@boredashell I used to regularly dangle 40 feet above solid concrete for a living and agree 100%. A healthy respect for danger is a virtue. Safety first.
I used to work at an amusement park. I one peed off the top of a roller coaster lift and hit an opossum from ~250 feet up. Little evil demon-cat deserved it.
Ok. In days of old, we had towers where forestry men would spend their days watching for fires. 5th grade field trip I discovered I had a fear of open height as I was carried down from the 3rd flight of stairs. Staring out of the window in thousands of miles of airplane flight gave no clue.
Imagine parents today giving permission to such an adventure.
I don’t think of myself as being afraid of heights but I was in Porto (Portugal) several years ago and decided to walk across this bridge that was pretty high up. It was totally my own idea and I thought it would be fun, but it was scary as fuck.
@shahnm That looks amazing! Just looking at it from the safety of home, I feel like it would be fun to walk across that bridge. But now I have this fear of being afraid. Because I didn’t expect to be afraid, I don’t know if it will happen again.
The Call of the Void scares me more than heights, usually.
I have had great anxiety being at the top of rickety ladders because I’ve slipped once. It’s the uncontrolled falling that scares me.
Rollercoasters are my jam.

It’s been 13 years since I’ve been on that one. The random time pause at the first drop gave me the most ridiculous boost of adrenaline. I still remember it like it was yesterday.
if i’m enclosed in something substantial (inside a building, an airplane, on a monorail, one of those clear elevators etc) i’m fine. but if there’s open air not so much. i could never do one of those bridges somebody up thread posted a picture of, i’d probably play it cool and then in the middle start crawling on my hands and knees until the rest of my body locked up with fear and i had a meltdown.
also? the stadium seating in imax theaters & some similar concert venues gives me terrible vertigo and anxiety. i’ve sort of just spazzed out and nearly fallen so many times standing still waiting to get to my seat because in my mind i’m somehow about to fall straight down to the bottom, which isn’t even possible.
Although crossing bridges in a car scares the crap out of me too. Just seeing a bridge in the distance makes me break out in a sweat.
Interestingly there’s a very high bridge that I have to drive across moderately frequently. The first many, many times it was hard. Now it’s not a problem. It’s like my brain decided that I made it safely so many times I wasn’t going to die.
@sammydog01 yes, same! we moved about 4-5yrs ago and a Scary Bridge became a necessity to go certain places. it’s not totally chill now and i still prefer to drive in the center lane if possible so i’m not on the edge but it’s infinitely better than the first few times. it’s the largest bridge in new england apparently and it’s a double decker. to add insult to injury they’ve been doing major construction on it for added scary vibes.
also our neighborhood is very hilly and there’s one i refuse to drive near. when we were still getting the lay of the land my partner and i ended up on it once (thankfully he was driving) and when you get to the top you can’t see the road beneath you because it’s so steep. i feel like car could go ass over elbows on the way down. i felt like i’d rather get out and scoot down on my butt the whole way
@jerk_nugget No, no, no. I do not like that bridge. It’s worse than my bridge, this one:
I did get stuck once at the top when traffic was one way because of construction. Didn’t like that. Not at all.
Here’s my local nightmare bridge:
A tornado crossed it once and flipped over a bunch of cars and two 18-wheelers and sent them into the guardrail. The thought gives me the heebie-jeebies.
@sammydog01 There’s a very similar cable stayed bridge in Delaware that I’ve crossed many times. Bridges don’t bother me in the least but I could see how it might be a bit imposing.
I don’t have fear of heights, but a fear of falling, and I do not mean that in a joking manner. I positively love walking bridges over gorges, things like the Chicago Skydeck (transparent observation floor atop the old Sears Tower building), and roller coasters, but I don’t like going up much more than 6 feet on a step ladder. Which is to say if there is no real threat of falling, I have no irrational fear of heights. But if falling is an actual possibility, I would prefer to avoid those situations.
I don’t know if I’m truly acrophobic, because I don’t mind having the window seat on a plane. On the other hand, it doesn’t seem normal that the only Disneyland ride I can’t handle is the California Adventure Ferris wheel. (and that was on the normal cars - those stupid sliding ones can go right to the Devil)
I’m a rock climber, climb in tall ship rigging while underway (so it sways with boat movement), etc. so not scared in the traditional sense, but I am scared to try sky diving. Well I’d try it if I could guarantee that I could land gently, but that doesn’t always happen.
It’s odd - I don’t particularly like heights but I’m good at overcoming my fears. Climbing up on the steeply angled roof where there’s a chance I could slip and fall off? No thanks. Strap me in to a roller coaster? Sure, it’s going to be fun. I’m fine with glass elevators and glass floors. I’m okay with going across any kind of bridge. I love Kingda Ka, a local coaster at Six Flags in NJ which happens to hold the world record for tallest coaster at 456’. But they went ahead and built a 400’ tall drop ride on it and I really have no desire to go on that. I’ve ridden the rides 1000’ up on top of the Stratosphere in Las Vegas numerous times. Sure, they’re scary but you still feel pretty safe on them.
CBD one day. Talking about a high the next.
Themes.
I don’t have many “fears”. This is one.
I’m a lineman and I can honestly say heights still scare the hell out of me
@boredashell Bore Da Shell. This is how I see your name. Every. Single. Time.
@boredashell I used to regularly dangle 40 feet above solid concrete for a living and agree 100%. A healthy respect for danger is a virtue. Safety first.
@capguncowboy i see Bored A Shell. But we all know it’s neither of those.
@ZeroCharisma and yes i will neve get complacent on a pole, from 15 to 45 feet it still scares me
I thought it was going to be a survey about how tall all of us are.
I used to work at an amusement park. I one peed off the top of a roller coaster lift and hit an opossum from ~250 feet up. Little evil demon-cat deserved it.
I’m not afraid of heights. Not afraid of falling. Its that sudden stop at the ends that… concerns me.
@someguynamedmat But not for very long.
I’m not afraid of heights. I’m afraid of widths.
As long as am not looking up …
I’m afraid of excessive non-Euclidean metrics.

@christinerenee
This one was fun. Would have been scarier, but it was pretty packed the day I was there, so the crowd actually made it much less daunting.

@RiotDemon THAT’S A GREAT ROLLER COASTER!!! I HAVE A BETTER ONE!!!
@AlexJones it wouldn’t be a bad way to go.

@jerk_nugget This.

I’d have to close my eyes to deal with stuff like that. Unfortunately not an option when you’re the driver.

I have no fear of falling. It’s the sudden stop at the end that worries me…
I’M NOT AFRAID OF HEIGHTS, BUT WIDTHS GIVE ME ANXIETY!!! IT’S OKAY THOUGH BECAUSE I’M PREPARED TO GO OFF-GRID SO I’M PREPARED FOR ANYTHING!!!
BUY CRAP FROM MY STORE!!! !!!
@AlexJones You’re getting lazy, Rachel. Where’s the rest?

@haikiba
Good enough to qualify — you’re one of us.
@TheFLP YES, I can finally buy that bumper sticker.

@Kidsandliz
Honestly, by the time I reached the ground I’d be too busy stuffing my eyeballs back into their sockets to care about landing gently.
