed a few episodes lately and only caught up this weekend (always listen to the most recent first). To be honest, I was nervous no one would have mentioned it; that would make me sad. Thanks, @kdemo for maintaining/restoring my faith in this mediocre community.
@joelmw - Glad to see you’re still hanging in the periphery, same as me.
I always have NPR on in the kitchen - I almost always learn something when I walk in there, but I avoid WWDTM because I like to play it later on podcast. I listen the opposite way, though, oldest first. I think Karen Chee is the best Peter sub so far, at least the most clever. A couple of the others could get good with practice.
wow thanks for the heads up!
@snapster - Of course!
Looks like @Dave found the reference that Peter recalled at the end.
Ah fun. In case anyone else wants to hear, I think this should work to take you to the right part:

@dave @kdemo Um, they did name him, as far as I’m concerned.
@dave @joelmw - I see your point.
He is The Octopus, after all.
@dave @kdemo Exactly
Thank you so much for sharing that I do listen to the show here and there but hadn’t heard this one very cool
We talkin old school memories right there!
@readnj - Wha? You don’t have flashbacks?
Tbh, I just feel lucky to remember some old stuff.
Breakfast Octpus quote is a “Bond villain” level remark, as someone in the show says.
: )
I suppose that quality (Bond villain level ruthlessness) been pretty obvious in the character of most tech billionaires for quite a while now …
/giphy “Bond villain”
@f00l I loved that bit.
For those who don’t know what’s going on, this article from about a decade ago may shed some more light:

@narfcake Oh god have we been at this for almost a decade?
We have see wait wait don’t tell me, live recording, twice… it is awesome, even better than the final product.
LEGOS! EGGOS! STRATEGO! AWESOME!
@mikibell - Jealous!!

@kdemo
@mikibell - That looks Bill-icious!
My son saw it in San Francisco, I couldn’t make it when they were in Seattle.
Wish they would YouTube it.

@gt0163c, hope you make it, sounds SO worth it!
